If you have yet to read guest Mira Jacob's 2019 memoir in conversations, Good Talk, we're jealous. Praised for her “disarming wit,” Jacob achieves this by welcoming you into her indecision, her confusion, her wonder at raising a child against the backdrop of that tender point where politics meets the personal in 2016 America. In addition to it being hilariously funny and a master class in dialogue writing, the turn of Good Talk (and for that matter her exquisite novel The Sleepwalker's Guide to Dancing), is that she doesn't flatten the world to make sense of it — she complicates it. She explains the stuff she knows, as well as the stuff she doesn't know, about a world we think we know but don't really. Before long, you're laughing, crying, and struggling to figure it out right along with her. In a talk she gave to young women writers at the NYC non-profit “Girls Write Now,” Jacob said that early on she didn't know why she wanted to be a writer, she just wanted to make words that made worlds. In the podcast, we talk about how Jacob taught herself how to draw for Good Talk, her publishing journey in an industry that still caters to an imaginary white audience, discussing race with people you love, and the importance of maintaining curiosity as a parent. For the rich conversations that come out of the worlds she has wrought, we are so lucky. In this episode, Betsy and Tony chat with Kim Moceri, Operating Partner at Francisco Partners. Kim starts off by explaining her career path, which includes taking a tactical support organization to a consultative business focused on the customers' outcomes. In Kim's current role, she is responsible for getting her 50-60 portfolio companies to understand the impact of strategic customer success. To get to the core, each company's focus must be top-down and outside-in. Lastly, Kim focuses on the difference between customer success (i.e., realizing business outcomes) and account management (tactical aspects, such as customer renewals).

Oftentimes on the podcast, I talk about the changes that are happening in the industry and particularly the ever-evolving business models. In the United States, the Salon Suite or Studio as some prefer to call it has had a massive impact on hairdressing and how hairdressers work and that model is influencing salons in many countries. The biggest operator of salon suites is Sola Salon Suites and their very first suite operator was Kim Bennet and so it’s a real pleasure to have Kim as my guest today and get a really good insight into how having a salon suite works from someone who has been doing it for 17 years. In today’s podcast we discuss: The salon suite business model Who is and isn’t suited to opening a salon suite/studio of their own What are the advantages and disadvantages And lots more! In This Episode: [01:45] Welcome to the show, Kim! [02:25] Kim shares her background. [03:21] Kim speaks about how she got started with Sola Salon Studios. [05:18] Did the salon suite model exist when you first got started? [07:41] Kim discusses the founders of Sola Salon Studios. [10:04] Kim shares the Sola business model. [11:00] Antony talks about why the salon suite model isn't for him. [13:19] Kim shares why the salon suite works for her. [16:33] Kim discusses wanting to give her clients a better experience, and to do that, she wanted the studio model. [19:46] Kim speaks about evolving over the years and how her business evolved with her. [22:59] Were there any challenges that stood out to you since you were new to the salon suite model? [26:34] Kim shares how Sola stylists handle their guest's arrivals because they don't have receptionists. [29:18] Kim discusses the matrix on how many studio suite stylists decided they didn't like the business model. [31:16] In Kim's experience, when she saw people leave Sola, they were usually becoming salon owners. [34:03] Listen as Kim speaks about who might not be a great studio suite owner. [37:31] Kim says that competition between suites around pricing isn't something that happens at Sola. [39:57] Do you get walk-ins with the studio suite model? [41:10] Kim talks about what she misses about the traditional salon model. [43:38] Kim discusses what clients have told her about missing the traditional salon experience. [45:55] When it comes to retail, some don't want the hassle of it, and others see the benefits and profits from selling products. [48:03] What is the average cost of a studio suite? [53:07] The most important business model is the one that works best for you. [57:10] Kim says that social media is huge in the salon suite entrepreneurial mindset. [1:01:20] Kim discusses the age-old challenge of stylists taking their clients with them when they leave. [1:04:16] Who is training the new generation of hairstylists? [1:06:59] Thank you so much for being on the show! Links and Resources Grow My Salon Business Kim Bennett Kim Bennett Studios @kimi_kisses Instagram | Facebook

If you’ve survived sorrow, have felt the pain of grief and know what it’s like to lose something: a dream, a loved one, etc., this episode is for you. Kim Erickson joins us in today’s episode to chat through practical ways to survive sorrow, seek God in the middle of it, and move urgently in obedience through the grieving process. Kim speaks to the one that hopes to share their story of sorrow, how to share it well, and what it looked like for her to get to the place that she is today.I’ll leave the specifics up to Kim to share with us, but what you need to know is that Kim met the Lord after the sudden death of her young son in 2008. Her testimony is beautiful, and speaks of how God met her in a place of deep grief and sorrow that unfortunately way too many parents understand. In Kim’s story, her experience allowed her to see God with a new perspective, and now, she’s following Him faithfully and sharing her story to help others struggling with grief find hope and light in the middle of it. When Kim’s was first finding her own way through her grief, she found plenty of resources for grieving. She says what she really needed, though, "was someone who would give me advice for living, not just grieving . . . How do I get through the grocery store without crying? What do I do with my son’s things? When will my mind stop replaying the emergency room scene?"Those questions caused her to dive into the Bible, and now, ten years from that moment, she has written a book, Surviving Sorrow, that is blessing so many people. I’m so excited and can’t wait for you to hear this conversation - let’s jump in.Here are some things we mention in this episode:Kim's Book / Surviving Sorrow: A Mother's Guide to Living with Loss Be sure to stay up to date with Abundant Life: You Were Made for More by visiting our blog - and if you're loving the podcast, send guest recommendations to us or leave us a star-rating/review on your favorite listening platform to spread the word about the you were made for more message. You Were Made for More Social Media: FacebookTwitterInstagram

Is there room in the marketplace today for entrepreneurs who are interested in product development and creating their own inventions? From idea to development Where does the idea to create something completely new come from? The truth is, most inventions come from an idea to address a common problem. In Kim’s case - she came up with the idea for the Click & Carry because she was sick of taking multiple trips to the car to unload her groceries. Too often we believe the lie that you have to be a super-genius to come up with a great idea like the Click & Carry. Kim is a smart and savvy businesswoman who took a risk and put herself out there. Sellers like you can follow in Kim’s footsteps! Learn more about Kim’s story and how the product development process played out by listening to this episode - you don’t want to miss it! Spreading the word Once Kim took her product from the idea stage to the development stage, the next big hurdle arose - getting the word out. While it’s fairly easy to promote a product everyone knows about like a fishing rod or a cutting board - a new product that never existed before is a tough sell! How would you go about spreading the word for a new product you invented? As you can imagine - Kim’s road to spreading the word wasn’t easy - there was no roadmap for her to follow. Through trial and error, Kim made her way with the Click & Carry to local trade shows and farmers markets until she caught her big break with QVC. You can catch the clip of Kim getting featured on “Bethenny” in the resources section at the end of this post. Appearing on The 5 Minute Pitch Kim had been avoiding anything Amazon related for a while when a friend had suggested that she enter the 5 Minute Pitch competition. The 5 Minute Pitch is a show where 32 bootstrapped companies are selected to pitch Greg Mercer, Scott Voelker, Steve Chou, and Mike Jackess, along with a weekly guest judge for the chance to win $50,000. Not only did Kim get a chance to pitch her idea on The 5 Minute Pitch but she was also selected as the first season winner! Of course, Kim was thrilled to win the $50,000 to invest in her business, but the big win - according to Kim - is the opportunity to get coaching from the judges. Tune into this episode of Maximizing Ecommerce to learn more about Kim’s experience on The 5 Minute Pitch! Branching out Now that she has the likes of Greg Mercer, Scott Voelker, Steve Chou, and Mike Jackess whispering in her ear - Kim is rethinking her approach to ecommerce. She had heard that Amazon was not a good option for inventors to feature their products because of the risk of copycats - she’s since received more accurate advice. While the risk is there - Amazon is still one of the best platforms to grow your brand and grow your following. If you are ready to invest in your ideas and break out of the typical career trajectory - listen to this episode to hear Kim’s inspiring story of product development and ecommerce success! To all the moms out there: I appreciate, respect, and cherish you! It is through you that I found inspiration to launch my monthly podcast Moms With Passion And Purpose, as an extention of my current All About You podcast. Meet Kimberly Dawn. She is one of those women in my community that many look to for inspiration. Kim exemplifies a woman with passion. She finds drive in her music while leading a purposeful life in our community of Westlake Village, California. She is constantly looking out for others; whether it be participating in charity work with Casa Pacifica, lending a helping hand in school functions, or offering support for members of our community. Kim always leaves a lasting impression with her generous heart. She is a loving wife, incredible mother, and an extraordinarily devoted friend to her tribe of women. In this episode, Kim shares how she manages to find time in her busy, often chaotic life to stay true to her passion of being a songstress. If you want to know how she does it all: writing, performing, traveling, and manifesting a life that we all might be a little envious of, she lays it all out on the table in All About You. When I first got a peek into her sacred, creative space, it opened up a new level of fascination in me. If you get a glimpse in her closet, you’re likely to feel that way too. In Kim’s words, she lives in her “Barbie dream mansion” that she manifested as a little girl. We can all learn how to have more balance in our lives with grace and ease and Kimberly Dawn has mastered that skill. It was such a pleasure and so much fun to spend time in her beautiful home, recording study and dreamy closet. We both have four kids and are on a mission to help others. I adore this beautiful woman and I know you will too.

In today's episode, host Kristin Kalbli interviews Kimberly Brooks Mazella, a straight spouse whose career as a psychotherapist has lead to the founding of her non-profit, the Straight Forward Project. Kim discusses the results of her survey research on Straight Spouses, and how her data, which sheds light onto the straight spouse experience, could eventually be used to help straight spouse heal. In Kim’s own words: “A person has to be able to hold two competing truths at the same time: on the one hand it is wonderful that our spouses have come out, and if they’re living authentic lives and they’re happy and they’re in relationships - we want that for everybody; we all deserve to live authentic lives. Andthe deceit and the damage that is done to unsuspecting spouses who are married to closeted LGBT folks is real, and it is valid, and it is true. And both of those things co-exist.”

*This conversation may include opinions of family law but it should not be considered legal advice. Special Passages “Happiness comes more from loving than being loved, and often when our affection seems wounded it is only our vanity bleeding. To love, and to be hurt often, and to love again — this is the brave and happy life.” - by J.E. Buckrose “Do you want me to tell you something really subversive? Love is everything it's cracked up to be. That's why people are so cynical about it. It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don't risk anything, you risk even more.” - from The Fear of Flying by Erica Jong Crossing Relationship Borders Kim Bell has crossed many borders in her life. She is an Australian who is married to an American she met while in the Philippines and who currently lives in Canada. Both of her husbands, previous and current, had children before she married them. She doesn’t have any offspring. This in combination with her being a Senior Attorney gives her a unique perspective when discussing love, marriage, divorce, the law and more love. There is a history and a dynamic that exists between a parent and a child, which affects a parent’s new relationship with someone else. Four months after Kim started dating PJ, she made it clear to his daughter that she didn’t intend to take the place of her mother but she would be there for her whenever she needed to talk and she also made it clear to the mother that she would never try to replace her. This allowed for a free and open relationship to grow amongst them all. The Good Thing about Getting Older It takes time for women to figure out who they are, what is important to them and most importantly what they decide they will no longer accept in their lives. Once we are well into our 40’s we know ourselves better and we are finally settling into being happy with who we are. In Kim’s own words, “It’s beneficial to learn lessons the hard way because that way we don’t have to learn the same lesson twice” and “This is another precious day in your life you will never get back again. Love yourself and love the people around you. Life is a gift.” It’s important to take time between relationships to figure things out. If you spend some time alone to get the rest of your life in order, it really helps you to love someone because you love them not because you need them. It’s Called Legalese But Ain’t Legal Easy Want to know what’s a hard thing to do? Talking with your fiancé about individual assets before you even get married, but it needs to be done. It needs to be out in the open a few months before you tie the knot. It doesn’t have to be a prenuptial agreement but you should at least have a will in place in case of an emergency. Wills are described as living documents because they can be changed when life changes. Legal documents offer protection for spouses and children alike. Dividing up assets does not have to be confrontational. Money should be the last reason you stay in a marriage you are not happy in. It’s a recipe for being miserable. I met Kim in the Philippines at Chris Ducker’s Tropical Think Tank. We met fellow creatives and lifelong friends there. Jim has shipped people microphones like the Audio Technica 2100 to ensure you have quality. In Kim's case she tried to connect is skype and her guest was using Skype on his phone. Her solution was to have her guest on wi-fi and connect via skype on their phone. (the guest was not technical at all). You need a mixer when you are playing music live while you talk, if you have a co-host in the room for you. If you are recording skype with just one other co-host you can use a mixer, but you don't need it. You can do it without it. Headset microphones will work, but they don't very good.
