Small Talk Podcast is a monthly entertainment/news podcast hosted by Marlene Sharp & Chris Pomay. Season #2, Episode #10 with special guests: Jason Weissbrod, Garth Herberg. Co-founder & Head of Film & Acting Programs: Jason has a Bachelor's degree in Directing and Acting for Film and Theatre and has directed, produced, written, edited and starred in many films, television shows, web series, commercials and theatre productions. Jason became involved with the neurodiverse and autism community over 15 years ago through his work with The Miracle Project as their theatre director and lead acting coach. He also worked with programs and organizations such as Tree Academy, The Help Group, Autism On The Seas, and CSUN's Teenage Drama Workshop. Over time many neurodivergent and autistic artists told Jason they wanted to make professional movies, record music and eventually work in the entertainment industry. This inspired Jason and his colleague, Garth Herberg, to create Spectrum Laboratory. Jason and Garth believe that teaming up neurodivergent artists along with entertainment professionals stimulates everyone's creativity and talent. Jason says, “Show people what they can do and magic will ensue!” And it has! Jason feels blessed to be able to do what he loves each day and thanks all who support Spec Labs! Garth Herberg Co-founder & Head of Music Programs: Garth has been active as both a musician and educator for over ten years. In 2006 he received his Bachelor's degree in Music Composition from Cal State University Northridge. From 2010 - 2012 he was signed as a recording artist with Frenchkiss Records, along with his bandmates (Races). His touring experience and recording credits as a musician, producer and composer/arranger have included work with many acts (The Janks, Races, The Shivers, Kaely Yuchno). He has also worked on several television and film projects as a composer (Ordained, Fallen Idols, Sesame Street, Special Olympics, Boys Don't Wear Dresses). He has served as a music instructor at Bridges Academy, a school for 2e students on the autism spectrum; The Miracle Project as music director and composer; and CSUN's Teenage Drama Workshop as composer and music director: The Lex Theatre Company as music director and composer. While working at Bridges Academy, CSUN and The Miracle Project, Garth encountered neurodiversity among many wonderful young artists. The laughter, creativity and growth he shared with them moved him towards the role of music mentor and producer. He started Spec Labs with Jason so these vital, unique and authentic voices can find a place in the entertainment industry and inspire the world! #smalltalkpodcast #marlenesharp #chrispomay #jasonweissbrod #garthherberg Want to create live streams like this? Twenty years ago, Syd Butler started Frenchkiss Records, after his band Les Savy Fav couldn't find a home at the prominent labels of the time. Fast forward up until today, Syd's now part of Seth Meyer's 8G Band, the label is still going strong, and Les Savy Fav is still playing shows. On this episode, Syd joins us to talk about the label's triumphs and tribulations over the course of the last two decades, as does Craig Finn, who's bands The Hold Steady and Lifter Puller have enjoyed success under the Frenchkiss umbrella.
This week UCB alum and Lady Dynamite herself, Erin Hughes (@GirlMxPx), stops by to visit with The Boys about loving narrow genres of music, mosh pits a ska shows in churches, and the kids' song "Sneaky Snake" that has Cade rightly confused. They also talk about a week filled with live music from Sheer Mag to Five Iron Frenzy, as well as reviewing the Frenchkiss Records 20th Anniversary Show. Warehouses, dive bars, boats... if there's a PA set up somewhere in New Zealand, there's a good chance Miss June have rocked it and then trashed the place. As one of the country's most sought-after live acts, the Auckland-based quartet have put in the hard yards on songs that are equal parts noisy, hooky and defiant - all before even so much as putting out their debut album. Today, that all changes - their debut album is finally here, and it's well worth the wait. Prior to all of that, however, lead vocalist Annabelle Lidell and guitarist Jun Park pulled up some stools prior to a gig in Canberra supporting Ruby Fields. Through fits of giggles and a half-dozen tangents, we spoke of the tight-knit NZ music community, the hotspots of the islands and how to handle a crowd that has no idea who you are. is out today via Frenchkiss Records.Bad Luck Party Catch Miss June live next week in Australia: September 11 - The Vanguard, Sydney w/ Georgia June and Good PashSeptember 12 - Croxton Bandroom, Melbourne w/ Dune Rats and West ThebartonSeptember 13 - Metro Theatre, Sydney w/ Dune Rats and West ThebartonSeptember 14 - The Triffid, Brisbane w/ Dune Rats and West Thebarton Special thanks to Rachel-Jones Williams, Sony Music Australia, Frenchkiss Records, the University of Canberra and Evan Birtwell. I had been thinking a lot about how sound - the score and incidental music - effect the mood and even the story in horror movies and looking for a way to discuss that on the podcast when I came across the book Blood On Black Wax: Horror Soundtracks On Vinyl, written by this week's guest conversationalists, Aaron Lupton and Jeff Szpirglas. It is, as the name would imply, a guide to horror movie soundtracks, including scores and compilations, that can be found on vinyl. But it's also a history of the changing styles of horror films, a peek into the minds of composers like Jerry Goldsmith, John Carpenter, and Goblin, and an art book with beautifully rendered reproductions of album art work. The book covers everything from The Shining to Street Trash, from the incidental sound collage of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre to symphonic scores like Goldsmith's brilliant work on Gremlins. Both Lupton and Szpirglas review soundtracks for Rue Morgue magazine, and they have an expansive knowledge of their subject, and somewhat different tastes. Their descriptions can be fairly granular, down to describing common horror soundtracks instruments like the waterphone, which we talk about here. I'll post a demonstration of that instrument on the blog so you can hear it for yourself. They also talk about details like how good George Romero was at finding the perfect library-sourced music on a budget, how many genres of music horror soundtracks cover, the resurgence of soundtracks on vinyl, and even the complexities of reproducing soundtracks live with the movie playing on a screen behind the musicians. And I also ruin Avengers: Endgame for Aaron. Sorry, Aaron.. You can find Blood On Black Wax at all the good bookstores, and some record stores, and online in all the usual places. And you can also find more of their ongoing work in Rue Morgue magazine. I discovered this week's featured track while I was getting ready to produce this episode. I'd had another song in mind, which you will hear in a future episode, but this one is perfect for this episode. With its chaotic guitar riffs and punk attitude, it could easily be the lead single from a horror movie soundtrack. And it is, in a way, because the video is a short horror movie itself, featuring a young couple looking for a place for an amorous tryst in what looks like a creepy concrete warehouse, as young couples often do. And, also as young couples often do, they find themselves menaced by ghoulish employees who just won't let them be. Miss June's debut LP, Bad Luck Party, will be out September 6 on Frenchkiss Records. I think you'll be hearing a lot more from them. Keep track of them on their website, and you have to love this, at www.ihatemissjune.com, on Instagram also under ihatemissjune, and on Facebook under missjunenz.
Level 31 of My Little Underground has double interview action from Twen and a conversation with Kristin Kontrol from 2015! I caught up with Twen after their set at Amityville Music Hall to talk up their upcoming album Awestruck out September 20th. They talked about their deal with Frenchkiss Records, not writing the same song twice, avoiding trends, the unique smell of Long Island, and more! Back in August 2015, Kristin Kontrol did an intimate set at a Moscot location in NYC. I had the pleasure of getting to chat with her briefly after her set. Matthew Hitt is a singer and songwriter from the Rhondda Valley in South Wales. He is the front man of Drowners, an American-Welsh indie rock band based out of New York. Formed in 2011, the band signed for Frenchkiss Records and released their self-titled studio album in May 2013. After seven years performing and touring the world and one more studio album, the band announced a hiatus last year, prompting Matt to produce his first solo record. On this episode, Richard and Gideon chat to Matt about life in New York, what it's like to stay in some of the best and worst hotels in America, and how a surprise scouting in Times Square launched a decade long side-career in modelling.
To celebrate Frenchkiss Records’ deluxe reissues of the first two Hold Steady LPs, Craig Finn (The Hold Steady) and Syd Butler (The 8G Band, Les Savy Fav, Frenchkiss Records) sat down backstage at Late Night with Seth Meyers to share funny and poignant stories about the band’s early years. Their talk also takes in Butler’s high school straight edge band, how Seth Meyers’ house band writes the show’s music, and the time Finn and Butler’s groups were playing together and the one and only Joe Strummer showed up.
