Small Talk Podcast is a monthly entertainment/news podcast hosted by Marlene Sharp & Chris Pomay. Season #2, Episode #10 with special guests: Jason Weissbrod, Garth Herberg. Co-founder & Head of Film & Acting Programs: Jason has a Bachelor's degree in Directing and Acting for Film and Theatre and has directed, produced, written, edited and starred in many films, television shows, web series, commercials and theatre productions. Jason became involved with the neurodiverse and autism community over 15 years ago through his work with The Miracle Project as their theatre director and lead acting coach. He also worked with programs and organizations such as Tree Academy, The Help Group, Autism On The Seas, and CSUN's Teenage Drama Workshop. Over time many neurodivergent and autistic artists told Jason they wanted to make professional movies, record music and eventually work in the entertainment industry. This inspired Jason and his colleague, Garth Herberg, to create Spectrum Laboratory. Jason and Garth believe that teaming up neurodivergent artists along with entertainment professionals stimulates everyone's creativity and talent. Jason says, “Show people what they can do and magic will ensue!” And it has! Jason feels blessed to be able to do what he loves each day and thanks all who support Spec Labs! Garth Herberg Co-founder & Head of Music Programs: Garth has been active as both a musician and educator for over ten years. In 2006 he received his Bachelor's degree in Music Composition from Cal State University Northridge. From 2010 - 2012 he was signed as a recording artist with Frenchkiss Records, along with his bandmates (Races). His touring experience and recording credits as a musician, producer and composer/arranger have included work with many acts (The Janks, Races, The Shivers, Kaely Yuchno). He has also worked on several television and film projects as a composer (Ordained, Fallen Idols, Sesame Street, Special Olympics, Boys Don't Wear Dresses). He has served as a music instructor at Bridges Academy, a school for 2e students on the autism spectrum; The Miracle Project as music director and composer; and CSUN's Teenage Drama Workshop as composer and music director: The Lex Theatre Company as music director and composer. While working at Bridges Academy, CSUN and The Miracle Project, Garth encountered neurodiversity among many wonderful young artists. The laughter, creativity and growth he shared with them moved him towards the role of music mentor and producer. He started Spec Labs with Jason so these vital, unique and authentic voices can find a place in the entertainment industry and inspire the world! #smalltalkpodcast #marlenesharp #chrispomay #jasonweissbrod #garthherberg Want to create live streams like this? TWO INTERVIEWS!!! First, Howie and Scully discuss their field trip to a City Planning Commission meeting on Blue Oak — What fun!!! Then back to the Lounge they interview Jane about how it feels to be the reigning BJ's Bye Week Cook off Champion for two out of the last three years and how we'll need an extradition treaty to get that trophy back. We also discuss the role community food plays in a neighborhood bar. In our second interview we take a deep dive into the immediate neighborhood by calling on Jennifer Callan to provide a tutorial on the "Barmuda triangle" explaining the characteristics of BJ's, Vaughan's, and J&J's. They come to the conclusion that each bar is unique, but when one is hit with trouble, the others are there to help.We dedicate this episode to the memory of Jim Nevius — The Jim in J&J's — You were always the "Catalyst for a fun."
Ho Ho Ho.

Deputy District Attorneys Teresa Pham and Jorge Del Portillo talk about their trial strategies in prosecuting People v. Jade Janks. On December 21, 2022, Jade Janks was found guilty of first degree murder. Janks murdered her former stepfather, Tom Merriman, after discovering nude photographs of herself on Tom's computer. Tom was the founder of the Butterfly Farms in Encinitas, CA and the murder took place in Solana Beach, CA.This case received lots of publicity and was featured on CourtTV. FACTS:On December 23, 2020, Tom was transferred from Scripps Hospital to an aftercare facility and Jade Janks decided to clean Tom's apartment for him before he was discharged. While she was cleaning Tom's apartment, she discovered nude photos of herself on his computer. She was so disturbed by the discovery that she couldn't shower alone and feared Tom would be discharged early and come home. She began plotting the murder and sought help from a “fixer”, Alan Roach, who was a friend of a friend. The plan was to dose Tom with sleeping pills, get him to his bed, suffocate him, and stage it to look like an overdose. On December 31, 2020, Janks dosed Tom after picking him up from Aviara Healthcare, but the fixer never showed up. The fixer sent his buddy Brian Salomon to help out, but when she asked Brian to strangle Tom, Brian immediately left. Janks called her friend Adam for help. When Adam showed up, she confessed to dosing , suffocating and strangling Tom to death. She asked Adam to move Tom's body into a wheelbarrow and into Tom's bed to make it look like an overdose. Adam didn't want any part of it and left.Adam reported to the police that his friend confessed to murdering Tom. When authorities were looking for Tom, they couldn't find him. When they brought Janks in for questioning, she claimed not to know where he was. After hours of searching inside the property, in the early morning hours of Jan 2, 2021, detectives found Tom's body buried under a pile of trash. After arresting Janks and searching her cell phone, detectives found very suspicious text messages including:I just dosed the hell out of him.I really didn't want to involve that many people. It's going to be Weekend at Bernie's.I can't keep a kicking body in my truck. (*says truck but likely meant trunk)An autopsy found no signs of strangulation but did find toxic levels of zolpidem, otherwise known as Ambien.Crime or Fiction: Each episode we look at the laws on the books and quiz the panelists to see if they can guess which law is fake. 2 are real, 1 is fake--can you guess which one is the fake? The theme of this episode are laws from the Solana Beach Municipal Code.A. It's illegal to have an apiary in a residential zone.B. It's illegal to tattoo a person's skin if it has a rash or pimples.C. It's illegal to have bamboo over 15 feet tall. Jade had always been a good stepdaughter. Ever since she was 12, she had respected, loved, and admired her stepfather. Even now, at 37 years old, she was his primary caretaker. Her stepdad struggled with his health and every time he was hospitalized, Jade wanted to do something nice for him. She would clean his entire house so that he wouldn't have to come home to a messy place. She didn't have to, but she wanted to. One fateful day in December 2020, she was cleaning his office when his computer screen came alive. She looked up to see the desktop photo was a picture of a woman's nude breasts. She stumbled backward. She was shocked. Not because it was a nude photo - but because it was her nude photo. She searched his computer and found hundreds and hundreds of meticulously organized nude photos of herself. Some dating as far back as when she was 16 years old. This discovery would lead her down a path of destruction that would end in murder. We've all heard about the transformative power of meditation, but how can we access it when uncertainty, stress and living through a pandemic make it difficult to simply sit still and breathe? In today's episode Brooke is joined by friend of the show and founder of Centred Meditation, Kevin Janks, to talk through the power of meditation in challenging times. Meditation allows us to decompress from 'fight or flight' mode and as Kevin explains, the time investment doesn’t need to be excessive. (Research has found that meditating for as little as 12 minutes a day can have a substantial impact over the course of three weeks). It can also be used to shift our perception of control, which is often the overriding emotion during times of crisis, and by doing so, release us from the stress of trying to control and uncontrollable situation. Kevin also shares how meditation allows us to accept the current circumstances we find ourselves in (not in order to accept and give up, but in order to simply accept the way things are at the moment) and use that freedom to look at how we will move forward when we're able. There's so much to be taken from meditation, particularly during such stressful times, and this conversation with Kevin is full of tools and takeaways that will hopefully help you. Enjoy! Rest? I never did it. In fact, I prided myself on being able to juggle four or five things at a time. As a busy homeschool mom, I thought I was doing great. But I started getting sick. I had a hard time sleeping at night because my mind wouldn't stop running even when I went to bed. I began to wonder what it meant to rest. How did you do it? Ha! Rest means doing nothing. My guest this week was. Brenda Janks. She has a ministry helping overworked moms slow down and rest. Listen to her tips on what healthy rhythms look like.

A few weeks ago Brooke sat down to chat all things meditation with Kevin Janks - founder of Centred Meditation in Sydney. It was a fascinating look into Kevin’s journey from skeptic to practitioner and the benefits of meditation he’s experienced personally, as well as those he sees daily in his clients and students at the studio. What Brooke failed to do though, was ask him how to actually meditate. (Quite the oversight, really!) When she started getting lots of questions wanting to know more about meditation, she knew she needed to sit down with Kevin again, but this time go back to basics. In today’s poggie Brooke and Kevin talk about his definition of meditation and why it can be much simpler than we expect and he takes us through the simple process they teach at Centred Meditation. Brooke also asks him how long we need to meditate in order to start feeling the benefits and what kind of words or visualisations we need to practice. Brooke also asks Kevin some of the most common questions she’s received over the past few weeks, including: What equipment do I need to start meditating? What apps does he recommend in order to learn meditation? How can I avoid falling asleep when I start meditating? Is there ever any reason to not meditate? How can I maintain a regular practice of meditation? Then, blissfully, Kevin closes today’s episode with a simple guided meditation. Head over to the blog at http://www.slowyourhome.com/149 for links to all of the apps and resources Kevin mentions in today's show, as well as the full blog post. ==== If you're enjoying the show and want to know how to best support it, leave a rating or a review in iTunes or head over to the Patreon page to help support the show financially. In May 2016 Ben and Brooke completed a month-long daily meditation experiment, which proved to be one of the most positive changes Brooke made last year. She’s still an (almost) daily meditator and will talk to anyone and everyone about the massive benefits to be gained from making it a regular part of their day. But she finds there is a handful of common reasons why people don’t want to try meditation: they’re skeptical of its usefuness they dislike the religious or spiritual connotations of the practice they don’t have time to meditate daily they’re scientifically minded and want proof of its effectiveness After meeting Kevin Janks at an event recently and hearing his story, she knew he would be an amazing guest who could help dispel many of these obstacles - because in the past he's used them all himself. Kevin used to struggle with anxiety as a result of a fast-paced, hectic, successful life, and was introduced to meditation by his partner. Initially very (very) skeptical, Kevin eventually conducted his own meditation experiment and couldn’t deny the positive benefits after only a day or two. Since then he’s travelled to India to study many elements of meditation, and in 2015 opened Centred Meditation - Sydney’s first drop-in meditation centre, right in the CBD. He now spends his days helping stressed, overwhelmed professionals learn the process of meditation, and sees daily examples of the power of simply being present. This is such an open, honest conversation and Kevin and Brooke speak about their entry points to meditation, the benefits Kevin has experienced as well as the changes he sees in clients who practice at the studio. They talk about the difference between cynicism and skepticism when it comes to meditation, the value of mindfulness techniques in addition to (or instead of) a formal practise, and the way meditation has impacted both his relationships with others and himself. On November 19th at 8pm, we're dispelling the lies of Black Statistics. In 2007, "What Black Men Think" was name one of the the Best Documentary of the year in the annual Blacktrospective film feature. Now, Janks Morton, Jr.. is back with Hoodwinked, an equally thought-provoking sequel to his groundbreaking directorial debut. This go-round, Janks again handles emcee duties in a project ostensibly designed to debunk a host of harmful stereotypes about African-Americans. He’s helped in that endeavor by an impressive supporting cast comprised of esteemed luminaries like Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, Dr. Boyce Watkins, Dr. Steve Perry, Dr. Ivory Toldson, Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, Dr. Joseph Marshall, Maniko Barthelemy and Kai Jackson. Here, here! The black community owes a debt of gratitude to Janks Morton for his continued commitment to raising African-American cultural consciousness.

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Janks Morton. CEO of iYAGO Entertainment Group, Morton is a filmmaker, author, activist, director, producer, editor, and cinematographer. We'll discuss his book, Why He Hates You!: How Unreconciled Maternal Anger Is Destroying Black Men And Boys. Janks submits that in the System of White Supremacy, many non-white families lack the resources and support they need. When black males leave and/or are removed from the residence, single-parent house holds can produce an environment where children struggle. Morton has concluded that many black boys experience parental divorce at a young age, and harbor resentment and trauma directed at the mother. These unprocessed grievances and pain frequently produce a destructive impact when black boys attempt to bond with black females in the future. We'll also discuss Morton's documentary films, which explode the devastating, Racist lies targeting black males. He encourages us to maintain a heavy level of skepticism when percentages and eye-popping statistics are cited as evidence of black male wickedness. **Pay particular attention to the objections of some of the female callers.
