Night of the Living Dead (1968)   Directed by George Romero and starring Duane Johnson and Judith O’Dea, would give rise to the independent horror.  The film was made for $110,000 and shot outside of Philadephia.  The film would gross $30million upon its release.  A cult classic today and highly regarded as one of the best horror films of all time, upon its initial release, the critics were less than favourable.     Return of the Living Dead (1985)   The 1985 American comedy horror film written and directed by Dan O’Bannon and starring Clu Gulagar, Thom Matthews and Linnea Quigley.  The film is the first film that would introduce some Zombie tropes such as fast moving, able to talk and the hunger for brains.  The soundtrack which includes bands such as The Cramps, The Damned, The Flesh Eaters and SSQ is considered one of the best post punk soundtracks of all times.   We are joined by Shanta Pasika, host of the series Hexane Arcane, author Matthew Brockmeyer and writer and producer Joe Randazzo.    Opening Credits/Introduction (.52); Man Messes With Nature (1726); Night of the Living Dead (1968) Trailer (19.01); Why God?

The documentary, released in 2019, explores the origins of Ridley Scott's Alien and his works on the Alien franchise. The documentary includes original story notes, rejected designs and storyboards, exclusive behind the scenes footage and screenwriter Dan O'Bannon's original 29 page script of Memory, which was the starting point for the Alien film script. The documentary takes us on the path in the lead up and the making of the Alien film and explores the talents of screenwriter Dan O'Bannon, Film Director Ridley Scott and Visionary Artist H.R Giger, and their once in a lifetime collaboration that made Alien one of the best science fiction horror films and franchises of all time. Lookout for H.P Lovecraft, Francis Bacon, the Greek Furies and producer Walter Hill, the film's producer that decided to pass on directing Alien, in favour of the film Southern Comfort, which a solid film, but is no Alien. So sit back, relax and enjoy the episode, brought to be Stan who are streaming the doco at the moment, and let's not forget JB HI FI as well......just kidding! Dark Star - released theatrically in 1975 - is the earliest of master filmmaker John Carpenter’s work. It started as a film school project on a budget of $1000, and then $6000 and then $60,000. Buried within this overzealous endeavor was an interesting concept about investigating the nature of reality, was is knowable what is tangible and how can we actually know what is real if the only thing we can really rely upon is our sensory data. Unfortunately what would have been a great high concept for a cerebral science fiction short film or twilight zone episode was padded out to theatrical length with horrible comedy, a beach ball alien (literally a beach ball) and a malfunctioning talking bomb with a personality that comes to believe it is God and kills them all. While this film lacks a plot, action, drama, good character interaction, sense of direction, comedy, a likeable character or any sense of story, the film making chops of the future legend are evident and co-writer Dan O’Bannon learned from his mistakes to bring us Alien. This one is a cult classic that while not horribly bad like other movies is about as exciting as watching grass grow. Carpenter and O'Bannon did what all creators do and learned from their shortcomings in this one and built on their success, but to be truthful there was no where to go but up from this one. Dark Star, 1974, its….something. Sci-Fi Malady RSS

Rest In Peace to Dan O'Bannon for being the brains (pun intended) of this here operation on screen... Without him, this horror comedy zombie epic wouldn't have been possible. So of course I had to talk everyone's heads off about one of my top 5 zombie movies ever made, all while being harmless and keeping your own brains intact. I didn't nerd out as much as I did with NOTLD, but I enjoyed this, and hope you listeners do the same.

Memory: The Origins of Alien premiered at Fantastic Fest 2019 from director Alexandre Philippe, known for 78/52. In Memory, Philippe explores the origins of one science fiction's most iconic films, Ridley Scott's Alien. But, this isn't just a production history, instead he discusses the myths and culture that formed the story of the film and how it could have only happened with the trio of Dan O'Bannon, H.R. Giger, and Ridley Scott. Beyond this, Philipped maps the history of the iconic "chestburster" scene, where it came from and how it was made. I was lucky enough to get to speak with Philippe at the festival and discuss why he chose the "Chestburster" scene, the role that myth plays in film, what sparked him to include some of the more emotional moments with his interviewees, and why making the film accessible to non-fans was important.

In space... no one can hear anything but my annoying nasally voice yelling at my wife and best friend about how much I love Alien! Written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, the film was O'Bannon's reintroduction to Hollywood after living in a think-tank on the ill-fated Jodorowsky's Dune. The time abroad served invaluable, as it introduced him to H.R. Giger and his hideously sexual brooding art that would take an admittedly lacking story and turn it into a classic with the help of director, Ridley Scott.  Hot off the moderate success of The Duelists, Scott decided to leave the Napoleonic era long in the past, delving into a gritty, industrial future.  Between Giger and O'Bannon (who did set design for Dark Star and Star Wars) the film has an unmistakable aesthetic, which was captured perfectly by Scott, much to the chagrin of some of his actors. For instance, Tom Skerritt, was openly critical of Scott taking so long to set up shots, because he fell out of character.  The film stars Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley. Aside from a part in Madman (which you can see was later aggrandized after the success of Alien) Weaver was predominantly a theater actor. She would go on to make more than the budget of this entire film to appear in the sequel: Aliens. She would go on to star in four installments of this series, which has grossed over $1,000,000,000 in her lifetime.  Listen as we discuss the practical effects, such as the design of the Nostromo and the Space Jockey, and the ingenuity of using real animal parts in the facehugger's eggsack. Did you know that they used condoms in making the xenomorph? Well don't worry, because Jake mentions it like 10 times throughout this episode. We also discuss some of the deleted scenes and the infamous alternate ending that was luckily scrapped.  If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Precinct 13: The Movies and Music of John Carpenter

It's the movie that started it all! On the premiere episode of Precinct 13, hosts Chris Oliphant and Nick Rocco Scalia kick off their film-by-film discussion of John Carpenter's body of work with 1974's Dark Star. Made in collaboration with Dan O'Bannon, Carpenter's USC classmate who would go on to co-create the Alien franchise, this sci-fi comedy began its life as a student film and became Carpenter's first theatrically-released feature. With some still-impressive low-budget production design and visual effects, a cast of colorful characters, and a deep roster of young creative talent bringing it all to life, Dark Star is both a fascinating film and a critical step in Carpenter's evolution. Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. In this episode we’re talking about two of the greatest back to back franchise entries of all time: 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by talking about what we’ve seen or done lately in the field of horror. Liam talks about an upcoming screening of Knife + Heart at the Steel Stacks in Bethlehem and our recent screening of Al White’s Starfish in Philadelphia, and Justin talks about seeing A Hole In The Ground, the trailers for Midsommar and The Dead Don’t Die, and attending the recent New Jersey Horror Convention. We also talk about Jordan Peele’s recent film Us. We begin by talking about Alien. We begin by giving a background on the creators of the film, including Dan O’Bannon and H.R. Giger. We discuss Giger’s influence on the film, and how his surreal and sexual style of art shaped the perception and themes of the film. The myriad sexual themes of the film are discussed, including an interpretation of a fear of sex, a fear of penetration, a male fear of rape, a male fear of birth, and a fear of the feminine. We briefly touch upon how O’Bannon solved Lovecraft’s “monster problem” by presenting us with a very unique and very well defined monster. The films idea of the ignorance and myopic nature of humanity’s universal view is discussed. The film’s place in the broader genre of “body horror” is touched upon. The various socialist themes of the film are discussed, in that the movie is an examination of the working class of this universe. The critiques of capitalism that the movie presents, in that the villains of the movie are not only the xenomorph but also the faceless and nameless corporation that forces the workers into dangers for the sake of profit. The exploitation of workers is also discussed. The “used future” aesthetic of the film is discussed. The film as a critique of imperialism and colonialism is discussed. The films success in creating empathy for all its characters is discussed. The deaths of several of the characters, and how effective and upsetting they still are, are touched upon. Finally, we briefly discuss our personal experiences with the film. Next up is 1986’s Aliens. We open up by briefly talking about our favorite James Cameron films, and move on to give a brief background of the film. The film’s continuation of some of the themes present in the first film is touched upon, including corporate greed and the military industrial complex. Liam argues that the film actually softens the criticism present in the first film, as this film actually gives a human face to the corporation, which may or may not absolve the actual corporation of any responsibility. The film as a criticism of American involvement in Vietnam is discussed at length. We discuss the differences between the theatrical cut and the TV/directors cut, and how the director’s cut and the additions it has over the theatrical cut make the film both more tragic and more horrifying. The criticism of the film as anti-feminist because of the addition of Ripley being a mother is discussed, as is the confusing nature of the scene where Ripley attacks the Queen’s nest after rescuing Newt. Ripley’s role as the reasonable and rational character in a male dominated film is touched upon. Some of the technical aspects of the film are briefly touched upon,
