Due to CP's summer break, we're not having any new episodes, so we hope you enjoy this blast from the past with one of our curated episodes! We are not our personalities. However, when we are unaware of our lower selves, it's easy to identify with our personalities. In this episode, Uranio Paes goes through each of the nine types to give examples of how to fool the personality so that we can be free from its hold on us. Each of the nine Enneagram types has an over-developed Center of Intelligence. Uranio talks about The Fourth Way, an approach to self-development created by George Gurdjieff. Gurdjieff was the pioneer who brought the Enneagram to the West. He taught that the first way is the way of the body, the second is the way of the heart, and the third is the way of the mind. The Fourth Way is mixing these three Centers of Intelligence so our personality doesn't control how we react and we can be a more complete human beyond the confines of our personality. Joe is a leading cult specialist with decades of experience. Today's discussion kicks off with a discussion of the origins of much of the 'New Age' in the Russian Empire - Blavatsky, Gurdjieff, Ouspensky, and Roerich were among the founders of our contemporary cultic groups. Throughout history, some of the most powerful and influential people have been believers in the occult. Abe Lincoln held a seance in an attempt to contact a deceased child. William James, the founder of modern psychology, also created both the British and the American Societies for Psychical Research (along with Mark Twain). The denial of death and the search for meaning are at the heart of the human inquiry. Joe and Jon make positive reflections on these topics.

Gary Lachman in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Touched-Presence-Blondies-Bowery-Occult/dp/B0DSV388DQ https://www.gary-lachman.com/ https://garylachman.co.uk/ In this memoir, Lachman recounts how he went from being a successful rock and roller to a writer on consciousness and the Western inner tradition. He shares encounters with rockers such as the Ramones, New York Dolls, Patti Smith, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and Iggy Pop and also his time with Timothy Leary, William Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg. Living with Blondie's Debbie Harry and Chris Stein on New York's Bowery, a block from CBGB, the birthplace of punk rock, Lachman discovered occultism via a follower of Aleister Crowley. Post rock and roll, Lachman's occult studies brought him to the Golden Dawn, Manly P. Hall, Gnosticism, and a stint in Crowley's O.T.O. He details his time in the Fourth Way, including a visit to the site of Gurdjieff 's Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man in France, and his years studying philosophy and literature and working as a science writer while managing a famous metaphysical bookshop at the height of the New Age movement. Excursions to Stonehenge, Avebury, and Glastonbury in search of ley lines and pilgrimages to Colin Wilson's home in Cornwall are a few of the highlights of this introspective, often humorous account of a nascent writer's struggle from rock and roll to individuation.

Podcast: This week on the show, we present a pre-recorded conversation with author, Peter Russell, about his latest book, How to Meditate Without Even Trying (An Eckhart Tolle Edition), just released from New World Library. The refreshingly simple approach that Peter unfolds in his book replaces effort with ease and reminds readers that true peace of mind is closer than they might imagine. His techniques include the practice of allowing – releasing effort, relaxing the mind, and gently returning to the present moment – to make meditation more enjoyable and effective. In this extended conversation we go deep with Peter to foundations of his approach and how the methods he describes can enrich a variety of spiritual practices. Peter Russell is the author of eleven other books including, Letting Go of Nothing and From Science to God. A teacher of meditation for more than fifty years, he believes the critical challenge today is freeing human thinking from the limited beliefs and attitudes that lie behind many of our problems – personal, social, and global. He has inspired thousands through his talks, teachings, retreats, and popular online courses. Episode Description In this episode, Austin Bridges (co-director of L/L Research) and Doug Scott present the first half of a structured introduction to the Ra Contact for process philosopher Matt Segall, whose work on Whitehead's process philosophy has been a central inspiration for Doug's book Raian Process Metaphysics. The conversation moves from the historical origins of the Ra Contact through Ra's cosmological framework—intelligent infinity, the primal distortions, and the nested hierarchy of Logoi—to Doug's concept of teleopotentiation: the creative principle by which genuine novelty enters existence through the interplay of Affirming, Denying, and Reconciling forces. Matt responds with immediate recognition of Neoplatonic resonances, and the group engages a candid discussion of Don Elkins's death and the psychic risks inherent in this kind of work. Part one of two. Opening Invocation — Doug Scott Topics Covered I. Who Is Austin Bridges? Co-director of L/L Research, steward of the Ra Contact material and its community for over thirteen years. Austin frames his relationship to the material through epistemic humility—holding it as the backbone of his spiritual seeking without claiming it as ultimate truth. His excitement about Doug's process-philosophical synthesis as a new avenue for the material to serve the world. II. The Three Principals: Don, Carla, and Jim The unique trio whose convergence made the Ra Contact possible. Don Elkins — UFO investigator, pilot, physics professor at the University of Louisville. His journey began with the death of Captain Thomas Mantell in pursuit of a UFO and moved through hypnotic regression, past-life regression, and eventually channeling experiments with his physics students. Designated by Ra as "the questioner." Carla Rueckert — Christian mystic, cradle Episcopalian, library scientist. A direct mystical experience of Jesus at age two shaped her lifelong devotion. Became Don's research partner in 1968 and began channeling in 1974, discovering an extraordinary aptitude. Designated by Ra as "the instrument." Jim McCarty — Wilderness school graduate turned off-grid educator in rural Kentucky. Heard Don and Carla on the radio, joined their work, and moved in with them in 1980. Two weeks later, the Ra Contact began. Designated by Ra as "the scribe," his deeper role was sustained energetic focus and protection during sessions. III. The Nature of the Ra Contact (1981–1984) 106 sessions of trance channeling—completely distinct from the conscious channeling that preceded it. Carla was fully unconscious during sessions, her spirit displaced while Ra directly used her vocal cords. Three microphones and three tape recorders were required because equipment consistently failed. The ritual setup included a virgin chalice, incense, a virgin candle, and a Bible opened to the Gospel of John, chapter one. The material's language, rigor, and depth were unlike anything channeled before or since. IV. Who Is Ra? A sixth-density social memory complex originally evolved on Venus. Member of the Confederation of Planets in Service to the One Infinite Creator. The same Ra known to the ancient Egyptians—though their intended teaching of spiritual philosophy was distorted into deity worship by Egyptian politics and power structures. Ra responds to a "calling" generated by Earth's suffering, offering guidance exclusively through Q&A format to protect free will. V. The Density Structure Seven densities as bandwidths of conscious awareness—not physical locations but vibrational spectra through which consciousness evolves. Humanity occupies third density (self-awareness and choice). Fourth density (love and understanding) is dawning, but the transition is chaotic because the incoming energy must manifest through beings still enmeshed in third-density separation. An eighth density serves as the first density of a new octave—the pattern is cyclical. VI. Social Memory Complex as Whiteheadian Society (Doug) Doug translates Ra's concept into process terms: a social memory complex is a singular plurality—"the many become one, and are increased by one." Its formation is a fourth-density achievement prefigured in third density through the ecclesia, the gathered community. The noosphere coming online. The collective unconscious becoming collective conscious. In Whiteheadian terms: a higher-grade society sheltered by the third-density framework until a metaphysical threshold of wholeheartedness is reached. VII. Intelligent Infinity and the Primal Distortions (Austin) The One Infinite Creator as undistorted unity—"the macrocosm of the mystery-clad being." Ra's two uses of "intelligent infinity": (1) absolute non-dual reality, and (2) the potential aspect of creation paired with intelligent energy as the kinetic aspect. The three primal distortions as the logical structure giving birth to creation: Free Will (awareness awakening within infinity), Love/Logos (focusing of intelligent energy into creative form), and Light (the first manifestation—all that exists, organized by love). VIII. Ra's Use of Logos (Austin) The Logos as a nested, fractal hierarchy: Primal Logos → Galactic Logoi → Solar Logoi → Planetary Logoi → individual mind/body/spirit complexes. Each level receives intelligent energy from its parent Logos and has the free will to further refine its own creation. The engagement is participatory—creation gives experience back to the Logos, and the Logos iterates. "Each Logos desires to create a more eloquent expression of experience of the Creator by the Creator." IX. Teleopotentiation: The Engine of Creative Advance (Doug) Doug's central contribution: teleopotentiation names the universal creative principle underlying both Ra's cosmology and Whitehead's process thought. Drawing from Gurdjieff's Law of Three (via Cynthia Bourgeault): Affirming Force meets Denying Force, and through a Reconciling Force, a New Higher Arising is generated—genuine novelty, not compromise or rearrangement. Doug defines intelligence as "awareness in motion towards more—awareness as desire for gnosis." The will's focusing act by which infinite possibility becomes potentiated probability, becomes manifested actuality. X. The Torus and the Ankh (Doug) Teleopotentiation has a geometry: the torus—the shape of continuous self-referential flow, the shape that self-knowing takes. The Ankh is the two-dimensional cross-section of this toric reality. The circle is the eternal; the cross is manifestation; the eternal experiences itself through extended embrace. The primal rhythm carries three affects: yearning (outward flow), longing (the turn toward return), and rejoicing (coalescence at the center). Rhythm itself necessitates three—and this triadic structure is "the rhythms clothed in mystery, for they are being itself." XI. Matt Segall Responds Matt identifies immediate Neoplatonic resonances—Plotinus's emanation from the One, the levels of density recalling the hypostases. He suggests this resonance may itself trace back to Ra's Egyptian teaching seeding Plato's philosophical understanding. His assessment: "None of this feels foreign to me. The concepts and the deep pattern of creation and manifestation feel intimately familiar." He affirms that Whiteheadian language could have helped Ra express what the noun-based structure of English made difficult. XII. The Death of Don Elkins Matt asks about Don's suicide and its relationship to the channeling project. Austin explains: the positive magical charge of the contact attracted a fifth-density service-to-self entity that could not create distortion but could energize distortions already present. Don's pre-existing mental health vulnerabilities became inroads for this influence. A diagnosis of depressive psychosis with schizophrenic tendencies. The mental health system's failure. A tragic standoff with police ending in Don's death by his own hand. The trio's unique synergy was irreplaceable; the Ra Contact ended permanently. Doug adds: fifth density is the ceiling for negative polarity—in sixth density, one can no longer ignore one's unity with the other, and the negative path collapses. But at fifth density, extraordinary black magic is possible, though negative beings cannot create—they can only amplify what is already there. In this episode of Beth of Fresh Air, I'm getting into one of the most powerful aspects of deprogramming:The pattern interrupt. If you've been following along, you know I've been spending time with the work of G. I. Gurdjieff—and for someone who rarely finds great resonance in other systems, I've found a surprising amount of common ground. One of his key insights:For anything to change…it needs an injection of energy.A shock.Without it, patterns continue.Mechanically. Predictably. Repeatedly. In my work as a deprogramming and archetype coach, I'm essentially a professional pattern interruptor. In this episode, I'll explore:What an interrupt actually is (and what it's not)Why patterns don't shift on their ownThe role of “shock” in transformationHow to catch patterns in real time, not just in hindsightThe nuance (and danger) of trying to interrupt other people's patterns

In this episode of Beth of Fresh Air, we're getting into one of the most useful skills you can develop if you want to move through life with any kind of clarity:Spot it.Life is not random. It's recursive.Themes repeat.Patterns cycle.Spirals move — not in circles, but in layers. If you've ever had the experience of thinking, “Didn't I already go through this?” — you did. Just not from the same vantage point.I've seen this very clearly in my own life, even in something as simple as repeat trips with my son — similar setups, familiar dynamics, but new layers revealed each time. The pattern doesn't disappear. It evolves. And that's the key. This isn't about breaking patterns. It's about seeing them clearly enough that they can evolve. In this episode, Micah Ellars -- filmmaker and adept in the work of G. Gurdjieff -- and I explore:The recursive nature of life and why themes repeatWhy spirals don't mean you're stuck — they mean you're seeing deeperHow patterns in others are are seen more easilyHow to use this spotting in your favour, it's not what you thinkWhy curiosity is not optional — it's a necessary skillHow what feels like chaos often has underlying structureAnd how becoming a pattern hunter can save you years of confusionWhen you start to see patterns, you stop taking everything at face value. You stop reacting to every moment as if it's brand new.You begin to recognize structure — in yourself, in others, in culture, in relationships. And from there, something shifts. Not because you forced change. But because you can finally see what's actually happening.Let's take a Beth of Fresh Air together.Discover deprogramming and archetype courses at www.bethmartens.comApply for a zero-cost, one-on-one chat about working together: https://www.bethmartens.com/awaken-your-journey-archetype-applicationFind out your King Hero Archetype in ten minutes: https://www.bethmartens.com/king-hero-archetype-quiz-sign-upApply to become a House of Free Will Member: https://www.bethmartens.com/house-of-free-will-applicationDo a starter online course: Deprogramming 101 or Find Your Sacred Purposehttps://www.bethmartens.com/deprogramming101https://www.bethmartens.com/find-your-sacred-purpose-online-course ***MORE FROM BETHSign up to take a 5-minute King Hero's Journey archetype quizApply to become a member of the House of Free WillRumbleKing Hero Telegram ChannelTwitter (X)InstagramSign up for a Hero's Journey Archetype ReadingOrder a copy of my book, ‘Journey: A Map of Archetypes to Find Lost Purpose in a Sea of Meaninglessness'Donate by PayPal if you're inspiredFollow the King Hero's Journey Podcast on... Apple Podcasts SpotifyIf we're just meeting...I'm Beth Martens—founder of the House of Free Will, pattern hunter, archetype reader, podcaster, author, coach trainer, and  business coach.  Lisa continues her conversation today with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and iconic drummer of The Doors, John Densmore. John reads poetry and explains about the thread which runs throughout each of our lives, if we just tune into it.  This is a way of never being lost. He talks about Ram Dass and how, in the silence, people can really contemplate his deeper words. He further discusses the importance of poetry, and specifically Jim Morrison's poetry, and then reads a special poem that he read to Ram Dass, written in the 1960s by renowned poet Etheridge Knight. He further describes the essence of creativity and the gifts that musicians and artists bring to us. In this uplifting interview, he talks about his latest book, "The Seekers – Meetings with Remarkable Musicians (and Other Artists)." Inspired by mystic G.I. Gurdjieff's classic work, "Meetings with Remarkable Men," Densmore's latest book is a collection of short vignettes of his encounters with musicians such as Patti Smith, Lou Reed, and Janice Joplin, as well as spiritual teachers like Ram Dass, the Dalai Lama, and Joseph Campbell.  What is the secret to artistic genius? How can some people perform moving pieces of music, or write a thrilling manuscript, or create a deeply emotional piece of art? Do they have unique gifts? In this uplifting interview, he talks about his latest book, "The Seekers – Meetings with Remarkable Musicians (and Other Artists)." Inspired by mystic G.I. Each a luminary in their own right, Densmore shares stories of the creative thread that runs through each mystic, musician, and teacher as he searched for the origin of creativity and artistry. He shares several experiences he's had with LA Philharmonic conductor Gustavo Dudamel and how so much can be learned in the moments of silence between notes. The universal language of music is always a direct connection to one another's heart. This is Part 1 of the interview. Info: JohnDensmore.com.

What's seen as inspiring in the world are ego's triumphs. But there's another kind of inspiration we can feel when we hear about people who give themselves for others. We can also be inspired by those who exhibit essential qualities on the spiritual path. We innately feel an urge to embody qualities that feed a higher purpose. We can work to develop a “Work I” by observing ourselves and not letting lower qualities rule. This part of ourselves can arise out of conscience and be strengthened by practice. Inspirational stories are impression food that can enliven essential qualities that are in all of us. Whether any story is factually true in all of its details isn't the point. Stories are told about forgiveness, generosity, service, and the importance of working with childish parts of ourselves. There is discussion of inspiring circumstances including the request the Dalai Lama made to never to speak badly about the Chinese after the brutal takeover of Tibet; Garchen Rinpoche's training to generate loving kindness in a way that seemed impossible when he was young; the Zen master Hakuin's lack of concern for reputation; Orage's response to strong criticism by the enigmatic mystic Gurdjieff; the need for the character Siddhartha in Hesse's book to experience ordinary life in order to spiritually develop; the courage of Meher Baba's disciples to leave their lives behind in deciding to follow their master on the New Life; the all-consuming love in the Sufi tale of Layla and Majnun; the commitment of Gandhi to Hindu-Moslem unity which he demonstrated by fasting; the wandering of Swami Ramdas who viewed everything as divine after his realization; and the magical events that occurred in the relationship of Yogi Ramsuratkumar and Lee Lozowick. In this episode of Beth of Fresh Air, Beth welcomes a modern Renaissance man — filmmaker, teacher, actor, health coach specializing in the Love Your Liver approach, truth lover, a devoted student of his own psyche, adept in the work of G. I. Gurdjieff and Carl Jung.In a culture that prizes specialization — where the right hand no longer knows what the left one does — this conversation explores the forgotten art of being whole. What does it mean to develop mastery across domains?Physical and nutritional intelligence.
Mental and logical rigor.
Creative expression.
Technical skill.
Emotional navigation.
Psychological self-awareness.Not as hobbies.
Not as surface sampling.
But as disciplined, embodied development. This episode examines the difference between being “well-rounded” and cultivating true range — the kind that requires continually entering arenas where you are not yet competent, breaking new ground, and resisting identity built on narrow expertise.
Together, we will explore:* Why specialization culture fragments the psyche* Mastery across physical, mental, creative, and technical realms* Gurdjieff's work on attention and mechanical living* Jung's individuation and the integration of opposites* The creative process as psychological revelation* Why staying in your strength is a subtle form of stagnation* The discipline required to expand range* Wholeness as lived practice, not theory
This is not a romantic conversation about talent.
It's a sober inquiry into integration. What would it mean to refuse fragmentation?
To build capacity across domains?
To become harder to categorize — and more fully human? A wide-ranging, grounded dialogue on mastery, psyche, embodiment, and the responsibility of conscious development.

Seven of the aphorisms of Gurdjieff are considered in this third talk on the subject. Teaching refers to the ideas we draw from, while the path is our individual road. No two paths are the same, even when they emanate from a common source. The Fourth Way, which the Gurdjieff Work has been called, refers to the premise that we are three-centered beings. The work of the fakir focuses on mastery of the body or moving center, the monk on mastery of the heart or emotional center, and the yogi on mastery of the mind or intellectual center. Each way only encompasses part of the process. The Fourth Way develops all three centers in tandem. We all need cosmology, which describes the structure of the universe. Most traditions are mixes, but we are wise to take care in mixing elements of various teachings before having stabilized on our path. Reasons for finding a path may be different for each of us. Conditions can be fostered for spiritual development, but actual help comes from God. Three practices are discussed: simplicity, super efforts, and working with impressions. We have enough energy to work on ourselves; we only need to save the greater part of what we have. Through experiences calling for extra effort, we open to new levels of being. Only super efforts count. We can hardly advance in our comfort zone. Taking in impressions means taking in the energy that comes with them. An overview of faith, hope, and love from Beelzebub's Tales is discussed. Self-healing is separate from teaching and yet is a necessary component of the path. Carl Grimsman was born into the Gurdjieff Work environment of the early years of the New York Foundation, attended the children's group there, and later worked with Mrs. March, a direct Gurdjieff student, at East Hill Farm. The first two books in his “The Soul's Traverse” series are Sun Bridge and The Kindling.

Most postures are mechanical and are unconsciously accompanied by a mood, which invokes attitude. The Divine feeds on a very fine vibratory energy or food. The Work teaches that there are three being-foods: physical food, air, and impressions. Everything in the world is an energetic configuration vibrating at a certain rate. The lower the vibration the more the appearance of solidity. It is possible to extract finer elements from air, a refined food called prana. Impressions are all energetic phenomena that the senses pick up. When taken in consciously, they serve a crucial function that allows the body to begin the work of creating a higher being-body. The Work teaches that Earth is a school for incomplete beings. We can verify that we are incomplete if we practice self-observation and see that we can't remember ourselves and drift in and out of consciousness constantly. Gurdjieff wrote about five being-obligations, such as the conscious striving to know more about the laws of creation and world maintenance. The law of reciprocal maintenance is that we are fed and we feed. We are fed by God, and we can feed the Divine with our work on ourselves. Another being-obligation is the striving to pay for our arising and individuality. We pay through intentional suffering. When we see that the ego structure resists manifesting love of God, we begin to consciously suffer and conscience begins to awaken. Change of heart is the only true change. The body is a transformational instrument and everything is food. If we know how to digest, we can find nourishment in everything. We can work up to and through the point of death. Real freedom is freedom from identification. In this episode, we explore McKenna's mythopoetic “stoned ape” theory, his radical take on shamanism, the ‘teacher' Mushroom that leads one to the ‘indwelling of the Goddess', the mysteries of DMT and the “machine elves,” and his controversial Timewave Zero vision of history and hyperspace that embraced the I Ching and the Mayan calendar ‘2012 phenomenon.'Beyond psychedelics, McKenna was also fascinated with alchemy and Gnosticism, and while figures like Crowley, John Dee, and Gurdjieff were not embraced by McKenna, Graham nevertheless calls him a “psychedelic occultist”—a thinker whose visions of transformation resonate with centuries of esoteric tradition, even if McKenna probably would have resisted the label. Along the way, we unpack the tension between his cult of personality and his desire for academic legitimacy, and consider the legacy he left for today's psychedelic and occult communities.Unfortunately, I experienced some technical difficulties with my podcasting equipment, and the sound quality is not up to the normal standard. Luckily, my brother Daniel, who does the editing for the podcasts, was able to work his engineering magic and was able to salvage the file and clean up the audio the best he could. Podcast: This week on The Mystical Positivist, we feature a pre-recorded conversation with Red Hawk, acclaimed poet and the author of 13 books, including Self Observation, Self Remembering, The Way of the Wise Woman, Return to the Mother, and Book of Lamentations. Of Self-Observation and Self-Remembering, he writes, “Every living thing is surrounded by a vibratory atmosphere, a vibratory energetic field which surrounds the body and in humans is the ground in which the second, or etheric, body is formed. But in order for that to happen, we must learn to "eat impressions," which are the food by which this second body is created.” In this conversation, we go deep on the process by which we can metabolize the false self and give birth to genuine Being. Red Hawk (aka Robert Moore) is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He is the author of 11 books of poetry and two books on spiritual practice. He is a student and devotee of the Spiritual Teacher Lee Lozowick and of Lozowick's Master, Yogi Ramsuratkumar, the Godchild of Tiruvanamali, India. Over the course of the episode, we discuss Cynthia's religious upbringing and early mystical awakening, her academic training in Medieval sacred drama, and how she came to the priesthood. Then we do a deep dive into Bourgeault's relationship to the practice and theory of The Work and how she came to integrate them with the Christian wisdom tradition. As the interview comes to a close, we discuss the benefits of life as a hermit, the impact of the Gospel of Thomas, and how contemplative Christianity speaks to the spiritual concerns of so many in the early 21st century. BIO Cynthia Bourgeault is a modern-day mystic, Episcopal priest, writer, and internationally known retreat leader. She divides her time between solitude and sailing the waters around her seaside hermitage in Maine and a demanding schedule traveling globally to teach and spread the recovery of the Christian contemplative and Wisdom paths.

This series of essays represents perspectives from Stephen's half-century in the study of psychotherapy and spiritual exploration. He suggests that the energy we call consciousness is an inherent aspect of the Universe, the instrument through which the deepest understandings can be experienced. Stephen Aronson is a psychotherapist with an eclectic training background ranging from cognitive behavioral therapy to the alchemical approach of Carl Jung. His spiritual life has been a search for verification of a deeper reality underlying the ordinary world of our senses. His personal aim has been to find a way to reconcile science and spirituality which would unite the concept of Universal Intelligence with rationality. After more than a decade in Jungian analysis and over four decades of study and practice in the system of transformational psychology introduced to the West by G. I. Gurdjieff, he has sought to find an approach to illustrate these deep and complex ideas and methods in common language and universally shared experiences. Steve lives in rural Maine where he retired in 2013 after forty-three years in the practice of psychotherapy, education and training. He is also the author of THE SEARCH FOR MEANING AND THE MYSTERY OF CONSCIOUSNESS: A Psychologist's Journey Through Gurdjieff And Jung, has published on the subject of Spiritual Psychology in the Proceedings of the annual All and Everything International Humanities Conference, and has written for Parabola, a magazine dedicated to myth, tradition and the search for meaning. Podcast: This week on the show we feature a pre-recorded conversation with Donna McLaughlin, Mahamudra teacher in the Karma Kagyu tradition. Donna was first introduced to the Dharma in her teenage years. In 1970, having finished college, she travelled overland to India. After attending retreats in Bodhgaya with S. N. Goenka, she stayed at a Buddhist mission outside Delhi. Several people had already mentioned the name of Kalu Rinpoche to her, but it wasn't until she met Ken McLeod at that mission that she learned how to negotiate the logistical difficulties in getting to Darjeeling. In 1971, she made the journey to Kalu Rinpoche's monastery in Sonada, near Darjeeling. Her meeting with him was a turning point, solidifying her commitment to this branch of Buddhist practice. Along with other practices, Kalu Rinpoche encouraged her to study Mahamudra. Instruction and guidance was difficult to come by in those days and it was only with the 1986 publication of Tashi Namgyal's Mahamudra: The Quintessence of Mind and Meditation, that she appreciated the full scope and range of Mahamudra teaching. In the 1980's, she attended two Mahamudra retreats with Ken McLeod. She then attended four more Mahamudra retreats with Thrangu Rinpoche, a senior scholar and meditation master in the Karma Kagyu tradition. In the course of these retreats, he became her principal teacher. Her transcriptions of the teachings he gave at those retreats were later published under the title Essentials of Mahamudra. In 1990, with Thrangu Rinpoche's blessing, she and Peter Barth, another student of Thrangu Rinpoche, co-taught a Mahamudra study group for four years in Sonoma County, California. In 1996 she joined with Lama Palden, a graduate of the three-year retreat, to establish the Sukhasiddhi Foundation in Marin County, California. There she continued to teach Mahamudra. In 2006, Thrangu Rinpoche suggested she teach under his auspices in Sonoma County as part of the Vajra Vidya or Indestructible Heart Wisdom network. To this day, she continues to teach and guide students in this practice. Divided into three parts, Part One looks at the evidence of Gurdjieff's presence in Tibet, Part Two researches the direct students of Gurdjieff who explored Tibetan or other Buddhist sects to one degree or another, and Part Three is a collection of comparative studies showing the influence of Tibetan Buddhism upon Gurdjieff's teaching. Interspersed with the author's writing on the individuals discussed in Parts One and Two are relevant texts by them, many of which were previously unavailable in English. Layne Negrin began his spiritual path in 1988, practicing the Gurdjieff tradition exclusively for 19 years, then Mahayana Buddhism (primarily the Soto Zen of Shunryu Suzuki but also the Shambhalian Buddhism of Trungpa Rinpoche) exclusively for the next 13 years, and since 2020, after having realized that the two ideologies are the same in essence, practices both. That encounter, and a fateful read of Colin Wilson's The Occult, set him on a lifelong path through the hidden corridors of consciousness, mysticism, and philosophy. We talk about precognitive dreams and telepathy, the strange electrical accident that may have opened psychic doors, and how a shared dream with his girlfriend became the Blondie song “Touched by Your Presence.” Gary reflects on his shift from rock and roll to writing, his time as a science journalist, and his enduring fascination with thinkers like Gurdjieff, Robert Anton Wilson, and Arthur Koestler. The conversation also explores Gary's “naturalist” approach to magic — a focus on direct experience rather than dogma — and his philosophy of daily writing as an esoteric practice in itself. "Don't Know, Go Straight" is a teaching that came from the Korean Zen master, Soen Sa Nim. We have two minds: thinking mind, and “before thinking” mind which is without thought (Don't Know Mind). This is the mind of the moment, our true nature. Thinking mind, from which problems arise, obscures Don't Know Mind. Yet, we need thinking mind to do all kinds of things. Our limitations are often mental constructs. Going straight refers to our need to act. When we come from Don't Know Mind, we are shown the next right action to be taken. So, we don't need to worry about what to do. Don't Know Mind actually knows. It is a full body awareness, not just mental. We develop clarity by practicing coming from emptiness, without preconception. From the perspective of self-observation as described in the Gurdjieff work, conscience grows and informs our actions. Across different spiritual paths, there is the necessity to know who we are. Emotions stir up confusion. Practice is not about repression but holding or being with them without attachment to them. True fear is useful, and we can discriminate about right action when facing it. Being scattered or expressing stream of consciousness is different than Don't Know Mind. Each moment can bring us back to this mind. Compassion isn't something we do—it's something that arises when we see clearly in a Don't Know moment. There are different kinds of thinking mind, such as analyzing or checking minds. We see Don't Know Mind in children. When we come from Don't Know Mind we are more responsible since we take the whole into account. Humor arises out of Don't Know Mind when we see the ridiculousness of our opinions. Ep. 201 (Part 2 of 2) | In the thirteenth dialogue of the A. H. Almaas Wisdom Series, Hameed Ali delves into the subject of knowing, or basic knowledge, at the deepest level of awareness. Different from ordinary knowledge, basic knowledge is inherent and immediate, an important feature of reality. You can know Being by being Being, he says; know consciousness by being consciousness, know peace by being peace. Being and knowing are the same thing, he explains, two sides of a coin. Some of what Hameed shares here is unique to his Diamond Approach teaching, and not found in other spiritual teachings, such as what he imparts about the origin of mind and the distinction he makes between pure being and pure awareness.Hameed explains that we need our conceptual mind (to do our taxes, he laughs), but that reification—treating concepts as if they were real things—creates obstacles and alienates us from our true nature. The aim of all spiritual practice is to go beyond reification to immediate experience, he says. When Hameed describes the difference between pure presence and pure awareness, John wonders, how does Hameed remember the state of pure awareness when there's no knowing in that state? And what does it feel like to experience no ground of being? Hameed answers in his usual enlightening, gently humorous way, leaving listeners in a state of open-minded wonder. Vastly illuminating, this conversation goes directly to the heart of being and the heart of knowing at the very foundation of true nature. Recorded July 17, 2025.“Mind is not an obstacle. Not an enemy. The obstacle is the reified representation of mind. If we take the knowledge of that mind to be reality, that is the obstacle.”Topics & Time Stamps – Part 2How does Hameed remember the state of pure awareness when there's no knowing in that state? Hall• Examines Elvis's efforts as a natural healer, the significance of his UFO encounters, and his telekinetic, psychic, and astral traveling abilitiesElvis Presley, the most successful solo artist in history and an emblematic cultural figure of the Western world, has been widely perceived as a conservative Southern Christian. However, the truth about the man has been missed.Writer and researcher Miguel Conner reveals how Elvis was a profound mystic, occultist, and shaman. Beginning with the unusual circumstances of his birth—and his stillborn twin brother—Conner traces the diverse thread of mysticism that runs through Elvis Presley's life, drawing on firsthand accounts from the people closest to him, including his wife, Priscilla, the Memphis Mafia, and his spiritual advisors. He shows how Elvis studied seminal 19th- and 20th-century occultists, including H. P. Blavatsky, Manly P. Hall, G. I. Gurdjieff, and P. D.
