“Keeping up with the Joneses” is a popular idiom in America. It indicates an attitude of measuring our success or status by the material goods we see those around us accumulating. The negative effects of comparison don't stop at things, though; we can feel the same yearning to keep up with others when it comes to respect, or status, or attention. This innate urge to compare ourselves to those around us doesn't have to be negative, though. We can look up to a mentor or role model and aspire to be like them, their example inspiring us to work hard. On this episode, Melissa and Pete discuss how the various aspects of comparison affect our happiness. Conversation Kindling: Want to discover how happy you are? Take the Happiness Index Survey and see how you compare to one million data points! The questionnaire takes about 15 minutes to complete and will help you see how you define happiness and can help you think deeper about the purpose of life. You can even use your results as a starting point for your Happiness Movement and to spark conversations about the factors that contribute to your well-being. As I continue down this path of creative expression through the podcast while also attending to my writing practice, I've met the most extraordinary people. This was one of those interviews that led to an expansive conversation about community and creativity, and I loved it so much. Meet Lori Snyder, the founder of The Writer's Happiness Movement. The movement is intended to create more joy, psychic space, and financial support for all writers so that they can do what they do - help make the world a better place by writing whatever it is they write about. As an author herself and a former marine biologist, Lori's book The Circus At The End of the Sea will be out on October 19, 2021 from Harper Collins. Lean in as we explore a conversation about imagining a new reality for the world's future by supporting those who can write it into being. It sometimes takes a village to birth something new and meaningful into the world. It's important to be clear about who we are and what we are creating so that our creations can honor what is unique about what wants to be expressed vs. an imitation of what's already out there. Creativity takes time, and it's important that we learn how to stop being busy. “Time off” is exactly what we need in order to produce something amazing, and our culture does not support taking this time. We all need to create psychic space where we can create. “Enough” is an incredibly powerful word for many reasons - it creates space. If we are disassociating or have experienced trauma and have not processed it, we may have difficulty using our imaginative powers until we resolve and process those events. Imagination leads us to freedom from all bonds- so it's critically important for us to get in touch with ours. The Writer's Happiness Movement is an idea that can change the world because it supports the writers who are reimagining the world in ways that are so needed. You can contribute to a vision you believe in by becoming part of the Writers Happiness Movement (https://writershappiness.com/financial-support/).
Being human means that we feel a wide range of emotions, and the most sought after emotion is happiness. We all yearn for happiness, but we don’t often think about how we can actively put in effort to increase happiness in our day to day lives.Michelle Wax founded the American Happiness Project, a country-wide movement to capture and share how everyday people from all walks of life are creating their own happiness, regardless of external factors. In 2019, Michelle took to the road, traveling across the United States interviewing ordinary people and learning about how they created happiness. Her findings, in conjunction with scientific research, inform her interactive seminars, virtual team workshops, and a video series called American Goodness.During her travels and interviews, Michelle found a common theme - there was a point that these individuals reached in their lives where they decided to make a shift or change. Maybe they suffered a tragedy, or they were stuck in the monotony of day to day life, but each one of them actively decided to be happy. Michelle pulls from this theme to create resources, tools, and workshops helping people to actively create their own happiness. This shift is already occurring in those who have heard about the American Happiness Project already, and Michelle is working to make a movement of happiness. Laura is the executive director of the Happiness Alliance. She believes in the importance of data because when you can measure something, you can better manage it and in this case she’s interested in measuring happiness, well-being and the resilience of people and the planet. She has a background in sustainability so that all makes sense. Laura is all about happiness, at least the data behind happiness. She spends her time researching and trying to understand what it is that makes us happy (or not). And how we can make a cultural shift so that we are more focused on happiness not profit. In a time when it’s easy to feel hopeless, she is a self-described “pessimistic optimist.” In other words, she has an optimistic outlook on things but bases her viewpoint in reality—because, as you’ll hear, she’s all about the data. And data is the reality. I went into this conversation having just read some studies about climate change and I was feeling a bit discouraged about how things are going for our planet. But I have to admit that after listening to Laura’s positive outlook on a number of things—and that includes social media, television and even gaming—I felt a bit more hopeful. Again, she’s realistic but she sees a way out of the path we’re headed down. Having been to Bhutan as many times as I have and knowing their policy on Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product, I admit that I’ve always looked at Bhutan as a bit of an anomaly. A tiny country in the Himalayas that’s able to be very thoughtful in terms of their approach to dealing with the rest of the world because they are so small. And it’s much easier to manage or change things when you’re small and growing. And, for the most part, they’ve done a great job at it. But I haven’t ever thought that this kind of approach, this Gross National Happiness, was possible for the rest of the world, particularly the United States. But Laura thinks otherwise. So it’s gotten me thinking a bit differently. Maybe we are on our way to a bit of cultural shift. I guess time will tell. Anyway, I hope this episode gets you thinking about the future and in a positive way. With that, please enjoy this conversation with Laura Musikanski. ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Happiness may be an inalienable right, but there are 565 MILLION web pages, and 175,000 products on Amazon helping people find it, giving a not-so-subtle impression that something is missing. Our increasing problems with depression and substance abuse reinforce that impression. Gretchen Martens is a woman of many talents – anthropologist, coach, educator and even improve comedy performer, as well as entrepreneur and business developer - who is taking a new approach to this whole problem – at least for America. She has recently returned from a trip to Bhutan, Epicenter of the Global Happiness Movement, where she went to find some new skills and approaches that can help turn this tidal wave of unhappiness around. Bhutan is a tiny country with huge ideas, but as the Dahli Lama has said, 'If you think you are too small to make a difference, try spending the night with a mosquito”. She spent 2 weeks traveling the country, observing and learning. She looked to see if they truly did seem happier - and they did - and then started looking into how they did this. Although she has spent a lot of time in her career teaching people to be happier, she did indeed come back with new skills and is eager to share them and hopefully spread more happiness in this country - something that seems sorely needed given all the recent episodes of blatant hostility we have seenin our own citizens. It doesn't have to be that way!!! In addition to her speaking and her forthcoming books, she has applied her diverse talents to some things she offers freely to the public – like her daily happiness messages and items on her facebook page, and you will learn how to access them while listening to this program, so keep a pen and paper handy for that and any other notes you may want to take about new approaches to a happier life.
