Interview by Kris PetersIt's not like they have ever needed an excuse for a party, but you can be rest assured when a legitimate reason rears its festive head that the Cosmic Psychos won't fall over themselves complaining. After four decades of delivering their own brand of brutally honest punk rock humour, Cosmic Psychos have dared to allow themselves time for reflection with three massive shows over three ever more massive nights at the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine over December 1, 2 and 3.In true Psychos fashion there will be much fun and merriment to commemorate the occasion, with a Cosmic Psychos branded beer being released to ensure everyone is in the right mood for a party. Each night will see a different selection of bands hand-picked by the Cosmic Psychos themselves, with The Chats, Amyl & The Sniffers and Dune Rats each taking their opportunity to close their chosen night of entertainment while the Cosmic Psychos savour their own beer after giving themselves the second last slot on the nightly run sheet.Pretty clever for a bunch of old fellas. But the party doesn't stop there. Before the fat bloke in a red suit gets stuck in your chimney this December the trio would have also hit South Australia and Western Australia before regrouping for a massive run of East Coast shows in January with Zeke.Must be something in the beer…To find out more details HEAVY tracked down guitarist Macka in a barn somewhere in the US of A where the band are currently on tour with The Chats. It was an entertaining but almost doomed chat when Macka nearly died of thirst after not being able to locate his trusty bottle opener."I think you would probably say both, Kris," he replied when I asked if 40 years was cause for commiserations or congratulations. "I don't think there's either side to it. It's good. We've seen a few things, good and bad, but overall we're still going, and it's good fun."While the sound and thought of a three-day bender to celebrate entering the Naughty 40s might sound like a heap of fun, it's not exactly something that becomes easier to do the more the years pass. We point out that the boys have set the bar possibly unrealistically high."It depends on what the record is," he quipped. "It might be low, we'll see (laughs). We're looking forward to it. There's some great bands playing and all that sort of stuff. We've got people coming from overseas to do it, like Pat Todd. He's nearly 70, and he hasn't even been to Australia yet so this is his first trip. Blowers, Dead Clampetts, etc."In the full interview, Macka talks more about the bands playing over the three nights and why they were asked, whether the band had to taste test the Psychos beer for approval, the after-show festivities, what range of songs they will play over three shows, who he thinks will stay the distance, the possibility of new material and more.

Á Tea For Two with Áine Tyrrell

The Á Tea For Two Podcast is all about bringing you the conversations that happen over cups of teas between two creatives. There are creatives like me who are out front of stage, whose name is their art and I have brought you a year of artists like this so far. Our art is very visible and you know when you are in the presence of it because our music, artworks, poetry is in your earbuds and eye holes. But there are a whole layer of creatives in that process that get us out front and centre that unless you become aware of, you may not know exist, yet their practice and mastery of skills is just as intentional and deep as ours. They dress in black and hide behind desks, iPads, computers, lighting rigs. They may get a clap at the end of the night if us performers remember, but in general they aren't who a crowd remembers going to see. They are an army of unseen arts workers that have the ability to lift a show in ways not many of us are even conscious of.In my continued conversations with creatives, I wanted to bring you one of the most creative souls who truly makes not only my job but so many other touring bands and recording artists jobs next level amazing.  I call him my bandmate even though he is not technically visibly on stage with me, but he is. He is very much there and I am always grateful. He hears, observes and sees things that I can't pick up on, it's not in my skills set, but learning from him has been a great gift over the past 3 years of touring. Over many cups of teas with James Boundy I have learned the art behind what he does. From the very first time he mixed a show of mine at Mullum Fest in 2017, I have loved the feeling he creates on stage and in a venue, but I didn't know the nuts and bolts of the intention behind all that until I started asking more questions. As music lovers, I think it is so enriching to understand more about this side of your listening experience. I love all the nooks and crannies Boundy brought us on through this podcast episode from bass sounds, to ear hairs, to Binaural recording, to mental health on the road for crew... this is an episode worth pouring a big cuppa for. ABOUT JAMES BOUNDY: Boundy is a free lance sound engineer based in Byron Bay. He has had over 15 year experience as a live and studio engineer for bands such as (Dune Rats, Tora, Parcels, The Bird, Last Dinosaurs and many other international and national acts) and run festivals stages from Woodford Folk Festival to St Kilda Festival to Mullum Music Festival. He is a tertiary sound engineer educator and an audio consultant. Boundy's reputation for enhancing the creative environment as well as pulling great sounds make him a valuable addition to any project in either an engineering or production capacity.  website: http://boundysound.com/Support the show

The Chats are an Australian punk rock band that formed in 2016 in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. They describe their sound as 'shed rock'. The current band lineup is composed of guitarist Josh Hardy, drummer Matt Boggis, and bassist and vocalist Eamon Sandwith. The Chats make rambunctious old-school punk peppered with their cheeky, irreverent sense of humor. More interested in beer, smokes, and fast cars than the state of the world, the Chats follow in the tradition of Australian bands like the Cosmic Psychos, the Hard-Ons, and Dune Rats in cranking out raw, energetic punk with a smirking sense of fun and a regular-guy attitude. In this episode all songs selected by The Chats as guests for Australian TV show Rage, on September 14 2019. Who would have thought an album dedicated to Migloo the White Whale would be the catalyst for a chain of events that has seen Melbourne rock/punk outfit Dune Rats sweep all before them in 2022.Since releasing their latest album the impossibly difficult to say out loud Real Rare Whale earlier this year Dune Rats have toured relentlessly, suddenly and unforgivably becoming the darlings of Australian music. They have recorded a classic song by The Angels - with both Rick and John Brewster appearing, played to 1000's of punters in one night, won the Bangalow Billy Cart Derby and been nominated for Best Hard Rock/Metal album at this years ARIA Awards. Not bad for a bunch of self confessed larrikins who don't even take spelling their own name seriously. This weeks release of album single Space Cadet and it's hilariously poignant film clip have ushered in the next chapter of Dune Rats quest for world domination, which early next year sees the battle lines drawn on a 45 date run encompassing the U.S.A, Canada, U.K and Europe.HEAVY tracked down frontman Danny Beus for a chat before his shining star becomes so bright that he no longer needs to bore himself with the trivialities of media promotion. We start by asking him about the latest single Space Cadet."It's one of those ones where it started off - like any one of our songs - the idea in general started off like when you're a kid and you wanna do a million things, but you either don't have the talent to do those things or really process what it takes to do them," he recounted. "Then the crushing realisation of your Mum and Dad telling you to go wash the fucken dishes up kind of brings you back down to reality (laughs). It started off as this joke between us when we were writing that someone has to go and do the dishes and it would be like 'go away, I'm trying to write a rock song here' but you've gotta do the dishes first mate and it all tied into that. That's where the genesis of the song started, and then like any of them we fleshed it out and did some good nah nah's and gave it a few ooh's and then, bang, it was a finished song. It was one of those ones where our producer liked the overall vibe of the song as well."In the full interview Danny talks about the film clip to Space Cadet and sheds some truth on the cash bonanza the band received from winning, the reception to Real Rare Whale, the downright nasty reasons behind naming the album as such, being nominated for the ARIA's, how their acceptance speech might go should they win, the cover of Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again for Triple J, having the Brewster brothers play on the track, the Dune Rats upcoming shows to round out the year, next years massive overseas tour, keeping it fun on the road and more.
