The rift between Elon Musk and Republicans is about to get worse. The New York Times reports that in an extraordinary Oval Office meeting, President Trump's senior agency heads fought bitterly with Musk. They are angry with him because they themselves know the cuts by his so-called Department of Government Efficiency will produce all kinds of fiascoes at their agencies. Tellingly, they expressly don't want to take the blame for what Musk is unleashing! We talked to New Republic staff writer Kate Aronoff, who has a good new piece about some of DOGE's hidden impacts. If access to care is so expensive, why are care workers so poorly paid? Historically, feminist discourses have looked at how ideology structures how we understand and value care work. However, in this discussion Alyssa Battistoni makes the argument that we need to update and develop these arguments, to provide a better answer to this question.  Alyssa Battistoni is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Barnard College. She is the co-author of A Planet to Win: Why We Need a Green New Deal (Verso 2019), with Kate Aronoff, Daniel Aldana Cohen, and Thea Riofrancos. Her next book is called Free Gifts: Capitalism and the Politics of Nature, and will be published with Princeton University Press in spring 2025. Her writing has appeared in publications such as New Left Review, The Nation, Dissent, n+1, Boston Review, and Jacobin. Her most recently published article, and the topic of this discussion, is titled Ideology at Work? Rethinking Reproduction, and appeared in American Political Science Review earlier this year.  SUPPORT: www.buymeacoffee.com/redmedicineSoundtrack by Mark PilkingtonTwitter: @red_medicine__www.redmedicine.substack.com/

Amid the threat of “Project 2025”, ongoing genocide in Gaza, and a nation-wide battle over reproductive rights, to name a few major issues, the climate crisis has been considerably sidelined in the US election taking place on November 5th. But even if it's not grabbing headlines, what the United States does — or does not do — on climate has profound implications for the entire world.   So where does climate stand in this election? With Kamala Harris praising both the Green New Deal and her role as a champion of fracking, how should we understand the Democratic position on climate? What is the legacy of the Inflation Reduction Act, and does it even register with voters? What, if anything, is the future of the Green New Deal? And, for the many people who don't feel represented by either major party, is a third party, or not voting, the answer? These are big questions — here to help us answer them are two brilliant guests, journalist Kate Aronoff and Democratic strategist Waleed Shahid. In this special episode, Adrienne, Kate and Waleed unpack the chaos and the stakes of the US election, and what it means for climate action in the US and beyond. Kate Aronoff is a journalist, Staff Writer at the New Republic and Fellow at The Roosevelt Institute. She is also the author of books including Overheated: How capitalism broke the planet — and how we fight back (2021), and A Planet To Win: Why We Need a Green New Deal (2019).  Waleed Shahid is a Democratic strategist and movement organiser. He previously served as the Director of Communications for the Justice Democrats, the political initiative that worked to elect “The Squad” and helped to launch The Green New Deal in the US. Hun også har udgivet bøgerne A Planet to Win: Why We Need a Green New Deal og Overheated: How Capitalism Broke the Planet.

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Kate Aronoff, staff writer focusing on climate at the New Republic, to discuss the upcoming COP28 climate summit. First, Sam runs through updates on Israel and Hamas' tenuous truce, Saudi Arabia-Iran relations, growing aid for Gaza, the potential for the US conditioning aid to Israel, the martyrdom of George Santos, Nikki Haley's big Koch endorsement, and challenges to Iowa's right-wing legislation, before diving into the absurdity of the GOP now refusing to hold public testimony over the Biden Crime Family investigation. Kate Aranoff and Sam then dive into the UN's Conference of Parties (COP), an international meet and greet on climate change with both state and private actors invited, which has seen the signing of documents like the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, and its problematic (and unsurprising) relationship with major state and private actors involved in the production of fossil fuels. After parsing through some major examples – and why they genuinely represent the UN's goals in “solving” climate change – Aranoff wraps up by assessing the future (and future corruption) of the Conference of Parties. And in the Fun Half: Sam discusses the Senate's growing drive for conditioning aid to Israel amid the IDF's losing PR battle (due to outrageous war crimes), Ryan from Wisconsin helps Sam parse through the USDA's official updates on fruit hardiness, a Canadian caller tackles Canada's role in thwarting Maine's Pine Tree Power initiative, and Mike Johnson and Fox try to speak for the facts of the Hunter Biden case. Sam also parses through the recent discourse around Joe Biden's economy, Jeremy Boering and Tim Pool try to solve racism via a purge-like catharsis, and Tom from Chicago brings the Daily Wire's newest film into the conversation. Emma hosts Kate Aronoff, climate reporter for The New Republic, to discuss her recent pieces regarding environmental social and corporate governing, or ESG. Then, she's joined by Trita Parsi, Executive Vice President at the Quincy Institute, to discuss his recent piece in Foreign Affairs entitled "How China Became a Peacemaker in the Middle East", co-authored with Khalid Eljabri. First, Emma runs through updates on the abortion pill ban, the bailout of Credit Suisse, the rising probability of a recession, smog regulations, a potential freight rail merger, and statistics on COVID's impact on pregnancy deaths, before parsing through Ro Khanna's relationship to Silicon Valley and squaring his progressive positioning with his David Sacks fundraising. Kate Aronoff dives right into the recent GOP push (passing through both the House and Senate) against “Woke” Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) policies, watching Kevin McCarthy attempt to paint these programs as authoritarian mandates forcing retirement funds to invest in a left-wing agenda. Next, Aronoff walks Emma through the relationship of this Right-Wing project to their greater agenda of dismantling the administrative state, before they step back to tackle the actual relationship between ESG and major corporations, like BlackRock and Vanguard, looking at how these policies provide a path for rehabilitation of public opinion alongside copious tax breaks, while executives lobby behind the scenes to ensure that the policy never evolves to actual corporate regulation. Wrapping up, Emma and Kate explore the impact of Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, and the future of environmental incentivization and regulation. Trita Parsi then jumps into the revelatory role of China in brokering a normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, completely changing their previous stance on foreign policy, and showing that they must be taken seriously on the international stage when it comes to diplomacy. Next, they tackle the particular failure of the US' multi-decade disaster in the Middle East, setting ourselves up as an inflammatory and biased outside actor that bends over backward for our allies, before they wrap up the interview with an assessment of the US elite's China hawkery and the role it continues to play in the US' refusal to promote Middle Eastern autonomy. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they tackle the revelations of Ron DeSantis' various policies, from utensils to Ukraine, talk with Adam from Manhattan about the corruption behind our current financial moment, and Matt Lech goes all out on the conservative exploitation of hunger and poverty. Expanding on this, the crew tackles Minnesota State Sen. Steve Brazkowski's denouncement of a school hunger program, and Jason from Minnesota calls in to give his take on the issue. Then, they are joined by Jonah Furman of Labor Notes and author of the Who Gets The Bird? newsletter on SubStack to discuss the recent labor updates across the country, including the impending U.S. federal rail strike. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the UC teachers' strike, the tally of over 400k early voting ballots in GA, Arizona suing an Arizona county over refusing to certify the election because of another Arizona county's minor shenanigans, the upcoming marriage equality vote, and various Supreme Court ongoings, before parsing through Kevin McCarthy's analysis of the GOP's shortcomings during these past midterms. Kate Aranoff then joins as she explores what COP27 actually is, what environmental policy is being discussed, and who the major actors at the conference are – from the actual national delegates to the private companies' observers. After tackling the particular role of petrol states at the conference, Kate, Emma, and Sam walk through the history of the UN's climate change conference and the policy it has sponsored, with the US consistently throwing its weight against any compensatory funds for poorer nations or any policy that attempts to hold developed countries responsible for the environmental impact of their climate policy, as seen specifically with the Kyoto Protocols, before diving deeper into how COP27 has seen that begin to change, writing in a loss and damages fund. They wrap up the interview by tackling the actual material impact of these conferences and the US's obstructionist actions. Next, Jonah Furman walks Sam and Emma through the particular labor obstacles presented for organizing Railway labor action, exploring the early passing of the RLA well before unionization took hold in the US, and how it creates countless federal obstacles to labor action in the industry. They wrap up by tackling the recent action taken by Joe Biden, in lockstep with Schumer and Pelosi, to push forward his rejected contract, and discuss where the workers' fight can go from here. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through Tim Pool's recent fiasco of an interview with Kanye, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Nick Fuentes, as they get to the heart of Kanye's anti-semitism claims, ponder the Jewish vote, and more. The CERAWeek conference took place this week in Houston. CERAWeek is an annual gathering of major players in the energy sector; CEOs, government officials, and financiers are among the conference's attendees. The major theme this year, of course, was the effect of Russia's war in Ukraine on global oil and gas markets — in particular, President Joe Biden's announcement Tuesday that the U.S. would move to ban imports of Russian oil. The New Republic's Kate Aronoff was there in Houston to witness the conference. In the season 1 finale of Leftist Teen Drama, Maria is joined by Emma and Dondré as we discuss the recent emergence of post-apocalyptic teen dramas like THE WILDS (2020-present), THE SOCIETY (2019), and DAYBREAK (2019). We talk about everything from the Gen Z/millennial climate anxiety present in all three scenarios to the way these shows answer the questions, “how will we survive? Where will we get food from, or shelter?” We also discuss the huge parallels between THE WILDS and reality shows, particularly controversial teen reality show KID NATION (2007). Although these scenarios speak to apocalyptic climate anxiety, we find nuggets of hope in the ways the teens join together to help everyone survive; the queer love that thrives in all three shows; and the fact that here, in the present, we have the ability to organize for a Green New Deal and avert the apocalypse.  For this episode, we recommend you first watch and/or have general familiarity with THE WILDS Season 1, streaming on Prime Video; THE SOCIETY Season 1, streaming on Netflix; and DAYBREAK Season 1, streaming on Netflix. It has become impossible to deny that the planet is warming, and that governments must act. But some believe that a new denialism is taking root in the halls of power, shaped by decades of neoliberal policies and centuries of anti-democratic thinking. One such is journalist Kate Aronoff, who has written about the climate change fight in her book Overheated: How Capitalism Broke the Planet and How We Fight Back. Aronoff joined us, in conversation with author and environmentalist Bill McKibben, to explore her account that examines the forces that she contends have hijacked progress on climate change. Since the 1980s, Democrats and Republicans have each granted enormous concessions to industries bent on maintaining business as usual. And worse, Aronoff said, policymakers have given oil and gas executives a seat at the table designing policies that should instead be the end of their business model. Aronoff argued that this approach will only drive the planet further into emergency. Drawing on years of reporting, she layed out an alternative vision, detailing how democratic majorities can curb pollutors' power; create millions of well-paid, union jobs; enact climate reparations; and transform the economy into a more leisurely and sustainable one. Our future, Aronoff, challenged, will require a radical reimagining of politics–with the world at stake. Kate Aronoff is a staff writer at The New Republic, and a former fellow at the Type Media Center. Her work has appeared in The Intercept, The New York Times, The Nation, Dissent, Rolling Stone, and The Guardian, among other outlets. Aronoff is the co-editor of We Own the Future: Democratic Socialism, American Style and the co-author of A Planet to Win: Why We Need a Green New Deal. Bill McKibben is an award-winning author and environmentalist. His 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change. He is a founder of 350.org, the first planet-wide, grassroots climate change movement. A former staff writer for the New Yorker, he writes frequently for a wide variety of publications around the world, including the New York Review of Books, National Geographic, and Rolling Stone. In 2014, biologists named a species of woodland gnat—megophthalmidia mckibbeni—after him. Buy the Book: https://www.elliottbaybook.com/book/9781568589473  Presented by Town Hall Seattle. Sam and Emma host Kate Aronoff, staff writer at the New Republic, to discuss her new book, Overheated: How Capitalism Broke the Planet -- And How We Fight Back, on how we got to this stage in the climate crisis and policy solutions needed to slow climate change in the coming decades. They cover a bit of background, taking on the effect of Right-wing think tanks and oil money on bolstering the role of the fossil fuel industry as a part of the U.S. identity, pushing the “crisis” element to the side and working to undermine cross-racial solidarity among the industrial working class. Aronoff explores the failures of the policy focus on carbon pricing, allowing Republicans to build up the perfect blueprint for striking down any potential policy, before Sam and Emma explore her takes on moving towards a sustainable future, focusing on investments in a workforce that incentivize a shift towards renewable energy while bolstering the country's economy and identity. They round out the interview with a discussion of Green New Deal reforms in Europe, and the importance of recognizing U.S. oil exports as central to our carbon footprint. Then, Sam and Emma appreciate John Yarmuth's choice to stand by Ilhan Omar and the squad after Democratic leadership threw them to the side in the face of racialized misogyny from the Right, chat about Mitch McConnell's tactics for taking on the reconciliation bill, and discuss the recent Manchin zoom leaks. And in the Fun Half: Brandon, Emma, and Sam talk through Manchin's zoom leak, covering how he plans to maneuver around filibuster reform, how Dems keep avoiding hard decisions, and how that can change moving forwards, then watch Bishop William Barber take on Manchin's failure to stand up for the WV working class. Tucker Carlson whips up some conspiracy theories about the role of coconspirators in the Jan 6th conspiracy and how the FBI was secretly the conspirators this entire time, then Ivory Hecker's attempt to vocalize objection to Fox's favoring of marketing over news is undermined by some truly horrible Project Veritas editing, Stephanie from MN calls in to discuss the Republicans' turn on the teacher's union, and Republican Chris Pringle stunningly has to do more research on Critical Race Theory before he can really answer questions on his proposed bill to ban it. In the second part of our conversation and collaboration with the Coffee with Comrades podcast, we begin seeking out works of literature, cinema, and scholarship that might illuminate Anti-Anti-Utopian blueprints for building new worlds. As Matt remarks, it's virtually impossible to come up with a list of films that would be called utopian, but Pearson argues that you could – in fact – come up with a robust list of fiction and non-fiction texts that spell out the shape of this new genre of hope-making. A developmental syllabus of Anti-Anti-Utopian study may start with Ursula K. Le Guin's iconic and epic “ambiguous utopia,” The Dispossessed (1974), and include Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy of novels (1992-96), as well as  nonfiction books like Erik Olin Wright's Envisioning Real Utopias (2010), Alex Williams & Nick Srnicek's Inventing the Future: Postcapitalism and a World Without Work (2015), and A Planet to Win: Why We Need a Green New Deal by Kate Aronoff, Alyssa Battistoni, Daniel Aldana Cohen, and Thea Riofrancos (2019). These visions of still imperfect, but radically more just & egalitarian worlds teach us that striving toward the utopian horizon is neither naive nor impractical, but instead all too necessary and prudent, especially now. As such, The Golden Square affirms that the decommodification of life and democratization of society are not just revolutionary goals, but in fact, the revolutionary project itself. Beyond the ceaseless academic obsessions with diagramming the corpse of our dystopian hellscape, we must chart a path outside our pyramid-shaped cages by realizing the unconditional rights to food, shelter, healthcare, and education for every person on earth – a readymade threshold separating us from the Utopian Sphere. Moving outward, Pearson, Jesse and Matt talk about the key planks that might make up the political philosophy of Anti-Anti-Utopia and how charting an emancipatory path forward requires an intersectional anti-capitalist compass magnetized to the many symbiotic, multilectical transformations necessary to abolish empire. As Matt has been fond of saying of late: “Be like an anarchist,” first and foremost. We also talk about the problems with neoliberal attempts to address climate change, how capitalism is at the heart of the climate crisis, and why we need a Green New Deal. COVID has in many ways monopolized the public imagination in the last year or so, and at times it’s seemed like many other conversations were put on hold — or at least had their volume turned down. Now, with the threats of COVID subsiding — at least in the U.S., and at least for the time being — we’re remembering some of the other important conversations that need to be picked up again. Perhaps the most pressing of all is the conversation around climate change. In this Conversation, we spoke with Thea Riofrancos, Associate Professor of Political Science at Providence College, and co-author, along with Kate Aronoff, Daniel Aldana Cohen, and Alyssa Battistoni, of "A Planet to Win: why we need a green new deal," published by Verso. When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declared that Biden's administration had exceeded progressives' expectations, she caused fury: from some on the US left who believed it sowed undeserved illusions in the US President, and from conservatives who believed it confirmed his dangerous radicalism. What's the truth?I'm joined by author Kate Aronoff and leading political organiser Waleed Shaheed to discuss whether the US left has won meaningful concessions, what the failings and problems of the Biden Administration are - and what strategy the left should now pursue.Help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Because this is not the Earth of Joe Biden's childhood. This week, we take a break from the inside-the-beltway negotiations, zoom out, and ask the important questions: Is the stable foundation of human civilization unraveling? Does anyone or anything have the power to hold the apocalypse at bay? Journalist David Wallace-Wells synthesizes climate science to deduce whether we are still living on planet Earth, and what it means for the future if we're not. Then journalist Kate Aronoff takes us on a tour through inadequate solutions and false hopes for planetary salvation, before explaining why the U.S federal government, for better or worse, has the power to stop the apocalypse -- or to seal our fate.Waleed reveals he is actually an animal rights activist before having an existential crisis about the absurdity of American politics. Our guests and their work:The Uninhabitable Earth: LIFE AFTER WARMINGBy DAVID WALLACE-WELLSOverheated: How Capitalism Broke the Planet--And How We Fight Backby Kate AronoffAdditional readings and references:Carlos Maza's video essay ‘Why you still don't understand the Green New Deal'What Does '12 Years to Act on Climate Change' (Now 11 Years) Really Mean?Q&A: How do climate models work?Scientists have gotten predictions of global warming right since the 1970sSPECIAL REPORT: GLOBAL WARMING OF 1.5 ºC: Summary for PolicymakersWhat would it take to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C?The Paris Agreement set an unrealistic target for global warming. Your worm compost is cute, but we can't stop climate change unless we stop the fossil fuel industry. Author Kate Aronoff joins Francesca and Nato in The Bitchuation Room to talk about how both activists and a nosediving oil market are making the case for a different future. Perhaps one that involves a rethinking of our relationship to "land, life and labor" through a Green New Deal? Plus we decide who would go in our "Garden of American Heroes." Featuring: Kate Aronoff, Francesca Fiorentini, Nato Green Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Twelve candidates took to the stage for the fourth round of the Democratic presidential debate in Westerville, Ohio, Tuesday to spar over healthcare, foreign policy, impeachment, gun violence, economic inequality and more. Senator Elizabeth Warren — who is now leading some national polls — repeatedly came under attack from her rivals. In the first debate since Senator Bernie Sanders suffered a heart attack two weeks ago, the Vermont senator advocated for a Green New Deal, Medicare for All and a wealth tax. Former Vice President Joe Biden attacked the proposals of both Sanders and Warren and faced scrutiny for his son Hunter's dealings in Ukraine. We host a roundtable with Intercept senior contributor Mehdi Hasan, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston and journalist Kate Aronoff. On this week's special bonus episode, ClimateKitten45 and CarbonYeti27 kick things off by scheming on how to get a million YouTube subscribers. Then we expand to become a fantastic foursome of climate podcasters when we welcome (10:23) writer Kate Aronoff (In These Times) and writer/sociologist Daniel Aldana Cohen (U Penn), co-hosts of the Hot & Bothered pod (hosted by Dissent Magazine). We talk about why we all got started podcasting and how it helps us to seem generally less like killjoys and maybe save a few friendships. Daniel and Kate explain how H&B got started, how they bridge climate and labor politics through their work and we ruminate about what we do and don't know about our respective audiences. We cover the challenges of communicating expertise in an alternative facts moment, the current government vendetta against the environment, greentech fantasies, the prospects for low carbon populism and a green New Deal, catastrophe porn, the problem with non-unionized green jobs, and how to frame climate change as potentially also bringing positive change to our world. We ask who are the people of climate and how can they be better mobilized and then decide that low carbon hedonism could probably sell itself. We close on dense affordable housing and rural electric cooperatives as important sites of political action to address climate change. Stay hot, stay bothered, dear listeners, and catch up on back episodes of Hot & Bothered at https://www.dissentmagazine.org/tag/hot-bothered, on iTunes or at the low carbon (hedonist) audio provider of your choice!
