The 2020 US election may be the biggest crisis of bourgeois democracy since the defeat of Black Reconstruction. The past several years and weeks have been rich in lessons about the nature of the US state and its electoral system. Issues that the panelists will discuss include: the ongoing far right threat and the changing character of the Republican Party; the nature of the Democratic Party and what the left can and cannot use it for; the roots of the current political crisis in the economic crisis going back to 2008, and the impact of the pandemic; and the intersections of class, race, gender and sexuality in this current crisis. Meagan Day is a staff writer at Jacobin magazine and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. She is the co-author with Micah Uetricht of Bigger than Bernie: How We Go From the Sanders Campaign to Democratic Socialism (Verso, April 2020). Her articles have also appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, and elsewhere. She lives in Los Angeles, California. Peter Drucke's long years as a socialist and queer activist began in the US in 1978, when he was 19. Join Haymarket Books, Jacobin, and the Debt Collective for a discussion of how to build the movement for debt abolition! ---------------------------------------------------- Emboldened by the election of Joe Biden and the continued crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Debt Collective has renewed its call for the new president to cancel all student debt during his first 100 days in office. Debtors have been mocked, scolded and lied to for decades. We have been told that it is perfectly normal to go into debt to get medical care, to go to school, or even to pay for our own incarceration. We've been told there is no way to change an economy that pushes the majority of people into debt while a small minority hoard wealth and power. The coronavirus pandemic has revealed that mass indebtedness and extreme inequality are a political choice. In the early days of the crisis, elected officials drew up plans to spend trillions of dollars. The only question was: where would the money go and who would benefit from the bailout? The truth is that there has never been a lack of money for things like housing, education and health care. Millions of people never needed to be forced into debt for those things in the first place. Armed with this knowledge, a militant debtors movement has the potential to rewrite the contract and assure that no one has to mortgage their future to survive. Debtors of the World Must Unite. As isolated individuals, debtors have little influence. But as a bloc, we can leverage our debts and devise new tactics to challenge the corporate creditor class and help win reparative, universal public goods. Individually, our debts overwhelm us. But together, our debts can make us powerful. ---------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Hannah Appel is a Professor of Anthropology and Global Studies at UCLA and a political organizer. She is the author, most recently, of The Licit Life of Capitalism: US Oil in Equatorial Guinea, and serves as the Associate Director of the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality and Democracy, where she leads the Future of Finance research stream. She is co-founder of the Debt Collective, a union for debtors, and a writers bloc member for Can't Pay, Won't Pay: The Case for Economic Disobedience and Debt Abolition. David Adler is a politic economist from Los Angeles whose work focuses on the politics of internationalism. He currently serves as the General Coordinator of the Progressive International, founded in May 2020 to unite, organize, and mobilize progressive forces around the world. Previously, he served as foreign policy advisor to the Bernie Sanders campaign, policy director of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25), and was the co-founder of its Green New Deal for Europe campaign. Micah Uetricht is the deputy editor of Jacobin and host of Jacobin Radio's podcast The Vast Majority. A conversation about why capitalism has failed and how we can fight for an economy, and society, that works for the 99%. ---------------------------------------------------- Join writers and socialists Hadas Thier and Meagan Day for a conversation about the unfolding global economic and health crises and the importance of arming a new generation of activists and organizers with the tools of Marxist economics. The Covid-19 pandemic and attendant economic meltdown expose capitalism's failures more clearly than ever, and make evident the pressing need for an alternative way of understanding, and organizing, society. Thier and Day will discuss how profound inequality has determined the impacts of the health crisis, the inadequacy of free market solutions to the problems we face, the Marxist theory of economic crisis, and more. This event is a book launch for Hadas Thier's A People's Guide to Capitalism: An Introduction to Marxist Economics, a lively, accessible, and timely guide to Capitalism for those who want to understand and dismantle the world of the 1%. A podcast about political cinema and our crumbling world. Hosted by Will Sloan and Luke Savage. Before he became a conservative warrior, John Rambo was just a mixed-up vet.
Linda Sarsour, a Palestinian-Muslim-American organizer and a surrogate for the Sanders Campaign and Chuck Rocha, Bernie 2020 Senior advisor and author of 'Tio Bernie,' talk about the successes and failures of getting out the Muslim and Latino Vote. Chuck Rocha (https://twitter.com/ChuckRocha) was a Bernie 2020 Senior advisor, is the author Tio Bernie, president of Solidarity Strategies and a contributor to The New York Times, MSNBC, The Hill and CNN. The increasing number of cases of Covid-19, and of deaths, should be scary to everybody, Gregg Gonsalves says. A direct action campaign of disruption is necessary to bring the changes we need (https://www.thenation.com/article/society/protest-survive-aids-coronavirus/) —something like the Act Up movement of the eighties. Gregg is an assistant professor of epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health and the recipient of a MacArthur "genius" grant, and he writes regularly for The Nation about the pandemic. Also: We’re heading for an eviction crisis. On July 31 the direct cash payments of the CARES act expire and right now Republicans in Congress are not renewing it or anything like it. That means millions of people won’t be able to pay their rent on August 1. Why did Bernie Sanders fail?In the third in an occasional series on the US presidential election and the Left, we talk to Angela Nagle and Michael Tracey about their analysis of Bernie Sanders' campaign. We put to bed some bad arguments as to why Bernie didn't win the nomination, and examine some better ones: was the campaign was too establishment-friendly? too "left"? too middle-class? too anti-nationalist?... or are structural factors to blame instead? And we ponder the end of the union of Old and New Lefts, of cultural liberalism and socialism. And the most worrying of all: was Bernie just a blip? Michael Brooks hosts Jacobin writer Meagan Day (@meaganmday) and Jacobin editor Micah Uetricht (@micahuetricht) to discuss their new book, Bigger Than Bernie: How We Go from the Sanders Campaign to Democratic Socialism. On today's show: Trump says "we're covered 100" to attack Iranian boats. Jacobin writer Meagan Day (@meaganmday) and Jacobin editor Micah Uetricht (@micahuetricht) join Michael to discuss their new book, Bigger Than Bernie: How We Go from the Sanders Campaign to Democratic Socialism. Despite failing to win the Democratic nomination, the Bernie Sanders campaign helped build a movement that must go beyond the electoral sphere and the career of any single politician if it's going to succeed. Looking at the past, present, and potential future of leftist movements in the US, Day and Uetricht identify how labor organizing and "class struggle elections" can build working class power and continue the fight for democratic socialism. On the fun half: Gordon Brown says we must address global inequality to stop Covid-19 spread. Anderson Cooper says Vegas is a virus petri dish, Las Vegas Mayor says he's an alarmist and it's up to casino owners to figure out how to social distance. Vegas mayor offers city residents as tribute to American economy: "we offer to be a control group." Cuomo is upset about questions about protestors, says anyone upset with unemployment delays can get a job as an essential worker. Sarah Huckabee says AOC is putting people down and she might want to remember what it's like to be a bartender. Pennsylvania workers leave PPE plant after a month straight of living and working in their factory. Now that Bernie Sanders is out of the race, and we're faced with the choice between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, have the prospects for an electoral road to social democracy been dashed? Jacobin's Meagan Day and Micah Uetricht discuss how Sanders changed the terrain of U.S. politics. They argue that his defeat — rather than simply revealing the limits of left electoral politics — will ultimately be seen as a temporary setback in an era of expanding socialist struggles.
