This week, we present a conversation with writer, rock & roller, and esoteric scholar Gary Lachman, author of a new memoir, Touched By the Presence: From Blondie's Bowery and Rock and Roll to Magic and the Occult. In it, Lachman charts his journey from a young New Jersey misfit immersed in comic books and paperback fiction to his days playing bass in Blondie as the band rose to stardom from the New York City punk underground. Blondie would go on to have a top-ten hit with his composition, “(I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear” penned about telepathic communication Lachman experienced with this then girlfriend, the film actress and rock writer Lisa Jane Persky. From there, the book details his days with Iggy Pop, fronting his own band, The Know, and eventually, his immersion in consciousness studies and the occult, which has informed the dozens of books he's written since, including The Return of Holy Russia, Maurice Nicoll: Forgotten Teacher of The Fourth Way, Dark Star Rising, and Beyond the Robot: The Life and Work of Colin Wilson, written about his mentor and primary esoteric inspiration. Touched by the Presence is available now from Inner Traditions, and it was a treat to join Lachman to talk about the consciousness altering power of comic books, his time with Blondie and Iggy, and glean a little of his humor-filled and lowkey wisdom. Podcast: This week on The Mystical Positivist, we feature a discussion from the Western Baul Podcast Series featuring Rob Schmidt and Stuart Goodnick. The theme is “The Crisis of Continuity of Wisdom” and the description is as follows: The Greek philosopher Heraclitus asserted that it's impossible to step twice into the same river. In other words, flux is all. In terms of religious and spiritual practice, we apply this principle to say that, to be effective, The Work must change with the times, the places, and the people. Yet we see enacted among religious and spiritual communities well-meaning attempts to rigidly codify formulations of wisdom offered by deceased teachers, as if words themselves, or practices based upon words, could embody timeless wisdom. It's understandable. The very human tendency is for our minds, our bodies and our hearts to seek the stability of something we believe we can hold onto, untempered by innocent, child-like inquiry. Such innocent inquiry is, arguably and somewhat paradoxically, the most direct and reliable path to re- infuse original creative energy from within a tradition. One consequence of this situation, exemplified in many of our recent conversations with senior Fourth Way practitioners, is despair regarding the future of their tradition. For those sensitive to the feelings associated with the living, vivified expression of their tradition, they report a diminution from Gurdjieff's time, through the long careers of G.'s many students who had worked directly with G., thus carrying on his Work, to what they mourn as the soup of the soup of Gurdjieff's Work. This talk will strive to evoke a lively conversation about the dialectic between commitment to the living truths that emerged to embody a tradition, and the nature of creative attempts to revivify that tradition in the wake of its original exponents. We suggest that there may be no one answer, but that conversation among people of good will is a feature of how life can find its way to refresh itself. Rob Schmidt and Stuart Goodnick are spiritual teachers with Tayu Meditation Center, co-hosts of The Mystical Positivist podcast, and co-founders of Many Rivers Books & Tea. Tayu Meditation Center, based in Sebastopol, CA, was founded in 1976 by Robert Daniel Ennis. Grounded in the Fourth Way tradition of G.I. Gurdjieff, Tayu practice emphasises conversation be it within ourselves, with others, and between spiritual traditions. The Western Baul Podcast Series features talks by practitioners of the Western Baul path. Topics are intended to offer something of educational, inspirational, and practical value to anyone drawn to the spiritual path. For Western Bauls, practice is not a matter of philosophy but is expressed in everyday affairs, service to others, and music and song. There is the recognition that all spiritual traditions have examples of those who have realized that there is no separate self to substantiate—though one will always exist in form—and that “There is only God” or oneness with creation. Western Bauls, as named by Lee Lozowick (1943-2010), an American spiritual Master who taught in the US, Europe, and India and who was known for his radical dharma, humor, and integrity, are kin to the Bauls of Bengal, India, with whom he shared an essential resonance and friendship. Lee's spiritual lineage includes Yogi Ramsuratkumar and Swami Papa Ramdas. Hi Friends!Today we explore what Gurdjieff's “The Fourth Way” is referring to, along with meaningful contributions by Ouspensky, Gurdjieff's famous student. This discussion dovetails with recent episodes in which we have addressed mind-heart-body coherence as it pertains to manifestation. We also explore William Holman Hunt's painting “The Awakening Conscience,” uniting today's themes into our deepening understanding of identity, vibration, and the body as portal to new timelines of experience. Podcast: This week on the show we feature a pre-recorded in-person conversation with OM C. Parkin at Gut Saunstorf near the Baltic in Germany. We discuss the intention behind Gut Saunstorf as a modern monastery, the impact that digitization in the external world has on our ability to do internal work, and more. OM C. Parkin is a renowned European wisdom teacher and the initiator of the OM Foundation Inner Science and the publishing house for wisdom literature advaitaMedia, the founder and director of the mystery school Enneallionce—School of the Fourth Way, and Gut Saunstorf Monastery—Place of Stillness. OM embodies in his work the link between Eastern non-duality and Christian mysticism, of depth psychology and philosophy, beyond the limits of religions and confessions. He often references the tradition of Advaita Vedanta, which has been revived in the 20th century by Shri Ramana Maharshi, Shri H.W.L. Poonja, the American Gangaji, and that of the Fourth Way of G. I. Gurdjieff. OM acts in the tradition of these teachers and by being rooted in early Christian teaching. His work in the tradition of silence can be described by three functions: teacher (of wisdom), healer (of the soul), seer (of the heart). He has been supporting people to find their true nature for more than 30 years and founded the modern Satsang movement in Europe. More information about OM C. Parkin's work can be found at: OM C. Podcast: This week on The Mystical Positivist, we feature a talk given by hosts Stuart Goodnick and Robert Schmidt at Many Rivers Books & Tea on July 10, 2025. The talk title is The Practice of Patriotism, and the description is as follows: The present moment is fraught with political tension and polarization. Many of us are left wondering what it means to be an American. Spiritual practitioners ask, "what am I called to do in this moment?" Some traditions assert that activism and protest are valid ways to be engaged practitioners. Yet such assertions put the focus on what to do rather than on how to do it. In this talk, Tayu Meditation teachers, Robert Schmidt and Stuart Goodnick, will explore the path to becoming a true American and how the practice of patriotism is less about what actions we take and more about the place within ourselves whence these actions arise. This talk was inspired by an article Stuart Goodnick wrote in 2001 after the Twin Towers fell in New York City. Before commencing with the talk itself, there is the reading of that original article. Tom Powers, Jr. grew up in the shadow of Bill Wilson but that didn't keep him from descending into the pit of his own alcoholism. To climb out of his illness he needed to find a ladder and climb it as if his life depended on it because it did. In this episode, we continue our deep dive into the question: How do we know God exists? Today we will wrap up our discussion of St. Thomas Aquinas's Five Ways by analysing the Fourth Way (the argument from gradation/degree) and the Fifth Way (the argument from order). Aquinas' Five Ways are among the most famous arguments for the existence of God, and they have been hugely influential in the history of the Philosophy of Religion. They have also been at times misunderstood and misrepresented, so in this series, we're taking the time to delve deep and understand what, exactly, Aquinas is arguing. Luke Bhencke -Gurdjieff´s Christianity - The Fourth Way's Prehistoric Teachings of Christ, avaliable NOW at Parallax Press:https://www.parallax-media.com/books/gurdjieffschristianityA deep and practical study of Gurdjieff's writings, understood on their own terms, reveals a profound vision. Gurdjieff indicates clearly, and at times staggeringly so, that his ""system"", commonly referred to as the Fourth Way or the Work, is the continuation of Christ's original doctrine that should not be confused with the teachings of modern Christianity that he claims have been irrevocably and inevitably distorted. He emphasizes that this system is part of a broader esoteric lineage that stretches far back into humanity's prehistory and coming together in the incarnation of Jesus Christ. In this context, Gurdjieff reclaims Christianity as a school of inner transformation aimed at awakening the full potential of the human being and restoring the human connection to the divine. The material provided in this book is but a glimpse into that extraordinary vision.Bio: Raised in rural and outback Australia, Luke's background in biomedical science and physical education, with diverse interests in philosophy, religion and art - ultimately drew him to Gurdjieff's system where he has been a practitioner working with groups and individuals from around the world since 2000. Explorations related to Gurdjieff's Fourth Way and Christianity can be found on his blogsite at 'Faith made Flesh'

Some would call that person normal, while others would perceive them as weird while a select few in the medical “health” community would label them mentally ill.Sarah Elkhaldy describes her journey from being declared mentally ill by “experts” to learning who she really is — a gifted mystic and spiritual teacher skilled in the esoteric arts — and shares why alchemy is synonymous to awakening this week on Spirit Gym.Learn more about Sarah and her work on her website (where you can find out more about her Spiritual Retreat in Sedona in January 2025). The Fourth Way of Prayer After this, Saint Dominic would remain before the altar or in the chapter room with his gaze fixed on the Crucified One, looking upon Him with perfect attention. He genuflected frequently, again and again. He would continue sometimes from after Compline until midnight, now rising, now kneeling again, like the apostle Saint James, or the leper of the gospel who said on bended knee: "Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean" [Matt. 8:2]. He was like Saint Stephen who knelt and called out with a loud cry: "Lord, do not lay this sin against them" [Acts 7:60]. Thus there was formed in our holy father, Saint Dominic, a great confidence in God's mercy towards himself, all sinners, and for the perseverance of the younger brethren whom he sent forth to preach to souls. Sometimes he could not even restrain his voice, and the friars would hear him murmuring: "Unto thee will I cry, O Lord: O my God, be not thou silent to me: lest if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit" [Ps. 27:1] and comparable phrases from the Sacred Scripture. At other times, however, he spoke within himself and his voice could not be heard. He would remain in genuflection for a long while, rapt in spirit; on occasion, while in this position, it appeared from his face that his mind had penetrated heaven and soon he reflected an intense joy as he wiped away the flowing tears. He was in a stage of longing and anticipation like a thirsty man who has reached a spring, and like a traveler who is at last approaching his homeland. Then he would become more absorbed and ardent as he moved in an agile manner but with great grace, now arising, now genuflecting. He was so accustomed to bend his knees to God in this way that when he traveled, in the inns after a weary journey, or along the wayside while his companions rested or slept, he would return to these genuflections, his own intimate and personal form of worship. This way of prayer he taught his brethren more by example than by words. The post The Fourth Way – The Nine Ways of Prayer of St. Dominic appeared first on Discerning Hearts Catholic Podcasts.
