Ďalší víťazný monument posunul Slovinca do vedenia v monumentálnom mikrosúboji s MVDP, so skóre 9:8. Obaja si z jari odvážajú zhodne po dva monumenty a zvyšok sveta sa môže na pár týždňov chvíľu nadýchnuť. Pogačar aj Van der Poel si totiž pripnú čísla na chrbát až pred Tour de France. Lance Curran of Chicago post-hardcore band With Patience joins host Jason Schreurs to talk about the survivor's guilt he felt after a friend of his committed suicide when they were 14. An episode that dives deep on the truth about autism. Here's what's in store for today's episode: * In today's episode, Matt and Angela dive into the controversial discussion surrounding "profound autism."* It turns out that "profound autism" isn't a clinical term, but rather a label used by the ABA industry to restrict the number of autistic advocates who can speak for themselves.* Calling it "profound autism" is more profitable than saying "level 3 autism" because it creates a sense of urgency, making it easier for the ABA industry to secure funding and promote more intervention-based services.* In this episode, we explore the connection between giftedness and autism, and how gifted individuals face higher rates of addiction and substance abuse.* The autism levels are directly tied to capitalism—how much money you can make often depends on how well you can mask your symptoms.* Our hosts also discuss how terms like "indigo children" and "highly sensitive persons (HSPs)" are often just euphemisms for being autistic.* Then, we dive into the ABA industry, the issues with Autism Speaks, and the impact of helicopter autism parents who prevent their children from learning and growing.* We also talk about autistic pattern recognition and how it can sometimes feel like we're psychic, picking up on details others might miss.* Matt and Angela discuss how pattern recognition can also serve as a survival skill, and how burnout manifests in everyone who is autistic.* We elaborate on how autistic individuals can be more prone to substance abuse, often as a way to cope with sensory overload, social challenges, or unmet needs.* Then, we dive into the concept of being a functional alcoholic and explore the connection between substance abuse and giftedness.* We discuss Dan Harmon, creator of Rick and Morty, and how his autistic burnout led to struggles with alcoholism and missed deadlines.* Finally, we explore reframing autism in terms of "masking levels" rather than outdated "functioning" labels.“What people don't understand is that, when it comes to the autism, we just have the autism. It might have some comorbid characteristics with other stuff - for instance, ‘profound autism' might have some intellectual disability. But it doesn't change the nature of the autism, it just changes the operating system that you're working with. It changes the hardware that you're working with.” - Matt“The autism is the autism. It is the hyper-connected brain. It is the hyper-connected brain. It is the genetic underpinning that changes everything about us.” - Matt“You could be gifted, but God forbid the word ‘autistic' with no qualifiers just comes out of your mouth. I don't know what happens. I think God throws Zeus a bolt of lightning. Something must happen.” - Angela“I have had periods in my life where I actually thought I must be psychic because these things would happen. I'd be like, ‘my god, I think I'm psychic. And then I realized, ‘shit, I'm just pattern matching.” - AngelaDid you enjoy this episode? We explored the controversial label of "profound autism" and how it's used to limit autistic self-advocacy. We also dove into the connection between giftedness and substance abuse, the role of pattern recognition as a survival skill, and the cycle of burnout and underemployment in the autistic community. Plus, we break down the issues with Autism Speaks, the ABA industry, and helicopter autism parents. Inspired by true events, Orlando Wells' irreverent and anarchic comedy tells the story of two scientists tasked with embalming the body of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin for public display. It's 1924. Lenin is dead. Stalin has seized power and his shadow falls over the lives of millions of Russians. A group of senior Bolsheviks, the self-proclaimed Immortalisation Commission, request the services of two scientists to aide their cause: ensure the Revolution's survival by building a shrine to their deceased messianic leader. The country's future hangs in the balance; the Communist regime is still in its infancy and a personality cult might be instrumental in legitimising Russia's new overlords. It has been one year since the start of the war in Gaza. What started with an appalling crime was repaid with further crimes and relentless tragedy. This week on The New Arab Voice podcast, on the anniversary of the start of the war in Gaza, we look at three aspects: health, justice, and future. What is state of healthcare in Gaza? What is the timeline for international litigation? Can Israel be protected by its allies? Is the ICC still a deterrent? What will the 'day after' in Gaza look like? Who will pay for the reconstruction, and will the situation every be suitable for reconstruction? And who will govern Gaza in the future. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Edna O'Brien (1930-2024) The great Irish novelist and playwright Edna O'Brien died at the age of 93 on July 27, 2024 after a long illness. A controversial figure from the start, her first novel from 1960, The Country Girls, which dealt with sexual and social issues in Ireland following World War II, was banned in Ireland and denounced on the pulpit, and while she moved to London with her husband before publication, she never moved back to her native land. This interview was conducted in the KPFA studios on April 28, 2000 while she was on tour for her novel, “Wild Decembers,” third in a thematic trilogy of novels set in the recent past in Ireland. It was later adapted for television in 2008.. Of Edna O'Brien, from Wikipedia, the novelist Andrew O'Hagan wrote, “She changed the nature of Irish fiction, she brought the woman's experience and sex and internal lives of those people on to the page, and she did it with style, and she made those concerns international.” In her lifetime, Edna O'Brien wrote seventeen novels, several plays, eight short story collections, eight works of non-fiction, four children's books and a collection of poems. Edna O'Brien continued to write novels and plays well into her nineties. Her final novel, Girl, was published in 2019. This interview was digitized, remastered and edited in August 2024 and is heard for the first time in its entirety. A second interview, recorded in 2003 while in San Francisco working on her play “Triptych” at the Magic Theatre will be posted on a later date. John Sayles discusses his latest novel, “Jamie MacGillivray, The Renegade's Journey,” along with his work as a writer and film-maker, with host Richard Wolinsky. Second of two parts. John Sayles is best known for his work as a director, screenwriter and actor, though this is his sixth novel. Among the films he directed are Lone Star, Sunshine State, Eight Men Out, Matewan, The Brother from Another Planet, Baby It's You and Passion Fish. His acting credits include small roles in several films, and he wrote the screenplay for the films he directed. Complete Interview. The great Irish novelist and playwright Edna O'Brien died at the age of 93 on July 27, 2024 after a long illness. In s3e54, Platemark host Ann Shafer talks with Andrew Raftery, artist, professor, scholar, and wallpaper designer. Andrew works in several modes, most notably in engraving. The through line in the work is domesticity. An early print featured a young man suit shopping. Next was a portfolio of engravings detailing rooms during a real estate open house. Then engravings representing each month in the life of a garden were transferred to twelve dinnerplates and sold as a set. His latest show included watercolors depicting historical interior rooms that feature French and Chinese wallpapers. He also produces letterpress wallpapers himself. Ann and Andrew talk about how engraving shows itself completely—there is no secret to how it is made, the inscrutability of Vermeer's paintings, the importance of understanding the history of prints, how the transfer process works with ceramic dinnerware, how French and Chinese wallpapers were made (some were hand painted!), and hatboxes. Images of Andrew's art are by Erik Gould; Andrew's headshot is by Ned Lochaya. Andrew is represented by Mary Ryan Gallery. Andrew Raftery (American, born 1962). Human Resources, 1990s. The Nose is off. In its place this hour, a look at the current controversies swirling around certain celebrities: Catherine, Princess of Wales hasn't made a scheduled public appearance since last year. Kensington Palace announced in January that she was having “planned abdominal surgery.” The internet was dissatisfied with that explanation. And then some photos this month, including one that the Princess admitted to doctoring, have left the internet, let's say, even less satisfied. And: Dan Schneider has been described as “the Norman Lear of children's television.” His Nickelodeon shows launched the careers of people like Amanda Bynes, Ariana Grande, Keenan Thompson, and others. But a new docuseries, Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, brings together a number of previously known stories and allegations with some new information that, altogether, paints an ugly picture of what was going on behind the scenes — and often even on the screen — on Dan Schneider's sets. And finally: Director Jonathan Glazer's acceptance speech at this year's Academy Awards included this passage: “Right now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people. Whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?” At the ceremony, people applauded. Since the ceremony, (some) people have responded, uh, less kindly. In any case, the Oscars have a long history of political controversy. SynopsisOn today's date in 1918, the Metropolitan Opera in New York offered the world premiere performance of not one, not two, but three new operas by Giacomo Puccini. The three one-act operas are collectively billed as Il Trittico, or The Triptych. In order of their presentation at the Met, the triptych consisted of Il Tabarro (The Cloak), a rather sordid tale of passion and murder, followed by a sentimental tear-jerker titled Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica, after its Romantic heroine), and, for a comic finale, Gianni Schicchi, titled after the resourceful hero of its comic plot.Musical America reported a warm welcome for the three new Puccini operas, but did find Il Tabarro “in the main, black and brutal.” In that journal's opinion, the hit of the evening was the comic opera, Gianni Schicci. In particular, one brief soprano aria from that opera so pleased the first-night audience that it had to be encored.Over time, this little aria, “O Mio Babbino Caro,” has become one of Puccini's greatest hits and has even cropped up in the soundtracks of movies such as A Room With a View and G.I. Jane.Music Played in Today's ProgramGiacomo Puccini (1858-1924) Gianni Schicchi; Angela Gheorghiu, soprano; London Symphony; Antonio Pappano, cond. EMI 56587
