Shownotes

Not ready to say goodbye to Western month yet? Good! Neither are we! It's the last week of our cast takeover and we’re lucky enough to have a cheeky fifth Thursday – which means it's time for Amy & After Dark! These are the late-night episodes where we get cosy and yap about all the things that don't fit into our regular podcast schedule. At the behest of Amy, our holidaying host, we tucked into some popcorn and s'mores with all the table manners of a band of backwoodsmen and sat down to watch Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. This 1954 technicolour Western (directed by Stanley Donen, with music and lyrics by Gene de Paul and Johnny Mercer, and starring Howard Keel, Jane Powell and, crucially, Julie Newmar as our dear Dorcas) is an Academy Award–winning smash hit from the golden age of Hollywood studio musicals. For some of us, it's a classic comfort watch and for others it was a brand new experience but, bless our beautiful hides, boy do we have a lot to say about it! In this episode we chat about everything from barn raising dance battles, to the cultural and political climate of 1950s USA, to the colonial impulses at the heart of Hollywood’s fascination with Ancient Rome. How can we simplify our life and our mind amid today's overwhelming digital distractions and misinformation? Here David Lewis explores the timeless relevance of Buddhist teachings in our modern, often chaotic world. He begins by reflecting on how suffering ushers many people toward the dharma, yet his own initial curiosity was about the nature of reality and truth, which he found deeply resonant in Buddhism's investigative spirit. David highlights the Buddha's emphasis on self-reliance with his famous advice, “Be a lamp unto yourself,” encouraging us to seek refuge not outside but within our own experience. He unpacks the concept of taking refuge in the Triple Gem—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—explaining that this means recognizing our own potential for awakening, leaning on supportive community, and embracing the truth as revealed through direct experience, not just intellectual belief. He stresses the importance of curiosity as the magnet of dharma practice, and how meditation and mindful attention help us simplify life amid today's overwhelm, which he compares to a modern form of suffering or “unreliability.”As the world competes for our attention, David advises grounding ourselves in reality through direct sensory experience, mindfulness, and meditation—a radical act of reclaiming our attention and cultivating peace. He encourages us to let go of what obstructs our happiness, describing renunciation not as a loss but gaining freedom from craving and distraction. He reminds us that the practice is less about acquiring something new and more about creating space for stillness and clarity. ______________ David Lewis has been following the dharma path for 50 years. He has a degree in comparative religious studies and is a graduate of Spirit Rock Meditation Center's Advanced Practitioners Program. At the Oregon Country Fair, there are fairies and gnomes walking around in colorful costumes. A 40-person marching band also bursts out of nowhere and plays down a path. “Feels like you stepped into a wonderland or something magical,” one fairgoer told OPB in 2024. The fair grew out of a 1960s vision of a better world: a paradise for hippies. But the history of the fair is complex. It takes place on a native ancestral gathering site. “I think there's a part of hippie culture that thinks that they can take any culture from any part of the world and make whatever they want of it,” said David Lewis, PhD, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Indigenous Studies at Oregon State University and a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. In this week’s episode, we sit down with OPB’s Oregon Art Beat producer Eric Slade and freelance producer Kunu Bearchum to talk about the Oregon Country Fair and how it houses hundreds of artists every year – and its history, from hippies to Native belonging. READ: Leviticus 6:9, 13 MEDITATE: Just as God gave the priests instructions, remind yourself that your commitment is to God, not man. Ask God to show you things that may tempt you to break your fast and help you remove them from your life. Ask the Holy Spirit to keep the “fire burning” as you set aside time to fast and pray today. PRAY: Lord, I acknowledge there may be things that are making it hard to keep my prayer and fasting commitment. I recommit to you (not to myself or to others) that I will continue. I know that I can't keep the fire burning through my own efforts. So, Holy Spirit, please keep the fires burning in the time I spend with you today. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Need prayer? President Trump has made his picks for his second term cabinet more quickly and the transition is more organized and ready for Executive Branch action. Will hopes and fears of an executive reinvention be born out or will the difficulties of the first term show their face again? David Lewis finds that Trump's first term choices did not go over well with career civil servants but that there was not as much change as sometimes implied. Heath Brown went in-depth into the last transition from Trump to Biden and foresees problems ahead from chaotic transitions and the major ambitions of Trump's second term appointees. They are both looking ahead to more radical shifts in Trump's second term, with more appointees at odds with the agencies they are directing.
Is this a Murder Mystery? A Pretty Woman prequel? Perhaps it is a Romantic Drama. We aren't quite sure, but Klute from 1971 was certainly praised. Set in what was the modern day early 70's, a detective, a high class call girl, and a corporate chief have their lives entangled as they try to solve a murder mystery. Bree Daniel runs afoul with John Klute who is investigating the death. She is determined not to get attached to him or to reveal her secrets, but she seemingly caves to his dry and calm demeanor. Who dun it? In this review we take a look in depth of this classic film to see if it has aged well like fine wine or more like a dried up prune.Starring Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland and Charles Cioffi. Directed by Alan J. Pakula and Written by Andy and David Lewis.
David Glenn Lewis, a 39-year-old attorney from Amarillo, Texas, vanished under mysterious circumstances during Super Bowl weekend in 1993. His wife and daughter returned home on January 31 to find him missing, with two sandwiches in the fridge, the VCR recording the game, and his personal belongings, including his wedding ring and watch, left behind. His car was found parked near the courthouse with keys and identification inside. On February 1, his wife reported him missing. That same day, 1,600 miles away in Yakima County, Washington, a man matching David's description was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident. He wore military-style clothing and carried no identification.Investigators later uncovered puzzling details: plane tickets in David's name, sightings of him in Dallas and at an airport, and a mysterious $5,000 deposit into his account. Despite theories of foul play, mental health struggles, or an attempt to escape threats related to his legal career, the case went cold. In 2004, DNA confirmed the Washington victim as David, but his reasons for being there and the events leading to his death remain unsolved.Ossuary 6 - Air Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Contact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteriesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@weeknightmysteries

Reverend Dr. David Lewis from Concordia Seminary joins us to unravel the mysteries of the Gospel of Mark's controversial ending. Discover how this ancient text invites us into a deeper understanding of Jesus and challenges us to embrace authenticity and community in our faith journey. As we navigate the complexities of a post-Christian world, we explore the pressing need for church leaders to preserve authentic Lutheranism while creatively engaging with their communities, striking a pivotal balance between tradition and innovation. We also venture into the fascinating world of film analysis and theology, examining how modern cinema, like "Guardians of the Galaxy," portrays Christ figures that resonate with today's audiences. Films become a compelling bridge to discuss faith with outsiders, as illustrated by our discussion on the upcoming horror film "Wretch Like Me," which weaves gospel messages into its narrative artfully. This exploration demonstrates the power of storytelling in film to make spiritual themes accessible and impactful, drawing connections to biblical exorcism accounts to justify the genre's use.Our conversation concludes with an exploration of communal storytelling and the enduring power of the word in Christian belief. Delve into the significance of experiencing gospel narratives collectively, akin to watching a movie in a theater, enhancing understanding and emotional connection. We reflect on the transformative potential of suspended endings in literature, like those in the Gospel of Mark and notable ancient texts, that invite deeper engagement with the narrative. The episode underscores the inclusive message of Christ that transcends traditional divisions, offering hope and a call to action for today's believers.Support the showWatch Us On Youtube!

What did the Buddha mean when he spoke of ignorance? In this talk, David Lewis discusses the essence of mindfulness and the core principles of Buddhism, emphasizing direct experience over intellectual understanding. He explains that the Buddha avoided metaphysics and focused on how things work, promoting meditation as a means of gaining wisdom. He underscores that ignorance in Buddhism is not about a lack of information but rather the failure to see things clearly in the present moment. Ignorance is linked to being caught up in thoughts rather than perceiving the present reality, leading to suffering.David discusses:Perception and Misperception: David highlights that our perception is conditioned by our experiences, often leading to erroneous interpretations of reality. He uses the metaphor of blind men perceiving an elephant differently to illustrate how we can have differing understandings of the same phenomenon.Insight and Ignorance: According to David, insight in Buddhism is not intellectual but a deeper, intuitive understanding that emerges from conscious awareness. It helps dissolve ignorance, which is the beginning of suffering. The Three Characteristics of Existence:Impermanence (Anicca): Everything is in a state of change, and recognizing this helps us let go of attachments and fear of death or loss.Suffering (Dukkha): Often misunderstood as mere suffering, Dukkha refers to the inherent unsatisfactoriness and unreliability of life.Not-Self (Anatta): David discusses the concept of no-self, which challenges the idea of a permanent, unchanging self, promoting a deeper understanding of interconnectedness and letting go of ego-based clinging.David emphasizes that these insights are tools for waking up to the nature of reality, leading to freedom from suffering. Meditation serves as a practice to cultivate awareness and wisdom, helping us to live in harmony with the true nature of things. ______________ To support our efforts to share these talks with LGBTQIA audiences worldwide, please visit https://gaybuddhist.org/There you can: Donate Learn how to participate live Find our schedule of upcoming speakers Join our mailing list or discussion forum Enjoy many hundreds of these recorded talks dating back to 1996 CREDITSAudio Engineer: George HubbardProducer: Tom BrueinMusic/Logo/Artwork: Derek Lassiter
Hosea opens with the prophet being commanded by God to marry Gomer, a promiscuous woman, as a living symbol of Israel's unfaithfulness. Their children are given prophetic names that reflect God's judgment—signifying the broken relationship between God and His people. Yet even amid these harsh warnings of destruction and rejection, God hints at future restoration, promising that Israel will one day be called His people again. The Rev. Dr. David Lewis, associate professor of exegetical theology at Concordia Seminary, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Hosea 1. Hosea tells the powerful story of a prophet commanded to marry an unfaithful woman, Gomer, as a living symbol of God's boundless love for Israel despite its repeated betrayals. Through heartbreak and redemption, Hosea's marriage becomes a vivid portrayal of how deeply God desires His people to return to Him, even when they chase after idols. Packed with raw emotion, prophetic warnings, and a message of divine mercy, this book captures God's relentless pursuit and offers a stirring reminder that restoration is always possible—through Jesus--no matter how far one has wandered.

When it comes to our federal bureaucracy, there are two schools of thought. One says that an insulated group of career bureaucrats have created a deep state that corrupts the performance of government. The other says that our bureaucracy is dysfunctional because there is too much turnover or positions left vacant. Both rest on an underlying feature of our democracy: many of the positions in the federal bureaucracy are appointed by the President and approved by Congress. But, could having less politically selected appointments give us a more functional government? In this episode, we're doing things a bit different. The Center for Effective Government at the University of Chicago, headed by our very own William Howell, has developed a series of primers that each focus on the available scholarship about the pros and cons of a particular governmental reform. Each primer is written by a scholar who has also done research in that area. On this episode, we speak with David Lewis from Vanderbilt University who wrote a primer on this question: should we have more politically appointed bureaucrats or less?
Sam Harris speaks with Tim Maudlin about the foundations of physics and metaphysics.
