+ Nephew..... (og gud, hvor er det en typisk liste;).
Tertulia dedicada al pensamiento y la reflexión, la genialidad de Les Luthiers, cumpleaños de David Sylvian, la importancia de las bandas sonoras en el cine, relato evocador sobre el silencio

There are always some central pillars to a great party playlist - songs that just work. One of those is the Joan As Police Woman song Holy City. The song is always an instant hit at parties, guaranteed to elicit excitable inquiries as to “who is this?”. That instant reaction. The song is a #1 hit in my family - one of those multi-generational family life tracks. But if Holy City is instantly likeable, with a great beat and a strong poppy hook, it's somewhat uncharacteristic of Joan's music, which is mostly the opposite: seductive slow burns that take their time to become loved. It's what Joan herself refers to as the eternal quandary of a life making alternative and original songs in today's music business. “A lot of people are just really busy and they don't have time to figure out what this incredible new music is that might require 10 listens until you're hooked”. Then again, after some time away from Joan's music, it was another of her singles that I was immediately drawn to, the smouldering, unhurried jazzy ballad Full Time Heist, from her new album Lemons, Limes and Orchids. This song, written as a cynical ode to one of life's chancers, is my song of 2024 and enters into the canon of my all time favourite songs. That's two for Joan and makes her increasingly one of my very favourite artists. Joan is the ultimate collaborator - entirely comfortable with creating in the moment no matter who she works with - and some of her collaborators have been bona fide music royalty, including Tony Allen, Rufus Wainwright and Damon Albarn (and also David Sylvian although their recording sessions have yet to see the light of day - something I only discovered after my chat with Joan). But an effective collaborator as she is, Joan makes her own records, literally. Right from the start her 2007 debut Real Life was entirely self-funded, subsequently shopped around to labels that would be willing to take it to market. She had a little bit of help for her first E.P. from - of all places an independent record shop in Derby, England. Indeed, store owner Tom Rose of Reveal Records created his own label just to get Joan's first songs on the market. Tom happens to be Joan's manager to this day. Going back through the catalogue, it is striking just how high the quality of Joan's solo output is, most notably her stunning Sophomore record To Survive (2008), the ultra-cool collaboration with Tony Allen and Dave Okumu The Solution Is Restless (released during the pandemic in 2021). And now Lemons, Limes and Orchids - yet another creative high water mark for an artist whose songs have a classic, timeless quality. The obvious question is how does such an uncompromising, singula artist even survive in today's content-flooded music business?“I practice daily to avoid the whole ‘compare and despair'. Keep the focus on myself and make the best music I possibly can and then I'm a happy person”. If she is happy, we should be too - and lucky to have her making such wonderful music. Ali Jafri is a multi-instrumentalist known for his involvement in various projects - as a member of David J's live band, playing rock- sitar for Pigface (or through his projects ARIEL, The Gotham City Drugstore, Saintfield or his solo work and so much more. His newest project is called The Shadow Majlis and his debut album called The Departure. This album has been Jafri's means to address his grief over losing his seven-year-old son Oisín, who passed away in September 2022 after a nine-month battle with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (a highly aggressive form of brain cancer), the dissolution of his conjugal relationship, and a year-long state of temporary homelessness. Produced and mixed by three-time Grammy Award winning producer David Bottrill (Peter Gabriel, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Tool, David Sylvian, Mastodon, Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Real World Studios), with Darren McGill engineering the album. As a tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto on the first anniversary of his passing, Caro C talks to Richard Barbieri, Natalie Beridze and Carsten Nicolai, aka Alva Noto, three musicians who were fortunate enough to collaborate with him. Here, they share some insights into his mindset and methodologies. Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:44 - Richard Barbieri09:04 - Natalie Beridze 19:45 - Carsten Nicolai / Alva Noto Ryuichi Sakamoto BiogRyuichi Sakamoto was a multi award-winning keyboardist, songwriter, composer and producer who along with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, became pioneers of the electronic music genre in Honsono's band Yellow Magic Orchestra.Prior to his success with the band, Sakamoto earned a B.A. in music composition and worked as a session musician and producer. Alongside his success with the band, he continued his solo work, releasing solo albums and collaborations, experimenting with various genres and fusing traditional with electronic. This work led to him scoring more than 30 films throughout his career, his most famous being Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and The Last Emperor. In his later career he composed a multimedia opera, sampled a glass building for use in one of his works and traveled to the Arctic to record the sound of melting snow.Richard Barbieri BiogHailing from London, Richard joined the British band Japan in 1975 and saw huge success around the world until they split in 1982. He continued to work with David Sylvian, as well as Sylvian's brother, Steve Jansen on separate projects. He reunited with Sylvian, Jansen and bass player Mick Karn for the Rain Tree Crow project and continued to play with Steve & Mick as part of ‘JBK'. In the early 1990s, the three of them teamed up with Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson as part of No-Man and it was here that Barbieri and Wilson would begin their long musical association. Porcupine Tree had initially been a Wilson solo project but he recruited Richard in 1993 and over the next 17 years, became one of the shining lights of the neo-prog / pop scene, embracing a more heavy style as the years went on. Reuniting in 2021, they released the first Porcupine Tree album in 12 years with 2022's ‘Closure/ Continuation', a critically acclaimed return to form. Richard has a large body of solo work which he started to release in 2005 and still does to this day.http://www.richardbarbieri.co.uk/Natalie Beridze BiogNatalie Beridze is a Georgian music composer and songwriter. Since 2003 Natalie has been performing live concerts worldwide, and has been known as the first female electronic music artist from Georgia. She also creates works for piano, orchestra and choir, which have been performed by a number of artists and the Tbilisi state opera orchestra. Her recent compositions for piano, keyboard, soprano and tape are part of the ongoing program of Zurich based KioskEnsemble.Beridze, alongside Nika Machaidze teaches songwriting and music production at CES (creative education studio).https://natalieberidzetba.bandcamp.com/Carsten Nicolai / Alva Noto BiogUnder the pseudonym Alva Noto, Carsten Nicolai is one of the best-known representatives of contemporary electronic music. His various musical projects include collaborations with Ryōji Ikeda, Mika Vainio, Iggy Pop, Blixa Bargeld and Ryūichi Sakamoto. With the latter, Nicolai composed the score for Alejandro González Iñárritu's Oscar-winning film The Revenant, which was nominated for a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Critics Choice Award and a Grammy.https://alvanoto.com/Caro C BiogCaro C is an artist, engineer and teacher specialising in electronic music. Her self-produced fourth album 'Electric Mountain' is out now. Described as a "one-woman electronic avalanche" (BBC), Caro started making music thanks to being laid up whilst living in a double decker bus and listening to the likes of Warp Records in the late 1990's. It's fair to say 2023 has been a year for Caroline Polachek. Her second solo album soared into our hearts on Valentines Day, and stayed there. It solidified her place as one of the most remarkable musicians operating today; her voice as one of the most incredible of our time, and her output an unflinching celebration of art in all forms. Sonically, visually, and spiritually, Caroline Polachek defies genre and time. She's just a marvel.Desire, I Want To Turn Into You has topped many best of lists this year, and it's Double J's #1 album of 2023. So what an absolute treat to see out this year with the woman herself, and Take 5. Volcano's have featured heavily in her live shows, and capture the energy of what she does in every way. So I asked her to pick “volcano songs” and she really delivered. From wild American composers to glitchy electronic trailblazers, and the mysterious world of Sault... this is a joy for the senses, the heart, and the mind.Harry Partch – Daphne of the Dunes David Sylvian – Before the BullfightGreetje Bijma & Oceanic – Step Snakes Pink Floyd – The Great Gig in the SkySault - Air

Last month, we lost Ryuichi Sakamoto, who was an absolute monster of an artist and since hearing the news I've been going back and listening to a bunch of his catalog, which is not only massive, but it's also incredibly diverse. There are certain artists whose work allows you to see the world differently. If they're really good, they might even allow you to feel it differently. Ryuichi Sakamoto was one of those artists. He worked across multiple musical genres and he was able to tap into and even affect different aspects of the human experience. I think the first piece of Ryuichi's music I heard was Forbidden Colors, which is a vocal version of the theme to a film he scored and acted in alongside David Bowie called Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. It was also the first of what would be decades of brilliant collaborations with former Japan frontman David Sylvian. A friend in college had reintroduced me to David, who I was familiar with from Japan, but it was his solo record Secrets of the Beehive, which featured Forbidden Colors as a bonus track, that introduced me to Ryuichi and I've been a fan ever since.LINKSYellow Magic OrchestraBrandon StosuyDocumentary about the piano that was damaged by the 2011 tsunamiasyncAsiaRoger DeanTales From Topographic OceansHugh SymeStorm Thorgerson Mick RockEric MeolaHipgnosisReid MilesCONNECT WITH MEWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com Twitter: @jefferysaddoris Instagram: @jefferysaddorisSUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Almost Everything in your favorite podcast app to get more conversations like this. As part of Japan, Richard Barbieri soon became the thinking person's synthesist, famous for his rich and textural electronic backings that beautifully complemented the work of other band members to forge what is still a unique sound to this day. Disbanding at the height of their fame, Richard went on to work on a wide array of projects, some with fellow members of Japan, one of which introduced him to Steven Wilson. He joined Porcupine Tree in 1993 and, aside from Wilson, is their longest serving member to this day. After a twelve year hiatus, Porcupine Tree reconvened to write and record ‘Closure / Continuation', their 11th and, some would say, best album to date. Rob Puricelli managed to catch up with Richard during rehearsals for the first leg of their tour to support the album and began by asking him about his first exposure to, and experience of, electronic music.Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:16 - What was your first experience of electronic music?03:33 - The Non-Musician 06:44 - Synth Heroes 10:05 - Do the old synths still have a place in your work?12:37 - Sound Design and your go-to synth16:26 - Sampling19:36 - Using Reason25:37 - The live rig and touring with Porcupine Tree in 2022/2332:11 - Getting the band back together33:55 - Spatial Audio38:26 - The new album44:57 - Regurgitating the past46:30 - What gear excites you today?LINKS/CREDITS Music clips provided by Richard BarbieriRichard Barbieri's Artist Page - https://kscopemusic.com/artists/richard-barbieri/Porcupine Tree Website - https://porcupinetree.com Richard Barbieri BiogHailing from London, Richard joined Japan in 1975 and saw huge success around the world until the band split in 1982. Richard has a large body of solo work which he started to release in 2005 and still does to this day.Rob Puricelli BiogRob Puricelli is a Music Technologist and Instructional Designer who has a healthy obsession with classic synthesizers and their history. The King Collaborator from King Crimson. Ever the crafty guitarist, Robert Fripp has always been open to musical collaborations with artist from all over the music landscape. Today we feature just a handful of those joint efforts, with appearances by Brian Eno, David Byrne, Andy Summers, David Sylvian, Daryl Hall(!), and Peter Gabriel. This is the good stuff . . .
A few months ago a friend and I were talking about King Crimson & Robert Fripp. He is not as familiar with Fripp's work as I am so I started a playlist of not just Crimson tracks but also other excellent Fripp guitar work with other artists such as Brian Eno, David Bowie, David Sylvian, Hall & Oates(yes, Hall & Oates!) & others. This week I decided to finally make a mix of some of the tracks. I wasn't sure if or when I'd post it online. Then this morning I see that today, Oct. 19th, is the global premiere of the King Crimson documentary "In The Court Of The Crimson King: King Crimson at 50". What a perfect coincidence! I guess that makes the decision for me about when to post the mix. So here it is - a collection of some of my favorite Fripp guitar work. In order to keep the length manageable I had to leave out some great tracks like Bowie - Heroes, King Crimson - Lark's Tongue is Aspic, Talking Heads - I Zimbra, Fripp & Eno Heavenly Music Corp. & several others. I think the tracks I settled on cover a wide range and fit together nicely over the 84 minutes of the mix. If anyone is interested the documentary will be shown in a special streaming event this weekend on Oct. 22nd. Episode 82 Psychedelic Japan, Part 2 Playlist Wha Ha Ha, “On the Floor” from Wha Ha Ha (1983 Recommended Records). This group released three records in 1981, all in Japan. Recommended Records, the UK-based record maker, released this compilation of tracks taken from all three of those records. The group Wha Ha Ha ended at that point but its four principle members went on to varied musical careers. Akira Sakata is an alto saxophonist, Kiyohiko Semba is a percussionist, Mishio Ogawa is a vocalist, and Shuichi Chino is a keyboardist and electronic musician. 10:08 Merzbow, “Untitled 1” from Material Action for Two Microphone (sp) (2nd version) (1984 artist cassette). Masami Akita is one of my long-time favorite Japanese electronic/noise practitioners. He would send me cassettes back in the 1980s and I've always tried to keep up with him. Not strictly a Japanese psychedelic artist, I include him here primarily because, like some of the other artists in this podcast, he has widespread influence on other genres of Japanese electronic music. This prolific Japanese noise artist has released over 500 recordings since 1979.Recorded at Merzbau. Tape, Recorder, Synth, Effects, Kiyoshi Mizutani; Tape, Violin, Electronics, Effects, Masami Akita. Early cassette by Akita. 22:30 Yoshiaki Kinno, track 4 from unknown cassette, 1984.Japanese guitar and saxophone improviser. In the 1980's he established a cassette label featuring a wide range of improvised music. 3:32 Boredoms, “Boil Out UFO” from Boretronix 88' (1988 Mega Scum Groove Inc.). I think this is their first cassette release, going back to 1988. Boredoms (ボアダムス), alternatively known as V∞redoms, is a Japanese experimental/noise/space rock/tribal drumming band from Osaka, founded in 1986 by Yamatsuka Eye. Known for their extended jams and heavy drumming, it is remarkable that they had some mainstream success in the 1990s. Bass, Hira; Drums, EDA; Drums, Vocals, Yoshimi P-We; Guitar, Yamamotor; Music by, Boredoms; Words By, Vocals, Tibetan Bell, Effects (EQ-phasing), cassette tape manipulation, electronics, Eye. 2:18 Boredoms, “Untitled” (excerpt) from Boretronix 3 (1990 Ltd.). Another early cassette release from Yamatsuka Eye on his private label. This cassette consists of remixes of unreleased Boredoms material and fully explores the noise and rhythmic aspects of their work. This is an interesting prelude to their latter, more cohesive works. Bass, Hira; Drums, EDA; Drums, Vocals, Yoshimi P-We; Guitar, Yamamotor; Music by, Boredoms; Words By, Vocals, Effects (EQ-phasing), cassette tape manipulation, electronics, Eye. 12:01 Otomo Yoshihide, “We Insist? A) Rinko-Gun; b) x-Day” from We Insist? (1992 Sound Factory). Japanese experimental musician, turntablist and guitarist. Additional musicians on these tracks, Bass, vocals, Numata Jun; Guitar, Saito Ken-ichi; Vocals, performer (Junk), Lim Soowoong. 5:37 Omoide Hatoba, “Satellite Groove” from Kinsei (1996 Birdman). Japanese psychedelic, alternative, experimental -rock band. Alto Saxophone Isamu Kawamura, Yoshimi Yamazaki, Bass, Vocals, Drums, Percussion, Synthesizer, Drum Machine, Atsushi Tsuyama, Drums, Takashi Ogushi; Drums, Computer, Tape, Chew Hasegawa, Guitar, Vocals, Violin, Percussion, Piano, Synthesizer, Drum Machine, Seiichi Yamamoto, Tenor Saxophone, Satoshi Kawanishi, Trumpet, Yoshimi, Written by, Omoide-Hatoba. 3:53. Omoide Hatoba, “Alternative Funkaholic” from Kinsei (1996 Birdman).

Video for 'Mosaic' https://vimeo.com/705175081 Behold the pearl, a phenomenon singular in nature. An evolutionary eccentricity, a manifestation of inadvertent beauty. Effulgent objects fashioned by perfect mistake. Each a gemstone forged by the living: a consummate union of the biological and the geological. This in mind, consider 'Yeoville,' the latest from artist Brendon Moeller. Listen to its radiant accords, or chords of radiance. Swirl, and unfurl, its amber waves of dub. Locate in echoes its memory — or yours. And then, so attuned, hear it: the breath of the machine. Iridescent. Organic. The process of transmutation, one thing becoming another. It is a blessing undisguised. 'Yeoville was recorded in my basement home studio between August and November of 2021. Ambient music has been a huge part of my life since around 1986 when I was listening to David Sylvian and Cocteau Twins. Releases by KLF, The Orb and Angelo Badalamenti would inspire me to dive even deeper. The inspiration for these tracks was a desire to create drones and rhythmic drones. There's no greater feeling than getting all the machines droning, then kicking back in the studio and letting the ambience roll on for the rest of the day. It's a great pleasure and honor to share these tracks with you. I hope they bring you as much joy as they have me.' - Brendon Moeller Written and Produced by @brendonmoeller Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studios NY Artwork & Video Direction by Candace Price Words by Chris Zaldua Worldwide Distribution: Space Cadets Limited © Mysteries of the Deep MOTDLP014, 2022 mysteriesofthedeep.net

Self-taught and greatly inspired by Charles Mingus and British and American rhythm and blues, Percy Jones plies his craft with a repertoire of glissandos, harmonics, and three-finger riffage, among other techniques, in his work as a jazz-fusion prog-rock master. A composer, arranger, sideman, collaborator, multi-instrumentalist, and solo recording artist, Percy has anchored several watershed sides, most notably as a member of Brand X, and with Brian Eno, Roy Harper, Steve Hackett, David Sylvian, and Tunnels to cite a very select few.Percy Jones Playlist
