„S bráchou nás vychovával k poctivosti a pravdomluvnosti. S empatií a nadhledem mluví i o tom, proč nerad odsuzuje lidi.

In 1941, in the midst of the North Africa Campaign, the British found themselves on the ropes.  Under General Erwin Rommel's leadership, the German advance threatened Cairo and the Suez Canal.  The one thing that was stopping the Germans was that the British still held the strategic port city of Tobruk in Libya.  For over half a year, the Germans laid siege to the city, and the British tried to relieve it. VICCTORY PLAN UNWELCOMED: : 4/8: The Russo-Ukrainian War: The Return of History. by  Serhii Plokhy  (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Russo-Ukrainian-War-Return-History/dp/1324051191 Despite repeated warnings from the White House, Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shocked the world. Why did Putin start the war―and why has it unfolded in previously unimaginable ways? Ukrainians have resisted a superior military; the West has united, while Russia grows increasingly isolated. Serhii Plokhy, a leading historian of Ukraine and the Cold War, offers a definitive account of this conflict, its origins, course, and the already apparent and possible future consequences. Though the current war began eight years before the all-out assault―on February 27, 2014, when Russian armed forces seized the building of the Crimean parliament―the roots of this conflict can be traced back even earlier, to post-Soviet tensions and imperial collapse in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Providing a broad historical context and an examination of Ukraine and Russia's ideas and cultures, as well as domestic and international politics, Plokhy reveals that while this new Cold War was not inevitable, it was predictable. Ukraine, Plokhy argues, has remained central to Russia's idea of itself even as Ukrainians have followed a radically different path. In a new international environment defined by the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the disintegration of the post–Cold War international order, and a resurgence of populist nationalism, Ukraine is now more than ever the most volatile fault line between authoritarianism and democratic Europe. 1942 TOBRUK

Join Craig and Gaurav as they cover Operation Crusader, the British counter offensive to relieve the seige of Tobruk. Upon arriving in North Africa, Lt. General Erwin Rommel launched Operation Sonnenblume, transforming the campaign. His German Panzers ended the dominance of the British Matilda tanks and laid siege to Tobruk. British General Archibald Wavell's attempts to lift the siege failed, prompting his eventual replacement by General Sir Claude Auchinleck. Auchinleck prepared for Operation Crusader, aiming to break the siege of Tobruk with a well-coordinated attack involving the 8th Army. Despite Rommel's initial successes, Tobruk remained a critical Allied holdout, crucial for supply lines. The Axis, facing harassment from the Royal Navy and the Desert Air Force, struggled to supply their forces over long, vulnerable routes. Seizing Tobruk was vital for the Axis to advance into Egypt. Auchinleck's plan for Operation Crusader involved a multi-pronged offensive. On November 18, 1941, the 8th Army launched a surprise attack. Initial successes included capturing Axis airfields and engaging Italian divisions. However, Rommel's counterattacks led to heavy losses on both sides. The Allied breakout from Tobruk saw fierce fighting but struggled to maintain momentum due to dispersed tank units. Rommel, seizing the opportunity, planned a counter-offensive, Operation Brandung. Despite initial Axis gains, Allied forces managed to disrupt supply lines and isolate Axis positions. The battle swung back and forth with significant losses on both sides. Ultimately, Rommel's forces were overstretched and forced to withdraw from Tobruk by December. By December 10, Tobruk was relieved, and Rommel's forces retreated to form a new defensive line. Although the Axis avoided encirclement, they suffered heavy casualties and material losses. The Allies, despite their incomplete victory, had lifted the immediate threat to Egypt, marking a significant turning point in the North African campaign.

L'Italia è appena entrata in guerra. Antonella Sbuelz vive a Udine, dove è nata. Alex Lloyd introduces the WWII video documentary FOR SCHOOL AND COUNTRY, coming to YouTube over the next five weeks. FOR SCHOOL AND COUNTRY is a five-part video documentary miniseries, created by us, Thistle Productions. The series chronicles the lives and service of twelve WWII veterans who went to school together and took up arms when war broke out. This production was originally released on DVD in 2015 - the first ‘Thistle Productions' project - and it is finally available for free via streaming. These dozen veterans served across the whole theatre of war. At sea they fought the Bismarck and the Admiral Graf Spee, and sailed in the Mediterranean Fleet and the Pacific Fleet, including at the largest naval engagement of the war. On land they fought at Tobruk, El Alamein and Tarakan; and they trekked through the jungles of New Guinea and landed on the beaches of Balikpapan. And in the sky they flew over Europe for Bomber Command, over the Middle East for the Desert Air Force, and with the Forgotten Army in Burma. Many had narrow escapes, including one sole survivor when his bomber crashed in enemy territory. Tobruk was one of the greatest Allied victories – and one of the worst Allied defeats – of the Second World War. Almost from the start of producing the podcast I've wanted to do an episode looking at Tobruk. I think it probably first gets a mention in episode 11 when we looked at Richard O'Connor, since then the town has come up in numerous episodes. I'm joined by David Mitchellhill Green David is the author of Tobruk: Rommel and the Battles Leading to his greatest victory. It is a fascinating read which places Tobruk in a wider history to help explain why it was strategically important. Patreon: patreon.com/WW2podcast
