Healing from trauma and sexual trauma is not about completely erasing it but becoming aware of triggers and managing them better over time. While trauma may still arise, it no longer controls daily life or interactions, showing growth and resilience. In this episode, Cara and I dive into the journey of healing from trauma and or sexual trauma in your 30's and 40's —not by erasing it. It is hard to imagine violence on the scale that occurred 30 years ago this spring in Rwanda. But for our guest, Odette Nyiramirimo, she doesn't have to imagine, she can remember. We are so honored to have Odette on our podcast. She is not only a medical doctor who with her husband founded the first private maternity and pediatrics clinic in Rwanda as well as being a doctor for the Peace Corps, she also served as a senator and as Minister of State for Social Affairs under the government of Paul Kagame. Her account of the genocide is featured heavily in book “We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families” by Philip Gourevitch and is also depicted as a character in the film Hotel Rwanda. She now believes that wellness is the path to helping continue the reconstruction, so she founded the Rushel Kivu Lodge on Lake Kivu, where we had our meditation retreat. Last month when we were in Rwanda, we got to sit down with Odette in person and listened to her life story of what it was like growing up in that country during the growing escalation and then the genocide that took so many including 16 of her 17 siblings and other family members. We also got to hear about how, through her work in both medicine and politics, she played a major role in the rising of Rwanda from the ashes. We hope you appreciate hearing Odette's story as much as we do. By hearing her firsthand account, it made the atrocities that happened in Rwanda all those years ago seem very real for us and so much more than a historical event. We wish to acknowledge with utmost respect the lives of all those who lost their homes, their families, their livelihood, their health, or their lives during the violence of the 1994 genocide and all the Rwandan conflicts the late 20th century.“From that time, I never sit. I work every day. I cry when I am telling those stories but the other time I say no crying. I need to make sure no more genocide happen in Rwanda. That my children, my grandchildren, my neighbor's children they need to have a countrywhere they feel safe. Not the country where I grew up.” - Odette NyiramirimoShow Notes:2.00 Odette´s Childhood6.30 1959 and the beginnings of the Genocide10.30 “If we have to die, we die together, but here.” Odette´s Father.13.00 First Private Clinic in Rwanda and the Peace Corps15.40 Surviving the Genocide23.40 “We think the war is finished. Three decades ago, on April 7th 1994, the genocide and State-sponsored extermination of Rwanda's minority Tutsi minority began. The country was gripped by a wave of unprecedented violence that lasted 100 days and resulted in the deaths of 500,000 men, women and children.“Here you had neighbours killing neighbours, priests killing parishioners, doctors killing patients, teachers killing students,” recalls New Yorker staff writer Philip Gourevitch, interviewed on today's In The News podcast. And while reports and images of these horrific atrocities filled newspapers around the world, the international community just stood by and watched.“Everybody had pulled out and left them, other African countries had betrayed them, no one had come to their defence,” says Gourevitch, whose harrowing account of the genocide We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families was published in 1998. “The lesson of the Rwandan story at that moment in time, in a global sense, was the people who depend on the world for their protection are unprotected.”Following the Rwandan genocide, and the Srebrenica massacre a year later, world leaders pledged never again to stand by and allow such atrocities to unfold. And yet, in the three decades since, millions of citizens have been murdered or starved in conflicts across Africa and the Middle East.Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Produced by John Casey. We WISH more multi-seven-figure business owners would tell you how they did it. How often have you seen someone ‘giving it all away' on Instagram and when you click on the post they say the BIG SECRET to making 7 Figures is ‘Don't Give Up!' or maybe it's that you need to ‘Just Give More Value!' Whilst they are true NEITHER of them are helpful, and they're definitely not the secrets that are going to ACTUALLY get you a 7 figure business and beyond. So today we're giving you all of OUR advice and have built you an ACTUAL roadmap that will take you there. Now, this episode isn't ONLY for those who want a 7-Figure business - it applies to ANYONE who wants to grow their business be that 500k or 5k. In this episode, we're talking about how we use social media content to DRIVE sales, how to take someone from a cold lead to sold and why we are moving into webinars. AND not just that this week's lessons of the week are pretty vulnerable, you'll hear what we're struggling with at the moment (spoiler: you might be too!) and how you can get back to being YOU and making bank. We share:

Kat reluctantly agreed to give Scandalous John a second chance. She really did not enjoy this film but D absolutely loves it. In retrospect...it is so entertaining. Brian Keith's portrayal of the alcoholic and excentric gun happy John McCanlis is something not to be missed. We WISH someone out there would watch this movie and let us know if they felt like they were living in a fever dream like us. This lawsuit, which also implicates figures like Meek Mill and Usher, albeit indirectly, is more than just a legal battle; it's a narrative that reveals the intricate web of relationships, power dynamics, and controversies that lie beneath the surface of the music world. Our deep dive into the Rodney Jones Jr. vs. Diddy lawsuit peels back the layers of allegations and defenses, shedding light on the complexities of this high-stakes legal drama. We explore the claims made by Jones against Diddy, which allege not just professional disputes but also delve into more personal and sensitive accusations involving other industry giants. The involvement of Meek Mill, though not named directly in the lawsuit, brings an added layer of intrigue, given his own history with the legal system and the broader conversation about justice and reform it sparked. As we navigate through the details of the lawsuit, we also touch upon the vehement denials by Diddy's legal team, who have painted Jones as a figure motivated by financial gain, casting doubt on the veracity of his claims. This battle, set against the backdrop of Diddy's storied career and the legal sagas of figures like Meek Mill, offers a unique window into the challenges and trials faced by those in the limelight. But this episode isn't just about dissecting legal documents and court proceedings. It's about understanding the human stories behind the headlines, the resilience of individuals like Meek Mill, who turned his legal struggles into a platform for advocacy and reform, and the broader implications of such high-profile cases on the industry and its culture. Okay, excuse our post past life regression fog, but this ep is a trip! This thursday Morgan starts us off by following up on Andrew Basiago, covering Paul Dienach. Have you ever wondered what happens while you're in a coma? Well, we're not sure this is the case for everyone (literally we're positive that it's not) but Paul claims to have been living in the year 3000..... Jo Bros?? No. We Wish. actually the year 3906. When Paul came out of his coma, he wrote over 800 pages about what the future would be... and he was right... Oh did we mention, Paul experienced all of this in 1921.... yeah, just listen. Its good asf Taylar wraps it up covering the case of Bible John of Glasgow. Three women with extreme similarities were murdered at the hands of an unknown serial killer in the late 1960s... We're heading into largely uncharted horror waters this week with our guest Nat Cassidy. Nat's debut horror novel, Mary: An Awakening of Terror dares to confront one of the last true taboos of horror fiction. No, it's not cannibalism, or necrophilia, or the bowel movements of Tucker Carlson … no… it's the menopause. That's right. Female physiology. The horror, the terror, think of the children!!!Nat and I talk about why horror shies away from the topic of middle age and menopause, and why he was inspired to tell this story when he was just thirteen years old. We talk about Stephen King and Carrie and their lasting influence. And we look back at the worse year of Nat's life, and how it helped fuel the writing of Mary.We also promise (and fail) to talk about Bruce Springsteen, our shared north star. Watch this space for more on that in the future.Enjoy!Mary: An Awakening of Terror is published on July 19thth by Tor NightfireOther books discussed in this episode include:We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families (1998), by Philip GourevitchCarrie (1974), by Stephen KingParasite (1980), by Ramsey CampbellSupport Talking Scared on PatreonCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

What you see is the comment on social media. The angry reaction. The eye roll. The snarky tone. You snap at the waiter. At your kid. At your boss. At your husband. Your blood is boiling. "I didn't mean to," or rather..."I wish YOU had not heard that."
