SEASON 3 EPISODE 117: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump has already LOST the tariff wars he finally claimed he paused yesterday (without really pausing). Already. Took him only eight days. From Liberation Day to a day when in any other war, literal or figurative, he would have been deposed - 8 days. And never mind how much YOU AND I think he’s crazy; a high-priced adviser to macro fund managers says “a few have quietly wondered if the president might be insane." And after Wall Street came off the ledge and got back to where it was Monday – only, what, seven trillion lost – he declared victory. “Up 2500 points. Nobody has ever heard of it. Gotta be a record.” Because he can’t admit he made a mistake; his head would fall off. His approval numbers have cratered. He’s underwater by an AVERAGE of six points. LAST Wednesday it was an average of TWO points. Since the election he’s lost 20 points among those over age 65; he’s lost 50 points among those under age 30. And he still raised the tariffs on the Chinese again – to 125 percent – because he’s mad at them. Because they of course are winning. Because the Chinese are not negotiating; the Chinese are as they have been for centuries, waiting for their opponents to DIE. The Chinese are apparently dumping our 10-Year Treasuries, driving up our debt. And they’ve opened trading partnership negotiations with the head of the European Union. And for all the claims about pausing the tariffs, a universal TEN percent tariff will be maintained. He didn't pause anything. He simply lost everything. B-Block (27:10) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Joe Manchin writes a book celebrating his middle of the road bona fides. The cover photo shows only the right half of his face, naturally. Marjorie Stupid Greene reveals she does not know what the word "Merch" means. And the president of the hockey writers' association, a bonehead named Frank Seravalli, not only defends Wayne Gretzky's attacks on Canada but his bringing FBI Director and Election Denier Kash Patel to the Ovechkin game - and calls CRITICISM of those decisions "political BS." Instead of, maybe, calling out Gretzky for BRINGING political BS into a moment of sports history. C-Block (49:15) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: She's still at it. Even as Trump's boasts of pausing the tariffs while INCREASING them on China and maintaining them on everybody else, Laura Ingraham is still carrying his water for him. It's time for me to review my dates with her last century, and the extraordinary revelation she made during the first of them about the then-nascent Republican-Media Industrial Complex.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's Swan Signal Live unpacks a major market anomaly: on a day when the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and gold all dropped sharply, Bitcoin stayed strong—even ticking up. The team explores whether we're witnessing the early stages of a true decoupling, as more voices from TradFi, including Joe Weisenthal and Larry Fink, acknowledge Bitcoin's resilience. They also dive into Trump's new tariff strategy, branded “Liberation Day,” raising questions about trade math, inflation, and how tariffs could play into broader economic negotiations. While some call the plan misguided, the crew sees it as a blunt but intentional negotiation tactic—one that may pair with interest rate cuts to boost markets before the midterms. The show also calls out Galaxy Digital's shady Terra Luna dealings, with Novogratz dumping $100M worth of Luna while publicly promoting it. It's a clear reminder of why Swan stays Bitcoin only—to protect investors from altcoin pump-and-dumps.On Jack Dorsey's claim that Bitcoin will “fail” if it doesn't become a medium of exchange, the team pushes back. Bitcoin is following a natural monetary evolution: first a collectible, then a store of value, and eventually, a medium of exchange—driven not by consumers, but businesses who want to be paid in Bitcoin. Finally, they react to Tom Lee's $150K BTC prediction by year-end. This marked the third consecutive decline in consumer sentiment. --- A year ago during the same period, the index stood notably higher at 79.4. - Several key factors contributed to this decline. -- The Current Economic Conditions Index decreased from 65.7 to 63.5, down from 82.5 a year earlier. -- Similarly, the Index of Consumer Expectations saw a sharp drop from 64.0 to 54.2, compared to 77.4 a year ago. -- Inflation expectations also played a significant role, with year-ahead inflation expectations climbing from 4.3% to 4.9%, marking the highest level since November 2022. --- Additionally, long-run inflation expectations increased from 3.5% to 3.9%, the largest month-over-month rise since 1993. !--The overarching takeaway from the report was that the decline in sentiment affected various demographic groups across age, income, wealth, political affiliations, and geographic regions, with inflation concerns and policy uncertainty emerging as critical factors behind the drop. Key concerns include persistently high inflation, Federal Reserve policy decisions, and growing fears of an economic slowdown. While markets have shown resilience in recent months, he believes investors may be overly optimistic about the trajectory of interest rates and economic growth. - “The market has priced in a near-perfect landing,” Siegel said, referencing investor expectations that the Fed will successfully bring inflation down without triggering a recession. - However, he warns that there are still significant headwinds that could derail this outlook. Retail - Forever 21 filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in six years on Sunday and blamed fast-fashion e-tailers Shein and Temu for its demise. - The retailer's operating company is expected to cease all operations in the U.S. and has already begun liquidation sales at its mor...

How Modern Animal is using technology to make pet care more customer-centric

Most founders are loath to compare their businesses to other companies. Not the veterinary care startup Modern Animal. "We were definitely inspired by One Medical early on," said Steven Eidelman, founder and CEO of Modern Animal. "I think Tom Lee, the founder, was really a trailblazer for: How do we bring technology into health care?" The idea behind both companies was to add a technological element to health care to make the customer experience more seamless. Eidelman described the core problem with veterinary clinics thus: "As a pet owner, you and I both know the experience we have going into a veterinary clinic. And it's a little bit underwhelming -- to put it nicely, the experience is not really customer-forward." Eidelman joined this week's Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about his company's recent growth and future plans. Modern Animal, which first launched in 2020, tries to make the experience better by building its own clinics, hiring its own veterinary and technical staff, and using technology to make the entire process smoother. For an annual fee, members can get unlimited access to exam visits as well as Modern Animal's telehealth platform. It's currently available in major California and Texas cities, and will be opening new locations in both Colorado and Arizona later this year. "We offer primary preventative care," Eidelman said. "We offer urgent care, and we offer our care digitally. We do dentistry, we do surgery. What we don't do is we don't do after hours," Eidelman said. While the business is health care, Eidelman believes the key to success is thinking about it from a retail perspective. At the end of the day, the core underlying business model that we are building has not really ever been built in the veterinary industry," he said. "And that is: we are building a retail footprint, a sort of box-driven business."

Today's episode is on "Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell", a 2008 film about the singer, instrumentalist, composer, collaborator, and all-around musical pioneer whose work has become more widely recognized well after his untimely passing. The movie is directed by Matt Wolf. Our guest today is Matty Monroe, the person behind the Indieheads subreddit and general knower and lover of all things indie music. Wild Combination is a biography of a man who was hard to know. He didn't leave a lot of surviving interviews, spoken audio, or writing. But he left behind a vast trove of music which is still being discovered and released. The film reflects on his beautiful relationship with his longtime partner Tom Lee, his parents, Chuck and Emily Russell, and the many musicians and artists who had the opportunity to work with Arthur. Plus there are some weird vibes from Rock Docs regular Allen Ginsberg. Arthur Russell's music is singular and transporting, and the movie is a fine tribute to the man and his work.
