#150 - Unlocking the Meaning of Baptizing - The Great Commission? (pt. 4)

In the Greek language, the word "baptize" takes on a fascinating range of meanings, from a short-term "to dip" to a more extended "to dye" as in coloring clothing. But the truest sense of its meaning lies within the context. Within the New Testament, baptize or baptism can mean to dip (short-term) or to dye, as in clothing (long-term). Within the context of the long-term process of making a disciple, it appears that the 'baptizing' we find in Matthew 28:19 should be interpreted on the longer-term end of the scale. An example of this can be found within Greek literature and has to do with pickling a vegetable. Pickling involves the immersion – baptism- into an agent that permanently changes the vegetable. What was once a cucumber is not a pickle. This is the essence of Baptizing when it comes to making a disciple. The agent of change is the 'reality of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.' When we immerse an individual in the long-term process of becoming a disciple, the result is a permanent change that cannot be undone. Join us in this lesson as we explore the profound meaning of the word Baptizing in the context of making a disciple. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries www.figtreeteaching.com Class Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/the-great-commission.html Apple Podcasts: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7mh4v8e7FDwOoPhQd7bz7Y References: Greek Participle/Present/Active: https://equip.biblearc.com/course/greek/61248 Present Active Participle in English: https://tinyurl.com/3v8uvpvs Example of Pickling in Greek: https://bible.knowing-jesus.com/strongs/G907 Dallas Willard, The Great Omission: Reclaiming Jesus's Essential Teachings on Discipleship https://amzn.to/3QxEEJO David H. In the Great Commission, Jesus commands us to make disciples. But what exactly is a disciple? What was Jesus envisioning when He gave us this command? How did discipleship take shape within the unique context of the first-century world in which Jesus lived? In this lesson, we will delve into the essence of discipleship and uncover what it meant to be a disciple within the framework of the first-century Rabbi-disciple model. The answer will likely surprise you. During the first century, individuals typically embarked on their journey as disciples around the age of fifteen. By the age of thirty, they often ascended to the esteemed position of a Rabbi and began making their own disciples. It's worth noting that according to Luke, Jesus commenced His ministry at thirty. Consequently, this would mean that the disciples who walked alongside Him were, in essence, teenagers! This fact may challenge some preconceived notions. Two key factors contribute to the misconception surrounding the age of Jesus' disciples. Firstly, there's a gap in our understanding of the cultural context of the first-century Rabbi-disciple dynamic in Israel during Jesus's time. Secondly, historical art representations have often depicted Jesus and His disciples as aging, balding men in their sixties or seventies—a far cry from reality. Join us on this journey as we explore the significance of making disciples of Jesus and why the first-century Rabbi-disciple model holds the power to profoundly impact God's kingdom and the world. In this episode of the Wisdom Keeper podcast, I'm delighted to be joined by Dr. Robert Gilbert a leading scholar of Western esotericism and sacred geometry, particularly the Rosicrucian tradition of mystical Christianity. Using ancient cosmological maps Robert locates our human civilization entering a period of darkness and fragmentation co-emerging with a dramatic expansion of consciousness and global ascension. Robert and I converse about the hidden dimensions of unseen beings, angels, and deities, as well as the similarities between the Tibetan Buddhist tantras and the Rosicrucian path of bio-geometry each repatterning the energy flow in our subtle-body nervous system so we can fulfill our purpose as incarnate souls in the world. I know you'll enjoy Robert's wealth of knowledge and coherent synthesis as much as I do. In this episode Robert and I discuss: • The Vedic Yuga cosmology and where we find ourselves in the 25,000-year cosmic cycle. • Entering the Age of Archangel Michael represents the expansion of esoteric knowledge and consciousness. • The signature and call to action of our age: to be highly self-actualized and to forge unique integrations from the fragments of various ancient esoteric knowledge systems. • Origins and character of the Rosicrucian tradition of Christian mysticism. • The secret dimension of unseen angelic beings around us, and the spiritual battle between Luciferian and Satanic forces. • The middle way and middle pilar between spiritual transcendence and worldly attachment. • Similarities across esoteric wisdom traditions East and West including Egypt, Greece, India, and Tibet. • Energy or yogic practices from Buddhist tantra to Rosicrucianism designed to open our heart center, help us remember who we are, and fulfill our life's purpose. Robert J. Gilbert, Ph.D., has a multi-faceted scientific and spiritual studies background. He is a former U.S. Marine Corps Instructor in Nuclear-Biological-Chemical Warfare Defense and holds a Ph.D. in International Studies. Dr. Gilbert has since 1985 conducted independent research into spiritual science to understand the non-physical basis of consciousness and the material world, drawing on the hidden initiation teachings & practices of great traditions worldwide. He has also extensively researched vibrational sciences and new energetic healing technologies. Dr. Gilbert holds the distinction of being the first non-Egyptian authorized to teach the new science of BioGeometry, developed by Dr. Ibrahim Karim of Cairo, Egypt. BioGeometry offers practical applications of Shape, Sound, Color, Motion, Angle, Number, and Proportion to harmonize life energy and benefit all living beings, as demonstrated at the Egyptian National Research Centre in projects conducted in the early 1990s. Dr. Gilbert recently released a new series entitled Sacred Geometry & Spiritual Science on the Gaia channel, revealing many hidden patterns that guide and control our lives on Earth. #148 - Did Jesus Command us to Go? - Great Commission (pt. 2)

Fig Tree Ministries Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 21, 2023 39:09

In this lesson, we'll explore the debate surrounding whether or not Jesus gave us a command to 'Go!' in Matthew 28:19. The disagreement revolves around the translation of the Greek participle Πορευθέντες (poreuthentes), which is usually rendered into English as 'go.' The primary question is whether we should interpret 'go' as an imperative. If so, how much emphasis should we place on it, considering that "make disciples" serves as the main verb and imperative in the verse? Over the years, as missions have gained increasing importance in Western Christian practice, more and more emphasis has been placed on the 'Go' aspect. This has led to many sermon series preached each year, explaining that the Great Commission is to "Go!" To determine how we should interpret Matthew 28:19, we will examine the other six instances where this participle is used throughout the Gospel of Matthew. We'll discover that while the English word 'go' is a suitable translation, we generally don't emphasize the act of going. Instead, we read those verses with the appropriate emphasis on the imperative. A significant aspect of our Christian journey is based on how we conceptualize the Great Commandment. Is it a directive to 'go' and redirect our focus globally, or is it a command to 'make disciples'? Making disciples entails starting with ourselves and helping people from all nations progress along the lifelong path of becoming more like Jesus. By understanding the various uses of this participle within Matthew's Gospel, we will gain profound insights into how it shapes our understanding of the Great Commission. ------------------------------------------------------------- Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries www.figtreeteaching.com Class Handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/blog/did-jesus-command-us-to-go YouTube: https://youtu.be/C4m6gVcUV20 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7mh4v8e7FDwOoPhQd7bz7Y References: Dallas Willard, The Great Omission: Reclaiming Jesus's Essential Teachings on Discipleship https://amzn.to/3QxEEJO David H. Welcome to our series on the Great Commission – or should we say, "The Great Omission?" Join us as we explore a fresh perspective on Matthew 28:19-20, a passage that has shaped the mindset and mission of many Christians. Is it possible that we've been misreading this important scripture? Could scholars like Dallas Willard be onto something when they suggest calling it "The Great Omission" instead? In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus doesn't necessarily command us to go; He calls for making disciples. It's a subtle but significant difference, and it's where the challenge lies. In many churches, mission work often centers on the idea of going to various places to spread the Gospel. While this is undoubtedly important, sometimes the emphasis on "go" overshadows the vital aspect of "making disciples." We're here to explore this unintended omission in our approach to the Great Commission. We'll challenge traditional interpretations, reexamine the text, and consider the positive impact a renewed understanding could have on Christianity and the world. Join us as we uncover the heart of the Great Commission and discover how we can live it out in a way that aligns with both the spirit and the letter of Jesus' command. This will obviously give him a new set of values. Things which the world thought important, he will no longer worry about. Ambitions which dominated the world will be powerless to touch him. He will go on using the things of the world but he will use them in a new way. He will, for instance, set giving above getting, serving above ruling, forgiving above avenging. The Christian's standard of values will be God's not men's.” -William Barclay, "Commentary on Colossians" 11. “The first and most basic thing we can and must do is to keep God before our minds. This is the fundamental secret of caring for our souls. Our part in thus “practicing the presence of God” is to direct and redirect our minds constantly to Him. In the early time of our “practicing” we may well be challenged by our burdensome habits of dwelling on things less than God. But these are habits–not the law of gravity–and can be broken. A new, grace-filled habit will replace the former ones as we take intentional steps toward keeping God before us. Soon our minds will return to God as the needle of a compass constantly returns to the north. If God is the great longing of our souls, He will become the pole star of our inward beings.” -Dallas Willard, "The Great Omission: Reclaiming Jesus' Essential Teachings on Discipleship" 12. “The real problem of humanity is that we have stone-age emotions and brains, medieval institutions, and God-like technology.” -E.O. She soon fell in love with the exhilarating feeling that came with stepping on her yoga mat. The two very important lessons she learned while exploring yoga was how to use breathing techniques to find peace of mind and to have grace and love for her body. While deepening her practice, Queen began to use her time on her mat as a sacred space to meet with God through prayer and meditation. She soon realized that through the stillness she began to open her heart and ears to God’s Word which in turn helped her in her battle with depression. Queen completed both her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training and her 100hr Holy Yoga Teacher Training in 2019. Upon completing her Yoga Teacher Training’s, Queen is determined to create safe spaces where individuals can find serenity, gratitude, and self-love while challenging their bodies, hearts, and minds, and souls. Ajahn Dhammasiha points out that the Buddha did not teach Not-Self to establish a theory or philosophy. The Buddha is not concerned with theorizing or arguing about philosophical views. His one and only concern is to get us out of suffering (dukkha); to teach us to end ageing, sickness, death and new rebirth; how to end all disappointment, frustration and pain. Not-Self if a meditative tool to achieve that through letting go.The Buddha explains that we actively create the delusion of Self, we generate the attitude of possessiveness, we regard things as me, mine and Self. Ownership can not be determined 'objectively', but we subjectively project it into our experience. The Buddha shows, however, that any such projection and delusion of me, mine & Self will ultimately create disappointment and suffering for us. The point is not to argue whether there's a Self or there's no Self. The point is what is the result of regarding things as self and mine. And that result is always suffering in the end.Once the mind can clearly see and understand that regarding form, feeling, perception, intention and consciousness results in suffering, then the mind will let go as a direct consequence of that insight, and our suffering will end.www.dhammagiri.org.au www.castbox.fm/ch/2744970 www.tinyletter.com/chammagiri/archivewww.vimeo.com/dhammatalks

Richard Rohr talks with us in this episode about silence, spirituality, contemplation, action, and why discernment is essential for each of these areas of life. One of the most popular and beloved of living authors writing about contemplation , Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM is the founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque NM, and the dean of the online Living School. Through his popular books, audio recordings, conferences, and daily emails, this Franciscan priest has become a leading spokesperson for the recovery of contemplative spirituality in our time. Kevin, Cassidy, and Carl skyping with Fr. Richard Rohr. "I believe the primary orthopraxy — praxis — is silence. Primary: it precedes all other spiritual practices, all other spiritual disciplines. And of course we're first of all talking — and I know you know what I'm going to say — about  interior silence. And that takes a while to achieve, because most of us, our mind fills up as soon as we open our eyes in the morning, with ideas, projects, agendas, arguments... and they're all of a verbal character." — Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM Rohr spoke with the Encountering Silence team from his hermitage in New Mexico, where he offered insight not only into his work as a writer and speaker, but also into the challenges we all face as we seek to integrate contemplation (including silence) into the demands of contemporary life. Indeed, as our conversation progressed it became clear that, as much as he values silence, Rohr felt strongly that silence should never be used as an escape from the demands of relationships, communities, or the struggle for justice — the "action" that must be partnered with "contemplation." Rohr has a keen understanding that silence is not something that not all people have easy access to — so, therefore, silence is a justice issue. He also points out that silence is not the same thing as contemplation (neither, for that matter, is being an introvert!) and that perhaps the most valuable gift that silence can give us is an invitation to move beyond the dualistic nature of language into a space that is restful, open, and simple — a space where, in the title of one of his most popular books, "Everything Belongs." "Silence is a way of knowing." — Kevin Johnson Richard Rohr is a warm and generous person and our conversation was quite intimate. He told us a remarkable story about encountering two of the most renowned Catholics of the twentieth century shortly after graduating from high school (spoiler alert: one of them was Thomas Merton!), and reflects in a truly beautiful and vulnerable about how it feels to be a man at 75 (we recorded just a few days after his birthday) where he finds grace in "having no agenda." "If people do get into contemplation or silence in the first half of life, it's almost always by some encounter with limits. Let me call it that instead of suffering, because we're so afraid of the word suffering. But without limits entering your life, you tend to define your religion in terms of spiritual ascending, rather than descending." — Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM Among the topics we touch on in our wide-ranging conversation is the distinction between true and false silence — as well as true and false dimensions of activism — the importance of being in the "second half" of life for embracing the contemplative life, the recognition that contemplation can take different forms in different cultures, and the hope that Rohr finds working with younger adults in the context of his ministry. This week we have our first "return" guest, as Patrick Shen joins us again to discuss the new book he co-wrote and co-edited with Cassidy Hall, Notes on Silence. Describing the book as an "entry point" into silence, Patrick and Cassidy share with Kevin and Carl how the book functions as a companion to their documentary film In Pursuit of Silence — and how it is simply a work of art in its own right. Silence is always over-stated — and under-said. — Cassidy Hall     Notes on Silence features a selection of essays by both authors exploring silence, and their relationship to silence, from a variety of angles. The book also includes transcripts of interviews from a variety of persons who are featured in the film: theologians, psychologists, artists, educators, and others who have many interesting things to say about silence and the noise in our contemporary habitat. Since only a portion of each interview could be included in the film, these transcripts provide a wealth of information for anyone who wants to go deeper in his or her pursuit of silence. A monk from New Mellerey Abbey, Father Alberic, said to me, 'Silence is a place of infinite possibility.' Silence is also a place of infinite language, because there is no proper language — there is no official way to box it in." — Cassidy Hall Notes on Silence also contains a generous selection of beautiful (and deeply contemplative photos) taken by both Cassidy and Patrick. As each of them shares thoughts on one of their favorite photos in the book, they give insight into how image as well as words can testify to the beauty of silence, and of our capacity for wonder at, and in, silence. Alas, we cannot know for certain, the cosmos demands that we surrender to its majesty, and we must take our seat at the feet of doubt. — Patrick Shen Some of the resources and authors mentioned in this episode: Cassidy Hall and Patrick Shen, Notes on Silence Patrick Shen (director), In Pursuit of Silence Jonatha Brooks, 10¢ Wings (includes the song "Landmine," quoted in this episode) Richard Rohr, Essential Teachings on Love The Desert Fathers and Mothers, Early Christian Wisdom Sayings Laurie Anderson, Big Science (includes the song "From the Air," quoted in this episode) Absolute silence would be a state of lifelessness. Our relationship with silence is always filtered through sound in some way, shape or form. — Carl McColman Episode 17: Notes on Silence Hosted by: Kevin Johnson With: Cassidy Hall, Carl McColman Guest: Patrick Shen Date Recorded: March 29, 2018

Hi everyone, and welcome to Restore Podcast episode 15. I am your host, Javier Diaz, and I'm delighted that you've decided to listen as we endeavor to help restore the vision, restore the mission, restore the church. I'm amazed how this little podcast has been steadily growing and, of course, I thank you for that. Our sole purpose is to create a resource that can help in some way restore the mission and vision of the local church. I want to give a special shout out to all our listeners outside of the US. Specifically, I want to say hello to those listening in Japan. Yes Japan! So…Konnichiwa! Which, of course, is Hello in Japanese. And Arigatou gozaimashita! Which is Thank You! Hopefully soon we can perhaps interview someone from Japan on our podcast! For this episode, I believe you will be highly blessed with my conversation with Pastor Randy Roberts. He is the Senor Pastor of Loma Linda University Church in California. It is one of the largest Adventist churches in North America. We talk about how he came to Loma Linda, some of the joys and challenges, and perhaps most importantly the church's current transition and refocus on growing disciples.
