The Union Jack represents many things for many people, linked to historical pride – but also shame. And, unfortunately, it's become somewhat synonymous with the political Right. So what is Labour's relationship with the flag? Andrew Harrison asks The People's Flag and the Union Jack: An Alternative History of Britain and the Labour Party co-author Gerry Hassan if Labour can reclaim Britishness.     • “I don't think anyone in the UK can be completely objective about the Union Jack. Flags are things we have emotional connections with. The Union Jack's meaning has evolved over centuries.” – Gerry Hassan  • “Lots of people say we have to either identify and feel pride in it, or loathe it – but it's important we allow for a polarity of meanings.” – Gerry Hassan  • “In our current age of culture wars, symbols really matter. And symbols like national flags are highly contested.” – Gerry Hassan  • “Flags are part of who we are as human beings.” – Gerry Hassan      Buy The People's Flag and the Union Jack: An Alternative History of Britain and the Labour Party through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund The Bunker by earning us a small commission for every sale. Support for Scottish independence is still strong but the SNP are clearly in a weaker position, institutionally, reputationally, and ideologically. They have become mired in scandal, their hegemonic grip on politics north of the border looks to be loosening, and yet the constitutional questions about who governs Scotland and how remain relevant and live. Labour's position has clearly strengthened – albeit without ever addressing key questions of democratic renewal and constitutional change. With a UK general election less than a year away, especially while it looks like Labour could win power and form a majority, the context for the democratic left, the future of the UK and Scotland are changing – and with it how and how much the UK is bound together changes. What progressive and democratic reforms are feasible and desirable in this new context and how can the progressive democratic left work together are essential questions on either side of the independence case. To talk this through with us, Neal and Lena were joined by:Gerry Hassan is the author of several books on Scottish and British politics including ‘The Strange Death of Labour Scotland' and ‘The People's Flag and the Union Jack: An Alternative History of Britain and the Labour Party'.Esther Roberton, who was the coordinator of the Scottish Constitutional Convention in the 1990s and has spent more than three decades serving on and chairing national and regional boards across significant areas of policy including health, education and justice, as well as initiatives relating to the Scottish Parliament and as Non-Executive Director of the Scottish Government.Support the showEnjoyed the podcast and want to be a live audience member at our next episode? In this pod, our first live podcast recording, we discuss the state of the relationships between UK and Welsh/Scottish governments and the effect Brexit and the personalities of successive UK administrations has had on the effectiveness of government. We hosted this live event on the week that Gordon Brown produced his proposals for reforming the governance of the UK, so we discuss those proposals and how the Welsh dimension is addressed (or not). We also discuss the interim report from the Welsh Government's Independent Commission of the Constitutional Future of Wales and its decision to focus on three alternative visions for Wales: entrenched devolution, federalism, and independence. Ceri and Matt are joined by Prof Richard Wyn Jones of Cardiff University's Wales Governance Centre to discuss and answer questions from the audience, as well as reflect on our previous podcast on the Welsh and Scottish independence campaigns with Gerry Hassan, Will Hayward, and Jess Blair. We mostly reviewed 2 important essays on the state of ‘Rogue UK’ by Gerry Hassan and Peter A Bell and then a London Times article by Alex Massie.(It’s frothy man!). The BBC excuse for silencing the First Minister was delivered by a slimy guy called Ian Small. We show the clip with John Beattie on The NINE. Finally some good news. Loved by teenagers and military history buffs alike, the book showcases a world that blends accurate military detail with fantastic creations including airships made of whales.  Scott discusses the benefits of writing for a young adult audience. “Adult readers are very fragile and very easy to alarm and scare off, whereas teenagers are incredibly robust readers who can keep going. If you see a teenager who'd really into a book you could drop a brick on their head and they'll keep reading!”Gerry Hassan, commentator and academic in Cultural Policy discusses his latest book, Caledonian Dreaming: The Quest for a Different Scotland. Inspired by the work of Fintan O'Toole following the crash in Ireland, the book looks at the myths Hassan argues are inherent in Scottish identity.
