Spoilers time tags: 3:04 - 7:30 where we spoil one of the big moments in the movie. On this special Christmas episode, we're incredibly excited to chat with Jenn Wexler and Sean Redlitz, the filmmakers behind the new Christmas horror film The Sacrifice Game, currently streaming on Shudder! It has been a while since we last talked about video games, but some announcements at The Game Awards sparked our interest. (At least on the show.) We also speak about Smile 2 and its imminent release. Plus, how the change from Ryan Gosling to Christopher Abbott in Wolf Man may actually be a good thing.Whether the original French or the Italian spin offs, the Emanuelle franchise holds a special place in the memories of a certain age group. Short on plot, but highly sexual, the films eased the transition into young adulthood. Most would be hard pressed to remember what they were actually about, but they still managed to leave an impression.Emanuelle's Revenge is the latest installment and, unsurprisingly, it has its share of sexy moments. In what will be a surprise to many, the story takes precedence. Highlighting it all are some strong performances, with Beatrice Schiaffino stealing just about every scene she is in at the titular and titillating lead. But do all the pros outweigh the cons? This week's feature presentation is the latest feature from Jenn Wexler. The Sacrifice Game is a holiday horror movie that could have been something special. There are great performances, strong characters, and a fun premise. If only the ending were a little stronger… Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Welcome to GIVE ME THE FEAR - the Britflicks Podcast, Frightfest 2023 preview series. Hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright, these brief, spoiler free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don't teach at film school. After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience (alive or dead, famous or personal to you) for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits. This episode covers WHERE THE DEVIL ROAMS (feat. John Adams, Lulu Adams, Toby Poser & Zelda Adams), PANDEMONIUM (feat. Genre films are a great way to build a fanbase and community. Horror in particular is one of the most successful and loved genres that, much like its villains, never seems to die. It's also where many indie features can thrive and reach an audience without a major studio attached. Today we have the team behind the punk/slasher film, The Ranger, who have done just that. On this edition of Parallax Views, we continue to celebrate Halloween and the spooky season by diving into the world of television horror hosts. The character of the horror host has been a part of pop culture since the days of spook shows and radio, but have become a staple of late night television since the 1950s. Hosts like the buxom Vampira, the beatnik Ghoulardi, "The Cool Ghoul" Zacherley, the unrepentant redneck Joe Bob Briggs, the humorously sexy Elvira, and the currently nationally-syndicated Svengoolie have acted as guides for audiences wanting to embark into the world of the strange, uncanny, and often cheesy. Vampira, one of the earliest television horror hosts Joe Bob Briggs hosting "The Last Drive-In" The alluring Elvira, Mistress of the Dark Long-time host Svengoolie is now nationally-syndicated on MeTV Mr. Lobo and his houseplant sidekick Miss Mittents host strange movies somewhere in "The Void" for the long-running Cinema Insomnia Joining us to discuss the world of horror hosts, and their often unspoken countercultural heritage, is Mr. Lobo of Cinema Insomnia and the streaming service OSI 74 (Outer Space International 74). His motto is, "They're not bad movie, just misunderstood." Alongside hosts like Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder and Svengoolie on MeTV, Mr. Lobo is likely one of the most high-profile horror hosts in America today. In addition to hosting outre movies on Cinema Insomnia for a whopping 18 seasons (and still going!), Mr. Lobo has also made multiple appearances on Coast to Coast AM w/ George Noory, starred as "Criswell" in John Johnston's Plan 9 (a loving homage/reimagining of Ed Wood's notorious Plan 9 from Outer Space), and designed the title animation for Jenn Wexler's inventive 2018 neo-slasher The Ranger. The first feature she produced, Jenn Wexler’s The Ranger, for Glass Eye Pix and Hood River Entertainment, premiered at SXSW and played numerous festivals on an international run before it was released in NYC and LA. Heather’s work as a film analyst and journalist spans over a decade, with bylines in Vulture, Dread Central, and Fangoria. Her background in SFX work includes: Circus of the Dead, Dead Still, and We Are Still Here. She is currently a Blu-Ray special features producer, creating documentaries for Kino Lorber, Lionsgate/Vestron, Arrow Films and Shout Factory releases, including John Carpenter's The Thing, Barton Fink, The Long Riders, Saw 10th Anniversary Reissue, and Army of Darkness. The movie that Heather chose this week is a real doozy - Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Heather talks about how she believes it's one of the most important films ever made. She discusses how this film forces the audience to root for violence. She elaborates on the fact that this movie has no moral center, and how it's the audience's job to gauge morality. And she and April also discuss the controversy this film sparked upon release and why the movie was initially difficult to get a hold of. You can see Heather's work all over the place. Plus, you can watch The Ranger on Shudder. And if you haven't seen Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer yet, be careful. With April Wolfe and Heather Buckley. Chelsea & Rick welcome co-writer & director Jenn Wexler & producer Heather Buckley to talk about their punk rock slasher The Ranger. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Another surprising Shudder exclusive, the film THE RANGER dropped earlier this year. A prototype throwback to the 1980’s slasher films, the movie changes it up a bit with some back story that is not expected in such movies. Actor Jeremy Holm who stars as the title character met members of the Dark Discussions Podcast at New England Scare-A-Con in June. Their interest in the film grew and they decided to take a look at it. When Chelsea and her four friends flee a punk rock party when law enforcement raid it, her boyfriend Garth stabs a police officer. Now on the run, they head to a state park where her family has roots. Unfortunately for them, a local park ranger is there who has other things on his mind. And the results bring back Chelsea’s personal history that she has been running away from since she was a child. Receiving fairly good reviews, the movie was directed by first time director Jenn Wexler. With a strong cast including Chloë Levine, the movie’s real star is Jeremy Holm in a dominating performance that has been drawing positive accolades from both critics and fans alike. But is the film solid? Dark Discussions gives their critique. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
We're hiking through Shudder this week, checking out their exclusive horror film, THE RANGER. Described as a movie similar to Return of the Living Dead, does this indie flick from Jenn Wexler live up to those lofty expectations? Our weekly horror reviews are Abducted in Plain Sight, Mercy Black, Deadpool 2, Black Mirror, The Dead Don't Die, Destroy All Monsters, and Satanic.
WARNING: Tony screwed up and this entire episode was recorded through a laptop mic instead of our fancy audio set up. So... sorry. Deal with it. Gear up Grave Plot faithful, because today we're honoring the fine men and women of our National Parks Service in our first (and likely last) salute to Park Rangers. Listen in to our reviews of Jenn Wexler's The Ranger and Roxanne Benjamin's Body at Brighton Rock. But first things first, and Horror Business comes first. In Real World Horror, we discuss a recent discovery in Nepal that may (or may not) hint at the existence of a long-lived legend. We then move on to news of yet another comedian taking on the horror genre, the re-reboot of a classic franchise, an exciting (maybe?) upcoming video game featuring a familiar character, the diversification of a well-known film festival, and the diversification of a well-known band into film. We've packed all that into our nap sacks along with a heap of our classic irreverent and nonsensical humor that you know you love oh so much. So strap on those hiking boots and come along with us!

The beauty of small theatres is that they act as little pockets of experimentation. They are smaller and more adaptable and willing to try lots of different things to get people in the door. That's why last week Screenland Armour hosted a kick ass free screening of The Ranger directed by Jenn Wexler. A small budget slasher film with a fiesty indepededent spirit was exactly what I needed to start the work week. The Ranger at its core is a movie about a girl whose uncle dies in the woods only to be rescued by a forest ranger. The titular ranger (Jeremy Holm) is not the good guy he seems. Years later Chelsea(Chloe Levine) now a young woman runs with a group of punk rockers. During a raid on a night club they are hanging out in the group shoot a police officer and decide a cabin in the woods is the perfect place to run to. Chelsea leads the group to the cabin her deceased uncle bequeathed her. The ranger recognizing Chelsea begins to come after her and her friends. The Ranger leans into its label as a a punk rock slasher. All of the characters would willingly define themselves by that label. They go to punk rock concerts, they dress punk, and most importantly they have that fuck you mentality we commonly associate with that genre. That being said as we are establishing our main characters the punk rock label is never a mask our characters can hide behind. If they are assholes, they are punk assholes. If they are ditzy and silly than they are ditzy and silly punks. In short punk rock is not a panacea for everyone's personality issues. I appreciate that level of introspection. It gives a fullness to the characters that makes the punkness of the movie feel more like a contribution as opposed to a contrivance. The soundtrack is absolutely bonkers. Comprised mostly of west coast punk the sountrack is a wonderful hodgepodge of new and old. You will find Rotten UK, The Polyester Wags, and The Lobstrosities to name a few on this absolutely killer mix tape. It is clear that the soundtrack was handled with the same loving care the movie was given which is a truly rare thing nowadays. The acting in this movie by the supporting cast is servicable. There is no one stealing scenes from Chelsea or the ranger. They are mostly standins for traditional slasher archtypes only with punk and modern sensibilitites. Two of the punks happens to be gay which interjects a level of modernity to the slasher subgenre that some are all too fast to label conservative. Chloe Levine is an absolute star. She emotes more with her giant eyes than most do with their entire bodies. Levine plays Chelsea with a richness that helps the audience grasp her level of damage without painting her as a victim. She is a survivor and in a punk rock fantasy that is about as good as it gets. Jeremy Holm plays a great goofy villain. I am not quite sure if he is going for campy or realism and this indescsion prevented me from ever deciding if this character is really fully developed. There is a bit with some wolf skin and some howling that totally lost me towards the end of the film. That being said if his only job is to create peril for Chelsea he did his job and in that context plays an excellent foil. The only real criticism I have of The Ranger is that it tries to do too much. Chelsea is a survivor. Its coded into every fiber of her being. We do not need the not so subtle imagery especially at the end that reinforces that idea. I wish Wexler would have trusted us a bit more. That being said this is really a small criticism in what is a incredibly fun movie. I think it is clever to interject punk rock into this type of movie. The villain is a white male and our hero a woman. That within itself is not a new take on the slasher genre. The utter absence of the male gaze is however. Wexler allows her hero to be complex. She was a survivor long before the ranger ever started his rampage and the fact that it did not take a man to bring that out is pretty bad ass in its own right. This is not the last we will see and hear of Wexler. We are ready for her to apply the same punk rock sensibility to other subgenres. Do Weird movies next please Jenn!

Listen as Jenn joins host Heather Wixson to reflect back on her career thus far, including her start at Fearnet, working with Larry Fessenden and other creative filmmakers at Glass Eye Pix, producing some of the most notable independent horror movies of the 2010s, and co-writing and directing her feature-length debut, The Ranger. Heather and Jenn also take an insightful look back at Amy Holden Jones' The Slumber Party Massacre and discuss the feminist aspects of the 1982 horror film. Watcha! Episode 31 sees Liam at The Royal George Pub in Soho talking to director; Jenn Wexler, producer; Heather Buckley and for a short amount of time actor; Chloe Levine. Together they created the award-winning new horror movie - The Ranger. This interview was recorded during the height of London's FrightFest where Jenn was the first female director to open the festival with the film. Having been brought up on punk herself, Jenn's passion for the genre pours out of the movie with a soundtrack that features bands like The Atom Age; The Authorities; Black Lungs; The Avengers; DayGlo Abortions and FANG. Producer, Heather's love for punk is apparent from her first breath in this interview (in a past life Heather was a Fangoria contributor). If punk and horror is your thing, this episode could become your favourite. So what can you expect from this natter? Of course, we talk about the movie as well as the killer punk soundtrack... and reveal what horror movies scared the living bejeezus out of us as a kids as well as what scares us now. Jenn and Heather talk punk and discovery of the sound, and Chloe explains how discovering punk for the first time (having not listened to or experienced a punk show before the movie) has led her to take on the punk-rock attitude into her real life. As well as all that we talk about the need for more women to be seen to be creating movies, the closure of venues and Liam asks "if being dubbed a B-Movie is like being labelled a pop-punk artist?" You can watch the trailer here. If you are based in the US, you can rent and stream the movie via RedBox the rest of us can pick it up on Blu-ray/DVD on Amazon and it will be made available soon on the horror streaming service, Shudder, soon. Playing out the show this week are The Lurchers, they're from Denver, Colorado, where it's always 420. And their track My Own Eyes will be sending you home happy. If you are looking for a badass T-Shirt go pick up the Punks In Pubs Podcast Tee from our Etsy site, all cash raised will go back into the podcast. Go rate and review and tell your friends about the podcast. Punks in Pubs will be having February off so we will be back on the 3rd of March with Tom May of The Menzingers. Until then if you're going to a punk show and you see someone fall down, you pick them right back up. Have a good one, bye bye.
So, what does “Punk Rock Attitude” mean, anyway? There are as many answers to this question as there are punk rockers. Although the connection between heavy metal and horror is well documented, the connection between horror and punk rock isn’t discussed as much. Yet, movies like CLASS OF 1984, and LIQUID SKY, and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, and even RE-ANIMATOR exude a punk rock attitude with a nihilistic brand of humor and irreverence. And now, there's a new punk rock kid in town! THE RANGER (2018) is an homage to slasher films and punk rock movies from the 1980s, and director/co-writer Jenn Wexler joins me to talk about horror, music, fake blood recipes, and becoming a surprise hit at SXSW! Episode 23 sees Andy and Mitch joined by Jenn Wexler, producer for Glass Eye Pix and OF Mickey Keating's Darling and Psychopaths. Jenn is also the director the opening film from Frightfest 2018, The Ranger! Her chosen film? Armageddon! Directed by the Master of Mayhem, Michael Bay, and featuring a gargantuan, and frankly brilliant, cast, Armageddon is the summer blockbuster you love to hate, despite it being the highest grossing film of 1998. Is the hate valid? Is there more to this driller thriller than meets the eye? The synopsis is as follows: When an asteroid threatens to collide with Earth, NASA honcho Dan Truman determines the only way to stop it is to drill into its surface and detonate a nuclear bomb. This leads him to renowned driller Harry Stamper, who agrees to helm the dangerous space mission provided he can bring along his own hotshot crew. Among them is the cocksure A.J., who Harry thinks isn't good enough for his daughter, until the mission proves otherwise. Please note that this podcast contains strong language and Scottish accents.
