this episode is sponsored by Betterhelp.com/TheBarnIn 2024, HARVESTMAN, the brainchild of Neurosis' Steve Von Till, embarks on its most ambitious journey yet with the release of Triptych, a three-part album project set to coincide with three full moons throughout the year. With the first installment, Triptych: Part One, set to drop this Tuesday, April 23rd on the Pink Moon via Neurot Recordings, Steve was a recent guest on the Vulgar Display of Podcast in which he talks about the album and creative process.Triptych represents Von Till's exploration of a unique musical approach, weaving together diverse influences and musical elements into a cohesive tapestry that resonates with ancestral echoes. Recorded and mixed at The Crow's Nest in North Idaho, Von Till employs an array of instruments and techniques, including guitars, synths, percussion, and more, to craft each movement with meticulous care. Here are the visualizers for both "Psilosynth" and "Give Your Heart To The Hawk".Part One features guest contributions from luminaries such as Dave French of Yob, Al Cisneros of Sleep and OM fame, and John Goff of Cascadia Bagpiper. With masterful mastering by James Plotkin and striking artwork by Henry Hablak, Triptych: Part One is set to be released on various formats, including LP, CD, and digital platforms, with a special Bone White + Black Galaxy Effect vinyl variant packaged in a unique dub style jacket. At its core, Triptych is a testament to Von Till's deep engagement with the musical lineage that precedes him, offering a glimpse into the primordial forces that shape our collective consciousness. Drawing inspiration from ancient sites and folklore, Triptych is a sonic meditation on the enduring otherworldliness that resides within us all. Triptych invites us to transcend the constraints of time and immerse ourselves in a world where music becomes a portal to the sublime. With Triptych: Part One set to launch on April 23rd, HARVESTMAN invites us to join them on a voyage of sonic discovery, where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur, and where the echoes of the past reverberate into the future.www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.
Today's guest deejay is Aidan Baker. I came across Aidan on one of my deep dives on Bandcamp and was struck by his music. Aidan, a Canadian musician currently residing in the creative hub of Berlin, has an impressive repertoire that spans solo work and collaborations with notable groups like Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble, and WERL Baker's musical ingenuity is particularly evident in his experimental guitar playing style, which draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists, including Caspar Brötzmann, James Plotkin, Steve Albini, and Justin Broadrick. It's a pleasure to have him curate this episode's mix, a captivating compilation that showcases his unique musical sensibilities. Want to hear more beautiful music? Just last week, Aidan released his new album, Tense Surfaces. I've been listing to it while I write today's show notes while an ocean breeze wafts its way through my windows. It's a lovely experience. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Mark O'Shea of the Winter-Light music label. See you then. Invisible Oranges editors Jon Rosenthal and Ted Nubel, joined by An Evening Redness's Brandon Elkins, sat down with Khanate members Alan Dubin and James Plotkin to talk through the band's surprise-released newest album. We talked about how Khanate crafts their torturous, long-form extreme music and what led to the band's resurrection.

With a musical history rooted in experimental electronics, minimalism and techno, Jim has now found himself deep into Buchla. Drawn to the incredible sound and superior user interface, he started with a Music Easel and now is working with full 100 and 200 Series systems. In addition to his solo work, Jim had performed / recorded with: Sample and Fold,Collections of Colonies of Bees, Volcano Choir, Bon Iver, Dartanjal, Jon Mueller, Marcus Schmickler, Bhob Rainey and James Plotkin among others and had released music on: Zod, Toxic Recordings, Jagjaguwar, Nobody Owns Records, Table of the Elements, Addict Records, Topscore USA and Crouton Records. "After building up the 100 series system I started to apply some of theconventions that I've used working with my 200 Series system. I learned that, because of the 100 Series early designs and limitations, these conventions and ideas quickly turned into something really different... and wonderful." Each of the 9 pieces (assembled together in this program) were recorded live in one take to two track stereo, no edits or overdubs. Only audio processing is end of signal chain reverb. A two-hour mix for the longest night: Winter Solstice. To be played (and hopefully enjoyed) in the deepest darkness. "Dream All The Dark Away" ... --- originally published on Ambientblog --- December 21 is the longest night in the Northern hemisphere. It marks the start of Winter (even though it is also called "Midwinter"), but gradually the nights will slowly get shorter as to indicate spring will be coming, eventually. For the 2019 Winter Solstice, Dutch Radio station Concertzender Nederland programmed an 8-hour ambient music special from 23:00 until 07:00 (11pm to 7am). That's a good night's sleep for most people! My contribution was scheduled to close the night: from 05:00 to 07:00 (5am to 7am). For the context of this ambient night, I created a mix that is somewhat different from most Ambientblog.net mixes - after all, this was intended to be broadcast in the deepest hours of the darkest night of the year. So this one is more drone-oriented for the most part, slower, less 'dynamic' and less 'intense'. James Plotkin is a legend of underground music. Active for the past three decades as a guitarist, composer, producer and mastering engineer, his influence across a broad range of adventurous music cannot be overstated. From his earliest days with Regurgitation to his participation in Khanate, one of the most influential metal bands of the last twenty years, James has been steadily contributing to the language of modern dark music. He is also a lynchpin of the 5049 label, having mastered all but one of our releases. For this talk we go back ton his earliest days in Jersey, hanging out with Morbid Angel as a teenager, making electronic music, mixing and mastering records and a whole lot more. James Plotkin is a first rate artist who deserves serious attention.
Grindcore band Old Lady Drivers, or OLD, ended their four-album run in 1995 with the wildly eclectic Formula. Despite the title, Formula is anything but, swapping heavy guitar dirges for tape loops, synths, drum machines and lots of experimentation. Switching gears from Napalm Death to electronic instrumentals might have failed in the hands of lesser musicians, but James Plotkin and Alan Dubin manage to create a compelling, hypnotic record. Karlynn Holland moved to New York City in 2007 after graduating with Honors from the University of Chicago. She has since designed logos and contributed album artwork to a number of musical acts, including Krallice, Dysrhythmia, Theolgian, Deafheaven, James Plotkin & John Meuller. In 2011, she began a series of black walled, one day art shows at Saint Vitus Bar in Greenpoint, NY. Titled "Dreams Were Made For Mortals", these shows have included works by 65 individual artists including Terrence Hannum of Locrian, Samantha Marble, Vincent Como, Seldon Hunt, Valnoir Artfield Lautrec, Jane 'Pain' Chardiet, Paul Romano, Jeremy Hush, Dilek Baykara and Dan Bones. DJs for the event have included David Castillo, Kevin Hufnagel, Brandon Stosuy, James Plotkin and Nikki Sneakers. The next Dreams Were Made For Mortals will be Sunday January 12, 2013 at Saint Vitus Bar, 6pm-1am. Most recently, Karlynn starred in Sannhet's music video 'Slow Ruin' which premiered earlier this month on Noisey, designed a monogram and an illustration for Kevin Hufnagel's latest solo album 'Ashland', and is participating in "Skulls: A Death Head's Gallery" at Saint Vitus Bar this Thursday, October 24.
