Get Jen's book 'Lifting Up' and 'Showing Up' on Amazon today! --- In this episode, I sit down with Jen Marr — Human Disruption Specialist, author of Lifting Up and Showing Up, and founder of the organization Showing Up — who brings one of the most extraordinary and hard-earned perspectives on leadership I've ever encountered. Jen shares how being just 700 yards from the finish line during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, combined with her frontline support work after the Sandy Hook school shooting, gave her a transformational understanding of how humans navigate disruption, trauma, and change — and how those exact same principles apply to every entrepreneur and leader running a company today. We dig into why most organizations get communication wrong, why AI will never replace human-to-human connection, and why the cortisol flooding your team's bodies every day can only be overpowered by oxytocin — the bonding hormone that's triggered when a leader genuinely says, "I've got your back." Jen walks us through her "fast and frequent one-on-one" framework, how to handle the emotional overwhelm of employees without becoming their therapist, the growing crisis of "fear of taking part" in Gen Z workers, and how native analogs and native digitals can bridge the workplace communication gap. If you lead a team of any size, this conversation will fundamentally change how you show up for the people around you. Jim talks with John Krakauer—professor of neurology and neuroscience, director of the Center for Study of Motor Learning and Brain Repair at Johns Hopkins, and external faculty at SFI—about his 2017 paper "Neuroscience Needs Behavior: Correcting a Reductionist Bias." They discuss defining behavior as ecologically valid goal-directed action within an animal's umwelt, behavioral decomposition being epistemically prior to neural investigation, bipedal running and Sherrington's spinalized cat experiments as illustrations of that decomposition, what a satisfying neural explanation should actually look like, emergence and neuroscientists' resistance to it, the concept of explanatory autonomy and the "wings don't fly, birds do" framing, downward causality and the traffic jam analogy, Sherrington's own epistemic humility about understanding thought, whether consciousness will eventually be explained the way life was or remain permanently fuzzy, the three traditions of studying the nervous system and their persistent tensions, the problem of double-dipping with coarse-grained behavioral language in neural data, "filler verbs" like "involves" and "underlies" that add surplus meaning to a correlation without doing extra explanatory work, everyday pseudo-explanations like dopamine for unhappiness and oxytocin for love, the identity fallacy, LLMs as scientific sparring partners and critical reviewers, Krakauer's vertigo at the current moment and the possibility of retiring if AI generates better intuitions, interpretable AI as a new subject for neuroscience and psychology, Jim's own artificial consciousness project building a rudimentary white-tailed deer, distinguishing consciousness from cognition and sentience, separating the machinery of consciousness from its contents, Nagel's "What Is It Like to Be a Bat?" and echolocation as conscious content, multiple realizability and its being pervasive and fatal to naive reductionism, the mereological fallacy and mirror neurons as ground zero for multiple fallacies, Marr's three levels and the direction of the scientific project from behavioral goal to algorithm to neural implementation, the bradykinesia paper finding that Parkinson's patients move slowly because they want to move more slowly, the C. elegans connectome and the limits of that knowledge, the Jonas and Kording microprocessor paper, and much more.
Episode 38 – Obscure: After the Event United by a shared love of one band, Graham and Chris close Season Six with their most personal episode yet - a sun‑drenched, queue‑length, bladder‑testing, heart‑thumping deep dive into Pet Shop Boys' Obscure concerts at Camden's Electric Ballroom. What begins as a simple “after the event” recap quickly becomes a full‑blown oral history of the week London turned into PSB City: 5am superfans, numbered wristbands, Chicken Shop suitcase storage, tactical toilet breaks, merch‑lounge carpets, and the strange, beautiful camaraderie of a crowd who'd waited forty years for a night like this. From there, the Pod Cast Boys relive the gigs in forensic, front‑row detail - the dry ice, the wallow‑heavy setlist, the thrill of seeing their heroes in person, and the emotional punch of hearing deep cuts in a tiny room with 1,500 ecstatic fans and their closest friends. They celebrate new drummer Max Blunos' death metal roots, legacy guest stars Sylvia, Mark and Johnny F-ing Marr, Neil's lectern‑top lyric folder, and the five times an entire ballroom embraced the words: “Tonight - no hits!” Along the way they revisit their own “scientific” setlist predictions, the chaos of their travel logistics, decode “the vibe”, and share the joy of experiencing Pet Shop Boys with lifelong friends, new global acquaintances, and a surprising number of people wearing In Depth T‑shirts. Finally, they wrap the season with the inaugural In Depth Obscure Awards - honouring the strangest, boldest, most unexpected moments of the Obscure era - and reflect on why these shows felt like a celebration not just of PSB's deep cuts, but of their own teenage imperial phases too. A gig diary; a fan documentary; a tribute to the power of community - the perfect finale to a season that's traced four decades of Pet Shop Boys from Please to Volume to Obscure.

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! When we watch movies & shows at the movies or, increasingly, on TV, the soundtrack is ever-present to set the mood and enhance the story. But we never stop to consider its' role, how it's changed over the years, and how it interacts with other elements, such as the title sequence. This episode we look at how the use of soundtracks has changed over the last 30 or more years and consider some very creative soundtracks! In Rock News, we look at The Hollywood Vampires, Cyndi Lauper, Deep Purple, David Lee Roth and Devo, who are all heading out on the road, while the latest fad out of the US is Lollipop Star, a sweet that plays a tune as you suck it!

In 1999, Logan Marr was kidnapped, and the state of Maine thought it was for the best. In their eyes, the toddler's mother was too poor, too uneducated, too redneck to raise her baby girl. So, they gave her to someone who could. And then someone else. And then someone else. Until finally, in 2001, Christy Marr was finally given back her baby girl: in a casket. This isn't our typical story. This is the story of a legal kidnapping, a desperate mother, a corrupt system, and a state employee who believed she was above the law until finally… she wasn't. - Sources:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eTYeCoYyxm58DXXdoFbHQyWHlWbcH9iKGIefFcQToW4/edit?tab=t.y2yayotxnlcb Listen to our new show, "THE CONSPIRACY FILES"!: -Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5IY9nWD2MYDzlSYP48nRPl -Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-conspiracy-files/id1752719844 -Amazon/Audible - https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ab1ade99-740c-46ae-8028-b2cf41eabf58/the-conspiracy-files -Pandora - https://www.pandora.com/podcast/the-conspiracy-files/PC:1001089101 -iHeart - https://iheart.com/podcast/186907423/ -PocketCast - https://pca.st/dpdyrcca -CastBox - https://castbox.fm/channel/id6193084?country=us - Stay Connected: Join the Murder in America fam in our free Facebook Community for a behind-the-scenes look, more insights and current events in the true crime world: https://www.facebook.com/groups/4365229996855701 If you want even more Murder in America bonus content, including ad-free episodes, come join us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/murderinamerica Instagram: http://instagram.com/murderinamerica/ Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/people/Murder-in-America-Podcast/100086268848682/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MurderInAmerica TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theparanormalfiles and https://www.tiktok.com/@courtneybrowen Feeling spooky?

Tomaso Poggio is the Eugene McDermott professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, an investigator at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, a member of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and director of both the Center for Biological and Computational Learning at MIT and the Center for Brains, Minds, and Machines. Tomaso believes we are in-between building and understanding useful AI That is, we are in between engineering and theory. He likens this stage to the period after Volta invented the battery and Maxwell developed the equations of electromagnetism. Tomaso has worked for decades on the theory and principles behind intelligence and learning in brains and machines. I first learned of him via his work with David Marr, in which they developed "Marr's levels" of analysis that frame explanation in terms of computation/function, algorithms, and implementation. Since then Tomaso has added "learning" as a crucial fourth level. I will refer to you his autobiography to learn more about the many influential people and projects he has worked with and on, the theorems he and others have proved to discover principles of intelligence, and his broader thoughts and reflections. Right now, he is focused on the principles of compositional sparsity and genericity to explain how deep learning networks can (computationally) efficiently learn useful representations to solve tasks. Technology has always been a double-edged sword. As the workplace and culture shift, we as humans are seeing more collaboration, access, and the ability to communicate across borders. But, it's also leading us to more stress, anxiety, depression, and social isolation. Those dopamine hits are no joke! This all impacts how we need leaders to show up and lead. We have to upskill our leaders for more connection, conversation, and collaboration. AI will be taking over a lot of the drudgery, so leadership now looks different from what it did 20 or 30 years ago. And for some leaders, there is a big skill gap between intent and impact. Something my guest today calls the Awkward Zone as she helps leaders to Own the Awkward.Today, Jen Marr shares the three forces behind our fundamental workplace shifts and how this has changed the role of leaders. She talks about that Awkward Zone and how to navigate through it. She shares the Barbell concept, necessary to build up healthy, productive employees. We have an interesting discussion about time - how leaders track it, spend it, and can find more ways to spend it on their people rather than on useless tasks. And Jen shares what may finally shake us up from the unhealthy ways tech has taken over our lives at the cost of real connection, and what that flashpoint might be for us.
