Kim is a servant of God because He rescued her. By the time she was 17, she had lived through five divorces by two parents: one being an alcoholic, and one having an affair. She didn't grow up facing financial poverty, but her home was filled with chaos and pain. But God did not forget her; He rescued her. He sent people from a local church who invited her every single week to a youth program they hosted. It was full of joy and peace. It was a safe refuge. They cared about her, loved her, and taught her about the Lord. They said, “Kim, the God of the universe made you and He loves you. You're gifted and talented.” “Kim, you're smart. Have you ever thought of going to college?” “Kim, you have leadership abilities. We could hone that for you. We can grow that in you and God could use you for his plans for His future.” They started casting a vision for her of a future where she would use her gifts and talents to serve God. Episode 96 of the Unscripted Podcast is one-on-one with Kim Emch. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Festa Ministry. Her influence and her calling has changed the scores for so many. When Kim was called, there were.... 2158 children who were in poverty and receiving a free or reduced lunch. She made a decision to love, serve and feed them (body, mind and spirit). She made a decision to bring the community with her. We are so blessed in Hilliard, Ohio to have some one with Kims passion, leadership and drive. Along with her army of volunteers and partners, Festa is literally changing the landscape for those that would otherwise have no where else to go. His dad broke up with her four months later and she was home schooled for the remainder of her junior year. To get health benefits for her son, Kim began working during her Senior year of high school, and after she graduated, Kim went to college nights and graduated five years later with a degree in Accounting. For many years Kimberlee was just getting by week to week, working for a CPA days and working as a cashier for Home Depot a few nights a week while her parents watched her son. When Kim’s son Michael was 21 years old, Kim was also caregiving her mom, who had health issues, when her mom unexpectedly passed away from adult-onset diabetes and kidney failure, setting Kimberlee adrift. Who was Kim when she wasn’t caregiving her loved ones and working? This was the beginning of Kim’s inspiring healing and rebirth. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/griefandrebirth/support

In 2007, today's guest, Kim, had a pretty comfortable life. She was happily married with three beautiful young children. She had gone back to school and was finishing her master's degree to become a therapist. After going through struggles when she was young, she  overall felt content with her current life. When Kim had a meeting with her advisor at school to discuss how things were going with regards to seeing patients as a student, she shared that she was really starting to feel comfortable seeing clients. She felt that she really had empathy and a lot to offer patients. In one area, however, she felt like she was lacking. Kim said that she felt like she had a difficult time relating to people experiencing extreme grief. She had not had experienced earth-shattering grief before, and she was having a hard time knowing how to approach them.  A few short months later, however, that would all change. Her life turned completely upside-down when she suddenly and tragically lost her oldest daughter, Daryn. Kim now knew, all too well, what those clients had experienced. She wondered if she would ever even be able to work as a therapist. The grief was life-changing and all-encompassing. The idea of being able to offer help and hope to others seemed completely out of reach. After staying home and caring for herself and her family for the next year, she ultimately decided to finish her training and try to become a therapist. Kim's biggest fear was that she would no longer be able to feel empathy and that she would constantly be comparing her own loss to the losses of her clients. I know that I had that same fear as well. After having my own child die, could I now sympathize with parents whose children had relatively minor complaints? We both have discovered that quite the opposite has been true, however. After experiencing great pain, our empathy for hurting people has increased to levels that we could have never imagined prior to the deaths of our children. Although we would exchange this wisdom and empathy to get our children back in a heartbeat, it is a gift that we can use going forward in our lives and our careers.

If you’ve survived sorrow, have felt the pain of grief and know what it’s like to lose something: a dream, a loved one, etc., this episode is for you. Kim Erickson joins us in today’s episode to chat through practical ways to survive sorrow, seek God in the middle of it, and move urgently in obedience through the grieving process. Kim speaks to the one that hopes to share their story of sorrow, how to share it well, and what it looked like for her to get to the place that she is today.I’ll leave the specifics up to Kim to share with us, but what you need to know is that Kim met the Lord after the sudden death of her young son in 2008. Her testimony is beautiful, and speaks of how God met her in a place of deep grief and sorrow that unfortunately way too many parents understand. In Kim’s story, her experience allowed her to see God with a new perspective, and now, she’s following Him faithfully and sharing her story to help others struggling with grief find hope and light in the middle of it. When Kim’s was first finding her own way through her grief, she found plenty of resources for grieving. She says what she really needed, though, "was someone who would give me advice for living, not just grieving . . . How do I get through the grocery store without crying? What do I do with my son’s things? When will my mind stop replaying the emergency room scene?"Those questions caused her to dive into the Bible, and now, ten years from that moment, she has written a book, Surviving Sorrow, that is blessing so many people. I’m so excited and can’t wait for you to hear this conversation - let’s jump in.Here are some things we mention in this episode:Kim's Book / Surviving Sorrow: A Mother's Guide to Living with Loss Be sure to stay up to date with Abundant Life: You Were Made for More by visiting our blog - and if you're loving the podcast, send guest recommendations to us or leave us a star-rating/review on your favorite listening platform to spread the word about the you were made for more message. You Were Made for More Social Media: FacebookTwitterInstagram

Small Biz Buzz hosts Crystal Heuft and Scott Martineau are joined by Mike Kim, an online educator of marketing who focuses on the personal brand and copywriting space. Kim’s business operates on two arms: copywriting for personal brands–meaning a speaker, a coach, an expert, a trainer, a thought leader, an author, anyone who's paid for their thoughts, and being a marketing consultant for some of the bigger thought leadership brands. “I always say that when you influence language you influence thinking,” said Kim. “We have that opportunity right now because the world is in a very, very unique place and we can use our words to bring comfort, to bring hope, to bring leadership, to bring clarity.” When Kim is ever asked, "What is unique about the way that you see marketing?" he says, marketing isn't about closing a sale. It's about opening a relationship. If you filter everything you say and do, marketing wise, through that lens, that's going to help you, because you're going to approach people as friends. You're going to approach people as people. People do business with people. “My marketing isn't just a nice slick campaign with a nice slogan. It's actually part of a bigger context, which is a movement I'm trying to start,” said Kim. “I'm not trying to be a religious leader, a cult leader, political leader, but in a sense, I'm trying to help the folks who want to become their own boss at a personal brand and help them through using the power of marketing to do it.” During this unprecedented time of the "coronapocalypse" as Kim refers to it, it is a golden opportunity for businesses to pivot the way they brand themselves and let their personal voice come out. Kim started in late August of 2017 after purchasing Bookkeeper Business Launch. Four days later she registered her business name and closed her first client, who later on became her husband. [3:00] Kim had been in the banking industry for 16 years and knew that there was definitely a need for bookkeepers in business. When Kim’s husband decided to start his trucking business, Kim made the choice to start her own bookkeeping business at the same time. [4:15] Kim currently has 8 active clients. There are always ups and downs in the business, and clients come and go. She mainly focuses on transportation due to her insider view of the industry. [6:05] Kim always had the desire to open her own business, but she never really knew what she wanted to do. The high costs of most business models made them prohibitive. When she discovered the idea of bookkeeping, it made a lot of sense given her background and experience. Time-freedom is the word Kim would use to describe the idea of running her own business. [9:30] Retail banking is extremely time intensive, and Kim felt like she wouldn’t be able to go much further in the industry without sacrificing more of her time. Instead of just working more, she wanted to find a way to make more money while working less. [11:20] Sticking to her niche was one of Kim’s first challenges. Many of the clients she initially took on were not the right fit because they were either too small or not appropriate. It can be hard to say no to a client that wants to work with you, but sometimes it’s necessary. [14:50] Kim’s husband has been a very valuable insider who has helped shape her marketing and how she finds clients for her business. [16:05] Take your time as you go through the learning process. While you’re working your way through it, try to put processes in play that will make your life easier. In a lot of ways, time-freedom is a double-edged sword. It’s all too easy to do work that doesn’t actually build your business. Busy work is the work we do to avoid the work we really need to do. [19:00] The biggest challenge today for Kim is that if her business continues to grow, it’s going to take up more of her time unless she hires someone. The trouble is she isn’t sure if she wants to manage people again. [20:35] For Kim, success means the ability to do what she wants to do and having the means to do it. Reaching true financial security is when she would define success. Given that definition of success, Kim doesn’t really need to take on more clients. [22:50] One of the best aspects of the business for Kim has been the option of working as many hours as she wants. In terms of capacity, Kim could probably take on another 3-4 clients without eliminating the time-freedom that she values so much. At this point, she should focus on finding quality clients and upgrading her existing client base. [26:40] When Kim hits a milestone, she takes a moment to enjoy her achievement but also look towards the next goal. She has to realize the pressure is off her. She can shape her business so that it fits her goals instead of doing things to generate an income. [30:50] Paying off her mortgage and becoming debt free is one of Kim’s major goals. The other question is how does she want to spend her time when she’s retired. When Kim thinks about her goals, she always sees herself with other people and how she can help and serve them. To serve others, we have to serve ourselves. [36:30] Whether or not you have team members, your business is a system. Systems are even more important than a list of clients. Once you define your processes and efficiencies, it pays off continuously over time. Start out where you are and map out your processes, and then think about how you can improve them. Processes revolve around your client; if they don’t, then why would you do it? [42:15] You can gain a tonne of momentum and leverage in your business by hiring a virtual assistant. We think we need a big team that comes with a lot of commitment but it’s not necessary. You can take on a VA for only a few hours a week, and it can completely change your business. Before you hire a VA, you need to have your processes designed first. [47:10] Since Kim works in the transportation niche, she has an opportunity to create a course that could help teach her potential clients how to grow their business. When they develop and grow, they could become Kim’s ideal clients. [48:30] Before working on a new business idea, it’s good to vet the idea and make sure it’s worth your time and effort. If someone else is already doing something similar, that’s a good sign. Don’t just take someone’s word that they will buy your idea. It doesn’t mean anything until someone is willing to open their wallet and give you their money. Before taking the leap on a new idea, make sure that the resulting business fits into your vision for your life. [51:50] For new ideas, always start with the market side of things. Once that’s in place, always undersell and overdeliver.   Mentioned in this Episode: Home Time Bookkeeping

When Kim first started running, she didn't like it at all. But she was committed to going to the gym because of the sisterhood at the gym. She thinks part of self-love is learning to know what you need and seeking it out. And having a community to support you is a part of self-love In her early 40s, Kim became a runner, a triathlete, and then a coach. But she didn’t always like endurance activities. At one point, she threatened to fire her trainer because the sessions involved Kim running around the 1/10th mile track at the gym. She stuck with it because she enjoyed the camaraderie among the moms, and because she quickly dropped some weight, all while realizing she was capable of achieving hard things. The discipline she developed as a runner gave her the strength to face a 2015 breast cancer diagnosis with courage. She continued running through treatment and celebrated the end of chemo by running a half marathon with a group of friends a week later. Kim is the author of "Holistic Endurance Training: The Integrated Approach to Thriving as an Athlete," a guide to endurance training that encourages a self-study approach--because training is not one-size-fits-all. Kim shows athletes how to use a journal to track things like training, nutrition, sleep, mood, and thoughts so they can determine which training strategies work for their bodies... and which don't. We say a book is a self-study approach to thriving as an athlete.  The training approach I outline in the book is called Responsive Endurance Training-- what is that and why is it different? President Obama went so far as to call the event the worst environmental disaster the US has ever faced. Our guest on this Pod, Kim Guedry, was responsible for providing daily updates to the state governors and even president Barack Obama as to how things were going. A pretty cool assignment right? But there was only one problem. Kim had never done anything even remotely close to this before. When Kim reported to the scene, she was overwhelmed with imposter syndrome. Why should she be here? Why should she be in charge? How is she going to manage this chaos and not only put out the fires immediately in front of her team, but also piece together the larger, longer term strategy that would be vital to their success. This week’s guest is Kim Wyman, a friend of mine, registered dietitian (RD) with a Masters in Public Health (MPH), who specializes in eating disorders.  Whose house burned down in the Woolsey Fires of LA in Nov 2018.  She’s been living in a van since, and hasn’t been happier.  This episode was soooooo good and inspiring.  Great stuff on healthy nutrition and getting deeper with eating disorders, and about loss and rebirth in the spiritual life.   In it, we cover the following:   -What Really Matters About Nutrition: Dietitian Cocktail Party Conversations -How We Use Food to Feel Better -Does Your Healthy Diet and Exercise Make Your Miserable?  How to Connect to Movement to Be Happier. -“Kim, why don’t you live in a van?” -Spiritually How to Experience A Life Changing Moment -How Kim Grieved When Her House Burned Down in the Fires #Doctor #Host #Moments #Podcast #Show #VanLife #Fires #NaturalDisasters  #Dietitian #MPH #Nutrition #Spiritual #Connection  #EatingDisorders #Anorexia #Wellness #Happiness #Healthy   Show Notes ● [1:07] We have a great guest for you today, Kim Wyman, a dietitian and has a Master's in Public Health. ● When Kim was finishing college, she was interested in preventive medicine. Someone told her that it is not the way to go to the MD route and told her to explore public health. She showed up for graduate school on the doctor's course towards public health, and she picks nutrition as her major. ● [3:22] When you are in public health, you can do women's and children's health. Nutrition is a specialty, so she chose it. When Kim tells people that she is a dietitian, they tend to ask about their diets. They asked about Keto and intermittent fasting. She honestly said to us that it is a boring conversation for her because what matters is we know about nutrition or Keto diet. Still, it is the applied action and relationship to how we meet our needs that matters. ● [5:00] If you have a breakdown and how your ability to meet your needs, like you say you don't deserve, then you're going to have a hard time in grading care. How you feed yourself is the direct basic need and immediate action of care. Disorders around food are usually disorder of self. ● [7:00] In the late '90s, most of her clients were gays with HIV who had lost partners or friends. Dealing with loss and trauma, Kim thought that she's going to specialize in HIV. What happens with eating disorders primarily is that food becomes a way to regulate disruptions or emotions to make them feel better. ● [9:46] Kim said that the menu could adjust things. If you look at someone with anorexia, they're usually talented, very functional, or they might be the envy of everybody else in the room. Still, behind the scenes, they're driving themself almost to death with how they are strict about the food or walking twelve hours at night. They go to regulate a need, and it's kind of starting to take over. It could start with someone just going on a diet and if that temperament is there, it could end badly. ● [11:08]Kim said that sometimes diet conversations could be a little tricky because sometimes the information could be bad for them. You don't know all the time who that person is or what they're dealing with that's why it's an emotional peace and you have to understand them and their needs. ● [14:11] Dr. Larry asks Kim how do we reconcile meeting our needs and enjoying foods with obesity and all of the medical problems that come with all of this. Kim said that in our medical culture, they don't have time to explore the life of an obese person. They look at the labs, weight and tell them to reduce their food. It seems an easy fix on the surface but if you're looking at the environment, the stress level of that person, there are so many things that contribute to specifically diabetes and heart disease. ● [16:46] When someone comes to Kim and wants to lose weight, there is a typical approach that she would take but she has to be really careful of what else is happening to them. Kim honestly told us that if she works with an actor who needs to get ready for a role, it's just business. Their body is their business. Kim had worked with one actor that was suffering from an eating disorder, but there's a string edge, and she couldn't help because of the pressure that was going on. ● [19:00] There's a way to be in a relationship with having permission to have satisfaction and to feel a connection to the food you are eating. There is a real basic truth that the more from the “ground, cared” food is going to be better in our system than something that is highly processed. The intention is not to care, the intention is mass production and profiting. ● [21:43] Cooking a meal and having the time to do that and nurturing yourself and having that relationship fundamentally will experience different in the body than running in your car, eating a burger on the way to somewhere else. Taking the time and letting your body be nourished, allowing something to be honored and appreciated, that's a different reflection towards self. Feeling good is an indicator that you haven't stressed yourself, so overeating doesn't feel good. You have to disconnect in your natural body state and feel bad. ● [23:20] Slowing down while eating or preparing the food, you'll stay connected to the experience. There's so much disconnection from everything in our culture. That relationship to care is an intimate relationship to self. There is so much disconnection that we don't internally feel what we're doing, and it translates to movements too. Kim said that nobody in the blue zones that exercise extremely. Movement is really necessary and being active is also necessary but how we do it is also important. ● [25:44] If Kim misses yoga, she doesn't feel the natural elasticity of her body, so movement is necessary to feel good. You can also go to the gym and be on a diet and look great. It's not a matter if you can't do it and be healthy, but are you happy? ● [27:25] Talking about people who don't exercise, Dr. Larry remembered Bill Barata, a ninety-eight years old farmer who is a farmer and never exercised before. Kim explains the Maslow's hierarchy, a pyramid and on the bottom is basic needs. You can't get to the next level until you meet your basic needs, and on the top is self-actualization. ● [29:03] Self-actualization is when you're in the flow. We can't multitask very well, but when you're in the flow of something, you almost lose time. Being a farmer like Bill doing his task and that probably the antidote to stress because you're activating all connections to self. Stress distracts from our connection to ourselves and distract your ability to be in the flow. ● [31:45] Kim has many different moments in her life but the most dramatic one was when her house got burned down by the Woolsey fire. At that moment, she was possession less and homeless. She got out with her dog and a little go bag because she thought that she's going back when they have to evacuate. ● [33:00] The wind is something wicked on that day. In California, it's not just a breezy day. Its gale force 70 mph to 80 mph winds that would be qualified for a firestorm. She knows a person that works with search and rescue that called to inform her that there was a fire, but it's 20 to 30 miles away from them. He told Kim to pack a bag just in case they have to evacuate. ● [35:00] Kim's twin sister called her to know if she's going to be okay. Her sister is more anxious than she was and told her that she's not going to sleep if she doesn't leave. Kim went to her friend's house to evacuate; at that night they were focused on the news. When she woke up, she got a call from one of her colleagues at work and found out that the fire was getting close to her place, and she still thought that the fire wouldn't get to her house. ● [37:00] When she saw on channel two that her house was on fire, that's when she finally drops. Five hours after that, her friend snuck back in and called her that their whole street was gone. Her house was gone and her place of business was also affected so they were shut down. ● {39:00] Luckily, there are places for her to land, so many people don't have anywhere to go. When she went on their family trip to Kauai, Kim was thinking of her mortgage and trying to find rent in L.A. She still needs to pay the mortgage even if her house got burned down. It was really hard for her because of how much attachment she had on her space. She's trying to find something that would fit too, but it wasn't coming through. ● [41:00] When Kim was in Kauai, her sister asked if she could live in the van and then showed her a couple living in a cute van. Kim said that she can live in that van. She emailed the couple and told her story but it will take a long time to finish the van. Luckily, the very van that her sister showed was offered to her. She buys the van, quit her job and hit the road. ● [43:08] Kim got a referral and has clients all over the west coast and Canada all year and totally changed her life. She travels, climbs mountains and minimizes everything in her life. She's gone from worrying about a lot of corporate stuff or the renovation of her house, and now she's not thinking any of it. ● [45:32] Kim thinks when there is a life-changing moment, it is how you choose to experience it. You can get stuck in the perception of loss and how it happened to you versus how it happened for you. Kim said that loss is just a massive spiritual game- changer if you want to be available to know how to receive it. ● [47:00] Kim has an accessibility to do things that she loves like cooking from the road, finding little places along the way. Places that people still have connection to the food. She has some crazy experiences, connecting to our culture and also finding the variances of it and being able to feel more intimate connection to people, places and food. ● [49:00] It is sad for Kim to lose all those little things that would connect to her family. Kim said that she probably left exactly how she did because her house was a tinderbox. She always knew that if the fire came, she needed to run. There were a few things that she wanted to grab but, in that situation, it is really hard to think about what is important. ● [52:10] Kim didn't choose this path. She realizes that everything happened for us. Sometimes things feel painful and tragic, but at the same time, it's how we emerge from that experience. She feels safer, more at peace, and has less worry than she did a year ago. She spent most of her time on the west coast and in the Canada. She wants to go more and thinking to ship the van in to Europe doing a European trip. ● [54:50] Dr. Larry asks Kim how she grieves about her loss. Kim said that the fire took everything. It didn't just take her house, it took her whole world, her whole environment was like Armageddon. She has lived there for 14 years and being in the area makes her felt devastating. ● [58:21] Kim told us that part of the grief is moving through grief. You can't stay in it because it's not productive after a minute. It's productive to move with that energy and to let that move through your body, but it has to be like a wave that would come in a crash and dissipates and come in again, and eventually, you let it out. ● [60:40] Kim told us that she donated her eggs. She had a genetic daughter. Three weeks ago, her genetic daughter had a son, and she was able to go there, she has the freedom to be with people she loves and to connect in that way too. ● [62:07] Her van is a Mercedes Sprinter, and Alex and Sarah James fully convert it. It is 21 feet long. She has a king-size bed, a shower, a toilet, a stove, and a car all in one. Dr. Larry asked her if she would return when her house was built. Kim was thinking of spending half a year in her home and the other half to her van because it is entertaining for her to be elsewhere. ● [65:31] Kim has a practice site, and you can do video calls or facetime. She thinks that telemedicine is something that transitions in a lot of therapy fields and medicine. It is easier for clients too because they didn't have to drive to go in appointments. ● [67:00] Kim talks about the emotional side of food. She does not sound like an (MPH) or a dietitian. She looks like a physiologist. Kim didn't have a psychology background. Her dad was a pastor that does counseling. She deals with people, and their emotional stress tends to slice things pretty easily. ● [69:15] She thinks that there's a difference in being well and healthy versus looking a certain way. If you want to look a certain way at fifty, you have to be more specific about things because you're naturally not looking like that. If you're active, enjoying your food, enjoying your life, still doing all the physically engaging things, your body is going to be brilliant, but you might don't have a six-pack, but if you want a six-pack, there are things you have to do. ● [71:17] Some people are having enough self-awareness and enough self-love that they can play around with doing something more specific, and it's not from a place of fear. Maybe you don't want to eat carbs because of fear, and it's because that would make you feel better. Kim said that she couldn't hold judgment about a person's feelings and relationship to it because being well is simply your version of what makes you feel good, and it isn't everybody's. ● [73:40] We can find her on Instagram @our.soul.ingredient.

From the Simplr studios in San Francisco, this is your daily briefing.  IntroductionThis is Today in Five, for today, Monday, February 3rd. Here are today’s headlines in digital disruption. Is Kim Kardashian’s move into wholesale with Nordstrom a sign of the changing DTC times? In this episode, we explore how Kim, who has an impressive social media following and online presence, still needed Nordstrom to expand and grow her SKIMS brand.First, here are the latest headlines.Forever 21 Receives BidMonths after filing for bankruptcy, Forever 21 has a new bid from Authentic Brands and mall operators Simon Property and Brookfield. The $81 million dollar bid would serve as a baseline for an auction for Forever 21 and includes a breakup fee of $4.7 million dollars and expense reimbursement of $1 million dollars if the retailer accepts an alternate deal. The retailer proposed to the court a bid deadline of February 7th and an auction, if necessary, by February 10th.  Macy's Opening a New Concept StoreAccording to a press release, Macy’s will open what it calls a flexible retail store format in Southlake, Texas. The 20,000-foot store will be called Market by Macy’s. The new store’s space will host, “community-driven programming from cooking tutorials and book signings to crafting and fitness classes.” The new location will also debut two new exclusive Macy’s brands. The move indicates the retailer is taking new steps to develop store concepts, and to learn from the process, as it considers doing business on a much smaller scale.  Facebook Reports Increased Growth and RevenueFacebook reported a growing userbase and increasing quarterly revenue, capping a year of strength in its core advertising business even as expenses climbed. The social media giant’s revenue rose 25 percent to $21.1 billion dollars for the quarter, beating analyst expectations. Revenue for 2019 rose by nearly 27 percent. Profit for the fourth quarter also topped expectations, rising 7 percent to $7.35 billion dollars. The latest report extends a strong performance typical for the company even in the midst of social questions and government scrutiny.  Kim Kardashian’s Expansion Into Nordstrom Is A Sign Of The Changing DTC Times  Is Kim Kardashian’s move into Nordstrom a sign of the digitally-native times? When Kim launched SKIMS, her shapewear brand featuring a variety of diversified products in a broad range of sizes, early products sold out. Kim continued to promote the brand using her immense social presence, and the products continued to sell out as the brand restocked. SKIMS had the potential to be the defining brand for Kim, having more promise than her previous brands KKW Beauty and Fragrance, which were more opportunistic than unique.Earlier this year, Kim announced that the SKIMS brand would be expanding into 25 Nordstrom stores across America starting in early February, and would also be available online at Nordstrom.com. The move raises the question that if Kim Kardashian, who has a large social presence and earned media followings need Nordstrom, what about all the other digitally-native brands?  This isn’t the first time she or one of her family members has expanded into wholesale after hitting the online-only growth ceiling. Her sister Kylie was the first to move into Ulta after three years with Kylie Cosmetics, and Kim soon followed suit with KKW Beauty. Then after Kylie launched Kylie Skin, she moved into Ulta only five months after the brand’s debut. Now, five months after launching SKIMS, Kim is entering Nordstrom. The reasons she’d make the move toward wholesale are simple. An apparel brand that offers such a broad range of sizing means that customers are going to return a lot of items as they try to find their fit. Kim’s social media followers are also potentially saturated by the marketing of Kardashian products, while the Nordstrom audience is likely wealthier and older than most of Kim’s following. Not to mention that digitally-native brands can only get so big before they have to expand into other channels to avoid high digital marketing spend.  If Kim Kardashian needs Nordstrom to grow her business, there’s a good chance that every consumer brand could benefit from the strategy.  ClosingWant to stand out? Kim Forrester, CPA, didn’t start out to be a trailblazer; but as the first female partner at her accounting firm, Levine Jacobs and Company, she is a role model for women coming up the ranks in accounting. She credits her success to fully understanding the needs of her clients---primarily doctors, dentists, and small businesses. GRABBING OPPORTUNITY WHEN IT COMES KNOCKING The timing of Kim’s career move to public accounting wasn’t totally planned.  Listen as she describes her work at a Fortune 100 company and what motivated her to obtain her accounting degree. “Frankly,” she says, “I was downsized out of my position.” That’s what ultimately got her to move. “The company was going public and it had to reduce its headcount.”  I bet many of us can relate to that. When Kim joined her firm, she was more “seasoned” than some of the other new accountants.  It’s all in your perspective, Kim offers. Where some might have seen a challenge, she found opportunity. If you’ve ever faced a similar career challenge, you’ll be encouraged by her story. GRANDMA AS CLASSROOM MOM While Kim was completing her degree in accounting, she was also working full time and a single mom raising her young son.  Like many women, she was fortunate to have friends and family to help her along the way with childcare and other “mom” duties.  Listen as she lovingly describes how her mom became classroom mom for Kim’s son. “WE’RE SERVICE PROVIDERS”  As like many of her clients, Kim ultimately considers herself a service provider. And she is well aware of the competition out there for accountants.  She admits that you need to distinguish yourself in the marketplace.  In this episode she shares her philosophy on how to succeed at this. GET OUT THERE AND NETWORK As her firm’s first female partner, growing her client list and the firm takes time and consistency. “You have to put yourself out there on a regular basis and meet new people,” she says.  At first, she admits, networking was tough.  She advises young accountants to just get out there and do it: it will become easier with time and practice. And in order to get the ball rolling when she meets a business owner: “It’s important to have an elevator pitch,” she says.  And it can be something as simple as, “How satisfied are you with the service provided by your current accountant?” You need to ask questions and you need to dig deep and understand the prospect’s business needs, she continues. How does Kim balance rainmaking and servicing clients?  Listen in to learn how! BEST CAREER ADVICE SHE EVER RECEIVED? Especially in accounting, she says, you have to keep organized.  She admits this can be a challenge when juggling a business, clients’ needs, family and growing an accounting practice. She shares her tips about how to stay on top of it all. WORDS OF WISDOM TO YOUNGER WOMEN  Accounting is a great career for women, Kim says, and with many men retiring from the profession, opportunities abound.  But will you like it?  If you think you might have an interest in accounting, she advises, take a course or two in bookkeeping or basic accounting. Even if it turns out you don’t want to pursue an accounting degree, you’ll still have useful skills for whatever career you chose. About Kim E. When Kim and I started to realize that we wanted to dream bigger, we had to take a hard look at the vision we each had for our future. This took a lot of hard work for us to get on the same page and grow together, but we did it, and we want to share with you just how we went about it.  Resources: Mastermind: workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind (https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind/) Virtual mastermind: workhardplayhard90.com (http://workhardplayhard90.com) Connect with us on Instagram: @robmurgatroyd (https://www.instagram.com/robmurgatroyd/) The Push Journal (https://pushjournal.com/?mbsy_source=d8f18da2-10d5-4a98-b85c-9bdabad61ee5&mbsy_exp=Thu%2C+12+Dec+2019+20%3A36%3A32+GMT&campaignid=35053&mbsy=BTPZC)

Today’s episode is a review of a fabulous SciFi novel entitled Lucy, which was written by Thea Ramsay. Description: Ten-year-old Lucy and her parents live on Earth in the last throes of its final holocaust. Their only hope is being accepted as refugees on another world, but one rejection letter after another eats away at their hope, while death closes in on them. Hope revives when a stranger arrives with a letter of acceptance from the mysterious planet Andorpha. While Lucy, her best friend, Kim, and her parents wait to board the space ship, her parents are killed. Lucy faces danger and growth as she comes to grips with her parents' death and the strange customs of Andorpha. While Kim laps up Andorphian love like warm milk, Lucy wonders if it's all too good to be true. When Lucy learns the Andorphians believe their planet is under a curse, she begins to suspect there is a reason that she and her family were so readily accepted as refugees. Do they expect her to be the antidote to an ancient curse? When Kim urges Lucy to accept the Andorphians and their way of life, the only shot at life they have, Lucy is certain she's right. But all is not what it seems. Work Hard Play Hard

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2019 43:42

Today’s Topic: Our Marriage Kim and I are not relationship counselors, but people ask us relationship questions all the time. We came together after failed marriages so we do a lot of work on ours and there are a lot of people that we learn from, including Tony Robbins, Cloé Madanes and John and Julie Gottman.  In this episode we answer a few questions, and the first one is, how do you manage your expectations of each other? The answer is that we have a conversation about how we like to live and assign a numerical value to each of our needs. And whoever has a higher need in that particular area wins. For example, my need for neat, organized clean spaces wins out in our living spaces because Kim really doesn’t care.  If you have expectations of your significant other, write them down and ask, is it in their zone of genius? Is it something they naturally do? If it's not their expectation, then the buck is going to have to stop with you. For example, if having dirty dishes in the sink drives you crazy, then go do the dishes yourself. If you have all these expectations and your partner's not meeting the expectations, and you guys are fighting about these things, my guess says there's a bigger underlying issue and these little things are the straw that broke the camel's back because in reality they're not that big of a deal. Couples also sometimes get into a lot of horse trading. I did this for you, why don't you do this for me? And that is a recipe for freaking disaster. The way we approach it is really try and listen to what each other is saying. So if I hear Kim saying something two or three times, then I know it's important to her. I want to do things because I love her. And I want her to feel taken care of and loved. And even beyond all of that, I want to do it just because I love her. We’re playing at a high level relationship where Kim’s dream is my dream and what lights her up lights me up so we’re constantly trying to anticipate each other’s needs. If you have a significant other and you feel they don’t do anything for you, dig deep and say, for the next month or whatever I am going to continue to give 100% without any expectations of anything coming back to me. If nothing changes possibly you are with the wrong person or you need to have a conversation with that person about how unfair that is.  The next question is, how can you give your spouse or significant other negative feedback without damaging the relationship? Knowing what makes your spouse tick and their love language is really important. So reconnecting with what lights that person up, what makes them feel loved and secure and taken care of and happy, and what makes them feel like they're contributing. When giving feedback, an idea is to start with yourself and what you wish you were doing better and then possibly they will want to reciprocate where they feel like they're falling short. Kim and I don't have big blow-ups because our communication is so open and we’re interacting on a micro level all day. The other thing is that our natures are very much in alignment with each other. We like to do similar things. A lot of people try to change their spouse. But who did you marry? Or who are you with? Why did you choose to be with them? And what did you know about them at that time? When Kim and I got married she knew that I need to have a really clean house and I knew that she loves to travel to weird places, so we don’t try to change each other. If your boyfriend is lazy and his shit is all around his apartment, that’s not going to change when you walk down the aisle.  The other side of that coin is be careful not to freeze somebody in time because people do change and grow. Something that comes up a lot is that one partner will be getting into personal development and they're starting to look inside and seeing their flaws and their limiting beliefs. But their spouse is still over there on the couch eating Cheetos....

Kim decided to strike out on her own to help other minority women launch their own companies. Kim owns two companies. Lift Development Enterprises is a not for profit business accelerator and incubator program offering support for women starting out in business. Once one woman of color has made an advancement, it paves the way for others to follow in their footsteps. Kim explains what makes her want to invest in a business. From personality traits, qualities, and attributes to business plans and existing investment, it really is about getting a complete view. We also look at why it’s so important to build and maintain a positive relationship with your investors. Have you felt held back by the gatekeepers in your career? To impeach or not to impeach? Joe Biden has a big 2020 announcement; Putin and Kim have 'good' nuke talks #MagaFirstNews w/@PeterBoykin Ready, set ... Joe? Biden expected to launch 2020 presidential campaign After months of speculation, former Vice President Joe Biden is expected to officially announce Thursday morning that he’s joining the crowded field of Democrats running for president in 2020. Biden is expected to release a video with his announcement. Despite the recent #MeToo controversy where several women accused him of touching them inappropriately at events, Biden, 76, has remained at the top of most public opinion polls. His strongest competition for the Democratic nomination right now is Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., 77, who has stirred controversy this week for his support for allowing prisoners to vote. Sanders also has faced tough crowds at recent town halls and gatherings, most recently at a She The People Forum devoted to women of color in Houston on Wednesday night, where hecklers left the self-described democratic socialist visibly frustrated. When Kim met Putin Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said Thursday they had good talks about their joint efforts to resolve a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear program, amid stalled negotiations with the United States. Speaking at the start of the talks at a university on Russky Island across a bridge from Vladivostok, Putin voiced confidence that Kim's visit will "help better understand what should be done to settle the situation on the Korean Peninsula, what we can do together, what Russia can do to support the positive processes going on now." Kim's trip to Russia, his first, comes about two months after his Hanoi summit with President Trump failed because of disputes over U.S.-led sanctions on the North. Putin, observers say, wants to expand Russia's clout in the region and gain more leverage with Washington. - The Associated Press To impeach or not to impeach? Leading Democrats and 2020 Democratic candidates for president have been divided over whether to pursue impeachment against President Trump since last week's release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's redacted report, which found no evidence of collusion and did not draw a conclusion on whether Trump obstructed justice. Despite various ongoing congressional investigations of Trump, which the president has vowed to fight, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not want to pursue it. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., known for rallying supporters with her cries to "impeach 45," now seems hesitant. And Hillary Clinton has cautioned House Democrats in a Washington Post op-ed against immediately launching impeachment proceedings against Trump and urged the party to widen its platforms to a more “sensible agenda” for the upcoming elections. Jewish group calls for controversial freshman lawmaker's removal from committees, Democratic Party One of America’s oldest Jewish organizations called Wednesday for U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., to be removed from congressional committees and from the Democratic Party. In an editorial posted on its website, the Zionist Organization of America, which dates to 1897, pointed to what it described as Tlaib’s “anti-Israel record,” and accused the freshman congresswoman of associating with “terrorists, anti-Semites and conspiracy theorists.” “Rashida Tlaib’s anti-Israel record was already well-known before she was elected in last year’s midterm elections,” the ZOA article asserts. Since taking office in January, Tlaib has been a lightning rod for criticism from Republicans as well as from members of her own party. Blockbuster numbers anticipated for 'Avengers: Endgame' "Avengers: Endgame" hits U.S. movie theaters nationwide on Thursday night and marks the highly anticipated conclusion to a decade-long run for the Disney-owned Marvel series, which reintroduced several classic superheroes to modern audiences. “Avengers” has been one of Disney’s most bankable film franchises at the box office. Fox Business breaks down “Avengers: Endgame” by the numbers.

Durning the month of December, we’re revisiting some of our favorite, most informative shows. This is a rebroadcast of episode 248 featuring Kim Freeman who, with the help of her trained tracking cat Henry, helps find cats when they've gone missing – enjoy! Kim Freeman turned her lifelong love for cats into a career as a professional missing cat finder. When her own cat Mr. Purr went missing in 2008, Kim realized how little support families with a missing cat receive, and what bad advice they tend to be given. She set out to change this and today has developed a very specific process to help people all over the world find their missing cats. Kim starts by educating the cat’s owners using a downloadable online booklet and videos on her website. She then asks the owners to fill out an extensive cat profile questionnaire so that she can determine a search strategy. Kim tells us that there are eight probabilities of what could have happened to a missing cat, and her questionnaire, which asks about indoor behavior patterns, helps determine which of those probabilities is most likely. Based on the results of the questionnaire, Kim then coaches the owner on what they need to do to try to find their cat. When Kim does in-person searches, her cat Henry sometimes accompanies her. Henry is trained to track scent, and she often uses him in cases where an indoor-only cat has escaped outside. Kim knows of only one other trained search cat out there, but she believes that it is a great way to go, as search dogs are more likely to scare off a missing cat than find it. Kim is also passionate about the role shelters play in reuniting lost cats and their families. Nationally, the return to owner rate once a cat reaches a shelter is a dismal 2%. Kim feels shelters can help get this rate up by becoming a resource for the community around best practices for searching for a lost cat—or by directing the community to resources that can help. She believes strongly in Return to Field, and in microchipping as well. She would love to see shelters offer mobile, low-cost, in-home microchipping! Kim has a presentation on simple system that shelters can use to organize their lost and found data that she is glad to share if folks want to get in touch via her website. Finally, Kim would like to spread the word about the “litter box myth”—the idea that if your cat goes missing, you should put out her used kitty litter box to attract her back to the area. Not only does it not work, Kim tells us, it is actually a bad idea because it can attract wildlife and predators, as well as territorial bully cats who may chase your cat farther away. As Kim puts it, “your house smells more like home than a kitty litter box!” Learn more about Kim and her services at lostcatfinder.com. “I would really like anyone who has anything to do with lost cats to realize how important it is not to give up, and not to assume anything.” Kim Freeman turned her lifelong love for cats into a career as a professional missing cat finder. Adversity is inevitable. For Leonard Kim, adversity was his way of life for a series of years through his early adulthood life. The popular TEDx talk speaker shares his story of coming from a point of ultimate defeat where we had considered taking his own life, to rising to a point where he inspires others to let their fears guide them through life. This is an incredible episode. “I got to a point where I got sick and tired of being sick and tired.” Kim faced every kind of adversity from every direction during his early career which led him to a continuous writing spree. Unlike many other influencers in society today, Leonard Kim refused to take the traditional approach to success. When Kim decided to use writing an outlet to let go of his misfortune, he built up a fear of what people were going to say once he pressed the “Publish” button. This fear led him to a bigger idea; the idea of using that fear to guide him to reaching his potential. Through sharing his story with the world, he inspired others to look at their own points of failure and minimize the negativity that surrounded them. “What was scarier than writing itself, was really sharing the vulnerable points in my life.” Being vulnerable means showing the world your faults, and we all live in a prideful world. Kim shares his story from the very beginning in his TEDx talk that is shown below. Listen and learn how one man used fear, something that we all work so hard to avoid and prevent, as a light to guide him through his career.     We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it. Many terms circulate in the special needs circle. When Kim's daughter became a teenager, she started to hear grumblings about what was around the corner. What does it mean for our special needs loved ones?

It Takes a Village To Raise a Parent

Guilt. It’s something that we all experience, but it could be more prevalent once you become a parent. Mom guilt, dad guilt, working parent guilt -- there are more types of guilt than can be named, and most parents feel it at some point! Left unchecked, guilt can build upon itself. The good news is that while you might always experience it to some extent, guilt is a manageable feeling. Kim Graham-Nye, one of the co-founders of GDiapers, talks to us today about the guilt she has as a parent. She still struggles with it, but she’s found ways to deal with it. If you experience guilt, and you probably do, be sure to tune in to learn some strategies for handling it. Some of the highlights of the show include: ● How Kim ended up being a working parent, including her background and early career history and how she got into having her own company. ● When Kim’s mother-guilt took hold and why it became overwhelming. She talks about what she felt guilty about, but as a mom and as a business-owner. ● How leaving her company for a few months gave her needed perspective as far as guilt and family life was concerned. ● Why guilt is universal, particularly among moms and how it does not discriminate between working and stay-at-home parents. ● Kim’s thoughts on work-life balance and why it’s so elusive. ● Why unrealistic expectations can lead to guilt. ● Thoughts on the differences between mommy-guilt and daddy-guilt.

Engineer meets Maker Kim has a civil engineering degree from Purdue University with an emphasis in structural design. But once she became a mom to twin boys, she put that engineering background to use in other ways. She had a problem that desperately needed a solution: her boys were too thin for their pants, and the only belt she could find was $18 at Janie and Jack. That didn't fly with Kim. She knew she could create something better for less. She got to work, and soon her friends were asking her to make belts for them too. Kim then used her structural design background to reverse engineer a bag in larger proportions for moms on the go. Kim found that the current tote bags on the market just didn't have enough space or durability to work for her. As she solved her own problem, once again, she had customers waiting to buy totes from her too. Lucy Jane Totes was born, and Kim absolutely loves her business because she can work from anywhere. Her husband is also a civil engineer who works on bridge design. His job moves often because he has to go where the big bridge projects are, so in just five years' time, their boys had already lived in 5 cities and 3 states. Lucy Jane Totes also gives Kim a sense of identity. No matter where she lives or how new and out of place she may feel, she has her business as a constant to fall back on. Ruthlessly Eliminate! Kim's business started with local sales. This was a great confidence booster for her, and made her realize she could make a go of selling products online. She started her Etsy shop several years ago, and initially, it was a hodge podge of items - pillowcase dresses, nursing covers, and tote bags, among other things. After learning more about business and how to create a solid brand identity, Kim realized that she needed to focus more and ruthlessly eliminate (my words - not hers!) the items that didn't fit with her brand. Kim chose to focus on her tote bags and make that her business. In the process, she eliminated all the other random items in her shop. This was an especially risky and difficult decision, because at the time, Kim's nursing covers were being featured in Pregnancy and Newborn Magazine! However, Kim had to streamline for a few reasons: A strong brand identity makes it clear to customers what you're about. Focusing on just a few things allows you to master your craft and produce the highest-quality items. At the time, Kim's boys were in preschool just a few days a week, and she didn't have any other child care available to her. She had to focus because she simply didn't have time to pursue every product idea. Kim says when she ruthlessly eliminated other products, her sales took off! Deciding on a "Look" Kim's advice on choosing your brand identity is to determine what you want your overall "look" to be for your products and business. As creatives and makers, it's easy to find new fabrics or product ideas that we just LOVE, but if it doesn't work together with the other items in your shop, you just shouldn't include it. Every new product you add needs to fit with your brand. Kim's husband always reminds her that the most successful restaurants tend to have focused, small menus. It should be the same way with a handmade business. Kim's Risky Move Kim made another risky move in her business not long after deciding on her brand identity. She closed her shop for an entire year! The business was rolling along. She was getting a lot of sales and good publicity, but because she didn't have good child care for her boys, her work time was falling from 8-midnight each night. Kim admitted that she started turning into "mean mommy. " She wasn't getting enough sleep and she felt pulled in every direction. Kim asked herself, "what will I regret the most?" She knew that she would regret pushing hard on her business at the expense of her kids and family. Her relationship with her kids and husband matters most - so she took a break from the biz and just focused on them. A year later, the boys were starting school and Kim's schedule was better. She got back to work on Lucy Jane Totes and says it was a great decision! She returned to her business with a new energy and focus on where she wanted things to go.Perspective... it's just so important! Why Kim is the CEO and COO Kim hasn't outsourced very much in her business, and part of this is because she didn't have the best experience when she tried. Last year, Kim set up her own website using the Shopify platform. Initially, she hired someone to create an e-commerce site for her, but it turned into a bit of a disaster because Kim had a very clear vision for how she wanted her site to look. (After all, she had refined her branding and knew what her business was all about!) The project was so far along that Kim ended up paying for a site that she never used. That was her lesson. She loves learning , and she's not intimated by googling until she can figure out how to add a new piece of code. So Kim uses a template from Shopify and changes aspects of the template to suit her brand. By being her own COO, she can ensure that her vision comes to life. Etsy versus Shopify Etsy has changed a lot since it first began. It's now much easier to sell items that are far from handmade on the site, and for this reason, it's a bit discouraging for a true handmade seller like Kim. There are plenty of tote bags on the site that were purchased wholesale from China and a monogram was added. Kim creates her bags from start to finish. Potential customers even write to Kim to tell her that they can get a bag like hers for less money! On the other hand, Etsy is great for getting traffic into your shop, and great for getting found via search engines and via Etsy search. It's hard to get the same level of traffic on a brand new site of your own. With Shopify, Kim can design a shop that matches her brand perfectly, and with her customization and monogram options, it's much easier to make this choices clear and streamlined on her own site. But, it will take time for Kim to build up the same level of traffic and customers that she gets from Etsy. It's a balancing act, and at this point, she wants to keep both shops open. How to Get Found Kim gets more consistent sales from Etsy because of the sheer volume of shoppers searching there and being able to optimize her listings for SEO. But if an influencer is talking about her items on social media, they'll link right to her own site and she'll see a spike in sales. Kim also uses her business social media accounts to point people to her own site versus Etsy. Kim also gets found quite often via Google image searches. Both her Etsy listings and her blog photos get found this way. Kim actually got an order from the Estee Lauder companies to use her tote bags for a sales meeting, and they found her Etsy shop via Google image search! Working on the Business One of Kim's biggest goals is to increase traffic and sales on her Shopify site, but it's difficult to do when she's still the person sewing all of her bags. She knows that in order to grow, she'll need to hire someone to help with the sewing so she can work on the business more and in the business less. It's a difficult task to find someone who will do the job well, because Kim is very particular. She creates quality products that will last for years so she has to find an employee with the same high standards and skill level. She knows that outsourcing will be worth it in the end, but the first step is the hardest!(Isn't that the truth... any big decision in business seems so scary and it can be difficult to take action on it.) Instagram vs Pinterest vs Facebook - It's War! Ok, so the headline was just for fun. It's really not war between these social networks. Kim finds them all useful for different things, and we have to agree! Instagram:  Kim is most active here. She's a visual person and she loves turning her Instagram feed into a board of inspiration.  Instagram also lets Kim have more interaction with her customers and followers versus Pinterest, where people don't chat very often. Pinterest:  Kim loves Pinterest for its ability to take photos of her work and make them spread. She once had a photo from her blog on a kitchen storage project that got featured on Apartment Therapy! That pin has been re-pinned thousands of times and still brings her steady Pinterest traffic.Facebook:  Facebook is a great place to have a conversation that lasts. Genuine relationships with your audience can be made here. (We agree, and we just love our private facebook group!) Blogging for Business Keeping up with a blog while running a handmade business is hard, but Kim has a clear goal with her blog: Keep content fresh enough that when someone new stops by her site, they know she's a real and active business. From there, Kim makes it really easy for a blog visitor to head to her shop or follow her on social media where she has time to post more often. Kim posts about shop updates, a bit about family life, and crafty tutorials or photography tips.Kim won't give up her blog even if her posts are infrequent, because those meta-tags on your photos are so great for Google image searches. If she had unlimited time, Kim says her focus would be on more DIY tutorials, sewing projects, and home projects. Blog Ideas for Handmade Business Owners: Post DIY and Crafty Tutorials Your ideal customer is probably pretty crafty but will splurge for just the right handmade item when it's too tricky for her to make herself! Share behind the scenes. Talk about your day-to-day life. Share beautiful photos. Talk about your family and personal life too. All of these posts let your audience get to know you better, and in turn, like and trust you. Share tips on how to run a handmade business. While this approach is a little less direct (the blog audience you attract may not be your ideal customer exactly) it's not a bad idea. Other handmade business owners are much more likely to support small, handmade businesses themselves! You could be next on their gift list. My name is Who, my name is What? Sorry for the Slim Shady reference, I couldn't resist! Just like Sarah and I couldn't resist asking how Lucy Jane Totes got its name. It's such a cute name... but its owner's name is.... Kim? The story behind Lucy Jane is really sweet. Kim and her husband originally planned to have a whole slew of kids, but with twin boys and a tough pregnancy, they decided they were quite content with two healthy kids. They knew if they ever had a girl they would name her Lucy Jane. Jane is Kim's mom's name, and she's been a big source of inspiration in Kim's life. When they realized they likely wouldn't ever have a girl, they named the business Lucy Jane instead. The Creative Process After talking about Kim's business name, this launched us into a conversation on the doubts that creep into all of our minds when we pursue something creative. When an idea first strikes you think, "Oh my gosh this is the best thing ever!" Then the next day you'll think, "Oh my gosh this is the worst thing!" Then a few days later you'll think, "Oh this is really good!" Isn't that the truth? When Kim designs bags or new products, she likes to make one, step back for a bit, then re-examine who work to figure out if she really likes it or not.We agree! A little space from your creative work can do wonders for your perspective. And likely, it isn't the best or the worst, but somewhere in the middle. Just put it out into the world and likely some people will love it... and some won't. And that's ok! Kim Takes all her Own Photos...of herself? Sarah and I were dying to know how Kim gets such great photos of her bags! And... most of those photos have her in them holding the bags and showing them off. (Seriously, if you haven't clicked over to Kim's site yet, now's the time to do it... her photos are amazing.) So how does Kim manage to take all her own photos... while she's in them?! Kim sets her camera up on a tripod. FYI - she uses a Nikon D700 (just a step below a professional camera) She configures her camera to a remote. Kim says if you look closely at some of her photos you can see the remote in her hand, although she tries her best to hide it! Kim tethers her camera to her I-mac so her photos are automatically imported into Lightroom. This allows Kim to immediately see how her photos look on a computer screen and accurately assess what needs tweaking. Kim snaps several different positions of her holding each bag. She grabs a photo, quickly edits it, and uploads it into a Shopify in a draft setting so she can compare it to her current product photos. This helps her to make sure the white balance is correct for her new batch of photos. Once the white balance is right, Kim sets up Lightroom so that it will automatically apply all of those edits to the next picture. Gorgeous photos and cohesive look... DONE! Kim says she used to take all the photos at once then sit down at her computer to edit only to find out that something was off. Now she saves herself loads of time by seeing the photos on the computer immediately and making adjustments before she takes too many photos that aren't right. So... what's a tether? With Lightroom starting a "tether" is one of the features offered. (Kim has a subscription to Lightroom and Photoshop through Adobe Creative Clouse for $10/month.) To start a tether, just use the mini USB port to connect your camera directly to your computer .Then start your tether in lightroom, and your photos will show up on your computer screen right away instead of on your camera screen. Kim's other Killer Tool:  Dropbox. Kim exports her photos as a square to dropbox, so that way she's ready to upload them to her website or use them on Instagram. To Photoshop or not to Photoshop: Kim says she struggles with Photoshop because she has a tendency to over-edit, and in the end, she doesn't even remember what the photo was supposed to look like!Instead, she uses Lightroom to work on her exposure and white balance, so edits there and stores her pictures. Light room can also store all her original photos, so even if she makes edits to a photo, the original will always be there. Wow! I'm so impressed with the way Kim streamlines her photography process. It's obvious that she's got things down pat because her site and her Instagram feed are just filled with beautiful, creative photos of her products. Kim's Adorable Mom Moment You'll have to tune in to hear how Kim's son Teddy is creating his own "department" within her business - so cute! Stay in Touch with Kim!
