April 1945 in Kiel.

Aerial mining by RAF Bomber Command played a crucial role in the Allied war effort, sinking far more Axis shipping than direct attacks by either Coastal Command or Bomber Command itself. Minelaying operations began in April 1940 and expanded significantly throughout the war, yet today, this critical campaign—along with its impact on Axis merchant vessels, Kriegsmarine warships, and U-boats—remains largely overlooked. Joining me today is Jane Gulliford Lowes, author of The Invisible Campaign: Assessing Bomber Command's Minelaying Operations 1940-1945. We explore the RAF's minelaying efforts during the war, their strategic importance, and why they've been so often forgotten.

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this Echoes of War Podcast, Craig and Gaurav explain who were the Best and Worst Admiral of WW2 In a discussion about the naval commanders of World War II, the hosts delve into the contrasting legacies of various admirals. They highlight Admiral Max H. Donitz of the Kriegsmarine as a pragmatic leader who understood the importance of supplies in warfare. Despite his strategic insights, he faced challenges with limited resources and the early setbacks of his U-boat fleet. Conversely, Admiral Sir Dudley Pound of the Royal Navy is critiqued for his outdated tactics and inability to adapt to new technologies. His leadership during critical moments, such as the disastrous Convoy PQ 17, where poor intelligence led to significant losses, tarnished his reputation. Pound's reliance on Churchill and his failure to support his commanders further diminished his effectiveness. The discussion also touches on Eric Raeder, the first commander-in-chief of the Kriegsmarine, who is deemed the worst due to his doctrinal failures and inability to secure necessary resources for the navy. His ambitious plans, like Plan Z, were unrealistic and ultimately futile. As the conversation wraps up, the hosts reflect on the complexities of leadership during the war, acknowledging that while some admirals achieved notable successes, others faltered under pressure, leaving lasting impacts on their respective navies and the war's outcome. They conclude by teasing an upcoming episode focused on the air commanders of World War II, promising to explore the often-overlooked figures in aerial warfare.
Jane is flying solo again this week so this is quite a short one!In this episode she discusses the Norwegian campaign from April to June 1940, which is often overlooked in the history of Bomber Command and World War II.Bomber Command's role in the campaign included bombing German air bases, attacking Kriegsmarine shipping, and mine laying. However, the operations were hampered by limited resources, inexperienced crews, and challenging terrain. The bombing raids were largely ineffective, and losses were high. The Norwegian campaign ended in failure, leading to the evacuation of Allied troops. The episode highlights the challenges faced by Bomber Command and sets the stage for the upcoming Battle of Britain.Further reading:The Bomber Command War Diaries, by Martin Middlebrook and Chris EverittEnemy Coast Ahead, by Guy GibsonThe German Invasion of Norway, by Geir HaarAnatomy of a Campaign: The British Fiasco in Norway, 1940 by John KiszelyNorway in the Second World War: Politics Society and Conflict, by Ole Kristian Grimnes Send us a textSupport the Show. Please subscribe to Never Mind The Dambusters wherever you get your podcasts. Bomber Command's role in the campaign included bombing German air bases, attacking Kriegsmarine shipping, and mine laying. However, the operations were hampered by limited resources, inexperienced crews, and challenging terrain. The bombing raids were largely ineffective, and losses were high. The Norwegian campaign ended in failure, leading to the evacuation of Allied troops. The episode highlights the challenges faced by Bomber Command and sets the stage for the upcoming Battle of Britain.Further reading: The Bomber Command War Diaries, by Martin Middlebrook and Chris EverittEnemy Coast Ahead, by Guy GibsonThe German Invasion of Norway, by Geir HaarAnatomy of a Campaign: The British Fiasco in Norway, 1940 by John KiszelyNorway in the Second World War: Politics Society and Conflict, by Ole Kristian Grimnes Send us a textPlease subscribe to Never Mind The Dambusters wherever you get your podcasts.
Just two days before D-Day, Captain Gallery's US antisubmarine Task Group 22.3 managed to force the German U-boat U-505 to the surface. In a bold move, a boarding party secured the submarine before it could be scuttled, capturing an Enigma machine and the current Kriegsmarine code books. This remarkable operation earned Lieutenant Albert David the Medal of Honor for his leadership. However, it could have had catastrophic consequences. If the Germans had suspected that their cyphers were compromised, it might have jeopardised the Allied operation Ultra, which was already deciphering German signals. The Chief of US Naval Operations, Ernest King, was so incensed about the capture of U-505 that he threatened to fire Admiral Gallery. Joining me to discuss this operation is Charles Lachman, author of Codename Nemo: The Hunt for a Nazi U-Boat and the Elusive Enigma Machine. *** Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/HistoireEtCivilisationsMag Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/histoireetcivilisations/ Twitter : https://twitter.com/Storiavoce
In 1941 sailors from a German merchant raider HSK Kormoran came ashore at Red Bluff, Western Australia following a battle with the Australian Cruiser HMAS Sydney. Before they reached the beach they disposed of any items which could complicate their capture. This episode recounts a unique 2007 discovery at Red Bluff and the key events of the engagement between Sydney and Kormoran.

The convoy HG-76 sailed from Gibraltar to Britain in December 1941. The Royal Navy commander in charge was 'Johnnie' Walker, an anti-submarine expert who had developed new, aggressive U-boat hunting tactics. Accompanying the escorts was HMS Audacity, the Royal Navy's first escort carrier - a new type of warship purpose-built to defend convoys from enemy aircraft and U-boats. Aware of the departure of HG-76, a wolfpack of U-boats was sent against it, and the Luftwaffe was heavily committed to, in a rare example of German inter-service cooperation. German intelligence agents in Gibraltar and Spain also knew every detail of HG-76 before it sailed, seemingly stacking the odds in favour of the Kriegsmarine. The unexpected alliance between Germany and the Soviet Union helped a Kriegsmarine raider wreak havoc in the South Seas.
The War for England's Shores: S-Boats and the Fight Against British Coastal Convoys (US Naval Institute Press, 2023) by Dr. G. H. Bennett examines the Kriegsmarine's S-Boat offensive along the English Channel and the North Sea from 1940 to 1945, together with British and, later, Allied responses to nullify that threat. Very fast, and armed with torpedoes and mines, S-Boats posed a serious threat to the convoys that were forced to run close along the British coast on a daily basis. Despite the significance of this campaign and the real threat to the whole British war economy, it has been, until now, strangely overlooked by historians. Indeed, the book highlights issues around the maritime identity of those states and navies that see themselves in oceanic terms, at the expense of engagement with, and operations in, coastal waters. Using an array of archival materials from Britain, Germany and the USA, The War for England's Shores examines why the Germans failed to make the most of this opportunity to disrupt British trade. G. H. Bennett analyses how the British slowly countered the threat by embracing new technologies and developing a system of sea control that gradually forced the German S-Boat arm from the offensive against Britain's coastal convoys, and on to the defensive in the months leading up to the invasion of France. The author also looks at the S-Boat campaign along these convoy routes in the context of present-day interest in littoral warfare, so that the work has a vital and current appeal and offers significant and surprising insights. The book offers an unparalleled exploration of a key moment in the development of coastal warfare, and will appeal to historians and enthusiasts as well as defence analysts and naval personnel. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. USS MOSLEY DE-321 is an example of courage, determination, and tactical excellence that is evident in the fact that she earned two battle stars for her World War II service. She was one of the first DEs in a hunter killer group manned by Coast Guardsmen. She played a considerable part in the crumbling of the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. She battled enemies from the sea and skies, and proved Destroyer Escorts unbeatable in convoy protection. Follow along with our transcript and check out the photos on our website. Hitler's relationship with his navy is one of the most intriguing topics of the naval history of the Second World War. Hitler was the Commander-in-Chief of all German armed forces - including the Kriegsmarine - and yet he was a man with no experience or understanding of seapower. The result was a strange and fractious relationship with his navy which was ill equipped, poorly manned and, more importantly poorly understood by the Nazi leadership. The relationship soured to such an extent that, in 1942 after an Allied convoy successfully made it to Russia in the dead of winter, Hitler publicly and furiously denounced the navy and demanded that all heavy German warships should be scrapped. This relationship presents a fascinating conundrum at the very heart of the otherwise formidable Nazi war machine and to consider it helps us understand the broader role of the impact of seapower on the course and ultimate outcome of the Second World War, and it also helps us understand Hitler as a man and as a political and military leader. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Hitler biographer Professor Frank McDonough. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
