In this episode, Greg sits down with Canadian football historian and scholar, Dr. Frank Cosentino, to talk about his playing career and the CFL as a cultural institution in the 20th Century, especially during the time he played. They also discuss how the CFL dealt with the threat of the WFL in the 1970s, during which John Bassett planned on placing a franchise in Toronto. Lastly, they discuss the American expansion, changing sports landscape and the prospects of a successful CFL/XFL merger, should one ever be pursued again. Scott was slated to join the conversation; however, just minutes before recording tornado warnings were issued for Birmingham and power went out. We are happy to report that eventually the weather cleared and power was restored. Grey Cup champion, Vanier Cup champion, hall of famer, scholar, teacher, and professor emeritus are just a few of the ways one describes the greatest Canadian sports historian who has authored 18 books, and not just only on football. Drafted by the Hamilton Tiger Cats in 1960, Dr. Cosentino was in five consecutive Grey Cup games, 1961-65, including the first overtime Grey Cup game in 1961, the “fog bowl” in 1962 and the “wind bowl” of 1965. The team's two Grey Cup wins were in 1963 and 1965. As a Tiger Cat he also played in the last of the CFL vs NFL exhibition games against the Buffalo Bills, in which Hamilton prevailed and he passed for the team's final touchdown. In 1967, Dr. Cosentino was traded to Edmonton in 1967, led the team to a 9-6-1, and was named Edmonton's nominee for the Best Canadian Schenley Award, after which he was traded to Toronto for the 1969 season. He finished his career after the 1969 season, playing in 141 regular season games and starting in 41, posting 20 wins, 19 losses, and two ties. He completed 482 passes out of 996 attempts for 7,678 passing yards with 53 touchdowns. While playing in the CFL, Dr. Cosentino continued his education, earning both a master's and doctor of philosophy degree. After his playing days ended, in 1970, he was named head football coach at the University of Western Ontario and assistant professor. In 1976 he moved to York University where he was professor and chairman of physical education and athletics for a five-year term. As a professor, he taught courses in sport history, and as a coach, won two Vanier Cups at Western in 1971 and 1974. He is a member of Halls of Fame at McMaster, York, Western, and Ontario University Athletics; and in 2018, was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Though retired, Dr. Cosentino continues to write and all of his wonderful books, which are required reading for students of Canadian football, are available at his website- www.valleyoldtimers.com.

Hustle Makes it Happen the podcast Season Finale is a HOT one featuring NFL player Delvin Breaux and his amazing story of perseverance!Delvin Breaux reached football's highest level, signing with his hometown Saints, after an unconventional rise. Playing for McDonogh 35, Breaux fractured his C4, C5 and C6 vertebrae during a kickoff return in a high school football game on October 27, 2006.Though many feared the worst, doctors found that Breaux was “neurologically fine”. As a highly recruited prep player, Breaux was supposed to make waves for the Tigers in Baton Rouge. Although LSU honored his scholarship, he was never medically cleared to play and he spent time as a player-coach within the program. Setting out on his own, Breaux looked for every opportunity to continue playing the game he loves. He played seasons for the Louisiana Bayou Vipers in the minor Gridiron Developmental Football League and the former New Orleans VooDoo of the AFL. His strong play in minor leagues landed him an opportunity with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2013, where he would spend the next two seasons, becoming an All-Star. Saints coach Sean Payton would soon after recruit Breaux for his NFL opportunity. After his first season with the Saints in 2015, Breaux finished his first year in the NFL with 45 tackles and 3 interceptions and was named the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award. His time with the Saints would eventually come to an end two seasons later after suffering a broken fibula in 2016 and 2017, opening the door for his return to the CFL. His story is the epitome of HUSTLE! #podcast #personalgrowth #selfhelp #lifeskills #nfl #Delvinbreaux #podcasts #thebreauxshowDelvin Breaux's Website! https://www.thebreauxshow.comProduced by Jim Chapman and the team at Envision Podcast Studios https://www.facebook.com/ENVISIONPODCASTSTUDIO Subscribe on Youtube!Hit the bell for notifications as soon as they drop! The Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast welcomes back co-host Joe Pritchard from his trip to good ol' Regina for the 109th Grey Cup last week. While Joe's beloved Winnipeg Blue Bombers took a loss to the once-again charmed Toronto Argonauts, he's more than ready to talk about quite the compelling Grey Cup. So compelling it was in fact, that RWB co-host Os Davis doesn't wonder if CFL fans are a bit spoiled with the quality of their championship games since the Ottawa Redblacks started crashing the Canadian football title party. Os also has a bit of a bone to pick with TSN, CFL.ca and others who can't wait to tear down the Bombers with cries of “It ain't a dynasty!” Finally, the RWB chats briefly about the Bo Levi Mitchell signing and the immediate future of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats… the Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast: Yeah we're saying it – Is it June yet…?”
Peter Loubardias talks with Logan Gordon to get you set for the Flames' contest against the Kings. It all seems like business as usual on the Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast for a while. Co-hosts Joe Pritchard and Os Davis discuss the week that was in Canadian football: Os enthuses about his Montreal Alouettes, both pity the Ottawa Redblacks fanbase and the sad fate of head coach Paul LaPolice, admire the razor-sharp Calgary Stampeders and wonder where BC can go from here. Then, as Joe recounts playoff scenarios, Os has a revelation that the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats could both miss the CFL playoffs in 2022, which threatens to derail the entire enterprise with Os happily babbling “So you're saying there's a chance” for several hours straight. Luckily Joe manages to coax Os back to reality in time to play CFL Pick ‘Em for week 17 and plan for ways to lose money betting CFL games. All in all, it's a lot of fun – though maybe not so much if you're not a Ticats fan… The Rouge White & Blue podcast: Oddball Americans loving the Canadian game
The Lions, Stampeders and Argonauts all clinched playoff spots last week. We break down their games and how the rest of the season (and playoff picture) is starting to shape up.
The CFL might have been slightly short on number of games in week 15, but three games gave us plenty to discuss on the Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast. So RWB co-hosts Joe Pritchard and Os Davis mull over items like the Edmonton Elks' late fourth-quarter win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and the Riders' rapidly slipping grip – formerly a stranglehold – on a playoff spot via crossover. Like just how seriously we should take the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after they ran up the score on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Like why the Calgary Stampeders keep taking these heartbreak losses. And like how good things might get if/when Vernon Adams really gets rolling with the BC Lions. Plus, Joe's got playoff scenarios mostly involving West teams but including , Os has some adventures in gambling, and both the RWBs've got picks for next week's games. The Rouge White & Blue podcast: Always keeping the ratio correct…

386yds passing & 5 TDs in one half of football? You know Donnovan's driving the Nathan Rourke hype train this week, especially as 'Kid Canada' gets set to take on the O.G. Bo Levi Mitchell in Calgary this week. We also discuss the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 4th quarter woes and are the Riders looking east for their road to the Grey Cup?
In the show's second hour, Aaron Korolnek and Matt Cauz discuss Week 9 of the CFL season, the start of the NFL preseason with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor joins First Up to preview Week 9 of the CFL season. Ryan Dinwiddie should not be fired and McLeod Bethel-Thompson should not be replaced. We try to end this ridiculous debate today. We also look at how the Argos should go about attacking the Ticats and what they might expect from Hamilton.
Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast co-host Os Davis is miserable about CFL fantasy football, betting on the CFL and the general state of the CFL East – but mostly he's just hating the Saskatchewan Roughriders this week after the rescheduled game killed his wagers on the Argos and his DFS team but good. Os tries to keep his sanity as, along with RWB co-host Joe Pritchard, they break down an exciting week 7 in the Canadian Football League and look ahead to some dandy matchups in week 8. Os also takes a deep-dive into the Toronto Argonauts' schedule and comes to the realization that not only are the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Ottawa Redblacks in serious trouble already, but that a West crossover is just about inevitable. All this and Joe makes the Canadian wannabes jealous with tales of his luxurious two-game trip he's taking up north next week. The Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast: We'll forgive the Riders. Some day. Eveentually…
Mike and Jason run through a successful night for the BC Lions over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats under a broken roof at BC Place. Justin Dunk of 3 Down Nation joins the show to diagnose why the West has been so dominant over the East for several years. This podcast is produced by Dominic Sramaty and Greg Balloch. The Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast is back for another week of Canadian Football League chat and prognostication – peppered with a lot of ranting by co-host Os Davis about the bad-luck Ottawa Redblacks, the dumb-luck Montreal Alouettes and the %^&*%&^^%^ Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Joe Pritchard actually does get in a few good words edgewise, particularly on the fantastic Winnipeg Blue Bombers-Calgary Stampeders game. The RWB also considers (again) the sorry state of the East, the viability of the Toronto Argonauts as a legitimate championship contender, and Os's doubling back on preseason predictions of an East crossover for the playoffs to now forecast a West crossover making the Grey Cup. Finally, no Adventures in Gambling™ this week, but the RWB's liking a couple of underdogs in week 7 which just might prove profitable. Then again… The Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast: Always bet responsibly (i.e. don't listen to us)
Co-hosts Justin Dunk, John Hodge, and JC Abbott discuss Garrett Marino's suspension and subsequent apology, the firing of Montreal Alouettes' head coach Khari Jones, the Edmonton Elks trading Nick Arbuckle to the Ottawa Redblacks, Jon Ryan signing with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and the B.C. Lions inducting Paul McCallum and Jovan Olafioye into their Wall of Fame. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
[We celebrate eminent North-of-the-border sportswriter Ed Willes' selection to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame's media wing last week - with a June 2018 archive re-release of one our most popular episodes!] As Johnny Manziel's pro football comeback journey wraps up a promising pre-season with the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats, we take a moment this week to reminisce on the approaching 25th anniversary of the CFL's bold, but ultimately ill-fated attempt to bring its exciting brand of pigskin south of the border in 1993. When the NFL put the brakes on its two-year World League of American Football experiment in the summer of 1992 (which included a franchise in Montreal, dubbed the “Machine”), an economically wobbly CFL sensed an opportunity to fill the gap in US markets newly comfortable with the notion of pro football, as well as a potential growth path for the tradition-rich Canadian game to expand outside the Provinces. In fact, two WLAF owners, Fred Anderson (Sacramento Surge) and Larry Benson (San Antonio Riders) "crossed over" to the Canadian League and were awarded newly rechristened franchises for 1993 – Anderson's Sacramento Gold Miners and Benson's San Antonio Texans. While the Gold Miners were the only ones to make it into the following season's expanded CFL schedule (Benson literally – and ominously – left the league at the altar by bowing out the day of the league's press conference announcing the expansion), the door was open to a wild three-season adventure that brought the wide-open Canadian game to far-flung American outposts in Baltimore, Las Vegas, Shreveport, Memphis, Birmingham, and, ironically (via eventual relocation from Sacramento), San Antonio. Longtime Vancouver Province sportswriter Ed Willes (End Zones and Border Wars: The Era of American Expansion in the CFL) joins the podcast to discuss the league's short-lived American expansion effort, which then-commissioner Larry Smith had hoped to eventually encompass ten US teams in a fully expanded 20-team league. Among the misadventures, Willes recounts: the 1995 champion Baltimore Stallions (who operated as the nickname-less “CFLers” the previous season in a trademark dispute with the NFL over the “Colts” moniker); the woefully attended Las Vegas Posse (who practiced on the Strip in the Riviera Hotel's parking lot and were forced to play their last “home” game in Edmonton); the Memphis Mad Dogs' unique approach to fitting the longer/wider CFL field into the Liberty Bowl; why football-mad Birmingham couldn't draw flies for Barracuda games once college and high school seasons started; and the “Great Tucker Caper” – featuring the infamous brothers Glieberman and their attempt to steal away the Shreveport Pirates to the greener pastures of Norfolk, VA.
