https://wels2.blob.core.windows.net/family-devotions/20251219fam.mp3 Listen to Devotion While John was in prison, he heard about the things Christ was doing. He sent two of his disciples to ask him, “Are you the Coming One or should we wait for someone else?” Jesus answered them, “Go, report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the gospel is preached to the poor. Blessed is the one who does not take offense at me.” As these two were leaving, Jesus began to talk to the crowds about John. “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? What did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? No, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. So what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you! And he is much more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' Amen I tell you: Among those born of women there has not appeared anyone greater than John the Baptist. Yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Matthew 11:2-11 (EHV) Are You the Coming One? In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. There's a famous children's book called Are You My Mother? Maybe you've read it! It's about a baby bird who hatches while his mom is gone. So, he climbs out of the nest and starts asking all kinds of animals and even machines, “Are you my mother?” But they all say, “No!” Finally, the baby bird gets lifted back into his nest, and his real mother comes home. They are happy together again! We aren't baby birds, and John the Baptist wasn't either. But John was looking for someone—the Coming One, the Savior God promised. But here's the strange part: John the Baptist already knew Jesus! He even baptized Jesus. He heard God's voice say, “This is my Son, whom I love.” He saw the Holy Spirit come down like a dove. So why would John ask Jesus, “Are you the Coming One?” Maybe John wasn't doubting, maybe he was just tired of waiting. He was stuck in prison and probably wished Jesus would save him right away. Or maybe John wanted his followers to learn the truth themselves by going to Jesus and asking. Whatever the reason, we know what happened: John sent two of his helpers to Jesus to ask, “Are you the Coming One?” And Jesus didn't just say, “Yes.” Instead, he told them to look at what he was doing—making blind people see, deaf people hear, lame people walk and telling the good news to the poor. All those miracles matched the promises in the Bible. So the answer was clear: Jesus IS the Coming One! John's job was always to point people to Jesus. He wanted everyone to know the Savior. We can do that too. Many people still wonder, “Who is Jesus?” With our lives, words, and church family, we can point to Jesus—the One who came to save us, forgive us, and lead us to eternal life. Prayer: Jesus, you are the Coming One whom God promised. You help us see the truth, walk in faith, and one day you will raise us to live with you forever. Make our faith stronger and help us share the good news with others—at Christmas and all year long. Amen. The questions below are to help families discuss this devotion. The questions are divided by age group as suggestions, but anyone could reflect on any of the questions as they desire. Questions for Younger Children Who did John the Baptist send to Jesus to talk to him? (His disciples.) What question did they ask Jesus? (“Are you the Coming One?”) Questions for Elementary Age Children How can our church do the same kind of work John the Baptist did? (By pointing people to Jesus, teaching about him, sharing God's Word.) Name a few miracles Jesus did that showed he is the Savior—the Coming One. (Helping blind people see, lame people walk, sick people get better, calming storms, feeding crowds.) Questions for Middle School and Above Why didn't Jesus just say, “Yes, I am the Coming One”? Why did he answer the way he did? (He wanted them to see the proof—his miracles matched God's promises.) How did John the Baptist prepare the hearts of people for Jesus' arrival? (He told them to repent, be baptized, and look for the Savior.) Download Family Devotions Family Devotions are brought to you by WELS Discipleship. John the Baptist had heralded Jesus as the Lamb of God, the Coming One, and the Messiah. John had pointed to the Advent of the Christ. But in our reading on this third Sunday of Advent, we see John in a much different setting. You have to wonder if John, who was now sitting in a dungeon, had begun to think he might have made one of the biggest mistakes in history. And you can also imagine that he had a great need to know that the person he'd been prophesying about was the real thing. Join Pastor Chris as he compares Blind Bartimaeus and John the Baptist in their encounter with joy in this sermon for Gaudete Sunday. The Question of Hope Matthew 11:2–11 In this third week of Christmas Through Matthew's Eyes, we encounter one of the most honest moments in Scripture: John the Baptist, faithful and courageous, now imprisoned and questioning. From a dark cell, John sends word to Jesus asking, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” This sermon explores how doubt can arise even in the hearts of the faithful when circumstances don't match expectations. Jesus' response to John is neither condemnation nor dismissal, but grace and evidence—pointing to the works He is doing in fulfillment of God's promises. We are reminded that doubt does not disqualify us from faith, and that Jesus meets honest questions with compassion. As the message unfolds, we see that God affirms His people even in seasons of struggle, defining us not by our doubts but by His grace. In the midst of suffering, waiting, and unanswered questions, this passage calls us to hold on to hope and trust that Christ has not forgotten us. This Christmas message invites those who are weary, questioning, or discouraged to bring their doubts to Jesus and rest in the assurance that He is indeed the Coming One.

Saturday, 21 June 2025   and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” Matthew 11:3   “...they said to Him, ‘You, You are ‘the coming,' or do another we anticipate?” (CG).   In the previous verse, it noted that John the Baptist had heard about Jesus' works in prison and sent two of his disciples. Now, it notes that “they said to Him, “You, You are ‘the Coming?'”   One can see the emphatic nature of his question, directly speaking to Jesus with the pronoun su, You, followed by the verb which repeats the thought, You are. John's question about “the Coming” suggests nothing other than the anticipated Messiah. However, it is debated what he is referring to. Several general suggestions are –   * His faith is failing, and he is wondering if his original thoughts concerning Jesus were incorrect. * He has heard of the works of Jesus and is not sure if this is the same Person he baptized. * His disciples need to know that He is the Messiah, and so he sent them to confirm to them that this is the One. * He is trying to spur Jesus to make his proclamation that He is, in fact, the Messiah.   Proponents of these, and various other scenarios, state their reasons for their view. As for John's words, they continue with, “or do another we anticipate?”   The word prosdokaó, to anticipate, is introduced. This anticipation can be in thought, in waiting, in hope, in fear, etc. It is derived from pros, to or toward, and dokeuo, to watch. It is as if someone is leaning forward intently, watching for their anticipation to arrive or materialize. What John asks about concerning this anticipation is “another.”   Here he uses the word héteros, another, but of a distinct kind. The word állos, another of the same kind, is not used. John has heard of the works of the Christ. Hearing of them, he is now confused. The works of Jesus have been clearly presented to him, something Jesus will confirm in His response to John. Jesus' response will imply that He knows John is already aware of those things.   Therefore, John is not questioning his faith in Jesus. He would know full well that this is the same Person he baptized. His disciples also already know He is the proclaimed Messiah. John could have saved them the effort and just reminded them of this.   This is especially so because John 1 records that two of John's disciples heard his words and followed Jesus. The fact was already known and established. There is no reason to assume that John is trying to spur Jesus to proclaim that He is the Messiah. If that were so, Jesus would have responded as He did with His mother, saying that His hour had not yet come.   The use of “the Christ” in the previous verse could have been substituted with “Jesus.” If that were the case, one could assume John was questioning Jesus as the Christ. The use of the word heteros, another of a different kind, is telling us that John is thinking of another Person who will come to do other types of things for Israel, including securing his release from prison as Isaiah prophesied.   John is turning inward just as Elijah and Jeremiah did. He has temporarily misunderstood that God's plans may not include his personal comfort or happiness, and he is wondering if someone else would be coming to fulfill the prophecies that Jesus is clearly leaving unfulfilled. Jesus' response to his petition will confirm this.   Life application: How often do we hear of people prophesying healing, financial breakthrough, the date of the rapture, and so forth? These utterances are complete fabrications without any biblical support for their words. And yet, these are the most popular types of promises, and those who make them generally will have many followers.   Even when their words don't come true, they will just make up more promises and keep stringing people along. Why does this happen? The answer is that people want to be reassured that their suffering will end. They want to be reassured that their financial woes will be remedied. They want release from the pains, trials, and demands of this life and so they listen to rapture predictors who will give them words of exit into eternal bliss.   This is the human condition. It is not limited to Christianity. This is why there are astrologists, horoscope teachers, palm readers, and ear ticklers in any religion around the world. People want something to meet their expectations, and so they will go to any length to obtain words that will provide an acceptable answer to what they seek.   The Bible does not tell us when the rapture will happen. The Bible does not tell us that we can be healed of afflictions by a call from the pulpit. If you want to get out of your financial woes and alleviate your hunger, the Bible tells you to be industrious and work for it (see 2 Thessalonians 3:10 and spend time in the Proverbs).   God does not promise you a life of ease while here on earth. In fact, we can expect the opposite (John 16:33, etc.). God promises us forgiveness of sins and eternal fellowship with Him when we call on Jesus. Until we are brought to Him at the resurrection/rapture, everything else may be good or it may be bad. We have to accept this and press on in the hope of His future promises. Be sure to have this attitude. When you do, you will avoid many mental pitfalls.   Lord God, help us to keep our focus on Jesus as we walk through this difficult and trial-filled world. May we remember to thank You for each blessing we receive, and may we be faithful to not charge You with wrong when difficult times come. Help us to have this attitude until that great Day when we are finally brought to You when Jesus calls. Amen.

Let your stomach be a balloon inflate,  deflate. Scripture for Meditation Luke 7 NASB 19 And after summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or are we to look for another?” 20 When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, ‘Are You the Coming One, or are we to look for another?'” 21 At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind. 22 And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: people who were blind receive sight, people who limped walk, people with leprosy are cleansed and people who were deaf hear, dead people are raised up, and people who are poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who takes no offense at me.” RSV 19 Aznd John, calling to him two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?” 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?'” 21 In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who takes no offense at me.” Meditation on Scripture: I've heard multiple commentaries on this scripture. On the one hand John knew the divinity of Jesus from the womb when he leaped in his mother when she drew near the pregnant Mary. In the book of John it is John the Baptist who confirms to his disciples that Jesus is the lamb of God who came to take away the sins of the world. Yet I have heard other commentaries stating that John was legitimately investigating the divinity of Jesus. In any case I love this scripture. John points out to these disciples needed to find out for themselves that Jesus was the one they were waiting for. Many times when people start their journey in faith they do so with a tentative and borrowed faith. This is a normal development. The hope is that at some point we all do what these disciples of John did. We need to find out for ourselves.  Additionally the thing that they were comparing was eventually related to prophecy in scripture. When these disciples hear the answer Jesus gave they would have seen Jesus works and compared that to the prophecies Jesus mentioned here. The Messiah would do these things and Jesus had done them. Regardless of how long we have been in the faith it helps to continually confirm our faith in Jesus through scripture, talking to spiritual leaders we trust, and prayer and reflection.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling patient for your own faults and trials. Tuesday, 29 April 2025   And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows it.” Matthew 9:30   “And their eyes, they opened. And Jesus, He in-snorted at them, saying, ‘You see none knows'” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus told the blind men that according to their faith, their sight would be restored to them. Now, that is realized in the words, “And their eyes, they opened.”   The power of the Lord to give sight to the blind is realized. Regardless of what type of blindness they suffered, He went to the cause, identified it, and corrected it with merely the word that it should be done. This is something prophesied would come to pass concerning the ability of the coming Messiah. For example –   “Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.” Isaiah 35:5   However, the state of blindness referred to by Isaiah may be interpreted as simply dulled spiritual senses. This is seen, for example, in Isaiah 42 –   “Hear, you deaf; And look, you blind, that you may see. 19 Who is blind but My servant, Or deaf as My messenger whom I send? Who is blind as he who is perfect, And blind as the Lord's servant? 20 Seeing many things, but you do not observe; Opening the ears, but he does not hear.” Isaiah 42:18-20   Because of this, the verses concerning giving sight to the blind could be taken as a metaphor. However, this is not what the people expected. They took them to be literal. This is why the two men called out to Jesus, calling Him the Son of David. They knew the Messiah would come from the line of David, and they knew that He would be able to restore sight to the blind. Jesus even reminded John that this was a messianic promise –   “And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 3 and said to Him, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?' 4 Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.'” Matthew 11:2-6   Jesus' healing of these men clearly pointed to Him being the Messiah. They understood Him to be such, and their appeal to Him was not in vain. Once healed, Matthew next says, “And Jesus, He in-snorted at them, saying, ‘You see none knows.'”   Here is a new word, embrimaomai. It is derived from en, in, and brimaomai, to snort with anger. Thus, it is a word that mimics an animal like a horse or pig. If one makes a piggy grunt with the nose by inhaling while properly forming the nostrils (gnugnugnugnu), it gives the sense of the intent of the word. But its meaning is that it is accompanied by a sense of anger more than anything else.   When someone is passionate about what he has to say, this in-snorting sound can occur suddenly. Therefore, the word is used to express a strong admonition or warning, such as here. It can be a mark of scolding, such as in Mark 14:5. It can also be used as being moved in the spirit and even groaning, as in John 11:33 and 11:38.   Jesus' in-snorting here signifies His urgent desire for them not to reveal to others what occurred. Otherwise, there would be displeasure in Him for it. The exact reason for this isn't stated, but He had waited until they were inside before attending to them. This means He wanted the matter done privately. And yet, He did other such miracles openly. But those instances were later (Matthew 12:22).   Therefore, because this was a sign that the Messiah would accomplish, it seems that He did not want this openly divulged at this time. It is not until Chapter 16 that Peter declares Jesus to be the promised Christ of God.   Life application: Today, two thousand years after Jesus' miracle healing of these men, people in the world continue to struggle with blindness. Some are born blind, some develop blindness through age or sickness, and some receive trauma that causes blindness.   Think of all that had to go into Jesus' “simple” miracle of giving sight to these blind men. He had to know if they had trauma, what sort it was. If they had an infection, tumor, nutrient deficiency, or stroke, how did it affect the eye? Did the men have diabetes, or was it caused by macular degeneration or glaucoma?   To determine what causes blindness today and then treat it takes many specialists being involved in the process, expensive machinery, an understanding of many variables, etc. From there, some types of blindness can be corrected. Others have no hope of it being so.   And yet, with the spoken word and nothing more, Jesus was able to heal these two men. The power of God was evident in Him and working through Him to effect the miracle. And Jesus, unlike the prophets of Old, did not appeal to the Lord (Yehovah). He merely spoke the word under His own authority.   This reveals the nature of the Man. He is the Lord God. He is great and He is glorious. He is Jesus!   Lord God, how exciting it is to see Jesus for who He is. He isn't just a prophet in a long succession of prophets that came to reveal Your intent for His people. Rather, He is the fulfillment of all prophecy. He is the true and great Prophet. You have united with humanity in the Person of Jesus. Thank You for having so revealed Yourself to us. Amen.

While writing to the first recipients of Hebrews, the author reminds them, “For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.” Their belief in Jesus had real costs for their lives, yet they found that Jesus was worth it because Jesus is Better. What causes people to endure such rejections and suffering with joy? The call to endurance is based on the reality that there is a prize at the end, and this prize is secure and real. So, the writer of Hebrews tells his readers to keep believing. He calls them to remember that they came to faith in the midst of persecution and suffering. Hebrews reminds those who have believed the Gospel to never give up, keep believing in Jesus, to hold on to our confession with confidence. Because faith in Jesus comes with a promise that in a little while the Coming One will come, and will not delay, and those who hold on to Jesus will gain what has been promised, a better and lasting possession.

Send us a messageIn Chapter 17 of the Book of Revelation, we are introduced to the Harlot who ridesthe Beast, and in verses 3-5, we read the description of her as seen through the eyes of John the Apostle. The majority of Prophecy teachers and scholars who have sought the Holy Spirit's wisdom in Truth, believe that this Harlot is the Mother Church of Rome that is drawing every other false way into the Babylon Mystery Religion of the Antichrist - through her ecumenical seductions. In “The Promised Golden Age & The Coming One World Religion,” we take a penetrating look into the many religious interfaith endeavors that serve her in her seductions, and how she is almost ready to take her place next to the Antichrist as his darkened Bride.Support the showVisit our website: https://agapelightministries.com/

Passage: 31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 32 Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings. 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way. 34 For you sympathized with the prisoners and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, because you know that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession. 35 So don't throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God's will, you may receive what was promised. 37 For yet in a very little while, the Coming One will come and not delay. 38 But my righteous one will live by faith; and if he draws back, I have no pleasure in him. 39 But we are not those who draw back and are destroyed, but those who have faith and are saved. First Baptist Church Sherman, Texas (Sermon Audio)

'Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities. And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.' “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear! “But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, and saying: ‘We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not lament.' For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is justified by her children.”' Matthew 11:1-19

* The earthly ministry of Jesus was marked by many miraculous events. We have already seen Jesus cast out demons, heal general sicknesses and specific diseases including leprosy, healing a paralytic, and healing a man with withered hand. Last week, we saw Jesus heal the Centurion's servant from a distance and raise the widow of Nain's son from the dead! * One would think that this would be enough proof to validate His claim as Messiah. However, we know that from the response of many today, that is sadly not the case. * However, there are times when even we who believe can be confused and have shades of doubt regarding what we have read in God's Word. Today, we will see how Jesus addressed doubt in those who were around Him.

Over the last 100 years the world has seen the formation of the Parliament of the World's Religions, the World Council of Churches and the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions. These ecumenical organizations have moved the world closer to a one world religion, and the Pope today is actively rallying Christians, Muslims, Jews and Pagans into this system. Yet this is exactly what the bible predicted, which means that we are likely living in the generation of the Lord's return. Matthew 11:1-19   When Jesus had finished giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities. 2 Now while in prison, John heard about the works of Christ, and he sent word by his disciples, 3 and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or are we to look for someone else?” 4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: 5 those who are blind receive sight and those who limp walk, those with leprosy are cleansed and those who are deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have thegospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is any person who does not take offense at Me.” 7 As these disciples of John were going away, Jesus began speaking to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? Romans 5:15-21 // Ben BeasleyIn our passage today we find Paul continuing his excursus on Adam that we had last week. And he assumes that the reader knows the story of Adam. When Paul says Adam is a type, he is setting up a contrast between Adam and Christ. In our passage today we are going to see three contrasts which are: We are separated through rejection, but are welcomed through receiving; Our death comes from the first man, but our life comes from the perfect man; and our sin is great, but God's grace is always greater. God's grace through Jesus is a free gift. But it's only yours if you reach out to it. You've got to reach. God's grace is enough. Will you receive it?Sermon Notes: https://www.bible.com/events/49170332 Prayer Requests: https://ccefc.ccbchurch.com/goto/forms/2509/responses/new23.11.26
