AKA Omen Trilogy Retrospective #2 Back in 2023, Dan, Stella, Ian and Howard recorded a chat about 1978's Satanic sequel Damian: Omen II to follow up their chat on 1976's The Omen. Ghosts (or demons) got into the machine, however, and caused most of the recording to be lost. In January 2025, though, Dan sat down with friend of the podcast Steve Timms to get a fresh perspective on the film, while including some of the surviving comments from the rest of the team. Will Dan and Steve agree with Howard that this example from the first golden age of the Hollywood sequel (released in the same year as Jaws 2 and the year before Rocky II) is a roaring romp, or with Ian that it's dull and deeply unmemorable? APOLOGIES: Lots of us call it "The Omen II" when it's actually called Damien: Omen II. We know. MORE APOLOGIES: Sorry for our first new episode of 2025 coming out in February rather than, as first announced, January. This Halloween season, we're taking a spooky detour from the familiar slasher formula to explore two unique horror films that embrace the darker side of the holiday. We'll be comparing Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) and Terrifier 2 (2022). Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, Halloween III is a standalone film that departs from the Michael Myers saga. The story follows a small-town doctor who uncovers a sinister plot involving a mysterious toy company and a deadly ritual. This film is known for its unique blend of horror and science fiction, and its eerie exploration of Halloween traditions. Terrifier 2 (2022) Directed by Damien Leone, Terrifier 2 is a gory and disturbing slasher film that follows the return of the iconic horror villain, Art the Clown. This film is praised for its intense violence, practical effects, and its ability to shock and disturb audiences. Join us as we dissect these two unconventional horror films and discuss their impact on the genre. Spoilers start around 6:38.
This week Levi and special guests Caleb and Luke consider the odd man out in the Halloween franchise, Halloween III.

Woody Allen?! Warum? Heute bei Murder/Kill/Antes!

What The Riff?!? makes another scary trip down the Halloween rabbit hole with these theme songs, movie and TV music, and rock songs with a bent towards the macabre. We hope you enjoy this third edition of "Halloween" from What the Riff?!? Highway to Hell by AC/DC The opening track to the 1979 album of the same name features Bon Scott on his last album as lead singer of the group before his untimely death. The name of the song was inspired by the group's gruesome touring schedule.Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue The Crue's 1983 breakthrough album of the same name would establish them as one of the most successful metal bands of the 80's. The song was controversial, with many believing that it encouraged devil worship, though the lyrics themselves do not explicitly do so.Disarm by The Smashing Pumpkins Off their breakout album "Siamese Dream," this song references "the killer in me is the killer in you" is inspired by Billy Corgan's contemplation of his negligent parents and suicide. The lyrics "cut that little child" caused the song to be banned by the BBC.Demons by Imagine Dragons This song off Imagine Dragons' major label debut studio album became their second top 10 single. It is really not about demons in the Halloween sense, but more the tragedies of life like abuse, PTSD, and mental illness.Voodoo by Godsmack The third single from Godsmack's self-titled debut album was inspired by Wes Craven's film “The Serpent and the Rainbow.” This song became Dave Bautista's theme song as Leviathan when he was in the WWE. Mommy's Little Monster by Social Distortion The title track from Social Distortion's debut album tells a horror tale of a kid becoming a punk rocker. It is another song about dealing with personal demons rather than the supernatural. Witch Wolf by Styx Early in their career Styx put out this song to lead off their third album, “The Serpent is Rising.” James Young takes lead vocal duties on this song that tells about a person accursed by a creature called the witch wolf, and night rider.Dragula by Rob Zombie The lead single from Rob Zombie's debut album may be his biggest hit. The audio clip at the beginning of the song is taken from the 1960 horror film “The City of the Dead.” The name comes from the TV sitcom "The Munsters," where Grandpa Munster has a dragster called "Drag-u-la."The theme to the TV series "Twilight Zone" This menagerie of bizarre tales from the early days of TV still has staying power in our sci-fi culture. Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones Mick Jagger walks us through a discussion with Old Scratch himself in this well-known classic from the Stones' catalogue. The idea is a narrative from Satan's point of view as he reviews historical events. That Old Black Magic by Frank Sinatra Old Blue Eyes gave us this romantic song with a Halloween bent. It was a jazz classic originally written in 1942 with lyrics penned by Johnny Mercer. Love is "that old black magic" in this tune.Night of the Vampire by Roky Erickson From this cult classic album "The Evil One," this song is one of a plethora of horror-oriented tracks on the album. Erickson spent a significant amount of time in mental institutions. The Kill (Bury Me) by Thirty Seconds to Mars Jared Leto, front man for the group (and perhaps better known as an actor today), has said this song is about the relationship you have with yourself, and confronting the dark side of who you are.Take Me to Church by Hozier This haunting hit song compares falling in love with a kind of death, and compares the lover to a kind of religion. Today Matt and Todd are joined by Mike McCarty to discuss a favorite from 1968. Quatermass and the Pit, (or, if you have the time, watch Five Million Years to Earth the USA title). Quatermass and the Pit (1968) stars: James Donald, Andrew Keir (as Quatermass), Barbara Shelley, and Julian Glover. Directed by Roy Ward Baker. Written by the legend of British Science Fiction: Nigel Kneale, Quatermass and the Pit takes you to a deep pit, excavated in the underground of a London Building. What is found within begins to warp the minds of all around it, causing fear and chaos. Quatermass and the Pit will be enjoyed by fans of Dr. Who, or movies like Halloween III, Prince of Darkness and Pandorum. This is a classic blend of sci-fi and horror. Already well-known by Mike and Matt, this was a first-watch for Todd and an instant classic. This is a great time, check it out. We couldn't find this streaming anywhere in the US, but the fantastic Blu Ray is available and alive with 60s London Nostalgia, I thought it was a nice clean print.

Also a Carpenter double feature of sorts, one from the director himself, and one continuing from his iconic Halloween (1978) film as he intended the franchise to be, an anthology. The Fog is a true American ghost story wrestling with monstrous crimes of our past, and Halloween III is an outrageous gorefest with one of the most infamously ludicrous plots in all horror cinema. Tom Atkins plays an everyman sex symbol in both, laying pipe as he's terrorized by ghosts & robots through anonymous northern California towns. Note: Will promised we'd timestamp the Tom Atkins Ass Shot in the description. I do not have time to do that this evening. Sorry.
Spook Retorts is back! And this year Danielle is starting us off with the venerable Halloween franchise with the third installment from 1982: Season of the Witch. If you love Michael Myers and the deep lore of the Halloween movies, then you're going to have very ambivalent feelings about Halloween III, which is the first (and last) of John Carpenter's planned anthology series of Halloween movies. When an elderly toy maker is able to escape murder thanks to a well placed block of concrete on a chain, he stumbles into a hospital clutching a Halloween mask and raving about a disaster. When the old man is successfully murdered just a little while later, Dr. Dan and the man's daughter Ellie are on the case! Why not the police, you ask? Well, so did we, and we received no answers. Anyway, their investigation leads them to the company town of the Silver Shamrock company, the manufacturer of the Halloween masks. Not only are Silver Shamrock selling the masks, they are absolutely blanketing airwaves with catchy commercials for their masks that literally counts down the days until Halloween. And what are these fabulous, amazing masks? A witch, a pumpkin, and a skeleton. Wow, so original. However, not everything is as it seems, as nine months earlier one of the bluestones was stolen from Stonehenge in an unbelievable heist that would have a made a much better movie. Clearly, some nefarious and mystical mayhem is afoot, and it all culminates in making Sam super angry about a plan that seems utterly pointless, and the unfortunate dearth of witches despite the promise of the movie's title.
Jim discusses the one film in the "Halloween" franchise that does not include Michael Myers - 1982's "Halloween III: Season of the Witch," starring Tom Atkins, Stacy Nelkin, Dan O'Herlihy, Michael Currie, Ralph Strait Jadeen Barbor, Brad Schacter, Garn Stephens, Jonathan Terry, Nancy Keyes, Al Berry, Wendy Wassberg, Essex Smith, and Madie Norman. In the small town of Santa Mira, there are strange going-ons leading an E.R. doctor and the daughter of a missing man to make a horrifying discovery. With the third Halloween movie, John Carpenter — a favorite director of the podcast — wanted to take the franchise in a different direction, in which every year a new entry would be released that told a stand-alone story rather than just repeating the Michael Meyers thing.Turned out the public wasn't interested in Halloween without Michael, so the film wasn't a success. But as always happens with Carpenter, it gained a cult following over time, and we dive into to see if it turns out to be Worth Watching! This is a public episode. This episode originally aired October 31st, 2020. John Carpenter is often referred to as the master of horror. His iconic Halloween franchise defined the slasher film formula for decades to come. But for fans of synthwave music (and the use of synth in cinema), we have Carpenter to thank for that as well. His extremely effective use of synths to build atmosphere and heighten tension in his films went on to influence countless synthwave artists and film composers. On this Halloween bonus episode of No Filler, we listen to a couple tracks from his 1982 score for Halloween III, and talk about his legacy in both film and music. Tracklist: "The Fog Theme" "Chariots of Pumpkins" (Halloween III) "Local Boy, No Way" (Halloween III) "The Upside Down" (Stranger Things) "Halloween Theme" This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. Last year we did a video where we tried to figure out what the best Halloween II was. This year we're back trying to decide what is the WORST Halloween III. The movies being discussed are "Halloween III: Season of the Witch" which was the 3rd film in the franchises and Halloween 4, H20, and Kills which are all considered part 3 in the Michael Myers story. Which one will we decide on? That's how Dick Ebert summed up the infamous bait-and-switch horror classic "Halloween III: Season of The Witch," a movie that taught us what happens when you take the slasher out of a slasher series. Rob in Colchester commissioned this 1982 film, recorded a jingle for it and shared his mind-blowing theories on why a super-hot, grieving daughter would bang an alcoholic doctor, why TV stations would take orders from that doctor and why killer androids let him live. In this episode, Gene learns about Mr. Beast and immediate hates him. Big D teaches us how to punch dolphins, and Ash wonders what Irishness has to do with the Halloween franchise. The Shat Crew also praises the realness of Halloween III's black characters, suggests casting Jeff Goldblum instead of Tom Atkins and explores the drop-off in kids watching TV.
