In this episode, I'm chatting with debut author Hannah Brohm about Love and Other Brain Experiments—a workplace romance inspired by the chaotic world of research labs, anonymous peer reviews, and the surprising ways love can show up when you least expect it.We talk about Hannah's journey from cognitive neuroscience to romance writing, how academia shaped the story, and why romance became a comforting escape during grad school and the pandemic. Plus, we dive into her reading life—from workplace romcoms to cozy mysteries—and she shares a few book recommendations that belong on your TBR.If you love smart romcoms, STEM heroines, and enemies-to-lovers tension, this conversation is for you.

FFRR (Full Frequency Range Recordings) sits right at the fault line where Chicago house crossed the Atlantic and rewired the UK. While the name itself comes from Decca's post-war high-fidelity recording tech, the label's real cultural impact landed decades later, when London Records relaunched FFRR in the mid-to-late '80s as a home for emerging club music. At that exact moment, Chicago house was exploding, raw, drum-machine-driven tracks from pioneers like Frankie Knuckles, Jamie Principle, Marshall Jefferson, and Lil' Louis were reshaping dance floors, and the UK was hungry for it. FFRR became one of the key conduits for that sound. By licensing, releasing, and heavily promoting Chicago house records in Britain, the label helped translate a gritty, underground Black American club culture into a mainstream UK rave and house movement. Tracks like Baby Wants To Ride, French Kiss, and Tears didn't just chart — they educated an entire generation of DJs and clubbers. In short: Chicago invented it, FFRR amplified it, and UK dance culture was never the same again. Tracklisting: 01. Club House - Deep in My Heart (Funky House Version) 02. “French Kiss” evokes a rare look into the most threatening years of the Cold War, a parallel to today's geopolitical climate. Hundreds of interviews with those whose livelihoods depended on work at the massive Dèols-Châteauroux U.S. Air Station provide intimate details on how the Kremlin had targeted France for Soviet domination. Communist provocateurs viciously condemned the American military buildup in France. French Communists spread the Kremlin's message over the radio, newspapers and magazines and on street corner. Every word of Lenin and Stalin was infallible. Fast forward to today's worldwide Islamic movement, girded by the Koran's infallibility and Allah's sacred words, has for decades used terrorism and war to conquer and convert. Contrast, “French Kiss” a tale of hope. Black airmen were readily accepted, initial suspicion, distrust and even hatred followed a path from forbearance to friendship and even to love and marriage.

This week, it's Bob Welch's first solo effort, "French Kiss." This Platinum Album was released in September, 1977 at the height of the Disco Era, and about the same time as the release of the mega-hit soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever." Bob Welch, the former member of Fleetwood Mac, enlisted the help of former bandmates Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood and Christine McVie. Enjoy!
Now, you'd think after so many episodes of this series, we'd be running low on accounts of people who embarrassingly removed themselves from the gene pool. And yet, unbelievably, here I am again with even more stories of idiots that ended themselves in the dumbest ways possible. From attempting to French Kiss a rattlesnake, to laughing in the face of gun safety, here's a new episode of our never-ending Darwin Awards! Winter and spring have given way to summer, and where better to head than the south of France for a romantic interlude, no? This week, Chris and Kevin crack into French Kiss, the 1995 romantic comedy starring Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan against the backdrop of Paris and the southern vineyards. Is this a downturn in Meg's romcom trajectory? Or is it, secretly, one of her best?

With these two transatlantic amigos and like-minded souls having been (ahem) brothers in rhythm for nigh on three decades now, it was only right & proper that some of JC's studio excursions would find their way to Selador. And so it was. The achingly beautiful ‘Alden's Groove' was first, debuting on our Sweet Sixteenth Showcase in 2022, and then followed by ‘Swaddles' which graced our Seventeenth Instalment in 2023. At the time we described it as “tip top electronic headfuckery”, and some two years on, we ain't changed our minds. So naturally we're pleased as proverbial punch to now unveil a brand-new double-header from JC. ‘Slater' is first up, as clever as it is insanely catchy. It wears several 90s influences proudly on its sleeve (think ‘French Kiss' meets Desert's seminal ‘Moods' and you're part way there), while wrapping everything up in a warm 2025 blanket of sound. Listen now, thank us slater ;) On the flipside, ‘Sawyer' kicks off with a pure 80s Chicago bassline riding that Windy City wave, before Moroder-esque wonktastic riffage joins the fray and takes hold of the dance floor. So high indeed. Tried and tested by both Messrs Seaman & Parry, these two meticulously crafted gems have been staples of their sets for the past few months but don't just take our word for it, judge for yourselves. On this week's episode, Lauren welcomes actor and musician Tim Minchin on a first date. Tim is a tortured poet who values quality over quantity when it comes to partners, an admirable quality that Lauren is pleasantly surprised to hear. The two bond over The Beatles, stingray sports cars, and the rom-com French Kiss. Tim composes darkly comedic love songs and he wears the guyliner to prove it, plus has some interesting thoughts on karaoke. Tim gets the full course date plus a tasting menu and dessert to close off things. I don't know about you, but I think Lauren really digs this dudes accent!
