Send us a textJoin Professor Jeffrey Sachs and Yakov M. Rabkin, historian and Professor Emeritus at the University of Montreal, for a wide-ranging and fascinating discussion on the history of Zionism, Jewish thought, and the modern state of Israel. Delving into Rabkin's path-breaking work, including his newest book, Israel in Palestine: Jewish Rejection of Zionism, Rabkin and Sachs discuss the early opposition to modern Zionism from many parts of the world Jewry, and the deep theological, political, and cultural divides that Zionism has created in Jewish communities around the world. Together, Rabkin and Sachs trace the surprising origins of Zionism in 17th century British Protestantism, and its transformation into a modern political movement in 19th century Europe, led by both British evangelical Protestants and Central and Eastern European secular Jews. They delve into Herzl's Zionist movement, which faced many Jewish opponents, including rabbinical authorities, assimilated Jews in Western Europe, and socialists who viewed it as a distraction from class struggle. Rabkin and Sachs discuss the pivotal role of Britain's Balfour Declaration, the Russian revolutionary roots of Israel's political culture, and the enduring legacies of figures such as Theodor Herzl and Ze'ev Jabotinsky. The conversation then turns to the present crisis in Israel and Palestine. They discuss the ideologies of Israel's ruling parties, the rise of Israel's religious-nationalist movements since 1967, and the role of these ideologies and movements in the ongoing conflict. Rabkin's scholarship offers listeners a deeply informed narrative of history, religion, and power - shedding a powerful light on the disastrous, ongoing Israel - Palestine conflict.

Donald Trump has stood resolutely with Israel - but yesterday's unprecedented attack on Qatar may have been a strike too far. The US president said the bombing of a residential compound in Doha where the Hamas negotiating team were meeting to discuss the latest US ceasefire proposal did “not advance Israel or America's goals.” Meanwhile, his Alaska summit was supposed to break the deadlock on ending Putin's war on Ukraine - but instead, Russian drones over Poland have sparked fears of an all-out war with NATO. A newly declassified annex to Special Counsel John Durham's report includes a March 2016 memo showing that Hillary Clinton personally approved a campaign plan to publicly tie Donald Trump to Russian election interference, allegedly to distract from her private email scandal. The intelligence indicates the Clinton campaign enlisted both the DNC and outside groups to shape that narrative, then encouraged the FBI to amplify it. Despite FBI skepticism and internal disagreement over credibility, the Steele dossier was used to launch the public "Crossfire Hurricane" investigation, further fueling the false Russiagate storyline. Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger point out how Jimmy got this story right from the beginning, yet was widely smeared even by others on the independent media left. So will apologies and mea culpas be forthcoming? Don't hold your breath. Plus a segment on economist Jeffrey Sachs' scathing indictment of Trump's plan to saddle Russia with additional sanctions unless a ceasefire in Ukraine can be reached in ten days. President Trump has clearly run out of patience with Putin, reducing his 50-day deadline to end the war in Ukraine to little more than a week. The penalty will be severe tariffs, which the US says will hammer the Russian economy. Yet Russia's economy is actually growing because of its extraordinary spending on weapons, and because oil once bound for Europe is selling freely in China and India. That's why former president Medvedev, a close ally of Putin, says that every deadline is a step closer to a far more dangerous situation. So, who is going to blink first - Trump, or Putin? And what happens if neither of them do? Send us a textJoin Professor Jeffrey Sachs and Professor James Romm, classicist and historian at Bard College, for a captivating discussion on one of the most dramatic and fascinating political experiments of the ancient world: Plato's involvement with power politics in Syracuse (Siracusa). Drawing on Romm's newest book, Plato and the Tyrant, Sachs and Romm explore the extraordinary story of how the great philosopher Plato attempted over the course of three decades to bring philosophy into the heart of government.Together, they delve into Plato's journey to the court of the autocratic ruler Dionysius in ancient Syracuse, where he hoped to transform a tyrant into a philosopher-king. They discuss the political turmoil that unfolded, Plato's close relationship with the philosophically minded Dion, and how Plato's experiences deeply shaped his writing of The Republic. Romm reveals how Plato's real-world political experiences ultimately informed his later, more sober work The Laws, and how these texts reflect a lifelong quest to define justice, leadership, and the possibility of a virtuous society. This episode offers listeners a rich narrative of political intrigue, philosophical ambition, and the enduring relevance of Plato's quest to unite ethics and power - an ancient story with striking implications for our world today. The Book Club with Jeffrey Sachs is brought to you by the SDG Academy, the flagship education initiative of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. Send us a textWhen American B-2 bombers struck three Iranian nuclear facilities, they didn't just destroy buildings—they dramatically reshaped the Middle Eastern geopolitical landscape. This watershed moment represents America's full entry into the Israel-Iran conflict, moving beyond defensive missile interception to offensive strikes on Iranian soil. The fallout has been swift and multifaceted. President Trump warned Iran against retaliation while simultaneously expressing frustration with Israel for violating a negotiated ceasefire. "I'm not happy with Israel," Trump declared bluntly. "You don't go out in the first hour and just drop everything you have on them." This rare public criticism of Israeli actions reveals the complex dynamics at play as America attempts to navigate its role in this volatile conflict.Perhaps most fascinating is the deep split within Trump's own political base. Traditional hawks celebrate while the more isolationist "America First" wing sounds alarms about mission creep. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene didn't mince words: "Americans all over the world are seriously questioning if this is going to be World War Three." Meanwhile, former advisor Steve Bannon warned of a "bait and switch to please neocon warmongers." This internal struggle mirrors broader questions about America's proper role in Middle Eastern conflicts. The mainstream media's coverage has been particularly troubling. Networks provided almost exclusively pro-war perspectives, with supposed progressives like Van Jones joining neoconservatives in cheerleading military action. This propaganda machine eerily resembles the lead-up to previous Middle Eastern wars, raising the question: Have we learned nothing from our past interventions?Professor Jeffrey Sachs provides essential context by explaining that this moment represents the culmination of Netanyahu's "30-year mission to drag the United States into war with Iran." His analysis, paired with historical perspectives from voices like Noam Chomsky, offers a sobering counterpoint to the media's war drums. As tensions remain high, now is the time to engage critically with America's Middle East policy. What are the true costs of this escalation? And who stands to benefit? Follow the Darrell McLean Show for ongoing analysis that cuts through tribalism to find reasoned common ground. Support the show

Drawing on Pappè's powerful new books—Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic and A Very Short History of the Israel-Palestine Conflict, Sachs and Pappè discuss the historical, political, and ideological forces that have shaped the Zionist movement and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Together, they explore how lobbying networks in the UK and US have influenced the foreign policy of both countries, and the role of the UK and US in the Israel-Palestine conflict. They delve into the historical roots of Zionism, the legacy of British colonial rule in Mandatory Palestine, and the role of the US in the Israel-Palestine conflict from the adoption of the UN Partition Plan in 1947 until today. This episode offers listeners a deeper understanding of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine by delving into the historical processes that shaped the conflict during the past century and more. Columbia economics professor Jeffrey Sachs is now saying he is “99% sure” that the University of North Carolina (UNC) conducted extensive gain of function research beginning in 2015 and that this research led to the development of COVID-19. Sachs says he is concerned about unregulated research and the lack of global governance for handling dangerous pathogens. This systemic issue underscores the plausibility of an accidental release from a U.S. lab like UNC. Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss the compelling evidence supporting the conclusion that COVID came from Ralph Baric's research at UNC. Plus segments on Trump wiping out any DOGE savings with increased military spending and how U.S. tariffs are driving African countries to pursue closer ties with China and India. Also featuring Mike MacRae, Moussa Ibrahim and Stef Zamorano. And a phone call from Alec Baldwin!

In an extraordinary escalation of President Trump's rage at Harvard University, the administration just threatened to block Harvard from receiving foreign students if the university doesn't provide extensive information on students to the government. Trump also erupted at Harvard on Truth Social, making all kinds of other threats. On another front, GOP Senator Lisa Murkowski openly admitted to a sense of widespread terror of retaliation: “We are all afraid.” We talked to Jeffrey Sachs of Acadia University, a shrewd observer of authoritarianism. He walks us through the details of Trump's new threat toward Harvard, how it can be challenged, the true nature of Trump allies' long-term game plan, and whether our institutions will crumble in the face of it all.
