Bill from Chicago might've said it best: the Hoodrats kicked off an epic night at The Bowery Ballroom by squeezing into the tiniest bar in NYC—and things only got bigger from there. Vermont Cat and Gaspar join the recap to break down a Craig Finn show that featured up to eleven musicians on stage at once. Which songs soared? Which moments hit hardest? Then, Gaspar gives his take on Craig's Rough Trade set and dives deep into a startling reveal about the character “Nathen” that has his red yarn conspiracy board tangled in new directions. Finally, the Diamonds in the Drain game returns—but this time, it's the bonus tracks under the microscope. Can Kevin resist peer pressure, or will “Kevin is Whenever” go rogue and crown a different gold medal track than the rest of the gang? Tune in for music nerding, bold takes, and group text energy turned all the way up.Fill out our quick survey:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1MqdvDjV3PioUvMlYeJNFwnzpKJT8S9vU_NTXIsd5TLM/viewform?edit_requested=true&pli=1Leave us a voicemail:https://www.speakpipe.com/TheHoodratRecapPodcast
Send us a textPete stops by the show to discuss The Dandy Warhols, Studio vs performing, when he learned guitar, and more.****Following a triumphant 2024 with the release of their overwhelmingly critic-hailed twelfth studio album ROCKMAKER featuring Frank Black, Slash, and Debbie Harry, a packed-to-the-gills national tour, and a completely sold out West Coast 30th Anniversary-as-a-band string of dates, Portland's iconoclastic and always surprising alt-rock band THE DANDY WARHOLS are returning to the road for a handful of East Coast shows that kick off on May 9th at Asbury Park, NJ's Stone Pony and wrap with a handful of NYC dates at Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge. Included in the dates is an intimate, acoustic-ish late afternoon performance on Saturday, May 17th at the sexy Two Fifteen Lounge in NYC's Public Hotel, preceding their show the same evening at Bowery Ballroom. Loose and loungey, the cozy event will allow fans to sip signature cocktails and rub elbows with the band (and get autographs and pics too!) before and after a very special and rare stripped down performance.Following last fall's revved-up and greased banger, “The Summer of Hate'' which Q Magazine called “buzz-heavy, raw punk” and Post-Punk.com “a dark-rock manifesto, fueled by gritty guitars and fuzzed-out vocals with a supple, sexy rhythm,” the new single opens the gates for the release of their twelfth album ROCKMAKER. Always experimenting and pushing the boundaries of their own creativity (their previous album Tafelmuzik Means More When You're Alone was a three-and-a-half-hour exploration of what The AU Report characterized as a “soundtrack that would typically score a mid-16th century banquet”), this album delves deeper into minor guitar chords that often characterize post-punk, deep metal, or even goth.Sometimes we have a very focused idea of what we want,” Taylor-Taylor says. “It's generally what we want somebody else to make but since they never do, we have to. It has a very specific sound. There aren't a lot of heavy guitar records currently coming out that we like, so that was the impetus for ROCKMAKER.”******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. The podcast episode features Jesse Rifkin, the owner of Walk on the Wildside Tours NYC, a music history walking tour company in New York City, and the author of the book 'This Must Be the Place: Music, Community, and Vanishing Spaces in New York City.' Rifkin shares his background, including his consultancy roles as a pop music historian and his 12 years as a touring musician. They discuss his first concert experience, watching Bob Dylan with Ani DiFranco as the opening act at the Filene Center in Vienna, Virginia, and the interesting intersections his life has had with notable music historians like Alan Lomax.Rifkin recounts his experience attending a unique U2 concert at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, highlighting how seeing a globally famous band in an intimate venue was a surreal and memorable experience. He emphasizes the different dimensions of enjoying massive arena shows versus small, underground music scenes. He talks about his favorite bands, particularly Akron Family and other experimental groups, often performing at DIY venues like Silent Barn and emphasizing how these experiences felt more personal and impactful. The conversation shifts to Jesse's walking tours, which often focus on the punk and post-punk scenes in NYC, featuring iconic sites like CBGB. He discusses the importance of understanding the human and local context behind legendary music and bands, offering a more tangible and relatable connection to this history. His tours aim to demystify the grandiosity of famous musicians by highlighting their humble beginnings in intimate settings. Finally, Jesse talks about his book and its evolution from his extensive tours and Instagram presence, which caught the attention of his editor in 2019. He details the content of the book, which spans 60 years of music history, categorizing different NYC music scenes, and offers practical insights into creating community-driven music venues. Taking a big bite out of life, brother/co-host Brian has returned from a birthday celebration trip to New York City and he's back and telling us all about it. He shares about his accessible travel and airport experiences at Toronto Pierson, JFK, and LaGuardia, the music show “An Evening With Ida and Tsunami” at Bowery Ballroom he attended with friend/Outlook guest Nefertiti Matos Olivares on Birthday Eve, and another round (after his experience in London, England) and again he set up an exploration of a city with greeter organisation Big Apple Greeters to be shown around by a local along with meeting up with friends from around the state, including sushi with an upcoming Outlook guest. His snapshot of NYC and most of its boroughs includes a tour of NYC transport including a tactile map of the subway system and its history (one puzzle pieced put together at a time) found Brian checking out the tactile further with an exhibit of subway station turnstyles through the years and an accessible touch tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For us at Outlook though, it wouldn't be the same without audio to tell a fuller tale along with hearing about a few wild New York City encounters with security guards, allowing Brian to get a broader, more personalized feel of the place he's in. Check out audio from the live show he attended, his latest subway and other NYC transport and being live at Grand Central Terminal, and his special time spent on Roosevelt Island and The East River. And time in New York wouldn't be the same, especially a first visit, without stopping in Central Park to listen to some live saxophone music. Brian shares both audio and Be My AI image descriptions of some of the photos he took for sighted family and friends to see what he did, it's a full multi-sensory glimpse of the landmark New York City as we meet Brian beneath the big clock. At one point, he stands with his NYC local guide at FDR's statue there on Roosevelt Island, with The United Nations right there and the words of Roosevelt clearly underscoring some of the dangerous changes sweeping the States these days. Plus, also on The Island, they make a brief stop at the Accessibility Services booth to find out if they have any information for that spot available in braille. Stay tuned for the answer. Along with a sharing of some comforting cuisine prepared by a dear friend, plenty of King of the Hill watched, and a homestay at a Manhattan apartment, with the added benefit of getting to explore NYC with the blind leading the blind, he won't ever forget his first Big Apple experience shown to him by its locals. In this episode of Lipps Service — the second installment of our NYC music scene series — Scott sits down with four buzzing artists out of the East Coast — Des Rocs, Eamon Rush and Brian Duke of Pan Arcadia, and Connor Abeles of Cab Ellis. Starting off with the blistering rock ‘n' roller, Des Rocs discusses his upbringing and musical influences from Long Island, including odd jobs he's had to support his music career. Des also talks about his endorsement from UFC's Dana White, funny stories of his performances alongside The Cult and The Rolling Stones, and the influence ofIan Astbury and Queen's Live At Wembley album. Next up, Brooklyn-bred rock band Pan Arcadia's frontman Eamon Rush and drummer Brian Duke get into their local performances at different venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn, living together at “The Shack” and their home studio, and NYC influences like Lou Reed and The Strokes. Eamon and Brian also talk about their various charity benefit concerts like “Save The Scene” and “Rock The Pantry,” the camaraderie of the local current scene, and insight into the band's upcoming music releases. The two close the interview by listing their top 5 new bands and places to eat and drink in Brooklyn, and everyone in the studio takes a ginger shot, made and brought by the band. Last but not least, Scott talks with eclectic frontman Connor Abeles of Cab Ellis, who dives into his musical beginnings in LA and Boston, comparing LA vs. NYC music, and the band's experience working with experimental producer Gordon Raphael. Connor also talks about the band's name origin and developing his eccentric live performance style by running, dancing, and singing at Randall's Island Park. He gets into winning NPR's “Tiny Desk” contest, the band's forthcoming self-titled junior album, and their headlining gig in support of the release at Bowery Ballroom in January 2025. We had the pleasure of interviewing Amble over Zoom video!Rising Irish folk trio Amble unveil their major label debut EP, The Commons, via Warner Records. Listen to it HEREBeloved for their descriptive storytelling, lyrics and powerful live performances, the band just announced their biggest headline tour to date for 2025, including shows at Dublin's Trinity College and New York's Bowery Ballroom, which sold out within minutes. The 30+ date run follows the band's entirely sold-out 2024 headline tour across US, Canada, UK and Ireland, including their debut performances in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, and many more. The Commons includes previously released tracks, “Little White Chapel” and “The Commons,” plus three new tracks, including the standout ballad “Thoughts Flood Back To You,” “One Man's Love,” and“Luke The Navigator.” Throughout, the five-track EP explores themes of love, loss, and loneliness but always concludes with hope and wonder for the beautiful world around us.On writing the EP, the band explains, “Every one of our songs tells a story. We had no ambition to add bells or whistles or anything production-wise. We're putting a microphone in a room, recording the music, and that's it. All three members are songwriters, each contributing in their own unique way. Robbie's songs are based on personal experiences while Oisin – who also writes poetry and short stories– delivers somewhat more impressionistic work, and Ross admits he's more of a melody guy.”Stay tuned for much more from Amble in 2025.ABOUT AMBLEAmble are Robbie Cunningham, Oisin McCaffrey, and Ross Mc Nerney, a three-piece ensemble of songwriters hailing from the Midlands and West of Ireland. Amble's debut EP, 2023's Amble (Live), introduced a new, musing, trad-tinged trio of songwriters to the Irish music scene, followed by 2024'shighly distinctive Of Land and Sea, found the group expanding their sound to an ever-more global audience. Their songs present indelible marks of deft rural-related storytelling and musicality that is equally traditional and current. Unusually for a contemporary group, all three members are songwriters. Every song tells a story. Robbie, Ross, and Oisin write songs that provide a quick getaway: one minute you're at the center of life's relentless storms, the next you're sitting in the shelter and warmth of your local bar on a chilly winter‘s evening with friends, a drink, and the reliability of a great song. The unique perspective of three individual songwriters creates a peerless body of work - built on the now familiar, ruminative observations on the world and more fitting to the Amble journey - the stories unfolding each day within it.We want to hear from you! In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles and Doug welcome Stephen Pitalo, a music video historian and creator of the Music Video Time Machine. The discussion explores the golden age of music videos from the 80s and 90s, touching on Stephen's website, magazine, and blog that highlight iconic music videos and upcoming events. They reminisce about Stephen's first concert experience with Ratt and Bon Jovi in 1985, his fascinating encounters with musicians, and the influential music video directors he has interviewed for his upcoming book. Medium Build just released his acclaimed album, Country, and is currently in the midst of his North American headline tour. He joins us for a Listening Party ahead of his shows at Bowery Ballroom this weekend on Friday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22.
The Tuareg singer and guitarist Mdou Moctar is from Niger, and his music career began with his songs being shared across mobile phone trading networks in West Africa. Now, as an ambassador of the Agadez sound, he plays his songs on the world's biggest music stages, including Coachella, and, coming soon, Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. Moctar and his band combine rock and psychedelia, often in the "Desert Blues" style of loping and sometimes accelerating threes. Mdou Moctar's latest album is called Funeral for Justice, and features his most fiery guitar playing yet. He and his band are here, to stretch out and play this perhaps trancey music for staying lifted, in-studio. They play at Bowery Ballroom on June 25 and at Warsaw in Brooklyn on June 26. 1. Imouhar 2. What if I told you Hollywood isn't all it's cracked up to be? This week we read award-winning actress Constance Wu's memoir “Making a Scene” and it's, dare we say, pretty random. We discuss her time as a struggling actress, sex in Union Square, canceling a “Fresh Off the Boat” producer (and co-star backlash), owning a bunny, Mormon-owned coffee shops, not really talking about “Crazy Rich Asians,” theater kid drama, Michelle Yeoh dictating texts to her iPad, and Constance's many, many ex-boyfriends. We discuss the secret Motley Crue concert held at The Bowery Ballroo in New York on May 6, 2024. I was in attendence and give the listeners an idea of what it was like being at the show.
MOTHER ALERT ! It's Gypsy Rose Blanchard week, and we are unpacking her recently published eBook "Released: Conversations On The Eve of Freedom with Melissa Moore." With empathy and humor she discusses her Munchausen Mama, Wicca, bottoming for butches in prison, true crime adaptation ethics, why she loves her now ex-husband Ryan, and ultimately her hopes and dreams for the rest of her life. To quote Ms. Blanchard, “This is Gypsy's Version.” Buy tickets to our NYC live show at Bowery Ballroom on 6/5 HERE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Join us at the Red Table! This week we finally unpack actress, mother, and metalhead Jada Pinkett Smith's tome, "Worthy." We attempt to process everything from her formative years on the Baltimore streets with Tupac to her middle-aged Ayahuasca journey, and everything in between. We discuss Will Smith, open marriages, alopecia, Scientology, the slap, her film "Set It Off," racism at Ozzfest, and her close friendship with Cesar Millan. PLUS, we discuss the question on everyone's mind: is Jada gay? Buy tickets to our NYC live show at Bowery Ballroom on 6/5 HERESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
God Save the Queen! This week we DIVE into British Olympian Tom Daley's book, "Coming Up for Air: What I Learned from Sport, Fame and Fatherhood." We cover his path from casual curry Thursdays and the Olympics to marrying the screenwriter of the film "Milk." We go deep into our personal aquatic experiences, the dangers of flash photography, and why you need to get married in a castle. ALSO, gays who collect children's clothing: creepy or no? Send us a Text Message. As a live music enthusiast, I've had my fair share of concert escapades, but I pale in comparison to my latest podcast guest, Russell Kahn, the Chief Content Officer at News-O-Matic and a veteran of nearly a thousand shows. Imagine losing yourself in the throngs of a Phish concert or catching John Popper's harmonica mid-air; these are the moments we live for. In our conversation, Russ and I swap tales from our collective memories, recounting the rush of our first concerts and the bittersweet evolution of ticket prices that has since shaped the concert-going landscape.Transport yourself to the heart of iconic venues like Madison Square Garden and the more intimate havens like Bowery Ballroom as we traverse the sacred spaces that have hosted the soundtracks of our lives. From the electrifying comeback performance of Phil Lesh to the unexpected letdown of a RatDog show, we relive the highs and lows that have defined our musical journeys. The anecdotes shared span the gamut from backstage shenanigans to the cherished impact of classic concert recordings and films that have become as much a part of us as the live experiences themselves.Whether you're a seasoned ticket stub collector or new to the allure of live music, this episode is a heartfelt tribute to the power of performance and the eternal chase for the next unforgettable show.

Yes, it's the "S-word." Shoegaze...of all the media fabricated sub-genres that we talk about on O3L, this is one of the most polarizing. The term was coined with some derision about the crop of artists that came up in the late '80s/early '90s who spent much of their stage time looking down at their effects pedals. Even many of the bands who are most closely associated with the term rebuke the label. On the other hand, the word conjures up a glorious, beloved sound that continues to resonate with musicians and fans to this day: walls of woozy, beautifully sculpted guitar noise, drowned out but ethereal vocals, dreamy, insistent beats, all bathed in swathes of reverb and echo. The Extended Play (EP) was a format that was well suited for this music, so that's our focus on this episode. While we may associate the heyday of shoegaze with the amazing groups that burst onto the UK scene, its influence spread across the pond. Case in point is our Third Lad this week, guitarist Archie Moore, who spent the first part of the '90s simultaneously in THREE seminal Washington, D.C. area bands who took cues from fizzy UK indie - Black Tambourine, Lilys, and Velocity Girl. If that wasn't enough, Archie and his friends also co-founded one of the legendary American indie labels, Slumberland Records. Velocity Girl was the stuff that '90s indie pop dreams are made of: Named after one of the coolest songs, fronted by the impossibly cool Sarah Shannon, recording for one of the coolest labels (Sub Pop), staples of alternative radio and MTV's 120 Minutes with hits like "My Forgotten Favorite" (also prominently featured on the Clueless soundtrack), "Crazy Town," "Sorry Again," and "I Can't Stop Smiling." We caught up with Archie the day after Velocity Girl's first gig in 21 years at the anniversary bash for legendary D.C. club The Black Cat. They also will be playing the Bowery Ballroom in New York on September 30th before returning to The Black Cat on December 1st. Catch them if you can! It's not often a person gets to experience euphoria. For years I imagined alcohol could do the job if I could just find the right brand but eventually I gave up on that. Sometimes in church I've felt it. When I was 11 I got to go to the top of the Empire State Building. I sang the Dead's “Attics of My Life” once with two women and got a little high from it. And one night before the Philharmonic I experienced it at the Bowery Ballroom on Delancey Street listening to Aoife O'Donovan and Hawktail and the phenom fiddler Brittany Haas and it made the big crowd go wild to see artists overcome gravity and simply float.Aoife and Messiaen, two transcendent tours on successive nights: it makes living in Manhattan worth the trouble and expense. You can eat expensive mediocre food in loud restaurants, almost get run over by e-scooters, deal with surly salesclerks, cabs stuck in dense traffic, extortionate rents, impenetrable bureaucracy, but the museums and trains and tulips in spring and the occasional transcendental experiences make up for it. Two nights of mind-blown beauty make me want to start my career all over again.Garrison Keillor Jason Keillor, Engineer Jason Keillor, Original Music This is a public episode.
