Brenna and Joe return with their first book to film adaptation episode with a discussion of Scott Westerfeld's 2005 dystopian novel Uglies and the long delayed 2024 film adaptation by McG.This is...a miss. The book has extremely shallow commentary and has editing issues, while the film has (yes) ugly CGI hoverboard action and an unconvincing love interest. And then there's Laverne Cox as a villain who forces children to undergo surgery, which is just unfortunate considering the current political transphobic moment. Yikes! Wanna connect with the show? Tune in as I chat with Costume Designer Cris Araujo. We get into her love for creating costumes for futuristic worlds, her unique path from Key Costumer to Designer, her rich heritage and her love for top fashion designers like Rick Owens. Her latest film Uglies is based on the dystopian novel by Scott Westerfeld. It is set in a future post-scarcity world in which everyone is considered an "Ugly" until they are then turned "Pretty" by extreme cosmetic surgery when they reach the age of 16. What Cris and her team brought to the screen is visually stunning and it was a pleasure to get insight into her creative process and more. Thank you so much Cris for having coffee with me. Oh man, do we have a packed show for you this week! With Lafayette enjoying his vacation in Hawaii, Carlos, Laura, and Marie take over the mics for an unforgettable episode. We kick things off with a lively discussion on road trips—do you still enjoy them, or are you fed up? The gang shares their own travel nightmares, including a wild childhood story of Carlos getting left behind during a family trip to Tijuana. Has he been scarred for life, or does he find humor in the chaos? Next, we dive into some controversial comments by comedian Adam Carolla, who recently claimed that superhero movies are “homoerotica.” We break down what's wrong with that outdated viewpoint and debate why Carolla seems stuck in the past. After the break, we review Netflix's adaptation of *Uglies,* the dystopian tale based on Scott Westerfeld's 2005 novel. Set in a future world where everyone undergoes extreme cosmetic surgery at age 16 to become "Pretty," the story follows Tally Youngblood as she rebels against the forced conformity of her society. We unpack the film's themes of transformation, conformity, and the dark side of beauty standards, and we explore whether it does justice to the beloved young adult series. Marie then shares updates on her music classes, showing off some hidden talents that leave us all impressed. Finally, we wrap things up with a hilarious dive into old wives' tales—do they make any sense, or are they just bizarre superstitions passed down through generations? All that and more on this week's episode of Nerds Talking! Tune in for laughs, debates, and unexpected twists. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nerdstalking/support
I was fortunate to catch up with Scott Westerfeld just before he flew out to LA for the Uglies Netflix premiere. In our conversation we explored everything from filters and teeth whitening to the impact of moving between Spain and the US on perceptions of beauty. I asked Scott if Americans live in a "Pretty" world and if I’m seen as living among the "Uglies." Scott shared his thoughts on the quest for thrills in our comfortable lives—comparing it to not having a lion to chase us anymore. We also delved into the dystopian world of Uglies and its reflections on our reality, discussing the tension between control and chaos that resonates with teens caught between conforming to norms and rebelling against them. These are just a few highlights from our 40-minute chat. I would like to have kept the conversation going all day, given that there were so many themes to explore!

Today Karly & Mia are throwing it back to the 2010s YA Dystopian Fiction era and diving into the worlds of "Shatter Me" by Tahereh Mafi and "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld. In this episode, they provide spoiler-free background insights into both captivating series, exploring the dystopian landscapes and compelling characters that have captured their 10-year old (and now 24-year old) imaginations. Join the girls as they pit these two beloved series against each other to determine which one reigns supreme. Speaking of the 2010s, remember when we all downloaded instagram for the first time and followed anyone within a 10 mile radius? Karly & Mia recently hit a wall and unleashed an Instagram following purge. The girls are ready to rant about how to feel empowered to hit that unfollow button with no second thoughts. If you need any convincing to clear out your following, Karly seriously envisioned her villain arc movie montage and Mia was quite literally giggling and kicking her feet in the aftermath. But actually though, the endless scroll of perfection and supply of engagement pics is exhausting, and no one has time for that in 2024. Happy reading besties!

This month for our conversation on airships, we read Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. Here is a brief description of the book: It is the cusp of World War I. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship, and the most masterful beast in the British fleet. Aleksandar Ferdinand, a Clanker, and Deryn Sharp, a Darwinist, are on opposite sides of the war. But their paths cross in the most unexpected way, taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure….One that will change both their lives forever. TIme to finish another series on Throwback Paperback, as we finish Extras, and thereby Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series. In this book we get the conclusion of Aya's quest to be popular and discover the hidden goals of the aliens. Tally comes back with strong main character energy, and Shay comes back as the classic worst. Aya reveals that this whole series is bigger than we ever thought, and we thoroughly enjoy the reading. You can't miss this episode as we finish the whole series. Next week we will be reading chapters 1-19 of They Stay, book 1 in our new series, They Stay. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/throwback-paperback/support
Thank you Scott Westerfeld for writing another book because we are incredibly excited and happy to stay in the Uglies world with the follow-up fourth book, Extras. We've switched to a new protagonist, whom we enjoy, and we love the haunting and scary social media aspect of this book. Is it maybe a little too close to home? Possibly, but we really get into it. We follow Aya Fuse on her meteoric rise from complete nobody as an Extra to one of the most popular people in the city and Tally Youngblood sliding into her DMs. The book is a treat, and hopefully our episode is too.Next week we will be reading chapters 28-54 of book 4 in the series, Extras. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/throwback-paperback/support
Forging right ahead, this week we cover the first half of Pretties in Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series. Things have changed because Tally has been made a Pretty, and she has a new best friend and love interest in Zane. They start a journey of rediscovery as they start to question the Pretty system. They develop a strategy to resist Pretty-brain, and try to inspire their friends to follow. It's a great reading, and we're definitely still enjoying the series. We're both holding out hope that this series continues to be excellent. Next week we will be reading chapters 21-39 of book 2 in the series, Pretties. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/throwback-paperback/support
New series time, we are starting Scott Westerfeld's Uglies, and we are pleasantly surprised to discover that these books really were at the beginning of the Dystopian revolution. We enter a post-cultural world where everyone becomes surgically beautiful when they reach adulthood, except the rebels who live out of the society in the Smoke. Will our protagonist Tally join them? Will she develop a personality? Will this book continuously and pleasantly surprise us? We shall see! Next week we will be reading chapters 25-50 of book 1 in the series, Uglies. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/throwback-paperback/support

This week, we discuss Extras, the release to TV sequel to Uglies. Listen for outlines of fanfictions based on popular tropes, why acknowledging your girl-on-girl drama just isn't enough, or why playing rock-paper-scissors doesn't work in an auditory medium.
We discuss the conclusion to the original Uglies trilogy and realize that Westerfeld (who we refer to by his first name as if we know him) is really good at writing. Some truly groundbreaking stuff.
We read Pretties while eating Triscuits and then chatted (mainly about sex before marriage). We also found out that Scott Westerfeld wrote another series connected to Uglies, and that there's a Netflix film coming out starring Joey King, and we have THOUGHTS!
For their first episode ever, Delaney and Bennett read and discuss a middle school classic: Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. Listen on to hear about hating girl-on-girl drama, accepting brain lesions in order to live sustainably, and our middle school memories coming back to life.
Acclaimed author, Maggie Stiefvater describes Call Down the Hawk, the first book in a brand-new trilogy, as a “big, strange, weird novel” full of all of the things she likes in both novels and life. This includes art, magic, music, and mythology. Call Down the Hawk follows Ronan Lynch, a character who can take things out of his dreams and bring them into real life, and Jordan Hennessy, an artist, a thief, and maybe something else. If you're a fan of young-adult literature, you're probably familiar with Maggie's work. She is the New York Times best-selling author of The Raven Cycle, The Shiver Trilogy, and The Scorpio Races. On this episode, we'll talk with her and award-winning author Scott Westerfeld about what it's like to expand a fictional universe for eager fans. Scott is the author of The Uglies Series, The Leviathan Trilogy, and Impostors, among many other titles. Special thanks: * Music composed by Lucas Elliot Eberl * Produced and edited by Bridget Benjamin * Associate Produced by Mackenzie Cutruzzula * Sound mix and recording by Daniel Jordan * *Suzanne McCabe is the Editor of Scholastic Kids Press
Kales and Alyson read the first five chapters of Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. Alyson makes predictions and Kales tries not to give the end away.
What do you do with a story that's too big to be contained in a book series? This week, we're talking about Horizon, a new multiplatform adventure for 9- to 12-year olds. Joining us in the studio are New York Times bestselling author Scott Westerfeld (Uglies, Leviathan, Afterworlds), game designer Gavin Brown, and editor Nick Eliopulos to talk about the unique approach Scholastic's multiplatform team takes to storytelling. Aurora, a friend of the show, joins us for episode 20 of Tales From the Fandom and continues the trend of guests from Canada. Aurora hails from Vancouver, Canada and dabbles in many different fandoms. We discuss a few of them on today's episode. We start off the show talking about Harry Potter and how she got into the series. We hit on characters we like, favorite books and characters that we felt are overrated. Aurora and I then discuss at length the "Riordanverse" with the Percy Jackson series. We talk about how she got into it and which of the series she likes the best. We also discuss The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase and the newly released Trials of Apollo book. She then hits me with two book series recommendations. The first is by Scott Westerfeld and it is the Leviathan series. The second is The Elemental Trilogy by Sherry Thomas. She explains the backgrounds behind both books and why she recommends them. Lastly, she talks to me about a tv show that aired in 2007 that she recommends watching - at least the pilot, called The Black Donnellys.
