If you're having a conversation about the state of journalism, it's bound to get a little depressing. Since 2008, more than 250 local news outlets have closed down in Canada. The U.S. has lost a third of the newspapers they had in 2005. But this is about more than a failing business model. Only 31 percent of Americans say they trust the media. In Canada, that number is a little bit better – but only a little. The problem is not just that people are losing their faith in journalism. It's that they're starting to place their trust in other, often more dubious sources of information: TikTok influencers, Elon Musk's X feed, and The Joe Rogan Experience. The impact of this shift can be seen almost everywhere you look. 15 percent of Americans believe climate change is a hoax. 30 percent believe the 2020 election was stolen. 10 percent believe the earth is flat. A lot of this can be blamed on social media, which crippled journalism's business model and led to a flourishing of false information online. But not all of it. People like Jay Rosen have long argued that journalists themselves are at least partly responsible for the post-truth moment we now find ourselves in. Rosen is a professor of journalism at NYU who's been studying, critiquing, and really shaping, the press for nearly 40 years. He joined me a couple of weeks ago at the Attention conference in Montreal to explain how we got to this place – and where we might go from here. A note: we recorded this interview before the Canadian election was called, so we don't touch on it here. But over the course of the next month, the integrity of our information ecosystem will face an inordinate amount of stress, and conversations like this one will be more important than ever.  Mentioned:"Digital News Report Canada 2024 Data: An Overview," by Colette Brin, Sébastien Charlton, Rémi Palisser, Florence Marquis "America's News Influencers,"  by Galen Stocking, Luxuan Wang, Michael Lipka, Katerina Eva Matsa,Regina Widjaya,Emily Tomasik andJacob LiedkeFurther Reading: "Challenges of Journalist Verification in the Digital Age on Society: A Thematic Review," Melinda Baharom, Akmar Hayati Ahmad Ghazali, Abdul Muati, Zamri Ahmad"Making Newsworthy News: The Integral Role of Creativity and Verification in the Human Information Behavior that Drives News Story Creation," Marisela Gutierrez Lopez, Stephann Makri, Andrew MacFarlane, Colin Porlezza, Glenda Cooper, Sondess Missaoui"The Trump Administration and the Media (2020)," by Leonard Downie Jr. for the Committee to Protect Journalists.

There's been plenty of conversation over the past decade about how unprepared the mainstream media was for the shifts that have happened in politics and political discourse, especially when it comes to finding... well... the truth. As we move towards the 2024 election, the challenges of reporting and fact checking are once again in the spotlight, and this week we're joined by NYU Journalism Professor and Jay Rosen to talk about the state of modern journalism, and how fact checking so often fails.

Following the shocking attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump, social media platforms were flooded not only with truthful accounts of what happened at the rally, but also with lies, conspiracies and “fake news” concerning the shooting. Alan and Lionel are joined by Jay Rosen, associate professor of journalism at New York University, to explore how to cover a presidential campaign in a time of misinformation, and when a culture war is pitching social media platforms and new forms of media against the so-called “mainstream” or legacy media. Jay shares his views that producing quality journalism may not even matter right now, because those for whom most news analysis is intended aren't paying attention and don't want to read it. Alan and Lionel also reflect on the near-success of the England men's football team. They're joined by sportswriter Paul Hayward to discuss how the media relationship with football has evolved during Gareth Southgate's time with the national squad. Hosted on Acast. Yet alongside these doom loops, somewhat anomalously, something good is happening: the transition away from fossil fuels to clean, carbon-free energy is underway, and it is accelerating every day. That transition has become an enormous, sprawling meta-story. It spans the entire economy, from heavy industry to tech to retail. It's unfolding on every level of government, from local zoning boards to the federal government to international treaties. It involves technology, politics, policy, psychology, even philosophy. It's a lot to track. At Volts, I track it. I follow the news, read the trade publications and research reports, talk to the engineers and policy staffers, and think hard about the larger political and social context. Rather than the broad-and-shallow view offered by most publications, I sift through the flotsam for what matters and then go deep on it. The goal is not quantity of information but quality of understanding. I have been reading, writing, and thinking pretty intensely about this subject matter for over 15 years now. Most recently, from 2015 to 2020, I was with Vox, a news and culture publication for which I still occasionally write. Before that, I was with Grist, a publication focused on environmental news, where I was hired in 2004. Over those 15+ years I've written for other publications (like Outside) and appeared on a variety of TV shows, radio programs, and podcasts, like All In with Chris Hayes and On the Media and Pod Save America and Why Is This Happening? I've been quoted or cited by all kinds of fancy-pants people, from Al Gore to several US senators to pundits like Michelle Goldberg and Paul Krugman and Jon Favreau and Tom Friedman to media analysts like Margaret Sullivan and Jay Rosen to climate writers like Elizabeth Kolbert and Bill McKibben and David Wallace-Wells. As for my pre-professional life, here it is in one paragraph: I grew up in a small town in Tennessee, went to a small liberal arts college in another small town in Tennessee, and then, when I graduated, lit out west. I spent a while in Montana getting an MA in Philosophy (with a minor in snowboarding), then went to work on a PhD at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton (three hours north of Calgary, which is three hours north of the border). Edmonton was too cold and academic philosophy was too bleak, so in 1999 I bailed and lit out to Seattle. After a period of professional drift but personal joy (including a wife and a child), I stumbled into the Grist job by sheer luck in 2004. (I happened to see it the first time I ever visited Craigslist.) Been writing ever since. Now I live in Seattle with my wife, two teens, two dogs, and two cats.  Pete on Tik Tok Pete on YouTube Pete on Twitter Pete On Instagram Pete Personal FB page Stand Up with Pete FB page All things Jon Carroll Follow and Support Pete Coe Buy Ava's Art

They argue that the media should be highlighting the threats to American democracy and the importance of preserving democratic institutions. They also discuss the challenge of covering Trump's lies and the need for journalists to find a balance between calling out his falsehoods and not playing into his strategy. Innovation comes in many forms, and compliance professionals need to not only be ready for it but also embrace it. Today, I visited with well-known compliance professional Jay Rosen to discuss how companies can improve their compliance programs through self-monitoring. Jay Rosen is a seasoned professional with a background in investment banking and a keen interest in ethics and compliance programs. Rosen's perspective on ethics and compliance programs is shaped by his extensive analysis of FCPA enforcement actions over the past decade. He believes that companies should carefully consider their internal setup before deciding whether to bring in a third party for assistance. He suggests that while an outside perspective can sometimes lead to a deeper investigation, a mature ethics and compliance program with sufficient resources in-house can also be effective. Rosen emphasizes the importance of objectivity in these programs and proposes a compromise of working with a fractional monitor if the company lacks the necessary headcount. He sees the increasing use of data analytics and self-reporting as key factors in improving ethics and compliance efforts within organizations. Welcome to the award-winning FCPA Compliance Report, the longest-running podcast in compliance. In this episode, Tom Fox welcomes Jay Rosen who discusses the recent FCPA enforcement action involving the software giant SAP. Jay Rosen is a seasoned compliance professional with a deep understanding of the SAP FCPA enforcement case. His perspective on the topic of SAP's FCPA enforcement case and the importance of cooperation and self-disclosure is shaped by his belief that self-disclosure is paramount in any FCPA investigation or enforcement action. He points out that SAP did not initially self-disclose, but began to cooperate only after investigative reports were made public in South Africa. Despite this, Rosen acknowledges SAP's commendable efforts in providing regular, prompt, and detailed updates to the fraud section, producing relevant documents, and undertaking extensive remediation actions. He underscores the importance of conducting a root cause analysis, implementing data analytics, and enhancing compliance programs and internal controls, asserting that companies can recover if they follow these steps and use data-driven analytics to counterbalance any negative facts. Join Tom Fox and Jay Rosen as they delve deeper into this topic on this episode of the FCPA Compliance Report. What Cynics Get Wrong About Politics

Dastardly Cleverness in the Service of Good

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 25, 2023 62:11

There are lots of reasons to be cynical about the crisis in our politics. The trouble is, one of the biggest causes of that crisis is cynicism itself. We should always be skeptical about politics. People aren't angels, as James Madison reminded us. But skepticism involves checking to find out what's really going on, good or bad. Cynicism is just assuming that it's all bad. This is often mistaken for savviness, which lends cool-kids credibility to claims like “all politicians are crooks,” or “there's no difference between the parties,” or “government never works.” Except none of those claims actually stands up to skeptical scrutiny. Political journalists reinforce cynicism when they cover politics, day by day, as a dirty game in which all the players are more or less the same: self-interested schemers. NYU journalism professor Jay Rosen blames it on what he calls “the cult of savvy,” which rewards reporters for the cynicism of their coverage, when what we need from them is skepticism. Skepticism is healthy, and necessary for democracy. You can't say either about cynicism. If we automatically accept cynical beliefs as true, we make them ever more likely to become true. People who work on behalf of hope gradually withdraw from the arena, leaving it to people all too happy to encourage despair. And those are people who do in fact have very bad motivations. In this way cynicism reinforces itself and becomes a political death spiral. Democracy can't run on despair. But authoritarianism depends on it. This is why authoritarians like Vladimir Putin or Donald Trump don't care that you know they're lying — they want you to know they're lying. It serves their interests if you conclude that everyone is a liar, and lose hope.  Then your only safe choice is to back the most powerful liar. All this is why I wanted to talk this time about what has become a deeply unfashionable topic: morality in politics. Yes, it does exist, and in a democracy it must exist. And once again I talk with Kevin Lewis and Zach Friend.  Kevin has been a communications advisor and spokesman for former President Barack Obama, the White House, the Department of Justice, both Obama campaigns, and Meta. Zach has worked for the White House Council of Economic Advisers, the U.S. Senate, the House of Representatives, and several presidential campaigns, including both of Obama's. He's currently an elected Supervisor in Santa Cruz County, California. Both have seen lots of the good and bad in politics, but neither is a cynic. — Spencer

In the run up to the 2016 election, the media breathlessly followed Trump's every move. Everything Trump was always on. It's estimated that the candidate earned somewhere north of 2 billion dollars in free media coverage during that time. For the networks, former president Trump was the Midas Touch, netting them much needed advertising dollars. But some have argued that the in obsessively covering Trump, the networks did a disservice to democracy. Last week, CNN hosted a Town Hall with Trump in New Hampshire that brings the question top of mind once again. CNN has subsequently come under heavy criticism for hosting someone who is well known to spread lies and disinformation and that it would be impossible to fact check him live. Can the mainstream media cover Trump responsibly in his 2024 run? This week, we're bringing you an episode from our archives that's more relevant than ever. After former President Donald Trump's recent announcement of his 2024 White House bid — and his reinstatement on Twitter — there's the matter of the media: What role should the press play in preserving democratic institutions? When we first asked this question back in December 2021, Times Opinion columnist Ross Douthat pushed back on media critics like N.Y.U. associate professor Jay Rosen, who asserted that the press should strive to be “pro-truth, pro-voting, anti-racist, and aggressively pro-democracy.” Ross disagreed, claiming that such a stance could feed more polarization. Together, Jane, Ross and Jay debate how the press should cover politics, and Donald Trump, in a democratic society.Mentioned in this episode:“Can the Press Prevent a Trump Restoration?” by Ross Douthat“You Cannot Keep From Getting Swept up in Trump's Agenda Without a Firm Grasp on Your Own” and “Two Paths Forward for the American Press,” by Jay Rosen, published in PressThink in May 2020 and November 2020, respectively.(A full transcript of the episode is available on the Times website.)

CNN is a cable news network in flux. Earlier this month, John Harwood, its White House correspondent, announced his departure one day after he stated on air that, “The Republican Party right now is led by a dishonest demagogue. Many, many Republicans are rallying behind his lies about the 2020 election.” The network also recently fired Brian Stelter, a frequent critic of Trump and Fox News. The changes at CNN have caused speculation that these moves may be influenced by cable mogul, John Malone, one of its major investors, who has praised Fox News and openly expressed a hope that CNN would “evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with, and actually have journalists, which would be unique and refreshing.” But where is the middle ground when some politicians routinely attack the truth as lies and push misinformation as truth? We'll talk to media critic Jay Rosen about the future of journalism in a post-Trump era. Guests: Jay Rosen, press critic and editor, PressThink.org; professor of journalism, New York University

In his youth he helped organize the first national demonstration against the Vietnam War, held in Washington in  1965.  He organized rallies against South Africa aparthied and for civil rights in America. Later as an educator and author and media critic of the left and right, worked as both an observer and shaper of thoughts  about media narrative until the end of his life.   Gitlin was also a mentor to many and a huge influence on many who came to the nascent field of media criticism. Among them, New York University journalism professor and Media critic Jay Rosen, writer of the oft-quoted pressthink blog, and a regular here on our show. Brooke spoke with Rosen this week about the influence Gitlin had on his career.     On the Media is supported by listeners like you.
