When will we realize that peace isn't something we create, but something already here—quietly waiting for us?That's the thread David Lewis follows in this winter‑solstice talk, weaving together poetry, Buddhist teachings, and reflections on the natural world. He begins by exploring how solstice traditions mirror dharmic values: stillness, silence, and the movement from darkness toward light.Drawing on images from Patricia Fargnoli's poem Winter Grace, David invites listeners to recognize how truth often emerges in quiet, slowed‑down seasons. He then connects this to foundational Buddhist ideas—especially dukkha as “unreliability”—and explains how acknowledging life's darkness is a necessary prelude to awakening. Along the way, he highlights traditional practices such as vassa (the monsoon retreat), uposatha observance days, and the universal human need for a Sabbath‑like pause.David looks at cultivating peace of mind as both a personal refuge and a contribution to the wider world. He emphasizes that peace isn't the absence of difficulty but the ability to remain steady within it:Letting go as the path to peace, illustrated through Ajahn Chah's famous lines about releasing a little, a lot, or completely.Peace as the mind's natural state, supported by the Buddha's teaching on the luminous mind.Attachment and distraction as the opposites of peace, and the practice of gently releasing both.Gratitude as a happiness practice, echoing Aesop and modern monastics.Joy as the unfolding result of practice, expressed through Bhikkhu Analayo's “progressive refinement of joy.”David closes with a reminder from Dōgen that life is fleeting and awakening is always available now. His solstice wish for the community is simple and heartfelt: may they rest in the natural ease of body and mind, and may all beings be free from needless suffering.______________David Lewis has been following the dharma path for 50 years. He has a degree in comparative religious studies and is a graduate of Spirit Rock Meditation Center's Advanced Practitioners Program. How can we simplify our life and our mind amid today's overwhelming digital distractions and misinformation? Here David Lewis explores the timeless relevance of Buddhist teachings in our modern, often chaotic world. He begins by reflecting on how suffering ushers many people toward the dharma, yet his own initial curiosity was about the nature of reality and truth, which he found deeply resonant in Buddhism's investigative spirit. David highlights the Buddha's emphasis on self-reliance with his famous advice, “Be a lamp unto yourself,” encouraging us to seek refuge not outside but within our own experience. He unpacks the concept of taking refuge in the Triple Gem—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—explaining that this means recognizing our own potential for awakening, leaning on supportive community, and embracing the truth as revealed through direct experience, not just intellectual belief. He stresses the importance of curiosity as the magnet of dharma practice, and how meditation and mindful attention help us simplify life amid today's overwhelm, which he compares to a modern form of suffering or “unreliability.”As the world competes for our attention, David advises grounding ourselves in reality through direct sensory experience, mindfulness, and meditation—a radical act of reclaiming our attention and cultivating peace. He encourages us to let go of what obstructs our happiness, describing renunciation not as a loss but gaining freedom from craving and distraction. He reminds us that the practice is less about acquiring something new and more about creating space for stillness and clarity. ______________ David Lewis has been following the dharma path for 50 years. At the Oregon Country Fair, there are fairies and gnomes walking around in colorful costumes. A 40-person marching band also bursts out of nowhere and plays down a path. “Feels like you stepped into a wonderland or something magical,” one fairgoer told OPB in 2024. The fair grew out of a 1960s vision of a better world: a paradise for hippies. But the history of the fair is complex. It takes place on a native ancestral gathering site. “I think there's a part of hippie culture that thinks that they can take any culture from any part of the world and make whatever they want of it,” said David Lewis, PhD, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Indigenous Studies at Oregon State University and a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. In this week’s episode, we sit down with OPB’s Oregon Art Beat producer Eric Slade and freelance producer Kunu Bearchum to talk about the Oregon Country Fair and how it houses hundreds of artists every year – and its history, from hippies to Native belonging. President Trump has made his picks for his second term cabinet more quickly and the transition is more organized and ready for Executive Branch action. Will hopes and fears of an executive reinvention be born out or will the difficulties of the first term show their face again? David Lewis finds that Trump's first term choices did not go over well with career civil servants but that there was not as much change as sometimes implied. Heath Brown went in-depth into the last transition from Trump to Biden and foresees problems ahead from chaotic transitions and the major ambitions of Trump's second term appointees. They are both looking ahead to more radical shifts in Trump's second term, with more appointees at odds with the agencies they are directing.

Hosea opens with the prophet being commanded by God to marry Gomer, a promiscuous woman, as a living symbol of Israel's unfaithfulness. Their children are given prophetic names that reflect God's judgment—signifying the broken relationship between God and His people. Yet even amid these harsh warnings of destruction and rejection, God hints at future restoration, promising that Israel will one day be called His people again. The Rev. Dr. David Lewis, associate professor of exegetical theology at Concordia Seminary, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Hosea 1. Hosea tells the powerful story of a prophet commanded to marry an unfaithful woman, Gomer, as a living symbol of God's boundless love for Israel despite its repeated betrayals. Through heartbreak and redemption, Hosea's marriage becomes a vivid portrayal of how deeply God desires His people to return to Him, even when they chase after idols. Packed with raw emotion, prophetic warnings, and a message of divine mercy, this book captures God's relentless pursuit and offers a stirring reminder that restoration is always possible—through Jesus--no matter how far one has wandered.
