Zein El-Amine starts off talking about the study abroad program he designed to take his students to Egypt for a range of immersive experiences, including meeting Egyptian author Nawal el Saadawi at her home.  He then talks about his deep personal connection with James Joyce's book “Ulysses”.  Matt and Zein discuss “Bloomsday” celebrations around the world, as well as the history of the U.S. government's censorship of Ulysses.  Zein then talks about the study abroad program he designed to take his students to Ireland to study Ulysses and celebrate Bloomsday in Dublin.  He shares the impact that his first trip to Ireland had on him and why he now feels like Dublin is his second home.  Matt and Zein discuss Ireland-Palestine solidarity and Zein shares how he first toured Belfast as part of a Palestinian delegation.  He then talks about the study abroad program he designed to take his students to Morocco and explains the importance of understanding “Orientalism” as a framework for de-exotifying the Arab World.  Zein then reflects on his experience being exiled, talks about his poetry collection “A Travel Guide for the Exiled”, and reads his poem “On Embassy Row”.  He then reflects on his activist trajectory in the U.S., getting kicked out of the International Socialist Organization, and founding Left Turn Magazine.  Matt and Zein reflect on why Left Turn attracted extraordinary political activists, the importance to connecting the local with the global, and the impact of Palestine solidarity work over the last 25 years.  Zein also talks about hosting the Shay Wah Nana Show and discusses his recent episode highlighting the Tanzanian government's violent evictions of the Maasai people from their ancestral lands.  FULL SHOW NOTES AVIALABLE AT: www.TheMaerickShow.com

In April, the Socialist Feminist Working Group of Philadelphia DSA hosted a gathering of 200 leftist feminists from all over the U.S.  It was the first explicitly socialist feminist national convergence in this country since 1975, when more than 1500 women gathered in Yellow Springs, Ohio for the first National Socialist Feminist Conference. Is socialist feminism making a comeback? As recent events concerning the International Socialist Organization and Worker's World Party illustrate, it is certainly badly needed.   On this fund drive special, we present a selection of interviews from our Socialist Feminist Pack, compiled by Kate Raphael and Lisa Dettmer. The pack includes authors Elana Dykewomon (Beyond the Pale), Helen Zia (Last Boat Out of Shanghai),  Tithi Bhattacharya (Feminism for the 99%; she was also the keynote speaker at the recent Philly conference), Zillah Eisenstein (The Audacity of Races and Genders), Seattle city council member Kshama Sawant, educator Lois Helmbold and activist Leslie Cagan.  They discuss the Yellow Springs conference, the resurgence of DSA, real and perceived splits between “socialists” (presumed male) and “feminists” (presumed bourgeois and white) and how women are organizing now toward a socialist future. Also included is a clip from the Third World Panel at the 1975 Socialist Feminist Conference. The post Fund Drive Special: Socialist Feminism Past, Present and Future appeared first on KPFA.

Also, we get into the original Portland Women's March, the demands and goals of the event, and why socialists need to be part of major national events to help organize them. - FB event link: https://www.facebook.com/events/198858817717576/ - From the event description: - Where: Terry Schrunk Plaza When: 10 am, January 19th The #MeToo Speak Out and Women's March is an opportunity for attendees to take the mic and share their personal experiences with sexual assault, bigotry, and gender-based oppression. This speak out will be an opportunity for collective healing and most importantly a way for us to link our personal traumas to building power to fight back. This is an event that recognizes that although sexual assault happens to everyone, it disproportionately impacts women and gender minorities, including trans people. ALL survivors are encouraged to share their stories and ideas and we want to make sure this is an event where people from oppressed groups feel welcomed and encouraged to speak about their experiences. WHAT WE CALL FOR: -Take #MeToo to the streets and organize in the workplace to build a movement to fight gender oppression and sexual assault! -Black lives matter! End police brutality and mass incarceration -Healthcare is a human right! For trans-inclusive Medicare For All and free abortion on demand -Living wage union jobs, safe working conditions, and equal pay for equal work -Dignified living conditions for people with disabilities -Families belong together and no one is illegal on indigenous stolen land! End deportations, release detainees, and abolish ICE -Rent control, and end to no-cause evictions and sweeps of homeless camps, and publically run affordable housing for all -Build a socialist feminism that is sex worker and trans inclusive ---- News hits: "Women Now Run the Military-Industrial Complex. Guest host Bhaskar Sunkara (editor of Jacobin Magazine) engages political voices Kate Aronoff and Jonah Birch in a conversation about the future of the Left: were the election results a testament to the decline of the Left, or is this a moment for a new left movement? When 13 million people in America cast a vote for a self described Democratic Socialist, is there hope to be found in a political movement propelled by the swamp in the White House? Our guests this week discuss how we got to Trump, and where we -- as progressives -- are going. Kate Aronoff is a writing fellow at In These Times, and writes for Truthout, Dissent, and the Guardian, as well as hosting the Dissent podcast. Jonah Birch is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at New York University and a member of the International Socialist Organization, and also writes for Jacobin. We’re In The Midst Of A Political Realignment by MFlowers Decades of lesser evil voting and the failed policies that have been the result are creating a political realignment in the United States. Such a realignment has been going on in other countries recently such as Spain, Venezuela, Greece and Iceland. The two major parties in the US, the Democrats and Republicans, are shrinking and more people are joining third parties or switching to be unaffiliated. We’ll discuss this political realignment and what it means with Darcy Richardson and Ashley Smith. Relevant articles and websites: Donald Trump Frees Us to Vote as We Wish by Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers Will the Democrats Put Out the Bern? by Ashley Smith The Sanders Campaign and the Left by Ashley Smith and Lance Selfa International Socialist Organization Uncovered Politics   Guests: Darcy Richardson is the author of more than a dozen books covering American political history.  Richardson’s books on American history and politics — one of which earned an Outstanding Academic Title (OAT) from scholarly Choicemagazine in 2005 — were cited in Newsweek’s “What You Need to Read” section in July 2010. His most recent book, Bernie: A Lifelong Crusade Against Wall Street & Wealth, was published by Sevierville Publishing in December 2015. Long active in third-party politics, Richardson has rubbed shoulders with some of the best-known political figures of the past three decades.  In addition to managing one of the late Minnesota Senator Eugene J. McCarthy’s campaigns and serving as a senior advisor in another, Richardson ran for Pennsylvania Auditor General in 1980 and for the U.S. Senate eight years later on the Philadelphia-based Consumer Party ticket.  In 2012, he offered himself as a protest candidate in several Democratic presidential primaries, briefly challenging Wall Street’s increasingly corrupt influence on the Democratic Party and the nation’s body politic. A resident of Jacksonville, Richardson has been quoted in major publications such as the Wall Street Journal, theWashington Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer, and has written numerous articles for a wide range of publications.  He has also been a guest on several nationally-syndicated radio talk shows, ranging from the progressive “Thom Hartmann Show” to Joseph Farah’s conservative “WorldNetDaily Radioactive” program. Darcy can be reached via email at darcy@uncoveredpolitics.com Ashley Smith is on the editorial board of the International Socialist Review (ISR) and on the Steering Committee of the International Socialist Organization. He has written on various subjects for the ISR as well as Socialist Worker, New Politics, ZNet, and Jacobin. He lives in Burlington, Vermont.

Guests: Nikeeta Slade and Alex LotortoThere's a lot of talk right now about racism, sexism, classism, homophobia and elitism within the environmental movement. But too many white liberals view the term "racist liberal" as an oxymoron.Tonight on Political Analysis, Sandy LeonVest is joined by Nikeeta Slade and Alex Lotorto to kick off an ongoing series, in which all of these issues and more will be addressed. The conversation is the first of its kind, dealing with the critical but underplayed issue of racism in (and the "unbearable whiteness" of) the contemporary green movement -- specifically the Big Greens and NGOs. Among other things, the program will look at the prickly (but all too real) issue of "liberal racism;" how environmentalists can go beyond PR, campaign slogans and tokenism to "reach out" to non-white communities; and how the current movement can begin strategizing for effective bridge-building. -- ie: the ways in which environmentalists can begin building deep diversity and REAL coalitions with communities all over the world, including with indigenous people (whom, after all, were the FIRST radical environmentalists).Nikeeta Slade is a member of the International Socialist Organization and the Green Party ... She’s been involved in feminist, environmental and anti-racist organizing for several years … She’s also an editor and contributor to Red Wedge Magazine, a radical arts and culture magazine, and an editor for The Peace Newsletter, a Syracuse based publication dedicated to peace and justice. Alex Lotorto has been an activist and organizer for the past several years – mostly around the issue of fracking. He’s been actively involved in labor organizing and union issues … Today, Alex Lotorto serves as the shale gas program coordinator for Energy Justice Network.
