Genre films are a great way to build a fanbase and community. Horror in particular is one of the most successful and loved genres that, much like its villains, never seems to die. It's also where many indie features can thrive and reach an audience without a major studio attached. Today we have the team behind the punk/slasher film, The Ranger, who have done just that. Spring Breakers (movie 2012) Jules’ pick is the most commercial work from Writer-Director Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy). This look at the drugs and debauchery of Florida over spring break plays with time and structure to evoke a drug fueled conception of reality. The cast are made up of Harnony’s wife and three Disney-star level actresses, plus James Franco. The colors and tone are all over the top. A fun romp and maybe not the best Korine flick, but a standout for its budget and cast. You can stream on Showtime or purchase on Amazon and iTunes. We’re starting a new topic this week with a returning guest host, Giaco Furino. Before digging into the first pick John recommends “Stranger Things” from Netflix. ______________________ Shock Value by Jason Zinoman (Book, 2011) Giaco’s pick is a non-fiction book that explores the rise of the ‘new horror’ genre in the 60′s through the 80′s. The book explores masters of horror that wrested the genre from the likes of Hitchcock and Corman. Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left is used to define the strong shift from code films into post-code. The genesis of the film Alien is explored in the rocky career of Dan O’Bannon. You can purchase Shock Value on Amazon. ______________________ NEXT WEEK: More More Scarier with Elvis Costello’s rendition of the song “Psycho.” You can follow us on twitter @newtoyoushow and you can leave comments down below! Garth Nix may sound like the name of a country music superstar, but he's actually just the humble, award-winning author behind several fantasy series. This week's book, Sabriel, debuted in 1995 as the first entry in Nix's Old Kingdom series, and the novel remains notable for its lead character, its unique take on magic, and the small (for a fantasy novel) cast of characters.Special guest Giaco Furino returns to the show this week, sharing with Andrew and Craig his thoughts on the Redundancy of Michael Crichton, magical vo-tech school, and talking bananas.

Keith Vincent, John Holt, Mary Varn, are excited to be joined again this week by Giaco Furino. Giaco is particularly qualified to discuss our latest topic "Scary," as he is a contributor to FEARnet.com, and an avid fan of the horror genre. We've got two more picks to go over, and they're another "3rd" movie and another short story! ___________ Segment 1: Halloween III : Season of the Witch (film) Giaco's pick for "Scary" is the third in the Halloween film series, produced by John Carpenter. This movie is a departure from the Michael Meyers saga of the first two Halloween movies. Unfortunately the plan to expand the series to be "scary things that happen on Halloween" was never realized. This movie is a great combination of corny and creepy, very fun. Definitely worthy of merchandising, like a Skeleton for ages 4 and up! Actually the above product is from Retroband. Halloween III is available on Amazon and iTunes. _________________ Segment 2: The Most Dangerous Game (short story) Mary's "Scary" pick is a short story from the January 19th, 1924 issue of Collier's Weekly magazine. In this tale Richard Connell penned a story that has inspired dozens of films, books and other tales for the past almost 90 years. You can read this tale for free online most places and you can find it on Amazon if you'd like to pay for it. ______________________ You can follow us on twitter @newtoyoushow and you can leave comments down below! Giaco is particularly qualified to discuss our latest topic "Scary," as he is a contributor to FEARnet.com, and an avid fan of the horror genre. ___________ Segment 1: 'The Veldt' or 'The World the Children Made' by Ray Bradbury (short story) John's pick for "Scary" is the Ray Bradbury's sci-fi short story, first published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1950. The story was later collected in "The Illustrated Man." An audiobook version by Leonard Nimoy was released. "The Veldt" is available on Amazon and most major bookstores and libraries. Stephen Colbert reading for PRI can be found online. _________________ Segment 2: Poltergeist III (film) Keith's "Scary" pick is the third in the Poltergeist film family. Marked by the tragic loss of the child actor, this horror movie has drawn rumors of a real-world curse, as some of these films will when coincidence has cast and/or crew from a project dealing with various unfortunate events. You can find Poltergeist III on Amazon streaming and in physical media. It is also available on iTunes. ______________________ You can follow us on twitter @newtoyoushow and you can leave comments down below! Did you know that Stephen King's The Stand isn't a taut legal thriller? It's just one of the many things that Andrew and Craig learned about the book this week! Special guest Giaco Furino walks Andrew and Craig through the apocalyptic (and then post-apocalyptic), Lord of the Rings-inspired, vaguely supernatural "complete and uncut edition" of the book, which the author himself describes as "boss."
