On today's episode, I talk to musician Tina Halladay. Originally from Long Island, Tina met Matt Palmer, and Kyle and Hart Seely in college, and formed Sheer Mag in 2014 after they had all moved to Philly. From 2015 to 2016, the band released three EPs - titled I, II and III - and then performed at Coachella and on Seth Meyers, and since then, they've steadily built a following. Their next two albums were released on Wilsuns Recording Company, and their latest, Playing Favorites, just came out last year on Third Man, and it's incredible! We'll break down some of Vancouver's best recent shows including Sheer Mag and Amyl & The Sniffers blowing the roof off the decrepit PNE Forum last week, and even dig some classics from heavy metal legends like Running Wild, Warlock, Grim Reaper, and the almighty Judas Priest out of The Graveyard! Sheer Mag - "All Lined Up," a 2023 single on Third Man Records Philadelphia-based punks Sheer Mag have been signed to Third Man Records, who will not only be reissuing their older albums, but their forthcoming full-length as well (no hard details yet, but stay tuned for a release date). “Having been aware of Sheer Mag since their earliest 7-inch singles and keeping up with their self-released, independent, DIY take-no-prisoners ethos, I never envisioned a world where they would ever sign to a record label,” said Third Man's Ben Blackwell in a press statement. “So imagine how ecstatic we were at Third Man when the band reached out to us directly and asked if we'd be interested in partnering with them. Still doesn't seem real. We are beyond honored, humbled really, to receive their handshake and their trust. This is gonna be fun as shit.” Today's Song of the Day is a tease at what's to come. The band explain the track was inspired by "late nights at the bar playing pool. Last call has long come and gone, the gate is down, the ashtrays are out and your friend behind the bar is giving it all away. Despite the revelry, there's a looming sense of dread — a fear that no matter how far ahead you get, all it takes is one bad shot to lose the game.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Squarespace will honor existing customer pricing for at least 12 months following the completion of the purchase. It will also use Google's infrastructure to ensure a "seamless transfer of domains." For existing customers, Squarespace will provide billing and support for Google Workspace customers who've already purchased domains through Google Domains. However, as time goes on and as subscriptions start to renew, these customers will likely be forced to migrate to Squarespace's billing system. The acquisition is not surprising, as Squarespace is already a behemoth in the websites and domain space. However, it is a little more surprising that Google is selling, as the company is notorious for abandoning established products at any time.https://newsroom.squarespace.com/blog/googledomains ~Twitter - A group of music publishers is suing Twitter for $250 million, alleging that the company has done little to stop users from uploading and sharing copyrighted music on the platform. The lawsuit, filed by the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), claims that Twitter has "routinely ignored" requests for takedowns and that it is one of the only major social media platforms that does not have licensing agreements in place with music publishers. The NMPA also alleges that Twitter is less likely to take action against verified accounts that share copyrighted music, even though these accounts often have large follower bases. If the lawsuit is successful, it could force Twitter to pay out millions of dollars in damages and could also lead to changes in the way the company handles copyright infringement.https://www.engadget.com/music-publishers-are-suing-twitter-for-250-million-over-massive-copyright-infringement-082421118.html SuggestsResident Evil… ANY OF THEM!Comic Books/BooksTrailersX-Men Hellfire Club - https://youtu.be/9akSSU1_Ftg the book that will kick off the Fall of X arc hits shelves July 26th.Reg ‘ol NewsEnergon - Transformers and GI Joe shared universe. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! This week is our fourth in the series celebration of the gender with the most attitude and pure ferocity. Inspired by a show that Kevin played with his band The Swear a week ago, where he took a moment and paused onstage to witness 2 badass ladies commanding the stage like bosses! Per usual, we focus on women that truly rock! Ladies that play loud and heavy with attitude, grit, and that rasp. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. These ladies bring it, and you owe to yourself to check them out! We hope we turn you on to Lydia's Castle. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 2, 2022 is: grandiose gran-dee-OHSS adjective Grandiose is most often used disapprovingly to describe something that seems impressive or is intended to be impressive, but is either not possible or practical. // The committee eventually scaled back the most outlandish parts of its plans for the festival, including a grandiose scheme to bring in live peacocks for the event. See the entry > Examples: “Dave says their engineer had ‘grandiose ideas about wanting to make songs sound like Phil Spector,' but the group steered the sound in a more austere direction, inspired by the first two Strokes albums, along with grungier records by Sheer Mag and fellow Aussies Royal Headache.” — Evan Minsker, Pitchfork, 7 Apr. 2022 Did you know? When it comes to bigness, there's grand and then there's grandiose. Both words can be used to describe something impressive in size, scope, or effect, but while grand may lend its noun a bit of dignity (i.e., “we had a grand time”), grandiose often implies a whiff of pretension. The difference between a grand plan for the city park and a grandiose one, for example, might be the difference between a tasteful fountain and a garden full of topiaries cut in the shapes of 19th century literary figures. So if you're choosing between the two, a helpful mnemonic might be that the extra letters in grandiose suggest that one's ideas, claims, promises, schemes, dreams—you get the idea—are a bit extra.

Sept 5thWe start today's show with the rip-roaring title track off of Skeleton's self-titled debut record, out now on 20 Buck Spin. It's a raging blend of feral blackened thrash, riffy Conan-sludge, and classic lighter-raising bombast, sure to get the headbangers' attention. We follow that up with vicious and brutal new tracks from the likes of progressive tech-death units Pyrrhon and Odius Mortem, righteous jammers from local favourites Vth Circle and Temple Of Abandonment, and rampaging new music from Wake, Lares and Cirkeln. We'll satisfy your power metal itch with triumphant new tunes from Judicator and Unleash the Archers, and throw in a classic party anthem from the legendary Vancouver band 3 Inches Of Blood. The second half of the show will feature more flesh-ripping death metal with Bolt Thrower, Genocide Pact and Tomb Mold, and we'll throw in some hard-partying, hellbent for leather hard rock with Hitter, The Donnas and Sheer Mag! We'll also play killer new tracks from thrash legends Testament and Annihilator, and lots more! Of course, we'll also pay tribute to a fallen brother with an ode to the dearly departed Riley Gale of Power Trip, and play a track off that band's untouchable final album Nightmare Logic. Plus, we'll close out the show by digging a classic CELTIC FROST track out of The Graveyard! Time to crank it!

sent $$$ this week to The Pink Elephant Project building tiny homes at the 37th and MLK village in oakland.thepinkelephantprojects.com“The Pink Elephant Projects (T.P.E.P.) is an organization that offers unparalleled workmanship on every eco-friendly tiny home which we offer free of cost to our out-priced neighbors in the tent villages throughout Oakland, California. Our first project is at the 37th and MLK Village. Upon reading a quote from an Oakland City Council Member that read "We want to provide tents that last for 5 years…”, we were appalled at the thought that this was the long term plan. According to the, ‘EveryOne Counts! 2019 Homeless Count and Survey’, there are over 8000 people calling the streets of Oakland their home. This is unacceptable on any level considering that the fall and winter seasons can be brutal for tents. After reading the deluge of articles surrounding The Village, T.P.E.P. decided to take advantage of an outlet to help. T. P. E. P. approached The Village and its advocate, Stefanie, about building adequate shelters to replace the tents, and a mutual relationship was built.“DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)JODY "June” JuneSHEER MAG “Expect The Bayonet” Need to Feel Your LoveSurfer Rosie “Chugger” EP 186 GEMINI “PARADISE” S/T C/SCrystal Eyes “Already Gone” The Female ImaginationJoy Cleaner “Impossibility For Me” Total Hell4th Curtis “Nobody’s Listening” I Won The PageantMermaidens “Lizard” Perfect BodyBLU SHORTS “Cavity” Blu Wave Musicfirst pet “your house in the center of town” some people are just badShelf Life “Faith in the Weak” YARNCrumb “Recently Played” Locketsupermoon “Secrets in a Small Town” PlaylandMerce Lemon “Do You See This It Is Rough” Ideal for a Light Flow with Your Body100 Watt Horse “Mac 'N Cheese” Live at Heavy Meadowcrumbs “Trapped In A Haircut” Mind Yr MannersCult Fiction “Tired” PissedBless “Chameleon” 7"Pile “hissing for peace” A Hairshirt of PurposeMini Dresses “Center of a Room” Collected Singles and EPsSweet Lil “Smoked Out” Smoked Out

Tina Halladay looks like the modern-day rock star, which like so many other things in our society, destroys the stereotypes of old. She is the lead vocalist of Sheer Mag, which formed in Philadelphia right after all of the members left college in New York and decided to move here. The band is a hard rock time machine that updates the stadium rock of the 1970s and 1980s without sounding outdated or artificial. Tina invited me to the Sheer Mag practice space in Southwest Philadelphia, which is a rectangular-shaped storage room filled with musical instruments, merchandise, personal belongings and a can of Coors Light or two. We talked about what drew the band to Philadelphia, how people react to her appearance and how she deals with it, her musical tastes growing up and the realization that other girls in the audience sometimes look just like her. Recorded in Southwest Philadelphia on March 9, 2020. In this podcast: Excerpt of the Sheer Mag song "The Killer" (00:05), how I first heard about her band (3:50), being a throwback band with sincerity (4:55), if being a female lead singer is a big deal anymore (6:29), why employees at venues mistake her for a "merch" person (7:00), what it's like proving yourself over and over again (8:15), the stereotypes of the music industry (8:55), how a Long Island girl ended up in Philadelphia (9:53), why she's glad she ended up in Philadelphia (11:10), trying to categorize her band and "acid jazz" (11:55), what I hear when I listen to Sheer Mag (12:55), where Tina's musical tastes began (14:30), how she ended up becoming a vocalist (15:50), growing up hanging out with a "pack of weirdos" (16:30), her looks (17:10), the difficulty of finding clothes (17:45), seeing other girls dressed just like her (18:29), if she feels she is putting a dent in stereotypes (19:45), the band's connection to presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (20:25), the importance of "DIY" culture with the band (23:31), why they want to own their music (25:09), releasing their music on vinyl (25:45), her vocal style (27:17), singing about her turbulent history with her late father (29:17), why it was important to seek therapy (30:30), the art of coming up with stage banter (32:30), winning over the crowd (35:35), other Philadelphia bands she listens to (39:15), where she hangs out in the city (40:15), the track "Steel Sharpens Steel" from the latest Sheer Mag album "A Distant Call" (42:37).

Raise a goblet of goat’s blood and toast the solstice! Today is the darkest day of the year, and Ian’s got your soundtrack, featuring crushing tunes from some of our favourite releases of 2019!!!! Lurching doom metal from Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard and Dead Witches, ferocious thrash with West of Hell and Devil Master, putrid death metal including Tomb Mold and Vastum, and melodic Thin Lizzy-worshipping anthems with Gygax and Sheer Mag are just some of the highlights of today's show, plus we'll dig a track from Germany's legendary Warlock out of the Graveyard! Keep the fire burning!!!!
Baroness is one of the most critically-acclaimed and internationally successful bands that fall into the "extreme" metal category (even though they are much more complex than that) and yet few people seem to realize they are based in the Philadelphia area, not Georgia where the band started in 2002. John Baizley, the founder, lead singer, guitarist, composer and album cover artist for Baroness prefers that anonymity. John invited me to his home in Montgomery County where he lives with his wife and daughter, a few weeks after he returned from a European tour to promote Baroness' fifth studio album "Gold & Grey" - my personal favorite of 2019. John's home is the same place where he practices and records with his band, plus paints his many portraits for Baroness and other bands. We spent two hours (one hour of which was recorded for this podcast) talking about his continued love affair with the Philadelphia region, his obsession with colors, his desire to make his band different in every way and his steadfast resolve to live the "DIY" ethic. Recorded in Bala Cynwyd, PA on December 13, 2019. In this podcast: An excerpt of "Front Toward Enemy," the lead track from "Gold & Grey" (0:10); Matt reveals what album he played on Spotify more than any other in 2019 (2:10); why John chose to call the Philadelphia area as his home and a home base for Baroness several years ago (2:36); how Philadelphia was like a tractor beam as it was the birthplace of his parents and where John went to elementary school before his move to Virginia (5:20); Baroness' recent European tour and surviving on the road (7:20); how fantastic musicians sometimes have mediocre touring abilities (8:04); the ingredient that has been the constant to Baroness' success (8:58); how touring the world to play music is such an adventure (11:44); how the stress of touring has led to seven lineup changes with the band (14:00); the complexity and variance of writing a new record (15:02); their performance at The Fillmore Philadelphia and how confident they were onstage (16:06); the new album "Gold & Grey" and why recording it kept the band up at night (18:54); trying to evolve with Baroness' fifth studio album (22:10); shutting out the noise of critics, whether positive or negative feedback (22:50); making the traditional format of a regular band with vocals, guitars, bass and drums different (23:30); how he's endured 16 years in the same band (26:20); if John has a favorite color (28:40); why colors interest him so much (29:25); where the idea of naming each Baroness album after a color (or colors) came from (31:30); why the colors motif and the feminine-themed name and artwork for the band has always been a response to the outer music scene (33:30); why the explosion of Nirvana on the music scene meant so much to him (35:51); why "Nevermind" was "that" album for him (36:35); learning to always apply the "DIY" ethic (37:45); how the legendary band Fugazi taught everyone how to respect an audience (40:15); how Baroness acts "communally" on the road (43:10); living with ethics and a moral code (44:05); the tour bus crash in England in 2012 and how he's returned to the accident site (44:28); if he believes the crash was fate for him and his band and if it strengthened his resolve to live (48:30); the oddity of still being able to play guitar with his left hand (which was horribly injured in the crash) but not being able to open a jar with the same hand (50:30); where John likes to hang out in Philadelphia, with shout-outs to Union Transfer and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (53:05); why you can't "cruise" in Philadelphia as opposed to other big cities (55:10); his choice for the best band out there right now, plus the best bands from the Philadelphia scene (with shout-outs to Nothing, Sheer Mag and Woe) (58:00); how the goal of forming a band you cannot categorize can become complicated (1:00:26); excerpt of "Cold-Blooded Angels" from "Gold & Grey" (1:02:40).

This week UCB alum and Lady Dynamite herself, Erin Hughes (@GirlMxPx), stops by to visit with The Boys about loving narrow genres of music, mosh pits a ska shows in churches, and the kids' song "Sneaky Snake" that has Cade rightly confused. They also talk about a week filled with live music from Sheer Mag to Five Iron Frenzy, as well as reviewing the Frenchkiss Records 20th Anniversary Show. Adrianne Lenker feels things deeply. You hear it in every one of her songs; whether solo, or with her band Big Thief. Lucky for us, she shares it all. Over the past few years she's become one of the most promising and prolific songwriters around. Adrianne got her start early though, and it feels as though music has always helped her better understand the world. When she speaks about music everything slows down. She has a way of articulating what is often intangible, and she draws you into a beautiful meditative state with her voice and ideas. Whether you're a superfan, or if Adrianne Lenker is a new name, this is a conversation that will speak to you. It's about connection, about how melancholy can filter through joy, and how you can find space in the most intensely crowded sounds. It's five songs that get under her skin, from an artist that will get under yours. Sibylle Baier – 'Driving' Bill Callahan – 'What Comes After Certainty' Ithaca – 'Impulse Crush' Sheer Mag – 'Point Breeze' Life Without Buildings – 'Sorrow'

Chelsey Hahn is all about two things: all ages shows and making music with Perennial. PMS AND THE MOOD SWINGS "Only Friend In New York City" PMS and the Mood Swings Burger Records (2018) http://burgerrecords.11spot.com/and-the-moodswings-pms-and-the-moodswings.html Hold on to your rumps, chumps! Its time for PMS and the Moodswings! The new gang on the block serve up sticky pop candy with a classic Bowery punk beat, Coney Island surf guitars, and that uptown sax sound! And they lay their vocal Shangri La La La’s down thick, sweet, and bubbly as a Brooklyn egg cream… Habibi's Lenny Lynch's latest confection puts her in front of the microphone and reunites her with Habibi drum goddess of thunder Karen Isabel. They are joined by the nimble raw power fingers of Dansettes’ and Nouvellas’ Leah Beth, the handsome driving bass chutzpah of Stalkers’ Danny Goldshtein, and the wild gust that is single-handedly responsible for the recent spike in tri-state saxophone sales… Micah Saccomanno! In the months since their inception PMS/TMS have cut their teeth live on bills with the likes of Shannon and the Clams, Jonathan Toubin, Sheer Mag, Star Spangles, Mystery Lights, and more. They’ve already recorded their debut LP for Burger Records loaded with hits about boys, fist fights, bikinis, and bad friends.
New Fucked Up LP. Shaggy 2 Dope tries to dropkick Fred Durst. Diesel rips off Sheer Mag logo. Rock hall nominations. Gorillla Biscuits reissue.
Bridging the gaps between punk and indie rock, Grace Vonderkuhn is smart, sharp and deeply melodic. The frontwoman of a three piece outfit for the past two years, Vonderkuhn brings formidable vocals and guitar slayage to every song, with a magnetic energy that can’t be ignored. The band’s first EP was recorded on an 8-track cassette recorder and subsequently released on Instacrush Records. Since its release in 2015, they’ve tirelessly toured up and down the East Coast, joining the likes of Titus Andronicus, Lower Dens, Sheer Mag, Alice Bag, Ought and more on stage. “Reveries,” Vonderkuhn’s first full-length album, was released earlier this year to glowing praise. The album's lead single, "Worry" is a powerful pop tune drenched in messy garage tones. With a follow-up invitation to showcase at South By Southwest 2018, Vonderkuhn has drawn comparisons to music icons like Joan Jett and Liz Phair. Set list: Candy Buttons Bad Habits - interview - Cellophane Worry
