On Minnesota Now, we hear from many different people in Minnesota over the phone and in the studio. But we don't often meet them in the community, where news and life happens. In our Out to Lunch series, MPR News host Nina Moini sits down for a meal with people from across Minnesota.Akram Osman is entering his third year as principal of Mankato East High School. He also graduated from the school in 2009. Osman was one of the first Somali principals in the country. And he was recently awarded a Bush Fellowship to help increase representation in school leadership and reduce systemic barriers in education.
Case Notes, August 30th, 2025: A suspiciously cozy murder mystery has been committed. The suspects—Tommy Metz III, Mandy Kaplan, Steve Sarmento, and Justin “JJ” Jaeger—have assembled remotely, each with their own dubious alibis and hot takes. The film: The Thursday Murder Club, Netflix's big adaptation of Richard Osman's beloved novel. The crime? A charming cast, a confusing mystery, and a script that may or may not have committed third-degree exposition. This month's Film Board roundtable dives headfirst into the soft lighting and softer stakes of this senior-led whodunit. JJ comes in as the film's most vocal defender, praising its character-driven structure and comparing it (gasp!) to Knives Out. Tommy and Steve are less convinced, calling the movie pleasant but forgettable, faulting everything from flat cinematography to emotionally neutered finales. Mandy, the show's resident Osman superfan, mourns the depth lost in translation from page to screen. Pete, meanwhile, accuses Chris Columbus of directing every scene like it's the trailer—and not in a good way. From plot structure and adaptation choices to the aesthetics of Cooper's Chase and the misuses of Sir Ben Kingsley, this episode covers it all. Was it a missed opportunity or just an okay pizza? Can Helen Mirren's exposition dumps be forgiven? Did we really need the cold case? Should somebody address the case of Jonathan Pryce? If you love spirited disagreement, spoilers aplenty, and occasional emotional whiplash caused by the word “cake,” this is your episode.Watch & DiscoverWatch Now: NetflixOriginal Theatrical TrailerAdapted from The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman Support The Next Reel Family of Film Podcasts:Become a member for just $5/month or $55/yearJoin our Discord community of movie loversThe Next Reel Family of Film Podcasts:Cinema Scope: Bridging Genres, Subgenres, and MovementsThe Film BoardMovies We LikeThe Next Reel Film PodcastSitting in the DarkConnect With Us:Main Site: WebMovie Platforms: Letterboxd | FlickchartSocial Media: Facebook | Instagram | Threads | Bluesky | YouTube | PinterestYour Hosts: Pete | JJ | Steve | Tommy | Andy | Ocean Shop & Stream:Merch Store: Apparel, stickers, mugs & moreWatch Page: Buy/rent films we've discussedOriginals: Source material from our episodesSpecial offers: Letterboxd Pro/Patron discount | Audible

Hz. Osman (r.a.)'in İslâm'dan önceki ve sonraki, halife olmazdan önceki ve sonraki hayatını inceleyen kimse, kendisinde üstün özellikler, yüksek seciye örnekleri toplanmış parlak bir müslüman silueti görecektir. Hz. Osman (r.a.) cahiliye döneminde hiç içki içmemiştir. Osman (r.a.)'in ne derecede hayâ, utanma sahibi olduğunu göstermektedir. “Peygamber (s.a.v.) benim odamda yaslanmış halde idi. Babam Hz. Ebubekir (r.a.) içeri girmek için izin istedi. Ona izin verildi. Hz. Peygamber (s.a.v.) aynı halde duruyordu. Hz. Ebubekir (r.a.) içeri girdi ve Resûlullâh (s.a.v.) ile görüşüp sonra çıktı. Daha sonra Hz. Ömer (r.a.) izin istedi. Ona da izin verildi. Resûlullâh (s.a.v.) durumunu değiştirmeden Peygamber (s.a.v.) ile konuşup çıktı. Sonra Hz. Osman (r.a.) içeri girmek için izin istedi. Resûlullâh (s.a.v.) yattığı yerden doğruldu ve giysisini düzeltti. Hz. Osman (r.a.)'a da izin verildi. Bu davranışının sebebini sordum. Resûlullâh (s.a.v.): “Gerçekten Osman çok utangaçtır. Bu halde iken ona izin verseydim, bana hacetini ulaştıramamasından korktum.” buyurmuştur.” Bir başka hadis-i şerifte ise Hz. Peygamber (s.a.v.)

“I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.” Those words were spoken at one time by David Bowie, and thus are gospel to us here on The Art of Longevity podcast. Fortunately, some bands still live by that same philosophy. For evidence, we revisit the world of Suede. Suede has refused to become boring. Somehow, this band of 40 years have gone the other way - more exciting and visceral than ever. Suede are not hanging about to become their own echo! Albums like Autofiction and now, its immediate follow-up Antidepressants are not just the proverbial ‘return to form' type records. They are nothing short of a reinvention. Mat Osman, co-founder member with Brett Anderson and bass player, shares his views on the new Suede record:“It feels like Autofiction on steroids. If Autofication was a TV show, Antidepressants is the film version. We took everything more widescreen with this record”. However, for Osman - you can forget about that old cliche of a band making music for themselves and hoping the world will agree (that's what Rick Rubin has been telling us with The Creative Act: A Way of Being and to be fair, more than a few artists have told me it works for them. It's not for Suede. Instead, the band's creative mission has been guided by their fans - their reactions at live shows, to the band directly, but also the band's own interpretation of what a Suede audience really wants. “A band without an audience isn't a band. It's a hobby,” Osman declares. That emotional connection is Mat's affirmation - fan tattoos of favourite songs, tears at gigs, and stories about Suede songs at weddings. This fan connection is Suede's compass in the band's 4th career phase. And so we return to a key central theme of longevity; usefulness to people. “As I get older, those moments where someone says, ‘That song helped me,' mean everything,” he reflects. “That's what I'm proud of. There's a community feel [between the band and the fans] that becomes more and more important. It's evident from this ‘Revisited' episode, that Mat Osman and Brett Anderson have a fair degree of telepathy on many things - a shared vision that no doubt has added focus to Suede's current run of creative form. They even agree on the most ironic thing about where Suede has arrived; that they were the least likely band to survive in the first place. “Longevity is not something we strived for, it just happened as a side effect of our bloody mindedness and passion for making music”.They still have it. In a fit of extreme absentmindedness, I forgot to upload this episode after recording it and then did the same thing for part 3 in the series! Osman of Timisoara 3 and 4 will follow this over the next few days. Within the larger life-travels of Osman's book, this is going to be a relatively short journey, but as you'll hear, it will still be quite a stressful one. Osman needed to get to Timisoara, collect the payment for his freedom, and then bring that money back to his captor. You will not be shocked to learn that there would be misadventures along the way. Jim Osman unpacks 2 Peter 1:10-11 in this sermon on making election sure. He exhorts believers to pursue spiritual diligence by cultivating Christian virtues, thereby confirming their calling and election. Making election sure offers assurance of salvation, steadiness in faith, and a confident entrance into Christ's eternal kingdom. Osman's message clarifies that assurance is both possible and desirable for Christians who walk in holiness and trust in Christ alone. ★ Support this podcast ★

Richard talks to Gyles about his early years - how his happy childhood spent holidaying with families from the street was disrupted by his father leaving the family when Richard was only nine. He talks about his struggles with his eyesight, and how that and his height made him feel separate, and different. He talks about his amazing mum, and how she coped as a single parent. Richard talks about how much he loves TV, and about how much he loves his wife, Ingrid Oliver. And he tells Gyles about seeking help for his food addiction. This is a fascinating episode full of wisdom and honesty. It was recorded at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Jim Osman teaches that applying all diligence is essential for Christian growth. Believers must cultivate virtues such as moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, and love. By using all diligence, Christians respond to God's grace earnestly, avoiding legalism and complacency. Osman underscores that this pursuit is not about earning salvation but working it out through sanctification, grounded in faith and empowered by God's provision. ★ Support this podcast ★
Pastor Jim Osman tackled many theological and eschatological topics during this engaging question-and-answer session. He first addressed the meaning of Jude 6–7, explaining the domain of angels and their judgment, and clarified his view that angels did not cohabitate with humans. He provided thoughtful answers on Genesis 6's “sons of God,” the identity of the Levites in the future temple, and the nature of sacrifices during the Tribulation. Additional topics included the experience of time and glorified bodies in the Millennium, sleep and seasons in the new creation, the purpose of the Millennial Kingdom, the fate of infants in heaven, and the possible roles of believers in judging angels. The discussion highlighted Osman's pre-tribulational, dispensational perspective and a commitment to biblically grounded answers.Questions AskedIn Jude 6, what habitation did the angels leave, and where did they go?In Jude 7, who are the “they” that committed the same sin as Sodom and Gomorrah? What about the view that fallen angels cohabited with humans (Nephilim)?Who are the “sons of God” in Genesis 6?In Job 1, who are the “sons of God” who came before the Lord? What sacrifices will occur in the future temple during the Tribulation?Who are the Levites today, and how will they be identified for temple service? What will time be like for us in the Millennium in glorified bodies? Will we need to sleep in a glorified body? Why is there a Millennial Kingdom—why not move straight to the new heavens and earth? If heaven is perfect, why would God bring anything from this corrupted creation? What kind of body will we have in the new creation—is it the same as now?Did Adam and Eve have glorified bodies before the fall? Will the new creation have seasons or cycles (like falling leaves)? Will there be marriage or procreation in the eternal state? Will we judge angels, and what does that mean? What happens to infants who die? The ongoing conflict in Gaza has emerged as the deadliest war for journalists in modern history. Two Palestinian journalists were killed in Israeli attacks just this week, underscoring the extreme risks faced by reporters in the region. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 165 journalists have been killed since October 2023 — a staggering number that surpasses the total journalist fatalities during the entire span of World War II.The conflict has escalated to a critical point, with Israel resuming strikes on Gaza after breaking a ceasefire with Hamas. Amid this humanitarian catastrophe, journalists persist in their crucial role, risking their lives to document the unfolding events and bring critical information to the world. In response to attacks on Palestinian journalists, Forbidden Stories launched the Gaza Project — a collaboration bringing together over 40 journalists from 12 organizations, including the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism and The Intercept. Their mission: investigate and expose the unprecedented threats facing journalists in Gaza and the West Bank. On this week's episode of The Intercept Briefing, Hoda Osman, the executive editor of Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism, says the killings have become hauntingly familiar: “A repeated scene seeing a journalist is being killed, and you get the news, and then you see their bodies with a bloodied press vest. And then you see the mourning of their colleagues and their families.”In addition to this extreme risk, Osman says the daily realities confronting Palestinian reporters are difficult to imagine. “I was speaking to a journalist there and she's telling me how hard it is because it's Ramadan and they fast, and at the end of the day at sunset, they're supposed to break fast, but there is no food. And how they're all starting to become extremely weak because of the lack of food. And that was before even the strikes began again,” she says.“Most of them are living in tents,” Osman adds. “A few weeks ago when the weather was really cold, one of the journalists was texting me how they don't know what to do to be warm. They're constantly cold. And then she sent me videos of — it had rained — the whole tent just completely flooding.”But despite all these personal challenges, they keep going.
