The Niu, or coconut palm, Cocos nucifera L., is our beloved Hawaiian coconut!  Stately beacons, especially at the seashore.  The niu's slender ringed trunk ascends to a crown of fronds, some up to 9 feet long. Coconuts form at the base of the fronds, and every part of the plant is used, it's one  of the ten most useful plant species in the world. A list of the district codes is available on the RSGB Contest Committee website via rsgbcc.org.   Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 7th of November. We had another week of high solar flux and good conditions on HF. Solar activity remained at high levels thanks to an impulsive X2.3 solar flare around active region 3883 at 13:40 UTC on the 6th of November, but the event was not responsible for a coronal mass ejection (CME). The Kp index remained below 4.5 all week, with a solar flux index in the range of 240-260. That was more than enough to keep the ionosphere very active. A recent report on spaceweather.com  suggested that the solar cycle may have peaked in the Sun's southern hemisphere but may still have a way to go in its northern hemisphere. It's usual for there to be two peaks in a solar cycle as the two hemispheres are seldom synchronised. We will have to wait and see, but it could mean another three to six months of high SFI numbers as the northern hemisphere catches up. A solar filament located in the southwest quadrant erupted on the 7th of November. A coronal mass ejection, or CME as it is also known, occurred but appeared to be off the Sun-Earth line, so no major impacts are expected. A sunspot group turning into view from off the southeastern limb has been assigned active region 3889 and is producing M-class solar flares. The probability of further M-class flares stands at 80%. Meanwhile, the risk of an X-class flare currently stands at 35%. A coronal hole is currently Earth-facing and could cause some disruption sometime around Saturday 9th. The solar proton flux has decreased to normal levels, so polar paths should now be unaffected. Next week, NOAA predicts that the SFI could decline into the range of 165-185. Geomagnetic disturbances are forecast for the 11th and 12th, and again on the 15th, with the Kp index predicted to reach four. Meanwhile, we do urge you to get on 10 metres, which is currently experiencing some fine DX openings. This month and next will probably give the best chance of good 10-metre propagation for a while.  And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO Another week has just passed with daily F2-layer propagation on 50MHz providing morning openings to Southeast Asia, and the Americas in the afternoon. Expect more in the coming week.  The current spell of high pressure has had a good run with some excellent Tropo conditions, with the best DX along the side of the high pressure. This weekend will see the high finally giving way as weak Atlantic fronts move in from the west. This will soon be replaced by a new high building in the colder air behind the weekend fronts. It may look like Tropo should come back, but this high may be less productive. The major change of weather pattern comes before mid-week, when it may turn more unsettled as low pressure moves closer to eastern areas from the North Sea. This general move towards more unsettled conditions will continue through the end of the week. In terms of propagation, good Tropo will be replaced by some patchy rain scatter opportunities for the GHz bands from about the middle of next week. Staying with scatter modes, meteor scatter looks promising with the Taurids peaking on Tuesday the 12th and the Leonids due to peak on the following weekend on Sunday the 17th. The solar conditions continue to offer chance occurrences of aurora due to solar flares or CMEs so, as usual, keep a watch on the Kp index going above Kp=4. An occasional reminder of the possibility of out-of-season Es for the digital modes is timely. Recently the critical frequency of the Es layer has reached 7MHz on the Dourbes ionosonde plotted on www.propquest.co.uk  and in theory, this would be good enough for a 6m band path. For EME operators, Moon declination is negative but rising, going positive again on Tuesday the 12th. Path losses are falling as we approach perigee next Thursday the 14th. 144MHz sky noise is moderate to low this coming week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

No podemos predecirlo", enfatizó Espíndola. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 35 – The Republic and Relations With The Tribes Before I get started, I want to introduce y'all to a set of books called ‘the Music is Murder saga'. These novels by Heather O'Brien, follow the lives and loves of the O'Conners, the Grants, and the Lockhardts. Something—or someone—ties these three families together and you'll be caught up in the drama of their situations. The books are set in the world of Rock ‘n' roll and you'll be hooked from page one. The 1st book you'll want is Lockhardt Sound, and as someone who has worked in the music industry, let me tell you, the story could and does happen. Check out her site, booksbyheather.com, you won't be disappointed. As her site says, long live rock ‘n' roll. When I wrapped up the last episode, I had begun talking about how Republic President Sam Houston had wanted to establish better relationships with the Indians of Texas. Today I'm going to dive deeper into that whole concept and try to get a better understanding of the relationship between the Anglos and the Native tribes. It was very messy, and it became very bloody. Again, I have to bring up the thought, that based on the morality of today, what happened back then is today considered genocide. I'm not going to try and justify what took place. It doesn't do any good to get angry over the actions that took place, it might serve as a warning of what can, and in many places, still does happen to others. Before I go into the relationships in 1836 and beyond, I want to go back over some of the history of the native people prior to this time. Remember, how in early episodes I talked about how when the Spanish arrived in Texas there were multiple groups or tribes of indigenous people in all parts of Texas. Now I'm not going to go back 10,000 years ago and talk about the Clovis people, there are several excellent books out there that discuss the people and how they evolved, and it does make for fascinating reading. I want to start with those who were here when the first Spanish explorers bumped into Texas. November 6, 1528, is the day when the lives of the native peoples of what is now Texas began to change, and not for the better. That was the day when the Karankawas met Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and the remnants of his crew on Galveston Island. At that time, the Karankawas were one of many tribes or bands of native people who lived in Texas. The Karankawas were a hunter gatherer group who lived mostly on the Texas coast. They were hunter-gatherers, and they necessarily lived a somewhat nomadic life because they had to travel to find food. There were approximately 5 bands that are historically associated with them, one such group were the Cocos who lived the furthest east between Galveston Island and the Colorado River. They were the group that de Vaca's band of survivors lived with. And that proved to be a disaster for the Cocos, because Cholera hit and killed nearly half of their band. These groups were the first to encounter the Spanish and the first to suffer from those encounters. The native people's simply were not equipped to handle the germs and diseases that the Europeans brought with them. Another group that suffered from their encounter with the Europeans where the Caddos.  Around 1500, the Caddos had already built a complex political system that consisted of alliances between different bands and tribes. In addition to their lands in Texas, they  were also located in the Great Plains, Eastern Woodlands, and present-day Arizona and New Mexico. They had built extensive trading networks where they exported salt, pottery, and wood for making bows, and they imported seashells, copper, and flint. It was natural that once the French and Spanish merchants arrived in Texas and the surrounding areas, that the Caddo's would trade with them as well and that began their downfall. As with the Karankawas the Europeans brought new diseases that had devastated the people.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Max Pam is an Australian photographer born in 1949 in suburban Melbourne, which as a teenager he found to be grim, oppressive and culturally isolated. He found refuge in the counter-culture of surfing and the imagery of National Geographic and Surfer Magazine and became determined to travel overseas.Max left Australia at 20, after accepting a job as a photographer assisting an astrophysicist. Together, the pair drove a VW Beetle from Calcutta to London. This adventure proved inspirational, and travel has remained a crucial and continuous link to his creative and personal development. As Gary Dufour noted in his essay in Indian Ocean Journals (Steidl, 2000): “Each photograph is shaped by incidents experienced as a traveller. His photographs extend upon the tradition of the gazetteer; each photograph a record of an experience, a personal account of an encounter somewhere in the world. Each glimpse is part of an unfolding story rather than simply a record of a place observed. While travel underscores his production Pam's photographs are not the accidental evidence of a tourist.”Max's work takes the viewer on compelling journeys around the globe, recording observations with an often surrealist intensity, matching the heightened sensory awareness of foreign travel. The work frequently implies an interior, psychic journey, corresponding with the physical journey of travel. His work in Asian counties is well represented in publications as are his travels in Europe, Australia, and the Indian Ocean Rim cultures including India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Yemen, The Republic of Tanzania, Mauritius, Madagascar, the Cocos and Christmas Islands. The images leave the viewer, as Tim Winton said in Going East (Marval 1992), “grateful for having been taken so mysteriously by surprise and so far and sweetly abroad.”Max's first survey show was held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 1986, and was followed by a mid-career retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1991. He was also the subject of a major exhibition at the Comptoir de la Photographie, Paris in 1990, which covered the work of three decades. He has published several highly acclaimed photographic monographs and 'carnets de voyage', including Going East: Twenty Years of Asian Photography (1992), Max Pam (1999), Ethiopia (1999) and Indian Ocean Journals (2000). Going East won Europe's major photo book award the Grand Prix du Livre Photographique in 1992. In the same year Max held his largest solo show to date at the Sogo Nara Museum of Art, Nara. He has published work in the leading international journals and is represented in major public and private collections in Australia, Great Britain, France and Japan. In episode 217 Max discusses, among other things:How he adopted the visual diary as his photographic approach. The influence of Diane Arbus. Why he chose such a specific period of his life to explore in his new memoir. How Arbus inspired him to shoot 6x6.How surfing in Australia introduced him travelling. How he ended up in India and why it fascinates him.The magic of film vs. digital.Working with book designers… or not.The time he failed to get into Magnum Photos.Surviving financially, teaching, and the importance of ‘marrying up'.Travel and family.Returning to Australia in a poor mental state, post typhoid. His wife's Alzheimer's and eventual death.Referenced:Philip Jones-GriffithDon McCullenLarry BurrowsDavid BaileyDiane ArbusEdward WestonTina ModottiRoger BallenGeorge OrwellBernard PlossuRamon PezSarah MoonOne Flew Over The Cuckoos NestPeter Beard Website | Instagram“I'm a very curious person and ultimately having the camera amplifies that curiosity in a really profound way. Banking giant UBS is in discussions to take over all or parts of Credit Suisse, with the boards of Switzerland's two biggest lenders set to meet separately over the weekend. The Swiss National Bank and regulator FINMA are organising the talks in an attempt to build confidence in the country's banking sector. On Friday evening, Swiss regulators informed their counterparts in the United States and United Kingdom that the merger of the two banks was their "Plan A" to salvage the confidence in Credit Suisse. Several other options are also under discussion between the two banks as both sides try to evaluate regulatory constraints in different jurisdictions. In this episode of The Higher Standard, Chris and Saied examine this news and determine the effect it will have on the economy as a whole. They discuss an 85-year long study by Harvard researchers indicating that, while particular roles can't be reliably correlated with dissatisfaction and burnout, certain job characteristics can be. Jobs that require little human interaction and don't offer opportunities to build meaningful relationships with co-workers tend to have the most miserable employees, the study found.Chris and Saied look at news that Bitcoin has climbed to a nine-month high as turmoil in the banking sector drives some investors to turn to digital assets. It rose as far as $28,567, its highest since mid-June, and was last up 0.9%, amid growing expectations that central banks would slow the pace of interest rate hikes. They also offer some thoughts on contingent convertible bonds, or CoCos, often described as high-yield investments with a hand grenade attached. The UBS takeover of Credit Suisse has pulled the pin on $17 billion of them.Join Chris and Saied for this fascinating and informative conversation.Enjoy! What You'll Learn in this Show:What's happened at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on Tuesday. Why Switzerland is known for having low levels of financial risk and high levels of privacy. Why the axing of Credit Suisse's $17 billion contingent convertible (CoCo) debt has big implications for the newly combined bank and the wider market.Bitcoin's climb to a nine-month high as turmoil in the banking sector sparks a rally. And so much more...Resources:Markets and Mayhem via Twitter"UBS in talks to acquire Credit Suisse" (article from The Financial Times)Ulrich Körner via Wikipedia"UBS buys Credit Suisse for $3.2 billion as regulators look to shore up the global banking system" (article from CNBC)"UBS Agrees to Buy Credit Suisse for More Than $3 Billion" (article from The Wall Street Journal)"Big Banks Best Positioned to Weather Crisis: Morningstar" (article from The Street)"Credit Suisse's $17...

We've been off-piste for a while now so we thought we'd jump straight back into the deep sea with a series of episodes on deep-sea habitats. We're starting off strong with a huge episode on seamounts! We speak to a friend of the show, Ashley Rowden who's an expert in all-things benthic and we find out why seamounts are just so cool. We also get a little distracted and reminisce about the ultimate offshore championship: sausage-fest.  We get to hear from the scientists on board the RRS Discovery who are currently on an expedition to discover the life that exists on the seamounts surrounding St Helena and the Ascension Islands. A couple of our friends on board also recall their ‘crossing the line' experience, and how they're finding working on board a research vessel. We have huge news!
