George Washington is perhaps the most consequential leader in the USA's short history. Having demonstrated his leadership credentials as commander-in-chief during the American Revolutionary War, he then set a precedent for all subsequent US presidents to follow by refusing the opportunity to seize power. Yet he also craved to be part of the British Empire and ignored pleas to right other wrongs of his era.Alexis Coe, New York Times Bestselling author of You Never Forget Your First: A Biography of George Washington, joins Matt Lewis to unpack the complexities and contradictions of History's Greatest Man.Echoes of History is a Ubisoft podcast, brought to you by History Hit. We live in a world that is "impact" dominated. Everyone wants to have a great name. How is it that the greatest man of all time had very little impact in his day, but would go on to reshape the whole world? It would be through his humble submission to the will of his father. Romans 5:12-21

We're DOUBLING UP on this episode of Praising Kane, which features a discussion on Carol Kane's first episode of Taxi (and some very controversial statements from Liam on 80s sitcoms), but also Ralph Rosenblum's 1981 TV adaptation of James Thurber's satirical short story THE GREATEST MAN IN THE WORLD, featuring an introduction by Henry Fonda! Not only that, but we also fit in a discussion on the recent announcement of Carol Kane joining the cast of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS! It's almost TOO MUCH, yet here it is. Enjoy.

In nearly 50 years of filmmaking, British director Mike Leigh has ranged from comic portrayals of ordinary life amid the social breakdowns of Thatcher's Britain (Life is Sweet, High Hopes) to gritty renditions of working-class constraint and bourgeois hypocrisy (Meantime, Abigail's Party, Hard Labour) to period films that reveal the “profoundly trivial” elements of artistic life even two centuries in the past (Topsy-Turvy, Mr. Turner). Leigh contains multitudes. What Roland Barthes says about the novels of Marcel Proust is true of Mike Leigh films as well: you notice different things every time you return to them. In this Columbus, Ohio conversation, Mike and John they discovered their shared love for a hometown boy made good: James Thurber. The conversation ranged from recording working-class voices in the 19th century to Method acting to the pointlessness of fetishizing closeups to the movies John had never seen and should have–and that's only the first twenty minutes. It cries out for footnotes, but maybe the best result of all this talk would be simply your decision to go off and see a couple (or like John seven) of Mike Leigh films you'd never seen before. You won't be sorry. Discussed in this episode: Peter Jackson (dir.), They Shall Not Grow Old John Osborne, Look Back in Anger Ingmar Bergman (dir.), The Seventh Seal Harold Pinter, The Caretaker Jean-Luc Godard (dir.), A bout de souffle John Cassavetes (dir.), Shadows and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie Sam Mendes (dir.), 1917 Alexander Sukorov (dir.), Russian Ark James Thurber, The 13 Clocks, “The Unicorn in the Garden” and “The Greatest Man in the World“ Norman Z. McLeod (dir.), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Stanley Davis (dir.), Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool Philip Roth, Portnoy's Complaint and Exit Ghost Ermanno Olmi (dir.), The Tree of Wooden Clogs George Eliot, Middlemarch Philip Larkin, “This Be the Verse“ H.G. You wanted it, you got it. The WHOLE story of how Tony almost died while on vacation. Literally. And we are all grateful that he's still here. And we still question if it could still be after effects of the vaccine. Plus we had the GREAT Dan Lust Esq on the show to talk about the Trevor Bauer situation. He suggests we read the fine print so we don't end up in a SouthPark situation (of course we had to play the clip, so beware). Dan hadn't heard of the White House's new "Minister of Truth" Nina Jankowicz aka Creepy Mary Poppins, so we showed him her audition video. (Scary) Jim from Cheltenham got his mic to work and he had an archived interview w/ Tony and the "Greatest Man in the World" Last but not least, we remind everyone to "Look on the Bright Side of Life". Tony Bruno covers News, Politics, Sports & Entertainment like no other & it will keep you laughing all night long. Join him, Miss Robin & guests from 7-9p ET every Fri Night LIVE on NoFilter.net.
