How do you rebuild momentum after a big change — in your work, your business, or your identity? This week on Tales from The Lane, I'm joined by entrepreneur, coach, and leadership expert John T. Meyer (@johntmeyer_ on YouTube, LinkedIn, and Instagram). We dig into what it really takes to create — and sustain — forward motion when life and work evolve. John shares the story of rebuilding after selling his company, the power of discipline and consistency, and why true confidence doesn't come from results — it comes from becoming the kind of person who does what they say they'll do. You'll learn: How to rebuild momentum after a big transition or pivot Why confidence and courage are different (and how to build both) How to design daily “non-negotiables” that actually work The surprising role of boredom in long-term success What it means to “filter the noise” and focus on what really matters If you've ever felt like you're starting over — or stuck waiting for inspiration to strike — this conversation will help you take that next small step that leads to big momentum.

Chip Higgins: Applying Physics to Entrepreneurship – Building Momentum, Managing Energy, and Achieving Small Business Success

The Essential 11

Are you running out of energy before you run out of ideas? You've got the vision, the drive, and maybe even the team — but somehow, your business still feels stuck in neutral. What if the problem isn't your strategy… but your momentum? In this episode, we dive deep into the science — and the soul — of small business growth. Our guest, Chip Higgins, knows exactly what it feels like to hit that wall. After decades in executive leadership and banking, Chip saw a critical gap: small business owners weren't getting access to the same strategic insight and momentum-building tools that corporations rely on.So he built a solution. As the Founder of Bizzics and author of The Bizzics Way: Powering Your Small Business to Maximum Momentum, Chip has turned the timeless laws of physics into a powerful framework for entrepreneurs — showing how mass, velocity, and energy apply to leadership, team building, and purpose-driven growth.Chip's passion is contagious. He believes small businesses don't need to be big to be massive — they just need the right momentum. In this inspiring conversation, he reveals how to create lasting energy in your business, overcome burnout, and build something that truly lasts. If you've ever wondered how to turn your passion into purposeful movement — this episode is your roadmap.Quotes:"Passion moves you off center, from kind of a potential energy standpoint, into kinetic, like you're willing to do something about it. But, you know, it's really the purpose of it that keeps you going through all of it.""Until you're really risking and willing to fail, you'll always be minimized in the impact that you're having.""I think that level of transparency and humility, of being open, you're constantly amazed at what will come to you if you're open hearted with people about what you're doing." Actionable Takeaways:Audit your business momentum. Ask yourself: Where is my energy going—and is it creating forward motion or just friction? Identify one area where effort isn't translating to progress and refocus it.Shift from passion to purpose. Passion gets you started, but purpose keeps you moving. Define why your business exists beyond profit—and make sure every decision aligns with that mission.Build “mass” before “velocity.” Strengthen your team, culture, and systems first. Sustainable growth comes from density—creating a business that can handle acceleration without falling apart.Monitor your energy management, not just time. Track what drains and fuels your energy daily. Replace one draining task this week by delegating or automating it.Reflect on your authenticity. Ask: Am I building a business that truly reflects who I am and what I believe? Authenticity is momentum fuel—without it, burnout is inevitable. Conclusion:Momentum isn't just about moving faster—it's about moving with purpose. Chip Higgins reminds us that small businesses don't need to be big to make a massive impact. What matters is direction, energy, and authenticity. When you align your passion with purpose and lead with intention, you create a force that doesn't just sustain your business—it transforms it.So take a breath, refocus your energy, and start building the kind of momentum that lasts.

Welcome Pete tell us a little about the MSU Research Foundation and the PitchMI Startup Competition? Michigan's Innovation Showcase PitchMI is now one of the nation's richest state-based startup competitions, offering $4 million in investment. How does this expanded competition elevate Michigan's position as a leader in startup innovation and funding? Regional & Statewide Strategy The competition features four regionally themed events—healthcare in Grand Rapids, clean tech in Traverse City, mobility in Detroit, and AI/software in Ann Arbor—each awarding $250,000, with finalists moving on to compete for a $1 million prize. What's the strategic intent behind aligning region with specific startup industries, and how does it benefit both local ecosystems and statewide momentum? Building Momentum & Ecosystem Engagement Regional winners receive funding and, importantly, time to grow before the statewide finals—an intentional six-month runway for impact and support. Why is this momentum-building phase so critical, and what role do regional networks and ecosystems play in supporting startup trajectories? Long-Term Vision & Scalability With $3 million from the Michigan Innovation Fund and $1 million from Michigan Rise ensuring this is a multi-year initiative, PitchMI aims to run through 2026 and potentially become annual. How does this level of long-term funding and planning reflect Michigan's broader economic development priorities? Equity & Access in Startup Support Although each region focuses thematically, startups from anywhere in Michigan can enter any regional event that matches their focus. Send us a textIf you've ever boosted a post on a whim, tried a week of ads, sent one email and then decided the channel “doesn't work”, this chat is for you. I sat down with strategist Simran Kaur to unpack why one-off marketing keeps stalling and what it actually takes to build momentum you can measure. We didn't chase hacks. We talked about rhythm, small tests, learning loops and the unsexy truth that consistency beats clever every time.Simran and I started with the two mindsets that sink results before you even begin: the “I already know what to do because I heard it on a podcast” camp, and the “guarantee my ROI before we start” camp. Both avoid the same hard work - talking to customers, defining success up front and sticking with a test long enough to learn something. When campaigns underperform, the answer isn't to pivot instantly. It's to isolate what actually failed: the message, the audience, the timing, the offer or the follow-up.We dug into the sales side too. There's no point generating demand if you can't respond quickly or nurture properly. If ten warm leads turned up tomorrow, who calls them, when, and with what? That gap between marketing activity and sales capacity is where good spend goes to die. Simran shared practical ways to match your activity to your ability to follow up, so you protect the brand while you scale. The through-line in all of this is ownership. Agencies and AI can help, but you still need to understand your customers' language, your numbers and your system. That means interviewing real buyers, using their words in your copy and running small, well-designed experiments before you throw serious budget behind anything. It's calmer, clearer and far more effective than campaign roulette.Key takeaways:You don't need a hack; you need a system. Start small with one audience, one message, one offer and one channel, and commit to a two-to-four-week run so you can actually learn. Don't bin a channel without a post-mortem - change one variable at a time and retest. Keep sales and marketing joined at the hip so leads get fast, human follow-up. And keep the understanding in-house: know what you're testing, what success looks like and what the numbers are telling you. What to do nextRun a single micro-test and decide the success criteria before you hit go. Speak to five customers this month and borrow their wording for your ads, emails and landing pages. Map your follow-up so new enquiries hear from you within an hour, with a clear next step. Finally, write down your simple playbook - goals, audiences, messages, channels, KPIs and who does what - so the system keeps running even when you're off the grid.DOWNLOAD MY CONTENT PLANNER - https://becchappell.com.au/content-planner/Instagram @bec_chappellLinkedIn – Bec Chappell If you're ready to work together, I'm ready to work with you and your team. How to work with me:1.
