Stewart was a diverse writer with a strong interest in history, name, place, and the environment, but this thoughtful novel is his most famous work and inspired Stephen King's The Stand, various musical efforts, and the video game The Last of Us. We look at the origins of The Stand, a post-apocalyptic nightmare after Captain Trips, a virulent influenza, has killed off most of the world's population. An epic battle ensues between good and evil, personified by two memorable characters, one of whom, Randall Flagg, makes his first awful appearance, though it won't be the last in King's novels. We cover the difficulty of producing the work and where it fits in King's legacy. We also review his book On Writing, part-memoir, part how-to guide, and read some sections on being a hack, stupid criticism, and why to write. We also talk about some dogs. Also F-bomb alert. Even if you're not a King reader, I think you'll get something out of this episode. Episode 162: Bring Out Your Dead - Sickness and Pandemics in Speculative Fiction   Sweeping pandemics turn up often in fantasy and sci-fi, whether they form part of the back drop or the main thrust of the plot. There is something about a plague that captures the imagination and short cuts our survival circuits in a way that other natural disasters - Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Volcanic eruptions - just doesn't touch. So what is it about a good pandemic that grips us? From post apocalyptic fiction discussing the dual nature of morality, such as Stephen King's The Stand or Kirkman, Moore and Adlard's The Walking Dead, to epic fantasy looking at the creation of anti heroes, such as Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard series or Give the Dark My Love by Beth Revis, a deadly plague hits our deepest fears where other acts of god just don't reach. This week the dragons take a tour through pandemics in speculative fiction, starting with the history and epidemiology of The Black Death and The Great Plague in Europe, following the scars that exist on our racial memories even today and following the trail to its conclusion in SFF. A wild ride and not for the squeamish!   Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic

Book Vs. Movie Podcast Stephen King Bonus Ep "The Stand” The 1994 Movie Cast & Our Picks for the Cast of the Upcoming TV series   It’s another special “Stephen King Bonus Ep” and Margo D. and Deana Marie of the Twisted Philly are back and wanting to discuss quite possibly the biggest piece of Stephen King news that we have heard in ages. For many years there have been rumors of adapting King’s 1978 novel The Stand to either a TV series or as a film trilogy. So far we have had one adaptation--Mick Garris’ 1994 mini-series which ran on ABC-TV and is either beloved or reviled by hardcore fans. None other than Ben Affleck himself wanted to create a movie trilogy but the project never took off and remained in turnaround. So CBS All Access decided to say “hold my beer!” and create their own 2020 limited TV series which has King fans buzzing. The story is about an apocalyptic flu virus (“Captain Trips”)  that is spread across the U.S. and wipes out 99% of the population is one of King’s most revered works. The people who survive the flu break up into two camps: The “good people” (including Stu Redmond, Frannie Goldsmith, and Mother Abigail Freemantle) head off to Boulder,  CO. The “evil people” (including Trashcan Man and Lloyd Henreid) make Las Vegas their home In 1990 King released an unabridged version of the novel with an additional 400+ pages. There are scenes including a character called “The Kid” and Stu meeting Jim Morrison--but the1994 mini-series is mostly based on the abridged version. Will CBS All Access include anything from the 1990 version? In this ep, Margo D. & Deana are all about casting. We go in depth on how we feel the 1994 casting of our favorite characters and then each pick our personal choice for the new show. CBS casting people--please let us know if you are listening! You can listen to this episode using the link below.   In this special Stephen King bonus episode Margo & Deana discuss: A quick story behind The Stand and why SK fans revere it so much. Our personal history with both the novel and the 1994 TV mini-series Our favorite (and least favorite) casting choices for the mini-series Our top casting picks for the new TV series Just how close to the book will the shows be compared to the 1994 mini-series? We take all factors into account, concoct our film, and then offer a Final Pitch to you in movie trailer form. By the end of each episode, we will Remake This Movie RIGHT! Our show is broken down into three distinct parts: The Original: We discuss the original film’s impact, some quick trivia bits, what worked the best from the film and therefore must remain in our upcoming remake, and what didn’t work or what needs to be changed for today’s audiences. The Remake: We put together our movie! What story do we want to tell, how close to the original will it be, who will star, and ultimately who should direct our eventual cinematic masterpiece? Our hosts work together to put together one cohesive movie, but there is one caveat - Each host has one ‘CUT!’ throughout the episode to employ which could completely derail the entire film.
