Welcome back to the Independent Filmmaker's Guide. In today's episode we dive right into one of the later challenges along the filmmaking journey - getting your film in front of your potential audience. How to actually break through with ratings and reviews in key places. The landscape is always changing and tomorrow it may be different. In the meantime, these particular algorithms on streaming platforms hold a lot of sway as to what movies actually get "shelf space" in their store. With this in mind, we here at IFG share the great news that our indie horror film HERD (Steven Pierce, James Allerdyce, Matt Mundy) is now released in the US and in an increasing number of other territories around the world. But in order to take advantage of all of this potential exposure we ask our listeners directly for their support. As we often do with podcasts but rarely seem to do in film, we talk about the importance of not just watching indie films but rating and reviewing them as well.In that, we also tackle the pivotal role of indie filmmakers in shaping a vibrant film industry, especially in light of recent strikes against the AMPTP. More so, we extend an invitation to you - yes, you, our treasured listeners - to join this journey. By watching, rating, and reviewing HERD, you're not simply showing support; you're helping independent films prove their worth in a sea of studio-backed blockbusters. And in this digital era, your ratings and reviews directly impact a film's positioning and success. And a special shoutout to the wonderful people of Poplar Bluff, Missouri - as well as Doniphan and Van Buren...your support and graciousness to our cast and crew are at the center of what made shooting this film possible.Links mentioned in the show:to follow the herd, and see more information about the movie, visit HERD.filmWatch/Stream on AppleTV or PrimeUK DVD reviewUK DVD purchaseRate/Review on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDbIFG is created by Framework Productions, produced and hosted by Steven Pierce, James Allerdyce, and Matt Mundy. One room. Just one room. Horror and thriller movies have used the technique often. It makes a film almost like a stage play where actors and actresses can shine. The new Shutter exclusive release, BROOKLYN 45 (2023), most certainly does this. There are only a handful of performers and truly one and only one room for 95% of the film. A group of friends, both military veterans and intelligence employees, meet up at the end of World War II for a dinner set up by their friend and leader Lieutenant Colonel Clive Hockstatter. Though it is time to celebrate as the war has ended, Hockstatter's wife recently took her own life. Soon, the Lieutenant Colonel has let his guests know he has another intention for the invite that is more than dinner and reminiscing. Highly successful independent filmmaker Ted Geoghegan is back as writer/director for this new supernatural horror movie. The film stars a number of fine actors in an ensemble cast including genre favorite Jeremy Holm. Your co-hosts take a look at the recently released thriller and give their thoughts.
Recorded on July 9 prior to the Screen Actors' Guild strike, Rick has a wonderful chat with Jeremy Holm. We discuss how a dirty cappuccino machine brought Jeremy into the horror genre, having the character of The Ranger written especially for him, being directed by Jenn Wexler, the possibilities of sequels, discussing the tenderness of the character with co-star, Chloe Levine & more! Then we get into what has been Rick's favorite movie of the year so far, Brooklyn 45, in which Jeremy plays Archibald Stanton, working for director, Ted Geoghegan during a pandemic, the depth & richness of the characters, the atrocities of war, the potential of that film being performed live on stage, the ongoing writers' strike & then Jeremy compliments Rick & leaves him speechless! Please subscribe, review & give us that 5 star boop!

Producing an indie pilot for a potential series is almost like making half of a feature film, but with its own unique challenges. In addition to the usual hurdles, it also entails conceiving hours and hours of future content and story arcs, selling those ideas to potential buyers or investors. It is a different fork of the same river as features, but many times involves a very large creative and financial commitment, with less time and fewer resources overall. Today our host, Steven Pierce, talks with writer and director Blake McWilliam who assembled a very talented group for his pilot, the comedy “Timberwood”.At the end of today's episode, be sure to catch fellow host and colleague, James Allerdyce, who joins Steven for detailed and practical takeaways about Blake's experience."A hilarious new comedy series about what it's really like to be a summer camp counselor. The role of Producer for a movie often wears many hats. And in indie filmmaking they often wear hats upon hats. What do they do? They make it happen. Today we speak with Sam Goldberg about his journey throughout the creation of his latest film, SILO. He'll talk through everything from securing locations for filming to finding theaters for distribution, and all the relationships formed along the way.
It's been called the textbook operation of World War II. It was the greatest prison rescue ever; over 2000 prisoners of war liberated and not one them or their liberators killed. Unbelievably, the liberation of Los Baños prison camp by the 511th Parachute Regiment and Hunter's Philippine Guerrillas went largely unheralded. To share the story of this amazing operation, the MacArthur Memorial hosted Jeremy Holm, author of When Angels Fall: From Toccoa to Tokyo, the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment in World War II.

New in this update:Wednesday evening COVID-19 updateThere is another case of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island. Currently there are 12 active cases of the virus. Province wide, there were 115 new cases confirmed since yesterday but no deaths.Cancer care centre promised for Nanaimo Regional General HospitalNDP Leader John Horgan is promising Nanaimo a cancer care centre within the next decade. Horgan's 10 year cancer plan includes “investing in dedicated teams providing a full continuum of care, and new equipment to deliver leading-edge prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment services.” Currently, Nanaimo's Regional General Hospital's cancer clinic sees 34 patients a day, which is more than 50 per cent higher than just three years ago. Despite this, there is no oncologist on staff at NRGH. A report by the Nanaimo Medical Staff Association says more specialists and diagnostics are needed to meet what it calls "the overwhelming demand" for cancer services.City of Nanaimo to review building permit processThe City of Nanaimo has hired a consultant to review its building permit process. Councillors say they receive lots of emails from frustrated homeowners and developers who say they're waiting too long for permits. The city's Director of Development Approvals told this week's council meeting that it can take up to four months to get building permits for large commercial developments, but smaller projects like one or two homes takes less time. Jeremy Holm says his 16 person staff is doing all it can to keep up with record setting numbers of applications."The volume of work is substantial so time to actually get to the full code review and the complexity of the applications is substantial as well. So when you look around at other communities, those timelines, they're not far off and in many cases, better than in other municipalities."—Jeremy Holm, City of Nanaimo Director of Development Approvals. The review will compare systems in other municipalities and will make recommendations to the city in January. After complaint, masks now mandatory at Nanaimo's RCMP detachmentAn Extinction Rebellion activist says Nanaimo RCMP are not following COVID-19 safety rules, when it comes to dealing with prisoners. Howard Breen told the Vancouver Island Free Daily that officers at the Nanaimo detachment who interacted with him did not wear masks, nor did they maintain two metres physical distance when he was in cells. The 66 year old was arrested on September the 29th, for blocking logging trucks near Port Renfrew. He says officers removed his mask and did not ask whether he has underlying medical conditions. Breen has asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Breen has written to the provincial health officer, outlining his concerns. Two days after the arrest, masks were made mandatory for all employees at the Nanaimo RCMP detachment.

Genre films are a great way to build a fanbase and community. Horror in particular is one of the most successful and loved genres that, much like its villains, never seems to die. It's also where many indie features can thrive and reach an audience without a major studio attached. Today we have the team behind the punk/slasher film, The Ranger, who have done just that. Still Here is a film about resilience, following the heartbreaking story of a missing 12-year-old girl, and the pain her family endures. In a previous talk, we were able to sit down with the director and cinematographer of the film, where director Vlad Feier stressed that films are made by people, not equipment. And so, in this episode we are joined by some of the very people who brought this story to life: cast members Maurice McRae, Johnny Whitworth, Jeremy Holm along with their director, to talk about about their personal processes for the roles and their experiences on indie sets. Passion, performance, and planning. Creating an independent feature takes all of them. From knowing how to get from your actors both planned and improvised performances, to knowing how to light a room and prepare camera rigs, there is always a need for a plethora of knowledge, experience, gear, and even budget. But as we hear from both the cinematographer and director of the new indie feature, Still Here, in the end films are made with people, not equipment.IFG is created by Framework Productions. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. With the arrival of the highly acclaimed horror film THE RANGER (2019) on Shudder (and disc), actor Jeremy Holm has been brought to the attention of the horror fan community. He starred as the title character of the film. In a long line of slasher and sociopathic characters, his take has been called refreshing many times, almost as much as it has been called frightening. While at Scare-A-Con New England, some members of the Dark Discussions crew were able to meet Jeremy as he mingled and met all his many fans. The convention was oddly the first horror convention he attended but the experience left him aware of the impact he’s had in the present horror film era. Last week, Dark Discussions reviewed and critiqued the movie. However, this week we were able to get Jeremy Holm to join us for an interview to discuss his perspective on the film, some behind the scenes aspects, and some upcoming horror projects he is participating in. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Another surprising Shudder exclusive, the film THE RANGER dropped earlier this year. A prototype throwback to the 1980’s slasher films, the movie changes it up a bit with some back story that is not expected in such movies. Actor Jeremy Holm who stars as the title character met members of the Dark Discussions Podcast at New England Scare-A-Con in June. Their interest in the film grew and they decided to take a look at it. When Chelsea and her four friends flee a punk rock party when law enforcement raid it, her boyfriend Garth stabs a police officer. Now on the run, they head to a state park where her family has roots. Unfortunately for them, a local park ranger is there who has other things on his mind. And the results bring back Chelsea’s personal history that she has been running away from since she was a child. Receiving fairly good reviews, the movie was directed by first time director Jenn Wexler. With a strong cast including Chloë Levine, the movie’s real star is Jeremy Holm in a dominating performance that has been drawing positive accolades from both critics and fans alike. The beauty of small theatres is that they act as little pockets of experimentation. They are smaller and more adaptable and willing to try lots of different things to get people in the door. That's why last week Screenland Armour hosted a kick ass free screening of The Ranger directed by Jenn Wexler. A small budget slasher film with a fiesty indepededent spirit was exactly what I needed to start the work week. The Ranger at its core is a movie about a girl whose uncle dies in the woods only to be rescued by a forest ranger. The titular ranger (Jeremy Holm) is not the good guy he seems. Years later Chelsea(Chloe Levine) now a young woman runs with a group of punk rockers. During a raid on a night club they are hanging out in the group shoot a police officer and decide a cabin in the woods is the perfect place to run to. Chelsea leads the group to the cabin her deceased uncle bequeathed her. The ranger recognizing Chelsea begins to come after her and her friends. The Ranger leans into its label as a a punk rock slasher. All of the characters would willingly define themselves by that label. They go to punk rock concerts, they dress punk, and most importantly they have that fuck you mentality we commonly associate with that genre. That being said as we are establishing our main characters the punk rock label is never a mask our characters can hide behind. If they are assholes, they are punk assholes. If they are ditzy and silly than they are ditzy and silly punks. In short punk rock is not a panacea for everyone's personality issues. I appreciate that level of introspection. It gives a fullness to the characters that makes the punkness of the movie feel more like a contribution as opposed to a contrivance. The soundtrack is absolutely bonkers. Comprised mostly of west coast punk the sountrack is a wonderful hodgepodge of new and old. You will find Rotten UK, The Polyester Wags, and The Lobstrosities to name a few on this absolutely killer mix tape. It is clear that the soundtrack was handled with the same loving care the movie was given which is a truly rare thing nowadays. The acting in this movie by the supporting cast is servicable. There is no one stealing scenes from Chelsea or the ranger. They are mostly standins for traditional slasher archtypes only with punk and modern sensibilitites. Two of the punks happens to be gay which interjects a level of modernity to the slasher subgenre that some are all too fast to label conservative. Chloe Levine is an absolute star. She emotes more with her giant eyes than most do with their entire bodies. Levine plays Chelsea with a richness that helps the audience grasp her level of damage without painting her as a victim. She is a survivor and in a punk rock fantasy that is about as good as it gets. Jeremy Holm plays a great goofy villain. I am not quite sure if he is going for campy or realism and this indescsion prevented me from ever deciding if this character is really fully developed. There is a bit with some wolf skin and some howling that totally lost me towards the end of the film. That being said if his only job is to create peril for Chelsea he did his job and in that context plays an excellent foil. The only real criticism I have of The Ranger is that it tries to do too much. Chelsea is a survivor. Its coded into every fiber of her being. We do not need the not so subtle imagery especially at the end that reinforces that idea. I wish Wexler would have trusted us a bit more. That being said this is really a small criticism in what is a incredibly fun movie. I think it is clever to interject punk rock into this type of movie. The villain is a white male and our hero a woman. That within itself is not a new take on the slasher genre. The utter absence of the male gaze is however. Wexler allows her hero to be complex. She was a survivor long before the ranger ever started his rampage and the fact that it did not take a man to bring that out is pretty bad ass in its own right. This is not the last we will see and hear of Wexler. We are ready for her to apply the same punk rock sensibility to other subgenres. Do Weird movies next please Jenn!
