Taken on strength with the Royal Australian Navy between the wars and named for her sister ship who had sunk the German raider Emden during WW1, HMAS Sydney (II) gained fame as lucky ship during operations in the Mediterranean Theatre in World War 2. Involved in a number of actions in that theatre, including the sinking of the Bartolmeo Colleoni, while barely sustaining any damage herself, she came to be considered invincible. This reputation followed her into the waters off Western Australia and in action against a German raider, the Kormoran. The result would be the opposite of her sister ship's meeting with the Emden. Estos buques, equipados con armamento pesado y tripulados por marinos altamente capacitados, representaron una amenaza formidable para las fuerzas navales aliadas. It's been a long quest to solve an Australian military mystery, identifying a man, who for 80 years was the 'unknown' sailor. This is a case that had bugged the Royal Australian Navy for decades, trying to put a name to a World War Two crewman who was found to have initially surivived a fierce nautical fight battle off the coast of Western Australia in 1941 between the HMAS Sydney and a German warship. Both boats sank and it was thought that all the Australian crew died. But months after the ocean conflict, a life raft with the remains of an unidentified HMAS Sydney Crewman was found near Christmas Island. He was one of the 645 crew who died in what remains Australia's greatest naval disaster. No other bodies were recovered. But who was he? This is where DNA expert Dr Jeremy Austin from the University of Adelaide takes up the intriguing story.

Following news that there has been a positive DNA match made for the “Unknown Sailor”, the only sailor recovered from HMAS Sydney sunk off the West Australian coast with the loss of 645 lives during the Second World War, Michael speaks with Ian McPhedran, former national defence writer for News Limited & Author of ‘Where Soldiers Lie - The Quest to Find Australia's Missing War Dead', who has written extensively about the sinking of the HMAS Sydney.   The decomposed body of the ‘Unknown Sailor' was found in a Carley float at Christmas Island in February 1942, three months after the ship was lost.  The body was recovered from an unmarked grave on Christmas Island and re-buried at Geraldton in WA on the anniversary of the sinking on November 9 in 2008.   Over thirty five thousand Australian soldiers and airmen are still listed as Missing In Action from the wars of the 20th Century.   Mr McPhedran's book tells the moving story of the determination and skill of the searchers who apply old-fashioned detective work and cutting-edge science to solve the mysteries of the missing and bring peace of mind and solace to their families and to all those who serve. HMAS Perth (1) a cruiser of the same class as HMAS Sydney and commissioned into the RAN in 1939 was sunk by an overwhelming Japanese force in the Sunda Strait on 1st March 1942. USS Houston was also sunk.  More than half of the crew of 681 died in action. The survivors had to ensure appalling conditions on the Thai-Burma railway and some survived a second sinking in 1945, this time by American submarines who were unaware the transport ships carried POWs.  Some spent 6 days in the sea before being rescued.  Of the entire crew, only 1 in 3 returned to Australia. The HMAS Perth (1) Memorial Foundation has been established to raise funds to construct a memorial which will be located with the naval cadets training unit, TS Perth, in East Fremantle.  Their aim is to complete this in time for the 80th anniversary of the sinking. Mike Bailey, President of the HMAS Perth (1) Memorial Foundation told Harvey Deegan that it is time for a fitting permanent memorial to the ship and her crew. Governor Kim Beazley (their Patron) will be officially opening an exhibit at the Perth Town Hall on 27th February.  For more information go to www.hmasperth1memorial.com.au See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
