This week on the podcast, after the inspiring conversation in our last episode with Wesley Watkins about The Jazz & Democracy Project and more, I couldn't resist giong back into the GC archives for an encore presentation of my conversation with Maestro Wynton Marsalis. We recorded this conversation when the podcast was just a toddler, back in the days when we were just “doing something” and not yet “manifesting a new world.” It was also on the eve of the 2020 election, however, like so many of our conversations the topics and insights remain evergreen. Oh, my! Patrons get to hear about her dogs and why she thinks each one is special. The Women of Wynton's by Donna MummaMid-Century Glam Meets Murder Mayhem Get swept away to the glamor of a 1950's department store where four women's loyalties, vanity, friendship, and detective skills are put to the test. Audrey Penault once led a glamorous life as a model but now works as devoted secretary to Mr. Wynton. To her fellow employees, she is too vain and uppity. Mary Jo Johnson, a wife and mother, longs to find her worth in the cosmetics department, but it may take a while for the shy housewife to discover her voice. Vivian Sheffield owns and runs the bridal salon within Wynton's. She is proud of her accomplishments and won't let anyone take them away. Gigi Woodard dislikes her job as waitress in the store's lunchroom, but she is determined not to let her secret shortcomings cause her to lose the position. These four women have much to dislike about each other, but they unanimously agree that Mr. Wynton is the best of employers and must be protected at all costs from someone who seems determined to see him gone for good. When other employee deaths occur, can the women band together to solve the murders, or will they discover it is one of their own bent on destroying Wynton's from within?Get The Women of Wynton's by Donna Mumma.Meet Donna MummaI am a native Floridian, farm kid and dreamer. I came from a small town in Central Florida filled with some of the greatest storytellers. Tales of hunting trips gone awry, flipped airboats, eccentric relatives and beloved dogs seasoned my childhood. From the stories of my parents and neighbors, I learned two important lessons. First, life comes with sunshine and hurricanes. Second, with God's help, we can flourish in both.My parents had a saying. It's not important that you get knocked down but that you get back up. I write stories about people who fall, stand and press forward with God's help.I invite you to come with me on this writing journey. SynopsisToday's date in 1962 marks the birthday in New Orleans of Terence Blanchard, American jazz trumpeter, composer and educator. “I come from a family of musicians,” Blanchard says. “My father was an opera singer, my mother played piano and taught voice, my grandfather played the guitar. What I wanted was to be a jazz musician, have a band, travel and create music.”Well, he got his wish! Blanchard started piano at 5 and trumpet at 8, playing music with childhood friends Wynton and Branford Marsalis at summer music camps and studied composition with their father, Ellis Marsalis. In 1980, while still in his teens, Blanchard began performing with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and later Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. In the 1990s, Blanchard started writing film and TV scores and has composed more than 40 of them to date. In 2019, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his music for Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman. He holds major teaching positions and tours with his quintet, the E-Collective. Branford has achieved a level of public notoriety that is rare for jazz musicians. From 1992 to 1995, he worked as bandleader for Jay Leno's Tonight Show, and throughout the 1980s and '90s, Branford participated in high profile collaborations with rock and rap musicians including Sting, The Grateful Dead, and Public Enemy. Branford has also worked extensively as a composer, scoring over a dozen films and television programs. Branford Marsalis will make two appearances in Indiana this January.

This episode features a very special interview with jazz icon Wynton Marsalis by his old friend Christian McBride from The Jazz Cruise earlier this year.  The two have a long history going back to 1984 when Christian was a 14-year-old bassist in Philadelphia and Wynton took him under his wing. He even assured Christian's mother that we would watch over Christian when he moved to NYC a few years later.  Given their relationship and how they both became mentors to so many musicians across multiple generations, it should come as no surprise that the theme of their conversation here was about mentorship and inspiration. Wynton discussed his unique relationship with the late jazz writer and provocateur Stanley Crouch and with Betty Carter, as well as his connection to so many greats, not only in jazz, but in Black American culture, like Ralph Ellison, August Wilson and Albert Murray. Christian also gave Wynton a three-song Blindfold Test, featuring trumpeters.  You can guess how that went. The two also played a couple of duets.  But throughout their talk, it's the stories about their elders that resonated.

After four decades in the international spotlight, the achievements of saxophonist Branford Marsalis continue to grow. From his initial recognition as a young jazz lion, he has expanded his vision as an instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, and educator, crossing stylistic boundaries while maintaining unwavering creative integrity. In the process, he has become a multi-award-winning artist with three Grammys, a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master, and an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence. Growing up in the rich environment of New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educator, the late Ellis Marsalis, Branford was drawn to music along with siblings Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason. The Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, remains his primary means of expression. In its virtually uninterrupted three-plus decades of existence, the Quartet has established a rare breadth of stylistic range as demonstrated on the band's latest release: The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul.  Branford has not confined his music to the jazz quartet context. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with acclaimed orchestras worldwide, performing works by composers such as Copeland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem, Vaughan Williams and Villa-Lobos. And his legendary guest performances with the Grateful Dead and collaborations with Sting have made him a fan favorite in the pop arena. His work on Broadway has garnered a Drama Desk Award and Tony nominations for the acclaimed revivals of Children of a Lesser God, Fences, and A Raisin in the Sun. His screen credits include original music composed for: Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks starring Oprah Winfrey and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. Ma Rainey is the Netflix film adaptation of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play, produced by Denzel Washington and released in December 2020. Branford has also shared his knowledge as an educator, forming extended teaching relationships at Michigan State, San Francisco State, and North Carolina Central Universities and conducting workshops at sites throughout the United States and the world. After the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Branford and friend Harry Connick, Jr. conceived of “Musicians' Village,” a residential community in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The centerpiece of the Village is the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, honoring Branford's father. The Center uses music as the focal point of a holistic strategy to build a healthy community and to deliver a broad range of services to underserved children, youth, and musicians from neighborhoods battling poverty and social injustice. In this episode, Branford shares his background, education, and musical journey. Episode 5-Immanuel Wilkins: Community Breeds Greatness

Strictly Jazz Sounds-SJS

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 18, 2023 55:05

Immanuel Wilkins is considered one of the most compelling instrumentalists in improvised music today. His primary instrument is the alto saxophone but that's not all he can play. There's a video you can find on YouTube of an interview he did when he was 11 years old. You see an acoustic bass in the background. He can play not only the bass but also piano and other instruments. I consider Immanuel Wilkins one of today's young geniuses roaming the urban landscape. In episode 5 of Strictly Jazz Sounds Philadelphia-raised, Brooklyn-based alto sax player, composer, bandleader, and Blue Note recording artist Immanuel Wilkins joins me. Immanuel surrounds himself with today's young jazz heavy weights. I made a rough list of some of those young geniuses, and they numbered close to 20. And those were only the musicians living in the New York area. What a time Immanuel is living in, a time where he becomes a Blue Note recording artist at 22 years old. His first album, Omega, was named the number 1 jazz album of 2020 by The New York Times. That's heady stuff. Two years later, Immanuel releases his second recording on the Blue Note label to critical acclaim, The 7th Hand. The thing is all members of his quartet were under 25 years old. So, is there a sort of renaissance, a rebirth of young, brilliant talent occurring in jazz today? Immanuel Wilkins thinks that's possible. In the 1950s a resurgence of young talent occurred. One of them, recently deceased maestro Wayne Shorter, others include trumpeter Lee Morgan, bassist Paul Chambers, and pianist McCoy Tyner. John Coltrane barely made the list because he hit 30 years old in 1958. Then in the 60s there was Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, and maestro Ron Carter. And there's Bobbi Humphrey, Blue Note's first female instrumentalist, signed when she was only 21 years old in the 70s. And, in the early 80s, there were the Young Lions that reinvigorated jazz performance. Those cats included Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, and Terence Blanchard, four of the group of neo-bop jazz musicians in the 80s that defied avant-garde. What does it take to wade into the fast-moving waters of New York jazz? Immanuel knows the type of work ethic required to be signed to the number one jazz label, according to the current DownBeat Critics Poll. Blue Note's Don Was has his ear to the ground, says Immanuel. He knows the current landscape and how to pick the hot players. Immanuel was fortunate to work with his close friend vibist Joel Ross as well as pianist James Francies, who signed with Blue Note at 24 and 23 years old respectively. Something must be in the water or perhaps the air. Immanuel's faith is also at full display on his sophomore release, The 7th Hand. Is this a rare thing among jazz artists? Known as one of the most eclectic trumpet players in New York City, Bailey is an in-demand musician and teaching artist on call for everything from traditional jazz to R&B and Pop, to classical. He became a member of The Buddy Rich Band while still in college, and his career has included long-running gigs with Ray Charles, master conguero and bandleader Ray Barretto, The Woody Herman Orchestra, and Frank Sinatra, Jr. His work with Latin Jazz innovator Arturo O'Farrill won two Grammy awards for the albums The Offense of the Drum and Cuba - The Conversation Continues. He has played on more than 70 albums and, as a jazz educator, has taught at the University of Miami and Florida International University. A trumpet prodigy, Bailey's spectacular gifts began to be noticed as a high school musician in 1984 when DownBeat Magazine cited him in its annual Student Music Awards for outstanding performances in both the classical and jazz trumpet categories, noting “Shades of Wynton!” The same year, he was a finalist in the National Foundation for Advancements in the Arts (NFAA) Arts Recognition and Talent Search, along with Donny McCaslin and Bill Charlap; and won the National Association of Jazz Educators' Youth Talent Contest. Later, as a senior at the Eastman School of Music, he won DownBeat's Best Instrumental Soloist award. Looking back, he says, “It all started for me when I discovered Clifford Brown. Clifford was the centerpiece of the golden era of jazz trumpet, and a great place to begin my lifelong study of the instrument. He was influenced by everyone before him, and became an influence on everyone after.” Bailey, who continues to teach privately, believes that educating the next generation of musicians is essential for any artist. “In American culture, where the arts are often ignored or deemphasized in both schools and the mainstream media, it is up to us, the artists, to inspire an appreciation for great art,” he says. “By keeping performance standards as high as possible and sharing our devotion with others, especially children, we enrich countless lives.” In this episode, John shares his background, education, and musical journey.  If you enjoyed this episode please make sure to subscribe, follow, rate, and/or review this podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast, ect. Renowned instrumentalist, Branford Marsalis, has spent four decades in the international spotlight touring the globe and perfecting his skillsets as the standard-bearer of modern jazz. The Louisiana native also comes from a musical family, with brothers—Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason—becoming acclaimed jazz musicians; and his father, the patriarch Ellis Marsalis, Jr., a jazz pianist and educator himself. But how does a three-time Grammy Award-winner maintain his longevity in a recording industry submerged in a world that continues to grapple with notions of social unrest and injustice? How is he able to sustain such an artistic excellence in musicianship despite the racial tension and political polarization happening in this country? Stay tuned as I SEE U Host Eddie Robinson speaks unguarded with legendary composer and bandleader, Branford Marsalis. He talks candidly about the motivation behind his music; how his father, who died in 2020 from COVID-19 complications, helped inspire his approach to confronting racism; and what he really thinks about the future of American democracy.

He thinks about taking time, he thinks about giving time, and he thinks about sharing time.  He'll tell you: “Time is a joint effort. It's everybody at once. You want to talk about synergy, alliance, brotherhood and sisterhood? Just watch people getting together and having to play time. So much shows up in that. There's so much judgment, so much blame. But then you get to these points of surrender and ecstasy. Something wonderful happens because you went on this journey together. It's so revealing and it's so fulfilling.” Eric Harland is one of the most in demand jazz drummers of his generation. He has played with everybody. Betty Carter, McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Terrence Blanchard, Wayne Shorter, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Esperanza Spalding, Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, Robert Glasper, Joshua Redman, Dave Holland, Chris Potter, Charles Lloyd, John Mayer, and on and on and on. He has appeared on over 400 recordings, and continues to appear at the top of critics' and readers' polls. Plus he once played a solo so intense that it sent my wife to the hospital.  Here he shares his incredible story of growing up in Houston and how he came to weigh 400lbs by the time he was 16 (he eventually lost the weight in college), attending the Manhattan School of Music, becoming an ordained minister, living with singer Betty Carter (“not like that”), learning from legendary mentors, and exploring “time”.  He also shares his thoughts on practice, community, natural wine, and what you can learn about a person by how they drive.
