I was reading some people's comments this week about their “no need to go church” attitudes and beliefs. Some were saying that they do not have to go to a church to be a Christian. True! One person said that he could worship God in places other than at a church. True! Another said that it was the same old same old every week. Unfortunately too true! There were many but the saddest was the person who said that they just didn't get anything out of it any more. True for them! The truth of the matter for when we make the effort to meet with others at a public church service is that it is more about what we give to God than what we are expecting Him to give to us. Solomon points out to us in Ecclesiastes 5:17 some “pre New Testament Church” attitudes to develop and maintain when we come before God, wherever we are.

Imagine the childhood conversation between two young boys: “My dad is bigger than your dad.” “No, my dad is bigger than yours.” “Uh uh, mine could beat yours in a fight!” Not ever – my dad could beat yours into the ground!” And on and on it goes, of course! I wish I could say this was only an imaginary disagreement. Still, I remember arguing with one of my childhood friends in first or second grade. Having the biggest, strongest, or toughest dad was a big deal to two little boys! No matter the age, we may often find comfort in knowing that whatever is “ours” (Dad, mom, car, etc.) is bigger, better, faster, or more powerful than another. This even applies to peoples' ideas of faith, religion, and even ‘gods.' After the angel had appeared to Mary and told her of God's plan to use her to bring about the birth of Jesus, she made a several-day journey to see her friend and distant relative, Elizabeth, who at the time was pregnant with her son, who would grow to become John the Baptist. They hugged and kissed, and after talking for a moment, Elizabeth was moved to rejoice in the precious child, the coming Messiah, carried in Mary's swollen form. Mary responded in what has come to be called the ‘Magnificat,' a beautiful collection of Old Testament prophecies regarding The Coming One, to be applied to Jesus. In this poem of hers, Mary spoke of the power of God: “For the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His name.” A couple of lines later, she said, “He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart.” Still, later she stated, “He has filled the Hungry with good things; and sent away the rich empty-handed.” She was bragging about her God! ‘He was mighty; He had done great things; conquered the proud and evil, and fed the Hungry.' In other words, her God, the One God, was greater than all others! We who follow Jesus understand this! We don't just believe our God is big and powerful, more than any other – we believe He is The One True God, the one and only God, who is over all! More than 2000 years ago, two young women gathered and rejoiced in the power and glory of the One God. He was gracious and good and would punish evil, care for the downtrodden and give mercy and grace to all who came to Him. Let us join these two women in our worship of the One God and give thanks this Christmas season for his great gift of new life in his son Jesus, who is The Christ. This week we are in Chapter 9 and look at a prayer that Daniel prays that shows clearly how he viewed God, vs how he viewed himself/the people of God. Fortunately, Daniel also predicts the coming of Jesus that would bridge the gap between the great and awesome God and us! (Daniel 9:1-19)

Jeremiah 9:23-24 God has gone through great lengths so that you can get to know Him and to understand who He is! There are two types of ways God has revealed Himself and made it possible for you to know Him; one way is known as “general revelation” and the other way is known as “special revelation.” General revelation doesn't give you all the information needed to know God; it is simply enough information provided given to everyone for the The post “Our God is Awesome” appeared first on Meadowbrooke Church.

In this episode I invite Jenny Stofka to speak about Consecrated Life in Miles Christi. She shares her experience in college, and how she felt called to consecrate her life to Jesus Christ through the vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. I also welcome Kristina, who recently graduated from Florida International University and is now a nurse in Tampa, Florida. She asks some interesting questions about discernment and Religious Life—questions I'm sure you'll be interested in knowing the answer to. I share how the Catechism says, in #944 that Consecrated Life "is characterized by the public profession of the evangelical counsels of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience, in a stable state of life recognized by the Church". So, while through BAPTISM all the Christian faithful are called to holiness and—in a sense—consecrated to Jesus Christ, through the Religious Vows, we add a special commitment, a PUBLIC commitment to seek out the perfection of those promises made in Baptism. Those who consecrate their lives commit to live out the “Evangelical Counsels” of Christ in their life, becoming a WITNESS to the Gospel in the world. The Church says that Religious and Consecrated Life is "a stable form of living by which the faithful, following Christ more closely (…), are totally dedicated to God who is loved most of all, so that, having been dedicated [themselves] by a new and special title to his honor, to the building up of the Church, and to the salvation of the world, they strive for the perfection of charity [that is, holiness]." Code of Canon Law, #573 - - - - - - - - - - Fr. Patrick Wainwright is a priest of Miles Christi, a Catholic Religious Order. - To ask me or Jenny any question about the Consecrated Women in Miles Christi, please email me at info@forcollegecatholics.org - Miles Christi Religious Order website: https://www.mileschristi.org - This Podcast's Website: https://www.forcollegecatholics.org - To learn about the Spiritual Exercises (silent weekend retreat), visit: https://www.mileschristi.org/spiritual-exercises/ - Recorded at our Family Center in South Lyon, Michigan. - Intro music from pond5.com
