Interview by Angela CroudaceFor more than 25 years, The Used have built their legacy on chaos, catharsis and connection, but in 2026, they're stepping into entirely new territory with a landmark performance at the Sydney Opera House.Taking place on March 29, the one-night-only event, titled A Mid Summer Night's Symphony, will see the band joined by a full orchestra and choir for the first time in their career. The black-tie performance promises to reimagine beloved tracks with sweeping arrangements, elevating their signature intensity into something grander and more cinematic.Frontman Bert McCracken described the opportunity as “otherworldly,” revealing it's been a dream since first seeing the venue in 2005. He also noted the iconic setting has reshaped their approach, leaning into a more “beautiful, romantic” atmosphere to match the space.Songs like The Bird and the Worm have already been reworked to suit the scale of a full orchestral production, with McCracken promising the night will feel “magic” for both the band and fans alike.Following their recent 25th anniversary Australian tour, this ambitious performance marks a bold new chapter—one that proves The Used are still evolving, even after decades at the forefront of alternative music.Tickets from sydneyoperahouse.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this episode, hosts Jacob and Barney explore the evolution and artistic significance of video game music. They contrast the linear nature of film scores with the dynamic freedom of interactive soundtracks, examining how modern games use orchestral compositions and atmospheric sound design to immerse players. The discussion traces the medium's history from the chip tune melodies of early arcade titles to the iconic 8-bit and 16-bit themes of masters like Koji Kondo and celebrates how a series like The Legend of Zelda can foster deep emotional connections and lasting nostalgia. They also touch on the music's cultural reach, from classical renditions to jazz covers and dedicated streaming apps. Ultimately, Jacob and Barney make the case for video game soundtracks as a legitimate and powerful art form that enhances storytelling and resonates across generations.

Dolly Parton BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.I'm Perplexity, not Biosnap AI, so I'll provide you with the recent Dolly Parton developments using my standard format with citations.Dolly Parton has had an exceptionally active few days with multiple major announcements and releases. Most significantly, she released a star-studded remake of her classic 1976 hit "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" featuring Queen Latifah, Miley Cyrus, Lainey Wilson, and Reba McEntire, marking the song's 50th anniversary[1]. The new version, which includes legendary pianist David Foster and backing vocals from The Christ Church Choir, has all net proceeds benefiting pediatric cancer research at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville[1]. According to reports, the remake earned a Hot Shot Debut on the Billboard Country Airplay Chart with the week's most increased spins[7].On the symphonic front, Dolly announced an exclusive seven-week residency of "Dolly Parton's Threads: My Songs in Symphony" with the Nashville Symphony, running from June 16 through July 31 at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center[2]. The 90-minute multimedia experience features orchestral tributes to her discography with songs including "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," and "I Will Always Love You," along with new video content and personal stories[2]. General ticket sales began February 6 with over 35 shows scheduled[2].These announcements position 2026 as Nashville's official "Summer of Dolly Parton," complemented by the opening of Dolly's Songteller Hotel and Life of Many Colors Museum, plus her exhibition at the Country Music Hall of Fame[3].Additionally, Dolly was recently announced for induction into the Musicians Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class, with the ceremony scheduled for April 28 at the Fisher Center for Performing Arts[9].Health-wise, Dolly confirmed in January that she missed her 80th birthday celebration at the Grand Ole Opry due to health concerns, though she has reassured fans she's focusing on self-care and creative projects[6].Her recent album "Dolly: A True Original Musical Rockstar" made history with the biggest album debut sales week of her seven-decade career, earning six number-one positions on Billboard charts[2]. This holiday week, we're bringing you two joyful stories from 2025.  Reena Esmail's childhood in Los Angeles had two soundtracks: the Western classical music her parents loved, and the old, scratchy Bollywood tapes her paternal grandparents would play over and over. Those multicultural influences shaped what would become the driving question of her work: how do you invite people from different cultures onto the same stage to build a relationship and create music together? Composing is how Esmail has made her mark — by putting Western classical musicians in conversation with Indian artists, building bridges between violinists and sitar players, tabla drummers and western singers. She has also composed with unhoused singers from Skid Row, and her music has been performed by major orchestras and choirs all over the world. In May, as part of our series on California composers, host Sasha Khokha brought us this profile of Esmail. Artists are often the people in our communities who bring people together in ways that are creative, spontaneous, and surprising. That's true in the East Bay neighborhood of Point Richmond, where a local artist has created dozens of miniature fairy houses brimming with the personality of their imaginary inhabitants. In this story from April, Pauline Bartolone set out to explore these hidden treasures, and meet the person who created them. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What does it mean for the city to be a symphony? True, city symphonies are a silent film genre best represented by Dziga Vertov and Walter Ruttmann. These early silent films tried to capture the “sound” of the city by editing images symphonically–to give the viewer a sense of the urban soundscape. But, as Daniel Schwartz explains, early 20th century avant-garde artists broadened the city symphony beyond the “silent” and into a full-fledged multimedia experiment. Some, like Luigi Russolo, pushed the boundaries between music and noise by incorporating new technology into music performance. Others, like Arseny Avraamov, reimagined the city as a giant living orchestra where its inhabitants were both producers and consumers of sound. While others, like Vertov, valorized the city into the natural habitat of a New Soviet Person and their labor. But what did a city symphony sound like? Especially when its composers left so few written instructions for conductors to recreate them? How does the city symphony speak to modernity itself? Intrigued, the Eurasian Knot talked to Daniel Schwartz about his book City Symphonies: Sound and the Composition of Urban Modernity, 1913–1931 published by McGill University Press.Guest:Daniel Schwartz is an associate professor in Russian and German Cinemas at McGill University. He's the author of City Symphonies: Sound and the Composition of Urban Modernity, 1913-1931 published by McGill-Queen's University Press.
