We conclude this week's devotion by looking at Jonah's anger over God's compassion on the Ninevites

God loves sinners of all kinds and He desires for them to be saved
Understanding the Old Testament Part 20 (1 Sam 2:1–8; 2 Chron 33:1-16) Understanding God's compassion is vital for living an authentic Christian life. It shines most brightly in the N.T. in Jesus, but there are some remarkable stories in the Old, demonstrating that God does not change. Many of us have trouble receiving this compassion and grace, which makes it hard for us to show it to others, and to experience joy ourselves.
God is closer than you think ... and more interested in you than you can imagine.
How could God not forsake the church and all mankind for how evil and wicked we’ve all become? The returning exiles prayer of confession reminds us that God is compassionate and He is faithful to His promise to save. We today have a better covenant God has secured through Jesus who was forsaken for our salvation.

Scriptures: Isaiah 54:1-10, 11-17; Isaiah 55:1-13 Teaching session by Sr. Pastor Ronald McFarlane and Pastor Orlando McFarlane. Lesson was adopted from the Evangelical Sunday School Lesson Commentary for 2020-2021.
In this Sunday school lesson we learned about God's compassion for his people. Come join us as evangelist Tanner teaches and leads the discussion.
God purposefully picked Gideon to fight this war because he wanted to prove something to Israel then and us now God chooses to work with some of the most unqualified people to achieve miraculous outcomes Gideon is an exceptional case of this - tremendous level of fear Remember Gideon's complaint to God…
We associate the womb with something feminine. After all, only females are capable of birthing a human being. God uses the root word, womb, to describe the tender affection he has for us. The womb is the safest place for the growing human. It is designed to protect us, cradle us, and keep us closest to the being we're imaging. The womb is a type of earth, ark, and church. It is like a greenhouse, protective from external damaging forces, designed for creating a thriving environment in a harsh world. Exodus 34:6 (NIV) "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness…" Rachum - full of compassion - a word mostly attributed to God in the new and old testaments. A type of compassion only God is capable of demonstrating. The noun, verb, and adjective form of this word are all related to the Hebrew word for womb, rekhem. This image, in context, draws out the nurturing nature of God. God shows tender affection - He makes known to us how much He cherishes and soothes us in a gentle emotion of the mind. This is the peace of God offered through Jesus, as we will see in today's lesson. A heartfelt thanks to Tim, Carissa, and Jon from The Bible Project for inspiring this lesson and series. After diving into Paul's testimony a little in the last episode, we see here that God cares deeply about Paul and about each of us. Even though Paul was working directly against God and killing Christians, God decided to save Paul and give him a new life mission. God cares that much and more for each of us, that even in our sin, He sees the best and has a mission He's calling us to.
Have you ever ran away from responsibility? God commissioned Jonah to call out against the city of Nineveh warning them of a coming disaster. Jonah could not escape God's presence. This message draws from the book of Jonah recognizing the need for compassion from the faithful as God has compassion on all people. God's compassion calls for repentance.

Fr Chris Findley Sermon for the Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost titled 'God's Compassion for a Crazy World' on Sept 20, 2020.
While obviously preferring obedience, there are times when parents allow their children to experience the consequences of their disobedience. So it is with God and his children. He has been clear in his parental instruction, inviting us to enjoy the abundant life he offers and warning us against activities that will rob us of it. And when we disobey—and we do disobey, don’t we?—there are times he wisely and lovingly allows us to experience the consequences of our disobedience. As we begin our study of the book of Jonah, we find an example of just that. Jonah disobeys the Lord and is then allowed to experience the consequences of that rebellion. So, this prophet ends up serving as a negative example to us and a reminder as to what’s at stake when God calls you and I to obey his voice. Key Passage: Jonah 1:1–17 Speaker: Josiah Boyd

In part 2 of Doran Morford’s 3 part study of the book of Jonah, the third chapter is explored. This time, Jonah listens to God and does what he commands. When Jonah tells the people of Nineveh that their city will be destroyed, they repent, which is exactly what God wanted. Doran helps us to understand why exactly God did this.

Anger is hard to hide! God is saying "Do you have a right to be angry because I forgive people who repent?" Are we pouting because God didn't do what we thought He should have done? We must trust the Holy Spirit to safeguard our hearts against evil spirits seeking to gain dominion. Our Anger and God's Compassion - your choice!

Over the past few weeks and even days, the world has changed rapidly. As we come to grips with the effects of a global pandemic, it can be easy to allow fear or anxiety to creep in. But in times like these, it’s important to remind ourselves of the sovereignty of our God who rules over everything, including the coronavirus. This week on the podcast, Crystal Keating is sitting down with Joni Eareckson Tada (with appropriate social distancing, of course!) to put our focus on our God who remains the same – steadfast and trustworthy – regardless of what is happening in the world around us. Listen as Joni shares where she is directing her thoughts and finding peace, and the practical ways that you can show God’s love and care to people in your community.Hear more from Joni: www.joniandfriends.org/a-calming-word-during-the-coronavirusFind all resources mentioned on the podcast at www.joniandfriends.org/podcastQuestions or prayer requests? Whenever there is a widespread crisis, people feel that their lives are out of their control. This is understandable. In such a crisis, Christians bear the tangible message of the God who is ultimately in control, who loves lost people, and who compassionately ministers to them. Compassion can't be seen if Christians lock ourselves in our houses.
