Anthony Rey Perez has just the right tone for this satirical debut novel, especially as he aptly mimics the protagonist's self-justifying voice and truth twisting. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss how Perez's pace moves the story forward—no matter the circumstance. Javi Perez succeeds until he doesn't by playing the victim “trifecta”: tragic circumstance (his drug-dealer father is gunned down); struggling economics; and being a person of color. This first-person novel about his rise and fall is compelling, and Anthony Rey Perez's excellent narration makes it a memorable audiobook.
This week I sat down with my friends Javi Perez & Victor Borbolla. They wear many hats. Husbands, business owners, models, actors, and motivating queer role models. I chatted with them about being examples of inspiration for the community and what it takes to have a successful marriage.
It's time to turn in your receipts for the petty cash and declare "Dishes are done, man," because the hosts (and a special guest star!) are here for the cult classic "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead." This 1991 film may have faltered at the box office, but it found a dedicated fan base through cable and VHS rentals, encouraging a generation of Gen X kids and older Millennials to yell "I'm right on top of that, Rose!" at work. While Raf doesn't count the movie among his favorites, two of its biggest fans remain Sarah and the podcast's first-ever guest star, Javi Perez. Together, this nostalgic trio celebrates the truly wonderful performances of Christina Applegate as Sue Ellen, Joanna Cassidy as Rose, and Keith Coogan as Kenny. The group also discusses the delightful 90s fashion and music choices the film makes. However, it's not all about Rose-colored glasses. Upon revisiting the movie, the hosts find plenty of examples of toxic behavior. Is Bryan a good boyfriend, or the worst kind of nice guy? Is the Crandell mom too passive-aggressive? Would the fashion show outfits really work as school uniforms? Let's pour a big bowl of Cap'n Crunch cereal and find out.
Gamechangers LIVE, hosted by Sergio Tigera (@speakerserg) is very proud to welcome Javi Perez. Javi's story is incredible, but even more incredible is the way he was able to bounce back from a life-changing tragedy. In April 2016, Perez, the popular principal at South Dade High School, was cheering his son among the players at their T-Ball game at Tamiami Park. The normal afternoon turned nightmarish within moments as a drunken driver plowed her SUV onto the field. As he shielded others, he was hit directly and pinned beneath the vehicle. Despite quick action by an off-duty police officer applying tourniquets to his bleeding legs and transport to the hospital, the outcome was far from certain. His wife, Maytee, family, and friends prayed for his life as the medical teams did everything they could. Intense surgeries, 100 blood transfusions, and an induced medical coma followed with the news about being unable to save his legs. The literal and figurative crippling reality was met with a determination to make his way back. Family, faith, and support of the community combined with his willingness to endure thousands of hours of physical therapy and constant meetings/treatments with many specialists. He spent two months in intensive care, then another two-and-a-half in rehabilitation. In adapting to prosthetic limbs, right side below the knee and left above, he will essentially be in physical therapy for the rest of his life. With as many as six sessions a day scheduled, he was often sapped of energy. “There were times I didn't want to do it, but a little voice told me I couldn't let all these people down – family, friends, members of the community.”
Episode 77 is here already! Yes, just four days after our last try at this, here we are with more! Blame LAFC, as a bunch of news, a new signing, two more draft picks, and the first practice of the season has ALL happened in the last four days!Unlike half of MLS, LAFC actually used their two Day 2 SuperDraft picks! We are happy to welcome Jorge Gonzalez and Younes Boudadi to the Black and Gold! With our first practice in the books, LAFC unveiled three trialists, including a huge name in the MLS record books, Bradley Wright-Phillips! Back with the boys was last year's third keeper and friend of the pod, Phillip Ejimadu! Sadly, no Tyler Miller or Steven Beitashour, as LAFC begins a season without either of the two for the first time. We welcome to the club a kid with TONS of potential, Ecuadoran National Team member Jose Cinfuentes! Do yourself a favor and YouTube his goal against the U-20 USMNT. He could be a stud! We also welcome back (did she really ever leave?) Alicia Rodriguez, as she re-ups with Angels on Parade. It sounds like she actually may have received a little promotion in the process, or at least more work to be done. The LAFC family is richer with her at the helm of Angels on Parade! Finally, a HUGE thank you to our friend at Body Armor, Matt Halverson, for helping with our new canopy! Don't worry. The Scarf is now in charge of all canopy storage from here on out! There's so much more to be dramatic about on this episode, so here it is: Which trialist has Scarf going "Full Mingo"?! Why was Filly impersonating Foghorn Leghorn? Was Leonardo Noguiera of Cal State LA drafted? How did they manage to fit in two Javi Perez mentions? How did "Remimartinn" finish at the first eMLS tournament of 2020? (Better than Jay Ajayi!) Which players and coaches on LAFC's current roster were drafted by someone in the SuperDraft? And when does the new kit finally come out?!? Hear the answers to all these and more on Episode 77 of Defenders of the Banc!
While the team may be on a bit of a break before the Open Cup and the Gold Cup, the Defenders have been hard at work! On this episode, Filly and The Scarf head to the LAFC offices in DTLA to interview LAFC midfielder Javi Perez! Hailing from the legendary Valencia academy in Spain, Javi's journey from Valencia, to Pittsburgh, and then to LAFC is fascinating. On the interview, you'll hear about his time spent at David Villa's DV7 Academy, captaining the Pitt Panthers under coach Jay Vidovich, the experience of the Draft and Combine, and playing on the pitch against Vissel Kobe his idol and mentor, David Villa. We sat down with Javi on May 22, but unfortunately, just before the end of the month, Javi tore his ACL for a second time. We wish Javi a speedy and smooth recovery, and we can't wait to see him back out there for the Black and Gold next year!
Here on Episode 28 of Defenders of the Banc, Filly and the Scarf are in beautiful Portland, Oregon to help the Timbers open newly renovated Providence Park! The boys in Black and Gold christened the new surroundings nicely, leaving with all three points in a fantastic 3-2 win. The Defenders recap the great game and a great city, including the incredible food and beer scene, the soccer culture of Portland, and a few of the tourist attractions that make Portland so much fun, and weird. The episode has all the classics, including This Day in LAFC History and their "Wait, What?" moment of the match. We recount another amazing Vela goal, a bicycle kick, our first beer showers, and watching the Champions League final with about 200 other Black and Gold supporters. Portland, it's been fun! Thanks for being such great hosts, and for the three points! A big thank you to all of our Defenders out there who listen to our pod each episode. Our next episode will feature an interview with Javi Perez, recorded about 10 days before his unfortunate ACL injury, so stay tuned!

Three games into the season, and LAFC is still undefeated! However, leaving Yankee Stadium after our first game against NYCFC on their turf leaves us with that same feeling we had after last year's 2-2 draw. On Episode 12, hear Filly and The Scarf's complete game recap of our second consecutive 2-2 draw with NYCFC. The Defenders also cover a good bit of news regarding our "unofficial official" USL team, Phoenix Rising FC. Five LAFC players currently reside in the Valley of the Sun, including Javi Perez, Josh Perez, Lamar Batista, Tristan Blackmon, and show favorite Shaft Brewer, Jr. We also cover Wayne Rooney's hat trick against hated "rival" Real Salt Lake and FC Cincinnati's first MLS win against our foes from the north, Portland. Rounding out the podcast, we wish a very happy birthday to team owner Mia Hamm Garciaparra, we thank the Cuervos for being wonderful hosts to Filly during their watch party at El Tejano, and we cordially invite all of our listeners out to a special scarf launch for LAFC and The Scarf's collaboration on his birthday, Wednesday, March 20th at LAFC HQ! We hope you all enjoy Episode 12 of Defenders of the Banc!
Game number two equaled win number two as LAFC took it to the Portland Timbers at the Banc for a 4-1 victory! On Episode 11, learn all about the incredible win over Portland from Filly and The Scarf, from the early goal by Mark-Anthony Kaye to the late red that put the Timbers a man down and essentially put the match away. Also on the episode, we wish a happy birthday to Chuck Norris (and his beard), we congratulate Javi Perez on officially joining the ranks of the Black and Gold, we marvel over a new scarf for sale at LAFC HQ, and we hope for the best as Lamar Batista begins his loan to Phoenix Rising FC. Finally, we remember Gerardo "Gerry" Escobedo. Much more than part of the security staff at Banc of California Stadium, Gerry was a friend to both of us at Defenders of the Banc and a large reason why the Banc felt like home. Gerry, your kind heart and warm nature will be missed, but we know you had a fantastic view of this victory. Rest in Peace, Gerry. This episode is dedicated to the memory of Gerardo "Gerry" Escobedo, July 15, 1969 - February 12, 2019.
Happy 2019 from Filly and The Scarf!
