I'd Rather Be Reading

I have a great story to tell you about our guest today. Back in 2020, my co-host Jessica and I were looking to start what would become our podcast about the royal family, Podcast Royal. By 2020, Cathy Heller was already a prolific podcaster, as her show Don't Keep Your Day Job — which has since been renamed — debuted in 2017. Cathy gave me such helpful advice, and Jessica and I went on to launch Podcast Royal in November 2020 before I solo launched I'd Rather Be Reading about six months later in 2021. Cathy was so generous, selfless, and kind, and I've never forgotten it. Cathy gave so much to me without getting anything in return — she is truly, truly a good person. A light in a sometimes dark world. Now, flash forward to the present day, we're here to celebrate Cathy today with the December 3 release of her brand new book Abundant Ever After: Tools for Creating a Life of Prosperity and Ease. Speaking of Abundant Ever After, that is the updated name of Cathy's podcast, which is seven years running and 916 episodes strong! Along with her podcast, Cathy's book teaches us how to create the most expansive life possible and serves as a powerful guide for anyone ready to step into their most authentic self and transform their lives. In a word, Abundant Ever After is transformative, teaching us to do less striving and more surrendering, allowing more and more abundance in our lives. Today on the show we talk about what abundance is, how to live an abundant life and eschew limiting beliefs, and lean into, in Cathy's words, “a life that takes your breath away.” She also discusses what she might say to someone who is a skeptic of all of this, and so much more. It's a very powerful conversation with someone whose life I look at and genuinely say, in the iconic words of When Harry Met Sally, “I'll have what she's having.” I can't state enough what a difference Cathy has made in my life — and I'm not the only one. She is so giving of her time and energy and resources, and one of the best gifts she's given the world comes in the form of this fantastic book. Let me tell you a little bit about the force that is Cathy Heller. She has been described as a “fire hose of inspiration,” and is a dynamic transformational coach, spiritual guide, meditation teacher, and motivational speaker. In addition to Abundant Ever After, Cathy also wrote Don't Keep Your Day Job: How to Turn Your Passion into Your Career, and a through line through her work is providing inspiration for listeners and readers to boldly pursue their dreams and live authentically, to find their purpose and live on purpose. Cathy originally had a career in the music industry and has found new purpose through her work trying to help others find their happiest, most fulfilled selves. The world could use a million more people just like Cathy, and I can't wait for you to learn more from her today. She's the real deal.  Abundant Ever After: Tools for Creating a Life of Prosperity and Ease by Cathy Heller

It's Day 2 of our 12 Days of Holiday episodes. What does it take to live an abundant life? That feels like a pie-in-the-sky question to ask, but I want you just to entertain the thought for a moment. What does abundance look like to you? While money might be the first thing that pops into your head, I challenge you to think about abundance not simply as a dollar amount but as a way that you want to live your life - what you want to do, where you want to work, how you want to spend your time and how you want to feel. I've been super interested in this idea of abundance and how to bring what you want to do in life into reality, so I turned to the abundance expert herself, Cathy Heller. You may know Cathy from her super popular podcast, The Cathy Heller Podcast, or her book, Don't Keep Your Day Job. Cathy believes that creating true abundance is about this simple formula - your mindset plus action. This episode is a joy explosion full of Cathy's inspiring words and practical steps to help you start walking in abundance this year. I hope you're ready. Grateful Dead's 1982 Show Highlights and Unpopular TunesLarry Mishkin, introduces a Grateful Dead show from August 28th, 1982, featuring an opener where Jerry Garcia stumbles over lyrics. Larry shares insights into the band's performance, suggesting they might have been dosed that day. He discusses the history of the Grateful Dead at Woodstock, why they were omitted from the film, and a song called "Keep Your Day Job," disliked by fans and dropped from their repertoire. Larry contrasts it with the successful breakout of "West LA Fadeaway" that night, highlighting the unique way the Grateful Dead introduced and refined songs in their concerts.Produced by PodConx  Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergRecorded on Squadcast INTRO:               Bertha                           Track No. 1                           3:16 – 4:46                            Great opener, as always.  One month after my first show and Jerry still can't remember the words.  So instead we focus on the jam.  He may fall short in lyrics but his playing is electric.  Story is that the band was supposedly dosed that day and the comments reflect that the band was “ON”. SHOW #1:          I Used To Love Her But It's All Over Now                           Track No. 7                           1:05 – 2:22                            It's All Over Now" is a song written by Bobby Womack and his sister-in-law Shirley Womack.[1] It was first released by The Valentinos, featuring Bobby Womack, in 1964. The Rolling Stones heard it on its release and quickly recorded a cover version, which became their first number-one hit in the United Kingdom, in July 1964.                         The Rolling Stones' version of "It's All Over Now" is the most famous version of the song. It was first released as a single in the UK, where it peaked at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, giving the Rolling Stones their first number one hit.[5] It was the band's third single released in America, and stayed in the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks, peaking at number 26. Months later it appeared on their second American album 12 X 5. The song was a big hit in Europe and was part of the band's live set in the 1960s. Cash Box described it as a "contagious cover of the Valentinos' click" and "an infectious thumper that should head right for chartsville.”                         Covered by almost everybody in the music industry from the Stones to Ry Cooder to Nils Lofgren, Wide Spread Panic, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and even Molly Hatchet (Flirtin With Disaster)                         Covered by the Dead 154 times with Bobby singing.                        Frist on September 6, 1969  - Family Dog at the Great Hightway                        Last on July 2, 2995 – Deer Creek SHOW #2:       Day Job                        Track No. 10                        2:52 – 4:05                         First time played in concert.  Second set openerEventually played 57 times                        Last time on April 4, 1986 at Hartford Civic Center                         Per Robert Hunter in “A Box of Rain” collection of his lyrics, “this song was dropped from the Grateful Dead repertoire at the request of the fans. Seriously”  First song ever ‘rejected' by the Deadheads!  And the band listened to them and stopped playing it!                                But WHY was it so universally unpoplular?     “a lot of people thought it was the band making fun of/scolding deadheads who spent all their time following around the band. Hunter kind of hinted at that at one point in an interview I think.” “Hippies don't work” “It sucks” There are a few fans who liked the jamming or could relate to the song, but overall, NOPE.            SHOW #3:          West LA Fadeaway                           Track No. 12                           1:08 – 2:35                            Breakout version of this song, along with Day Job.  Five years later In The Dark was released with Wet LA on there, but Day Job did not make the cut.                                                     Dead would play this song 141 times in concert                           Last was June 30, 1995 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh                            Always a fan favorite, great music, fun lyrics (only Hunter could work “copasetic” into song lyrics)  SHOW #4:          Playin' In The Band                           Track No. 14                           1:50 – 3:10                            Great version, very upbeat (a dosed band?) and sharp, Bobby right there with his inflection on PPPPLyaing in the BAAAnd, very sharp.  I like this clip because it shows the transition from the hard charging opening of the song into a more mellow sound that signifies the jumping off point for the band  into a Playin jam that could go anywhere.  In this case, almost 20 minutes before segueing into Drums>Space>The Wheel>The Other One>Truckin'>Black Peter>Playin Reprise.  What an amazing run of music.  Great tunes, great jamming, outside in Oregon, what else could a Head ask for?  Some clean Orange Sunshine or whatever the band was on!  OUTRO:              Dupree's Diamond Blues                           Track No. 20                           1:05 – 2:24                            This song was written by Hunter/GarciaIt appeared on the Dead's third album, Aoxomaxoa (released June 20, 1969).                           First played on January 24, 1969 at the Avalon Ballroom                           Last played on October 13, 1994 at MSG                           Played a total of 83 times.                            "Dupree's Diamond Blues" is based on an American folk song titled "Frankie Dupree," which was based on a real historical figure named Frank Dupree.According to In The Pine: Selected Kentucky Folksongs, Dupree tried robbing a diamond wedding ring from a jewelry store in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1921. He intended to give the ring to his girlfriend Betty. When a police officer showed up, Dupree shot him dead. He then fled to Chicago where he killed another officer and wounded others.Authorities eventually apprehended Dupree while he was getting his mail. They shipped him back to Atlanta where he was executed on September 1, 1922. Giggles:  The term "jelly roll" was once common African American slang for a woman's genitalia. The great ragtime pianist Jelly Roll Morton took his name from that very meaning. In 1924, Morton recorded an influential jazz song titled "Jelly Roll Blues," which is most likely what Hunter is referencing here.                          In the late ‘60's and early ‘70's the band played it more frequently.  Although more in the Americana style adopted by the Dead at the beginning of the ‘70's than the primal Dead from the ‘60's.  But it became linked with primal Dead by being part of so many shows from that period.  On the Fillmore West complete recordings for Feb. 27, 28 and March 1,2 on both the first and third night the band opened the second set with this song into Mountains of the Moon before launching in the Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Lovelight suite made famous on Live Dead.  But after that it just kind of fell off the band's radar except for certain tours where it would show up for three or four shows before again getting pushed to the side.  Very enduring.

What does it take to live an abundant life? That feels like a pie-in-the-sky question to ask, but I want you to just entertain the thought for a moment. What does abundance look like to you? While money might be the first thing that pops into your head, I challenge you to think about abundance not simply as a dollar amount, but as a way that you want to live your life - what you want to do, where you want to work, how you want to spend your time and how you want to feel. I've been super interested in this idea of abundance and how to bring what you want to do in life into reality so I turned to the abundance expert herself, Cathy Heller. You may know Cathy from her super popular podcast, The Cathy Heller Podcast, or her book, Don't Keep Your Day Job. Cathy believes that creating true abundance is about this simple formula - your mindset plus action. As Cathy says, “it all starts with optimism. You have to feel a level of possibility for the things you want to do in life and that starts with a vision and the thoughts you have around that vision.” This episode is a joy explosion full of Cathy's inspiring words and practical steps to help you start walking in abundance this year. I hope you're ready.LINKSThe Cathy Heller PodcastMost Abundant Year WorkshopSPONSORSThanks to ShipStation for sponsoring the show. Jenny Lee is the owner and founder of BeeVibe, a lifestyle and mindset health coaching business, where she teaches women how to create a joyful morning routine that fits their lifestyle and flows with what they naturally love to do! Jenny and I met in an amazing podcasting class lead by Cathy Heller. She and I connected in class easily and we both decided to take a leap of faith and just pressed record on the episode! Jenny started her morning practice using something as fun as belly dancing to get her out of bed in the morning. She encourages her clients to choose something they already love to do to get them out of bed and get them moving right away so their energy can flow and the rest of their day can flow as well! Keys for creating a joyful morning: 1. Starting first thing in the morning while the brain is between the theta and delta wave and your brain is most malleable, be aware that whatever seed you plant at that time is what will grow during your day. 2. Start each day in the energy of gratitude and love. From this child-like place of wonder, you'll already have a deep satisfaction for your day. You'll be in a state of receiving. 3. Choose something to do right away when you wake up that will light you up to get the energy flowing. 4. Waking up earlier can be difficult at first, but you can start small with 5 minutes and add on. 5. A new habit is not sustainable if it's not fun and you don't love it. 6. Your morning practice starts with what brings you joy! Some fun examples are belly dancing, stretching, dancing to your favorite song, etc 7. Stack a new habit on top of the morning practice like taking in nourishing foods and nutrients. 8. Nourish yourself on 4 levels positively each day: Emotional (gratitude), Physical (dance or movement), Spiritual (prayer), and Intellectual (inspirational podcast). 9. Avoid the news first thing in the morning! 10. Show up in your world with that great, clean energy every day. It is the most generous thing you can do for the world! *Bonus- When your light is lit, you can create a ripple effect in the world! What does it mean to be a mystic in the modern age? Many of us think of mysticism as something for spiritual masters who lock themselves away from the world in monasteries and convents and dedicate their lives to constant prayer. But we are all called to a close and yes mystical relationship with God and to lead lives of contemplation. And today's guest, Kelly Deutsch, wants to help people do just that. After entering a convent, Kelly came down with an illness that left her bedridden for 18 months—and spurred great spiritual desolation and growth. She went on to found Wanderlust, a center for contemplative formation, which provides podcasts, courses and other spiritual resources to those hunger for a closer union with the divine. Meet Cathy Heller Cathy Heller is a fire hose of inspiration. She's the host of the popular podcast, Don't Keep Your Day Job, which has 30 million downloads and has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur Magazine, HuffPost, Inc Magazine, Business Insider, and several times by Apple. Each week Cathy encourages thousands of listeners to find more purpose, make an impact, and build an abundant life by doing what they love. She's interviewed successful authors, celebrities, entrepreneurs, spiritual leaders, experts, and everyday heroes about what led them to the biggest moments in their lives. She shares how you, too, can create a life you can't wait to wake up to every day. Cathy's book Don't Keep Your Day Job is filled with inspirational stories from people in her community who have taken control of their life's journey. Her book details how to find the work you're meant to do, grow your business, and wake up to a life you love. She is a phenomenal leader for spiritual seekers, creatives, and entrepreneurs, and she's helping people everywhere add their gifts to the world. Cathy often says, "purpose is the opposite of depression." She is truly lifting others to be the happiest version of themselves. You can learn more at cathyheller.com  Discomfort Is The Gift Cathy Heller had a record deal but was dropped from the label. She left her dream of singing and writing music to get into real estate. While financially successful, Cathy felt miserable. She remembered advice from a Tony Robbins tape (I know, so old school, but we used to listen to cassette tapes), which said to ask a good question of yourself. In doing this, Cathy asked herself what she really wanted to do and realized at the time it was to write music. She cold-called producers and directors of TV shows (mind you, without any prior relationship) and got good at building her discomfort muscle. While it was super uncomfortable at first, Cathy Heller pursued these contacts and started to ask what they needed help with. The response was that she was the first person to ask what was needed and truly listen. She pushed beyond her comfort zone and kept calling, making new relationships with producers, and soon was writing music for hit TV shows. Cathy explained that stepping out of her comfort zone and doing it anyway became a gift. And that her business was about radical empathy, as Seth Godin says. They responded to her humility and willingness to listen. Her discomfort was the gift that kept giving as she learned to tap into these same principles and expanded into teaching others how to grow their business.  Ask This Question To Pursue Your Goal The question that kept Cathy Heller exploring newer and higher heights was what she needed to do next. She often didn't know but would assume she could figure it out. Cathy took the next right action and step, adding in authenticity and humility, and grew her business to seven figures. This question of what do I need to do next, is one she continues to ask herself. Why Courage Is A Must Courage is truly the juicy part. You learn to make a choice even if fear is there because in the end, you can go to bed with your soul at peace. You've got to reframe how you look at courage. The goal is to grow and tap into courage, not to be comfortable. Courage is the ingredient that will allow you to move past your ego and fear. Facing courage and doing it anyway moves you beyond your comfort zone and will enable you to reach your dreams. As Deepak Chopra says, who we are is the divine pretending to be a person, and courage is really about showing up as your divine self.  Abundance & Thriving Are Your Birthright We live in a vibrational field where our thoughts have a vibrational frequency. Within 4 seconds, you can feel another person's vibe -- literally. Our job is to thrive. Scarcity is an illusion and is not true. The bigger issue is our capacity to receive and trust that we're meant to be abundance. Just look at our bodies with over 50 trillion cells, powerhouse cells thriving and scientifically connected to the planets, and cosmos, as depicted by our circadian rhythm. It's time to trust our inherent abundance. In truth, our greatest abundance is our creativity. We're creators and meant to be innovating, thriving, and creating. What has helped Cathy Heller build her dream life and call in greater abundance is setting a daily practice of meditation and purposely being generous. Cathy meditates every morning to connect to a state of oneness, which ironically is a realm of being one with all and a nobody. She also lists 5 things every day of ways she can be generous and give to others. Her nugget of wisdom: stop overthinking, give from a place of true gratitude and abundance and watch the natural momentum. Final Thoughts Be courageous. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Being afraid and doing it anyway is a perfectly natural state of being but remember you are a Divine being, and facing your discomfort will take you far. Cutting Chai Stories

Welcome to the third and final installation of the mini series on what to prep before you write a SINGLE word of copy. This series is ESPECIALLY important for sales pages, so if you're planning to launch a course or group program or a new product, listen up. Over the past two episodes, we covered two other elements to prep before you start to write your copy, and those were Voice of Customer and Core Transformation. Today we're going to talk about benefits versus features. Chances are that if you've been in the online business space for more than a minute, you've heard people say, talk about the benefits of your product, not the features. But what does that MEAN????? Well I like to think of features as the NOUNS. So, if you're selling an online course with live coaching calls and a 300-page workbook, the FEATURES might include: --8 weeks of prerecorded calls that can be consumed in video, audio or transcript format --Starts September 1, new videos released every week --You have lifetime access, so you can watch at your own pace --Live calls every Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern in our private Facebook group --Each participant will be mailed a 300-page workbook in physical and e-book format, which contains all the exercises and resources you'll need to follow along --Price, refund policy, size of cohort if that's relevant, length of videos, length of coaching calls, etc So that's all the important information that you'll need to know. Coz if you're never available on Sundays at 2 p.m. and the live coaching is crucial to the success of the course, maybe you won't purchase it this round. Or if you're in a different time zone and want to know if they'll be recorded so you can watch them at a time that's more convenient to you, this list of features will be important to answer your questions. So they're pretty vital to know, right? The list of features? So why is everyone pooh-poohing them all the time? What's WRONG with listing all the features? The short answer is—nothing. We want and NEED to know the nitty-gritties to help us make a decision. But whether the calls are held at 2 p.m. Eastern or 2 p.m. Pacific is not the make-or-break factor when you're just encountering this program. First you wanna know if this can help you with the particular problem you're having. And the timing and length of the calls isn't going to tell you that. For that, you need the benefits. Listen to the episode to understand the difference between benefits and features, with real-life and made-up examples for services and products. PLUS how to supercharge your benefits so that potential clients can see that your offer is exactly right for them. Also mentioned in the show are Cathy Heller and her podcast, Don't Keep Your Day Job, as well as Harry Dry's website marketingexamples.com. Both are invaluable sources of information for me, I highly recommend you check them out. Finally, the content of this mini series on what to prep before writing a single word of copy (ESPECIALLY your sales or landing page) came about as a result of a question by an email subscriber. I take conversations with my subscribers seriously and respond to each one. Want input into subsequent episodes? Have a question you haven't seen answered anywhere else or that you want my take on? One trait that is common among entrepreneurs is the thrill of the start-up.  Often we enjoy going “all-in” on new projects or pursuing our latest idea.  Sometimes we are even tempted to walk away from our day job as we believe it's holding us back from experiencing success in our newest side hustle.  In this episode Jon and Les discuss this tendency and offer up the challenge to “keep your day job” while you're pursuing and building other streams of income.  In this show you will learn:On average, wealthy people have seven different streams of income while poor people only have one source of revenue. While it's good to have multiple streams of income, it's also advisable to focus on building them one at a time.Don't confuse the consistency of a paycheck with security.  That paycheck can disappear in an instant.  Financial security comes from diversifying our income. It's dangerous to rely too heavily on our side-hustle or new start up business to provide for our financial needs in the early days.  This results in unnecessary pressure that can be detrimental to our new business as it causes us to appear desperate in our transactions with people. We want to keep delivering good results in our day job as we build our side hustle. In the backstage portion of this episode Jon and Les speak to the pastor who truly does want to leave their “day job.”  We offer advice for how a pastor can make a healthy transition out of pastoral ministry and into a new season of entrepreneurial ministry in the marketplace.Show Notes & Resources:Learn how to join us Backstage.Ready to Become an EntrePastor? In today's episode, Margaret came up with this topic while listening to one of her favorite podcasts, Don't Keep Your Day Job. Pete Holmes said: "are you doing what you love, or are you doing what society tells you you should be doing" this quote brings up many emotions. Margaret hears this quote and thinks of all the people around her age that have "valuable jobs" that they went to school for and that somehow their job is more important than hers even though she would be downright miserable doing those jobs. Martha always goes back to being an immigrant, and the idea that's been ingrained in her brain is that she has to be constantly producing to be valuable. Society will tell us every day that we are never good enough, and we will never reach the goal of being good enough or doing enough, thanks to capitalism. So remember to take the time to do what makes you happy instead of always doing what society tells you to do, even if money is not attached to it.
