As another day begins to draw towards its close, let's pause together for a few quiet moments, open God's Word and find renewed confidence in the goodness of God. Some days ask more of us than we expected. We have carried responsibilities, faced unexpected disappointments and perhaps quietly hidden worries that no one else has seen. Yet none of these things change who God is. His goodness is not diminished by difficult days, and His loving care remains a secure refuge for every heart that turns towards Him. Nahum 1:7 (NIV) “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.” What a comforting promise to receive this evening. We are not invited to face life's challenges alone. We are invited to come near to the God whose goodness never fades and whose care never grows weary. Within His presence we discover fresh courage, quiet reassurance and a place where anxious hearts can breathe again. So this evening, let's gently remind ourselves that fear will not win, because Jesus Christ remains our safe refuge, surrounding us with His steadfast love and gracious care. Father, thank You that Your goodness remains constant through every season of life. Thank You that Your presence is a place of welcome, safety and lasting hope. Lord Jesus, bless every listener this evening. Bring healing to those who are unwell, comfort to those carrying hidden grief, renewed courage to those facing uncertain circumstances and peaceful assurance to everyone who longs to know Your nearness. Help us find our security in You rather than in changing situations. Holy Spirit, draw us closer to the Father's heart, strengthen our confidence in His goodness and help us become people who reflect His kindness to others. Father, thank You for watching over us through the night and for bringing us safely into this new day. Some are wondering how they will face today's responsibilities. Some are carrying worries about their health or their family. Others are quietly wondering how they will make ends meet or find the strength to keep going. If that is where you find yourself today, you are not alone. Before we look at everything waiting for us, let us first look to the God who is already waiting for us with open arms. Psalm 46:1 (NIV) “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” What a wonderful promise to begin the day. The Lord does not promise that we will never face difficult moments, but He does promise that we will never face them without Him. Before this day unfolds, before the conversations, the decisions, the unexpected interruptions or the hidden struggles, God is already present. His strength has not been exhausted. His love has not grown weary. His faithfulness has not changed. Father, thank You for the gift of this new day. Thank You that whatever today may bring, Your presence goes before us. Lord Jesus, strengthen every person listening today. Bring peace to anxious minds, healing to weary bodies, hope to discouraged hearts and fresh courage to those who feel overwhelmed. God's Justice and Mercy: An Introduction to Nahum | Nahum 1:1-8Stu launches our new series "Storming the City" by tackling Nahum, a confronting book about God's anger, jealousy, and judgment on the Assyrian Empire. But this isn't a different God from the New Testament, it's the same God who is just, powerful, patient, and our refuge.A hundred years before Nahum, God sent Jonah to preach judgment to Nineveh. Shockingly, they repented. God showed mercy. But a century later, they'd returned to their evil ways. Nahum reveals what happens when mercy is ignored: delayed judgment is not cancelled judgment. Don't mistake God's patience for permission.The Assyrian Empire was the dominant world power, ruling through fear, violence, and psychological terror. Their capital Nineveh seemed untouchable. But in 612 BC, floodwaters from the Tigris River weakened the city walls and the empire fell, never to rise again. What God declares through Nahum, God brings about.Stu unpacks God's jealousy (not a character flaw, He's jealous for His glory and for creation being used properly), God's terrifying power over creation (His way is in the whirlwind and the storm), and God's heart as our refuge for those who trust Him. All that anger toward sin is toward those who oppose Him, but for those who turn to Christ, there is refuge.This isn't just ancient history. Just like Noah's flood, just like Nineveh, one day God will enact justice on this world. People will be unprepared. But mercy is real, just as real as judgment. I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2563 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, we begin our exploration of Psalm 46, focusing on verses 1 through 3 from the New Living Translation. This psalm is a powerful declaration of God's protection and strength, reminding us that He remains our refuge even in times of chaos and uncertainty. The themes in this passage are deeply relevant to our lives today. We all face seasons of turmoil—times when the world around us seems unstable, and fear threatens to overwhelm us. Yet Psalm 46 calls us to shift our focus from the storms to the unshakable security of God's presence. Let's begin by reading the passage together: Psalm 46:1-3 (NLT) 1 God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. 2 So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. 3 Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! God—Our Refuge and Strength (Verse 1) The psalm opens with a powerful statement: “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” The word refuge paints the picture of a strong fortress, a place of safety amid a storm. When life feels overwhelming, God offers Himself as a shelter where we can find peace and security. But God is not just a place of refuge—He is also our strength. He doesn't simply offer protection and leave us to fend for ourselves; He empowers us to stand firm. This reminds us that God is not distant or indifferent. He is “always ready to help,” present in our struggles, and never caught off guard by our troubles. Illustration: Imagine a lighthouse standing firm during a raging storm. No matter how fierce the winds and waves become, the lighthouse remains unmoved, offering guidance and safety to weary sailors. That's the picture of God as our refuge—unshaken, ever-present, and always available. Application: What do we turn to when trouble comes? Some seek refuge in financial security, relationships, or personal strength. But those things can fail us. Psalm 46:1 calls us to find our security in God alone. When we make Him our refuge, we discover peace that surpasses understanding. No Fear in the Face of Chaos (Verse 2) Because God is our refuge and strength, “we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.” This verse describes a scene of utter destruction—earthquakes, crumbling mountains, and shifting landscapes. The remarkable 2019 movie Little Women sent me back to my worn copy of the novel, especially the comforting words of Marmee, the wise and gentle mother. I’m drawn to the novel’s depiction of her steadfast faith, which underlies many of her words of encouragement to her daughters. One encouragement that stood out to me was this: “Troubles and temptations . . . may be many, but you can overcome and outlive them all if you learn to feel the strength and tenderness of your heavenly Father.” Marmee’s words echo the truth found in Proverbs that “the name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (18:10). Towers were built in ancient cities to be places of safety during danger, perhaps because of an enemy attack. In the same way, it is through running to God that believers can experience peace in the care of the One who is “our refuge and strength” (Psalm 46:1). Proverbs 18:10 tells us protection comes from God’s “name”—which refers to all of who God is. Scripture describes God as “the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6). God’s protection comes from His mighty strength, as well as His tenderness and love, which causes Him to long to provide refuge to the hurting. For all who are struggling, our heavenly Father offers a place of refuge in His strength and tenderness.
