‘Where life had no value, and death sometimes had its price. That is why bounty hunters appeared.' For decades, the Italian, or Spaghetti Western, has entertained and thrilled cinema audiences all over the world. Its distinct style, as well as its inventive musical scores, has influenced and inspired actors, filmmakers, and composers. It is a genre that is still enjoyed today by many. This unusual but entertaining ensemble of films influenced not just the western film as we knew it, but also had a lasting effect on many other movies. Some of which were produced long after Italian westerns had ridden off into the proverbial sunset of cinema history. On today's episode, join Jason Drury and special guest Italian Western music expert John Mansell as they uncover the musical delights of this quirky but important collection of sagebrush sagas. The unique musical sounds crafted by the composers you will hear go largely unnoticed and underappreciated today. Enjoy! John Mansell's book, ITALIAN WESTERN: VIOLENT IMAGE, SAVAGE SOUNDTRACK – THE MUSIC OF SPAGHETTI WESTERNS is available now on Amazon. In this documentary, Neil travels back to his home town of Birmingham to learn more about what he considers to be the city's best kept cultural secret – Grosvenor Road Studios: the family-run sound facility that came to be known as ‘Birmingham's Abbey Road'. Still in operation today, the studios were founded 80 years ago by John Taylor, and his business partner Charles Hollick, to record music - which they did prolifically; as well as expanding into creating soundtracks and recording dialogue for iconic television series' and blockbuster movies. To help reveal the story, Neil talks with John Taylor's wife and creative partner Jean Taylor, their two successful musician sons Christopher and Richard Taylor, and Birmingham popular music academic, Jez Collins, from the Birmingham Music Archive. Then, a cultural detour to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, where Shianne shares her experience of watching a live performance of "Nightmare Before Christmas" with the orchestra. Discover what other movie scores the DSO has in store for the season, including Harry Potter, Batman, and The Lions King. Finally, an age-old question: Are we Michiganders or Michiganians? I do a spotlight on sound mixer-turned-music composer Sean Callery. How many catchy tunes are on the 24 TV show soundtrack? Is his videogame cover of the James Bond theme still one of the best takes on the iconic tune? Why did Jessica Jones & La Femme Nikita get a soundtrack release yet Designated Survivor, Homeland, Bones & Halo still don't have any tracks available to stream? All that and why he's got some nifty movie scores cooking lately! As part of our "theme," we start off by summarizing the illustrious career of film composer Alan Silvestri (including playing a pitch-perfect interview of his by BMI Music). Which of his movie themes is more catchy: Predator or Back to the Future? Outside of Robert Zemeckis, which comedy/western/scifi filmmakers has he collaborated with a ton? All that and which awards he's been gracious enough to win! Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
On Sunday, June 16th, 2024, Jason Drury traveled to London's Barbican Centre to watch and listen to music performed by the world's greatest film music orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra. The evening celebrated the orchestra's 90th anniversary of performing film scores. Under the direction of the equally great Dirk Brossé, they performed suites from twenty scores, some well-known, some underrated, all pure quality. Listening to all that wonderful music gave Jason an idea. Why not produce an Archive Show celebrating the music of the LSO featuring scores all performed by this wonderful ensemble? So, that's what we are going to do today. In addition, as with the concert, Jason will play one cue from the film or a small suite. And, because it is a ‘concert', you will hear several of these suites with as little contribution from your trusted host as possible. Welcome to Cinematic Sound Radio's celebration of the music of the London Symphony Orchestra. Enjoy! —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Joe Wiles, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Jim Wilson, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Sarah Brouns, Aaron Collins, Randall Derchan, Angela Rabatin, Michael Poteet, Larry Reese, Thomas Tinneny, William Burke, Rudy Amaya, Stacy Livitsanis, Rick Laird, Carl Wonders, Nathan Blumenfeld, Lee Wileman, Daniel Herrin, Mike Kohutich, Scott Bordelon, James Alexander, Brett French —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. The delicate tinkling of a pianoforte. The clash of cymbals. The soothing strains of a harp. Music in Austen film adaptations performs a variety of functions: it can set the scene, highlight a character's personality, make us laugh, and make us sigh. A cellist, faculty member at the String Academy of Chicago, and assistant principal in the Elmhurst Symphony, Mudge also has her own podcast, World of Soundtracks, where she offers in-depth explorations of famous movie and TV soundtracks. For a transcript, show notes, and guest bio: https://jasna.org/austen/podcast/ep11Visit our website: www.jasna.orgFollow us on Instagram and FacebookEmail: podcast@jasna.orgMusic clips included in this episode:"Pride and Prejudice"—Pride and Prejudice by Carl Davis, 1995"Dawn"—Pride and Prejudice (Music from the Motion Picture), music by Dario Marianelli and performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, 2005"Mrs. Darcy"—Pride and Prejudice (Music from the Motion Picture), music by Dario Marianelli and performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, 2005"Emma Woodhouse"—Emma (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), music by Isobel Waller-Bridge & David Schweitzer, 2020"Celery Root"—Emma: Music from the Miramax Motion Picture, music by Rachel Portman, 1996"Main Titles"—Emma: Music from the Miramax Motion Picture, music by Rachel Portman, 1996

In this solo episode we dive into the challenges that are facing the Los Angeles movie music industry as the decade evolves. I lay down the following as the main challenges facing the industry: Changing fashions where less movies and TV shows use orchestras The (currently) unprofitable streaming platforms threaten the movie studios as a whole International markets favor competition Union protections favor a small number of musicians making loyalty unlikely AI & improving sound libraries will upend the industry For a transcript of this episode, check out my website. Hope you enjoy this! In a week I will release a conversation with Conductor Ryan Bancroft, and trumpeters Edward Carroll, Dave Bilger, Dovas Lietuvninkas, and Bailey Paugh about the Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar. We close off the month with our monthly conversation with Andres Caro where he will ask me questions about how to listen to classical music! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/artssalon/support

Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, the film music community lost one of its greatest recording engineers, Mike Ross-Trevor. His collaborations with composers such as Jerry Goldsmith and Bruce Broughton have become legendary in the film music world. Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Mike in February 2018 for the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. The two show shows can be heard at cinematicsound.net It was with great sadness that Jason learned of Mike's passing since he had many happy recollections of their interview and Mike has remained a close friend. So, Jason decided to produce a new program by utilizing remastered interview clips from 2018 and by playing some of the fantastic music that Mike was associated with. To give the program a distinct and intimate feel, Mike Ross-Trevor will be the only voice heard throughout, narrating his own recording career and sharing a few memories of the amazing sessions he worked on.
