Wellington Travel Guide: Why I Spent a Year Living in New Zealand's CapitalWellington is one of my favourite cities in the world, and in this episode I'm sharing exactly why.I first visited New Zealand's capital in 2013 on the Kiwi Experience and instantly connected with the city. In 2017, when Emma and I arrived in New Zealand on a working holiday visa, we spent weeks road-tripping around both islands before deciding where to settle. I already had my sights set on Wellington, and thankfully Emma fell in love with it too. We ended up spending nearly a year living there, giving us the chance to experience the city far beyond the typical tourist highlights. In this Wellington travel guide, I share the places, experiences and local tips that made the city so special to us. From riding the iconic Wellington Cable Car and exploring Te Papa Museum to walking the waterfront, climbing Mount Victoria and discovering all parts of the city, I cover the attractions that I think every visitor should experience.Of course, no episode about Wellington would be complete without talking about coffee and brunch. This is the city where my love of coffee began, and over the course of 11 months I worked my way through more cafés than I can count. I share my favourite spots for brunch, great coffee, waterfront views and local atmosphere, including some long-time Wellington institutions that I still think about today.I also dive into the practical side of visiting and living in Wellington, including where to stay, the best neighbourhoods to base yourself, transport options, day trips, travelling between the North and South Islands, and what it was like finding work while on a New Zealand working holiday visa. If you're considering moving to Wellington or spending time there as a backpacker, digital nomad or working holiday traveller, there's plenty here for you.Along the way, I share some personal stories from our time living in the city, including working in government ministries, surviving a late-night earthquake, becoming known as the office "serial monster", buying a $1,000 road-trip car and somehow making a profit when it was written off.Whether you're planning your first visit to Wellington, preparing for a New Zealand working holiday, or simply looking for inspiration for your next trip, this episode will give you an honest look at one of the most creative, quirky and liveable cities I've ever experienced. In this episode:• Why Wellington became our home for nearly a year• The best things to do in Wellington• My favourite cafés, brunch spots and coffee roasters• Where to stay and the best neighbourhoods to explore• Working holiday and job-hunting advice• Transport tips and South Island connections• Road-trip recommendations and day trips• Stories from everyday life in New Zealand's capitalSupport Winging It Travel PodcastIf you enjoyed this episode:⭐ Leave a 5-star rating or review on your podcast app☕ Support the show at buymeacoffee.com/wingingit

Planning a vacation should be exciting—not overwhelming. But between choosing a destination, booking flights, creating an itinerary, and figuring out logistics, it's easy to feel stressed before your trip even begins. At The Travel Brats, we've planned everything from last-minute city getaways to international adventures booked nearly a year in advance. Over time, we've learned that the best trips happen when you focus on smart planning without overplanning every minute. Here's our step-by-step guide to planning a vacation the right way. 1. Start With Your "Why" Before choosing a destination, ask yourself: Do I want relaxation or adventure? Am I traveling for food, culture, nature, or nightlife? Am I recharging or packing my schedule? Your answer determines everything from budget to destination to daily activities. Helpful questions to research: Is this destination better for couples, friends, or families? Is it good for digital nomads? Can I visit without renting a car? Does it offer more adventure or relaxation? The clearer your travel goals, the easier every other decision becomes. 2. Set Your Dates and Budget You don't need an exact budget, but you need a realistic one. Consider: Number of travel days Flight costs Hotel or Airbnb costs Food and drinks Transportation Activities and excursions Most importantly, leave room for unexpected expenses. A good vacation budget includes a buffer because travel rarely goes exactly as planned. Also factor in important deadlines such as: PTO approval School breaks Weddings Special events 3. Choose Your Destination Strategically Timing can completely change your experience. Ask yourself: What's in season during my travel dates? Will weather affect the trip? Is it peak tourist season? How long is the travel time? Is the destination easy to navigate? If you only have a few vacation days, shorter flights often win. We've seen travelers hate destinations during crowded peak seasons and fall in love with the same places during shoulder season. Research matters. 4. Book the Big Stuff First Follow this order: ✈️ Flights
Welcome to "Travel to Listen," a new Unpacked series hosted by veteran music journalist Tim Chester. Over four episodes rolling out every other week, Tim takes us into the cities where music is more than entertainment—it's the shortcut to a place's soul. This week, he heads to Minneapolis to hear how a community center, a cold climate, and a once-in-a-generation genius combined to create one of the most distinctive sounds in American music, plus how the city is celebrating a decade since Prince's passing. In this episode How the Minneapolis sound emerged from the Great Migration, housing segregation, rock radio, and a community center called The Way, where a teenage Prince jammed alongside Morris Day and Terry Lewis Why Paul Peterson (dubbed St. Paul by Prince himself) believes the Minneapolis sound is joyous, funky, and built to last, and how his supergroup, the Minneapolis Funk All-Stars, is carrying it forward The story of historian Kristen Zschomler: how grief over Prince's death led her to track 50+ locations across Minneapolis where he lived, worked, and recorded, and her ongoing mission to get them on the National Register of Historic Places What Prince mastered at his childhood home in North Minneapolis. Plus, why Sound 80, the studio where he cut his first demo tapes at 19, was the launchpad for everything that followed How to experience Minneapolis in 2026: from Paisley Park to First Avenue, Bunkers Music Bar to the Dakota, and the five-day Prince Celebration festival in June marking the 10th anniversary of Prince's death Meet this week's guests Paul Peterson is a musician, songwriter, and former Prince collaborator, dubbed "St. Paul" by the Purple One himself. He was a member of The Time and The Family, appeared in Purple Rain, and is now the leader of the Minneapolis Funk All-Stars, an all-star alumni supergroup dedicated to keeping the Minneapolis sound alive. Kristen Zschomler is a historian and co-founder of the International Center 4 Prince Studies. She gives guided tours of Prince's Minneapolis and created Sound Around Tours, a self-guided audio tour app. She has researched and documented over 50 locations tied to Prince's life and work, and has successfully advocated for two of them to be added to the National Register of Historic Places. Guest host Tim Chester is a freelance travel and culture writer who has spent the past 20 years exploring the world through the lens of music. His reporting has appeared in NME, Spin, and Afar, and his travels have taken him from Manhattan to Malawi and Beijing to Berlin in search of the festivals, scenes, and stories that reveal a city's soul. Now a museum and events venue. Prince's childhood home—the North Minneapolis house where he mastered the piano, decoded albums note by note, and became Prince. Sound 80 Studios—the recording studio where a 19-year-old Prince cut the demo tapes that landed him his Warner Brothers contract. First Avenue—the venue Prince made famous in Purple Rain (he also recorded the song there, performing it live for the first time on that stage). Will Blair walks through two very different fisheries—the remote flats of the Bahamas and the wild rivers of Kamchatka—and explains how both are evolving right now. This is a full-on fly fishing travel guide, from logistics to species to what actually matters once you get there.

Bhutan Travel Guide: Days 8-11, Travelling Solo, Flight To Bangkok With The Royal Family, Costs & Final ThoughtsIn this penultimate episode of my Bhutan Series on Winging It, I wrap up my 11-day trip to Bhutan and share my final experiences exploring Thimphu and Paro, plus my biggest takeaways from travelling through one of the most fascinating countries in the world. After originally planning a trek in the Haa Valley, I changed my itinerary and spent my final days wandering Bhutan's capital Thimphu, experiencing Bhutan's National Day celebrations, visiting local cafés, exploring markets, and eventually heading to Paro for my final night before flying back to Bangkok. I also give an idea of what budget day-to-day life is like when travelling solo in Bhutan.Along the way I stayed in luxury glamping tents in hills of Paro, met incredible locals, and had an unexpected moment on my flight to Bangkok when I discovered the King and Queen of Bhutan were on the same plane. I managed to speak to one of their closest advisors during the flight, which was a very interesting chat indeed! To wrap up the series, I also share my favourite experiences in Bhutan, practical Bhutan travel tips, what it actually costs to visit Bhutan, and advice for anyone planning their own trip to the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon. If you're wondering how to visit Bhutan, what an itinerary looks like, or whether Bhutan is worth visiting, this episode brings together everything I learned from my time there.Check out my previous Bhutan episodesEpisode 1 Interview with Ugyen Rinzin - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/winging-it-podcast/id1559489384?i=1000743770563Episode 2 - IMMERSIVE Hiking to Tiger's Nest Monastery - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/winging-it-podcast/id1559489384?i=1000744754502Episode 3 - Days 1-3 solo episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/winging-it-podcast/id1559489384?i=1000745691316Episode 4 - Interview with a female monk - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/winging-it-podcast/id1559489384?i=1000747763604Episode 5 - IMMERSIVE Day in Bhutan - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/winging-it-podcast/id1559489384?i=1000748856300Episode 6 - Ama Om Homestay Interview - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/winging-it-podcast/id1559489384?i=1000750963609Episode 7 - Days 4-7 solo episode - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/winging-it-podcast/id1559489384?i=1000752831510
